Application, operation and design

APPLICATION With very few exceptions, new cement plants are designed to operate on the dry process principle. Most cement raw materials, however, have a moisture content of 38%, in some cases even more than 20%. To obtain effective grinding in a ball mill it is therefore necessary to dry before grinding. To achieve simplicity of mill installation the drying and grinding processes can be directly connected by passing the exhaust gases from the kiln through a semi-airswept raw mill. The air velocity through the mill and trunnion must be kept as low as possible to avoid a heavy pressure drop through the mill, with correspondingly high mill fan power consumption. The advantages of low pressure drop, as provided by a one compartment mill, and the high grinding efficiency of a two compartment mill, are combined in a single unit in the Duodan mill. The Duodan offers a number of design advantages over conventional ball mills: ! High drying capacity ! High grinding efficiency ! Low pressure drop OPERATING PRINCIPLE The Duodan, which is used for drygrinding of raw materials, is a semiairswept mill equipped with a drying chamber and two grinding compartments: a pregrinding compartment containing large steel balls, and a finegrinding compartment using small steel balls or Cylpebs as grinding media. These two compartments are separated by diaphragms and a peripheral outlet. The material to be ground passes through the drying chamber before entering the pregrinding compartment. The drying chamber is fitted with lifters which cascade the raw material through the hot air current during mill rotation. The mill is designed with large flow areas for the drying air drawn through the drying chamber and pregrinding compartment to maintain a flow of hot gas at relatively high velocity while at the same time ensuring low air velocity through the finegrinding compartment. The mill discharge material is conveyed to the separator by Fluxoslides or screw conveyors, elevators, and to a lesser extent, by the mill vent air. On leaving the separator the finished material is passed into cyclones. The reject material is returned to the fine- grinding compartment, except for a small amount which is sent to the pregrinding compartment. DESIGN The Duodan mill is equipped with one trunnion bearing and one slide-shoe bearing and is arranged for central drive. The mill is provided with inlets at both ends for the first and second grinding compartments, respectively. Mill body. All-welded shell with a cast steel conical mill head at the secondary inlet end, welded to the shell. A cast steel trunnion is fastened to the mill head and the slide ring to the mill flange by tight-fitting bolts. The drying chamber is cantilevered from the slide ring and consists of an all-welded shell flanged to the web of the slide ring by means of tight-fitting bolts. At the inlet end, a steel front plate is bolted to the shell flange. Trunnion bearing. The mill trunnion rests in a self-aligning ball-and-socket type bearing lined with white metal. This oil-lubricated bearing is bolted to a heavy base plate. Slide-shoe bearing. The slide ring runs in a bearing fitted with two self-aligning slide shoes which are supported on rollers mounted on a robust bedplate to allow for the longitudinal expansion and contraction of the mill body. Slide ring and bearing are enclosed in a dust-tight casing. Both bearings are water-cooled and provided with a self-contained oil

pumping unit enclosed in a metal casing. This unit comprises an oil circulation pump for general lubrication, and a high-pressure oil pump to ensure lubrication during mill start and barring. Drive. A welded-up, flanged, cylindrical connection piece for the Symetro gear drive is attached to the trunnion by tight-fitting bolts. Inlets. At the primary inlet a large diameter plate steel funnel is provided to channel the feed and drying air into the drying chamber through a large opening in the steel front plate. An air seal between funnel and front plate, and a funnel support, are also provided.

partment. Also included are a casing with support and seals for
the rotary parts, as well as steel plate linings for connection piece and trunnion. Outlet. The drying air and ground material from the first and second grinding compartments leave the mill through a peripheral outlet in the form of oblong openings in the

mill shell between the two compartments.

The outlet section of the mill, which is protected by bolted-on wear plates between the openings, is separated from the grinding compartments by diaphragms, described below. Also included is a stationary, airtight outlet easing with supports, seals at the mill shell, outlet flange at the bottom, and an opening in the upper part fitted with an expansion joint for connection to an exhaust duct. Internal fittings. The drying chamber is lined with bolted-on carbon steel plates and is equipped with highgrade cast steel lifters.

At the secondary inlet the connection piece is provided with a large scooping device and internal flights to transport tailings from the separator to the fine-grinding compartment. Additional openings are provided in the connection piece for passage of ventilation or drying air into the fine grinding com-

The first grinding compartment has a steplining of highchromium cast steel bolted to the mill shell, while the second

compartment is fitted with bolted-on highchromium cast steel and grouted-in cast Dragpeb lining plates. A scooping device with carbon steel scoops for lifting the feed into the mill proper is fitted between the drying chamber and first grinding compartment. The scooping device is bolted to a heavy double supporting plate joined to the web of the slide ring, forming the inlet end plate of the first grinding compartment This inlet end plate and the mill head are provided with bolted-on, wear-resistant lining plates of high- chromium cast steel. The diaphragms at the outlet end of the two grinding compartments each comprise a mild steel front plate bolted to cast steel segments, which in turn are bolted to the mill shell. Welded onto the front plates are stiffening flatirons and tube spacers. The front plate supports cast-steel, wear- resistant grates via bolts through the tube spacers.
