Introduction
Dantes Inferno is a 3rd person action adventure/beatem up game. It is based on the poem Divine Comedy by Dante Alighieri. Dantes Inferno was released for XBOX 360 and PS3.

Formal Elements Player

Like any game this game needs a player too as its designed for players to play. The games does not have function where it can play on its own, like seen in some games where the player can just spectate and see CPU vs. CPU playing. This game can be played by the players who are 18 and above. Invitation to Play: This game has a very inviting look right at the start of the game at the Start Screen of the game, the menu looks very welcoming too, and right at the beginning of the game the first cut scene sets the players mind to help his character Dante who is in the pursuit of his beloved Beatrice. Number of Players: Dantes Inferno is a single player game. Roles of Players: In Dantes Inferno, the player controls a character named Dante, the main protagonist in the game, who has a red tapestry sewn into his chest, who tries to free the soul of his beloved fiance Beatrice from the Lucifer, the ruler of Hell. Player Interaction: The game is a single player game, where the player plays against the computer. The player interaction pattern is Player vs Game.

Objective
Objective Archetypes Rescue: The main objective of the game is to rescue the soul of the female character Beatrice. Throughout the game the player only controls the main character to accomplish this objective. The objective is explicit, its clear right in the beginning of the game, as the female character Beatrice, Dantes fiance is shown dead right in the beginning of the game. The players memory is often refreshed about the main objective, through Dantes conversation with the enemies Where is Beatrice is the most common question you will notice Dante asking almost all the Bosses.

Exploration: Another objective of the game is to explore the game world and find Relics which are found in the kneeling goat statues in the game. The Relics can be equipped and once equipped they enhance your abilities. The player also must find all the Damned. Damned are the famous denizens of the nine circle, Dante can either Absolve them or Punish them. Which in turn gives Holy bonus Xp when Absolved and Unholy bonus when Punished. In the game player must also look out for all the Silver Judas Coins. On collecting every 5 Silver Piece, the players character is awarded with a huge amount of souls. The exploration side objectives reduce the pacing of the game, but its the players choice if he would like to collect all the collectibles and punish or absolve all the damned creatures, which directly impacts the pacing of the game. Solution: There are a series of puzzle situations in the game, where the players problem solving skills are put into test. For example moving the crate to the right position to jump to the required height to grab the Silver Judas Coins and to Punish or Absolve Orpheus in the Level Acheron. Another example would be moving The Beatrice Statue to use it to block, to block the vertically moving platforms in the level Descent into Lust. There are more such puzzles in the game, one or two in almost every level. The puzzles in the game do reduce the pacing of the game. As the players may not be able to solve the puzzles at the first attempt. The pacing in such cases will depend upon how soon the players can solve the puzzles. Pramod Nautiyal - GDA1 Page 5

Any character can push them on the ground. This rule is explained in the game, by a text on when the player gets to interact with a block for the first time. Then each time when the player moves close to the movable block, the button is displayed on the screen, to tell the player that these blocks can be movable. The blocks are solid objects, the player can jump on them, use them to obstruct something, like vertical moving platforms.

The player learn this rule when he tries jumping on the block and discovers he can jump on them The Fountains: Fountains are stationary objects, of 3 different types 1st (Yellow Fountain) that gives the characters souls which can be used to purchase abilities, 2nd health fountains(Green), that restores the characters health, and mana fountain (Blue), which restores characters mana. Once the fountain is broken, the character cannot use broken fountains to restore health or mana. Pramod Nautiyal - GDA1 Page 7

Game Analysis- Dantes Inferno Date: 10/09/2012 This rule about fountain color is explained in the game through text when the player comes across these fountains for the first time and then every time the player goes to these fountains, the button is displayed on the screen to tell the player that he can interact with this object and save his game. Basically allows players to have movement on the walls. The rules about holding a rope using it to swing or grapple and climbing using the dead creepers on the walls is explained to the player in the form of text. Levers: Throughout the game there are levers that the player must interact with. Interaction with the levers result in movement of some object, platforms etc. in the game. This is explained to the player through text when he comes across a situation where he must interact with the levers to move or to turn some objects. Rules defining the BAR system concept: Dantes life, his boost attack and his magical attacks are all governed by a bar system. Health Bar: Dantes health and life in the game is determined by the Health Bar. The health bar appears green in color; it reduces every time Dantes takes damage from Pramod Nautiyal - GDA1 Page 8

Game Analysis- Dantes Inferno Date: 10/09/2012 enemies. The reduction in the health bar is based on the nature of damage taken by Dante from his enemies. When the health bar is empty the character dies and the level resets from the last saved point. Dante can recover health by breaking the health fountain

The player learns this rule, when he dies for the first time by taking damage from the enemies

