Steps Orientation (5 minutes)

Content A picture of a boy who is sweating.

P&P Activity 1. Teacher begins the lesson by showing the pupils a picture. 2. Teacher asks question: a) What happens to the boy in the picture? Answer: He is sweating. b) What should he do to cool himself down? Answer: Drink cold water, open the fan. c) How do you cool yourself down when the weather is hot? d) How do you keep yourself warm when the weather is cold? e) How do animals protect themselves from hot or cold weather? 3. Teacher introduces the topic of the lesson today which is Lesson 2. Living in extreme weather.

1. Teacher shows a Doraemon pocket in front of the class. 2. There are six pictures of animals in the Doraemon pocket. 3. Teacher will divide the white board into two

zones, that is hot weather zone and cold weather zone. 2. Teacher will select six pupils to take one picture each from the Doraemon pocket. 3. Each pupil that has been selected need to paste the animal pictures they get at the correct zone and said out one characteristic and behaviour of the animals that help them to survive in the hot and cold weather.

Restructuring Idea (20 minutes)

Animals that live in hot weather: a) Camel Have humps on their backs to store food and water. They can drink as much as 200 litres of water a day. b) Elephant Moves its big flaps to fan its body to keep itself cool. Uses its trunk to splash water to cool its body. c) Desert foxes Have long ears to lose heat easily. Animals that live in cold weather:

1. Teacher discusses the correct answers at the eliciting steps before with the pupils. 2. Teacher asks the pupils to give other examples of animals for hot and cold weather. 3. Teacher shows more information about animal living in extreme weather by using CD-ROM to enhance the understanding of the pupils. 4. Teacher asks the pupils to copy down the important points of the lesson in their exercise book.

They sleep during cold weather and cover their bodies with their long tails. Application Idea (15 minutes) Exercise A Plus Science Year 4 Book A, page 43 and 44. 1. Teacher asks pupils to take out their workbooks and go through the questions in the workbook together with the pupils. 2. Then, teacher asks the pupils to do the exercise inside the workbook. 3. Pupils are given 10 minutes to complete their work. 4. Teacher discusses the correct answers with the pupils if there is enough time. Reflection (5 minutes) Animals have special characteristics and behaviour that protect them from hot weather for examples elephant, camel, Rhinoceros and desert foxes. Animals in cold weather have special characteristics and behaviour to stay warm for examples polar bears, whales, arctic foxes, seal and walruses. Without the special characteristics and behaviour, the animals may die because of hot weather and because of the cold. 1.