Mana Bar and Magic Bar: Dante can perform magical attacks, which are more deadly than his normal attack. His ability to do magical attacks is determined by the Magic Bar(Orange Bar on Top right of the screen) and the Mana Bar(Purple bar, below the Health Bar). Though the player starts with only one Redemption bar, two more can be purchased in the upgrade menu. This rule is explained to the player through text at the start of the game. Game Analysis- Dantes Inferno Date: 10/09/2012 Rules regarding Purchasing /Upgrading attacks/abilities, and Equipping Spells and Relics (Concept):

Rules regarding Purchases and Upgrades: Throughout the game, the player will get opportunities to purchase and upgrade Dantes spells and attacks. The player will need holy souls to upgrade holy abilities and unholy souls to upgrade unholy abilities This is explained to the player by text, for the first time when the player has enough souls to buy upgrades.

Rules regarding Equipping Spells and Relics: There is variety of spells that the character can gather throughout the game. Dante can gather spells by defeating bosses and by purchasing them with souls. Each spell has its own unique ability, be it offensive or defensive. Dante can equip 4 spells at a time; the player must assign these spells to the particular button assigned for spells in the game. The player learns about equipping spells through text and visuals when he kills the first boss and acquires a spell. Dante can enhance his combat abilities by equipping relics. Page 10

Game Analysis- Dantes Inferno Date: 10/09/2012 This rule is explained at the start of the game when the player collects enough holy or unholy souls for the first level up in any of the 2 categories. Then every time, when the player fails to equip a relic or spell due to level requirements for that specific skill or relic, he is reminded that he needs the required level to equip them with the number of souls remaining to the next level up

Rules restricting Movement and Action: The game has certain boundaries which restricts the playable characters movements. If the character has reached one of these boundaries, he will not be able to move further. So these boundaries restrict the players free movement in the game world. There also some instances in the game, where the player can move freely within an area during cut scenes but cannot use any other actions like jump, light and heavy attacks etc. The player understands this rule when he tries moving ahead but is blocked by an invisible wall. In the case of cut scenes the player understands the rule of restricted action when he tries performing some actions other than the movement. The character will just not take any inputs from the player about action during the cut scenes. Rules determining Effects: Falling: If a character falls from a great, he dies and the level is reset. The player learns this rule when his character dies for the first time because of falling down from a height. Fire:

Game Analysis- Dantes Inferno Date: 10/09/2012 Lava and other killing floors: In some levels of the game, there is molten lava on the ground. The lava act as an automatic death zone, if the character falls on it, he dies instantly and the level resets. The player can understand this rule by the red color of the lava and the hot lava waves emitted by the molten burning surface of the ground. Otherwise he can learn this rule by falling in the lava and dying once and the same for other killing floors in the game. Each relic that Dante equips provides a different combat augmentation. Initially the player can only equip two relics, but progressing up the holy and unholy paths unlocks additional relic slots. Equipped relics can also level up as Dante gathers souls, increasing the effect they provide. The player learns the rules about relics through text and visuals in the game when Dante finds the first relic. The rule about the needed holy or unholy levels to equip higher level relics is displayed as text when Dantes holy or unholy level is less than required level for the relic that the player wants to equip.

Resources
Health : Dantes life in the game is governed by a health system. Dantes has limited health and every time. Whenever enemies deal damage to the character, he loses health. When the health bar becomes empty the character dies and the level is reset. But there is a way for Dante to replenish his health, i.e. at the health fountains. Mana: Dante can perform magical attacks if he has enough mana. Like health, Dante has a limited mana. Each magical attack consumes mana. Mana can be restored at the mana fountains. Redemption: Dante can boost his attack, when the redemption is activated. Dante becomes more stronger and faster for a limited amount of time. Redemption can be acquired by bashing enemies with stylish attacks and combos.

When the magic bar is full, the player can activate magic and choose from the magical spells he has equipped to take down the enemies. The spells last for a limited time and cost mana when used. Relics: Relics are items that enhance Dantes combat abilities. Initially the player can only equip two relics, but progressing up the holy and unholy paths unlocks additional relic slots. Conflicts
Obstacles : Physical:

Almost every level in the game has some or other obstacles. For example, during platforming there are many areas where Dante must escape from the fire outlets on the walls and sometimes under the ground. There are various types of enemies which obstruct Dante from achieving his objective in the game some are of easy difficulty (minions) and some are of hard difficulty (bosses). A huge conflict arises when the player has to manage killing enemies with limited health. Timing the blocks and counter attacks is another conflict in the game. High grounds and killing floors are another set of obstacles in the game; they also increase the tension in the game. When the enemy is weakened after Dante has performed a series of attack on the enemy, the player must press the right button displayed on the screen to perform special attack (Context Sensitive Attacks) on the enemies. If the player fails to press the right button at the right time, this results in the players character taking damage from the enemies.

Mental: Almost all the levels have some puzzle situation. Which reduce the pacing of the game, these puzzle situation act as mental obstacles. To some extent low health of the character, when battling with the bosses low health can auto create a high level of threat and tempo in the game.

Pramod Nautiyal - GDA1

Page 14

Game Analysis- Dantes Inferno Date: 10/09/2012 Dilemmas: The player is always in a dilemma to make Dante absolve the damned or to punish them which will reward Dante with holy or unholy souls depending on the decision the player makes. There is also confusion, in choosing the right type of relic and spells for each type of bosses. Dilemmas may arise when the player has to make a choice between the special attacks to unlock with the limited amount of souls.

Outcome:
The outcome of the game is determined whether the player wants to complete the game and yes the game has an ending. The game doesnt have a scoring system. The game only keeps a track of the souls collected by the player, abilities and attacks unlocked, relics and Judas stone found, holy and unholy levels. Hence, the player will eventually reach the end of the game. The player can only win or lose (if he gives up) the game, so it is a zero-sum game.

Dramatic Elements Challenge

Skills required and elements in the game requiring these skills:

Dexterity: This is the main skill required in the game but the level required for this skill is medium. Every Beatem up game needs the players to have a good degree of Dexterity. In Dantes Inferno all most in every level, this skill of the players is tested. Players need good hand eye coordination to block, evade, counter from enemy attacks A good degree of Dexterity is also required as there are a good number of platforming elements also in the game for instance grappling, swinging on ropes and then jumping at the right time to catch another rope or a ledge where the player can successfully climb up. After performing a series of attacks on the enemies, Dantes can perform special attacks on the enemies if the player presses the right button as instructed on the game screen. A good level of hand eye co-ordination is required to perform such Context Sensitive Attacks on the enemies. This is the main skill required in the game but the level required for this skill is medium. But a high level of dexterity skill is required when the player decides to play the game in harder difficulty modes.

Logic: The game has a few puzzle situations in every level. Here the players logical skills come to play to solve these puzzles. Also to kill the bosses, the player have to apply a certain degree of logic to combine his characters attacks with magical spells and the relics he has equipped his character with.

Pramod Nautiyal - GDA1

Page 16

Game Analysis- Dantes Inferno Date: 10/09/2012 This is a secondary skill required in the game. But still the level required for this skill will be anywhere from low to medium. Because even if the player decides to play the game in the toughest difficulty mode the puzzles will still remain the same Decision Making: The player must choose the right type of spells and relics to equip to make his attack more effective. There is huge array of spells and relics the player can choose from once he has acquired them. To choose the right spell and relics to defeat an enemy is where the player decision making skill is tested. Another place where the player decision making skill comes into play is where the player is shopping for upgrades and new attack combos. The player also applies his decision making skills when he is put in a situation where his character has to absolve or punish the damned denizens. The player makes this decision by analyzing his holy and unholy souls and by deciding what types of magic and attack he wants to unlock and upgrade first. The level of decision making skills required for this game will be low in easy and normal difficulty modes, but if the player chooses to play the game in a hard difficulty mode, he will probably have to be of a medium level in terms of decision making skills because if player doesnt equip the right spells and relics he may find it hard to kill the enemies and get frustrated. Reactivity and adaptability In the game the player unlocks his character new attacks, getting used to those attacks and using them at the right time for the attacks to be the most Pramod Nautiyal - GDA1 Page 17

Game Analysis- Dantes Inferno Date: 10/09/2012 effective is where this skill comes in to picture. Previously the player may have been accustomed to a certain type of attack and it could be challenging to adapt to a new type of attack and get the most out of it. The global level required for this skill is low.

Rising Difficulty The first level is relatively easy compared to the other levels in the game as the game is just introducing the concept of light and heavy attacks, holy and unholy and other concepts in the game to the player. It is noticed that the smaller enemies dont deal much of damage compared to the smaller enemies in other levels. The attacks of all the bosses in the first level can be easily judged and the player hardly finds any challenge in evading such attacks. After the first level The Surface Dante has to go through 9 Circles of Hell The first Circle of Hell being Limbo. This level is also comparatively easy than the other later levels in the game as the player is still learning about other various elements of the game. Dante gets his first relic in this level and learn about them by using them to enhance his combat abilities. Dante also encounter his first damned soul in Limbo, so since the player is still being introduced with the core mechanics of the game, this level is comparatively less difficult than the level ahead The 2nd and the 3rd Circle of hell Lust and Gluttony get more difficult than the 1st Circle By the 4th circle the player has learned about all the mechanics and elements of the game, the game start picking up difficulty slowly from this stage and the game start becoming more challenging Then the games difficulty starts increasing in each Circle of Hell, where enemies going further get stronger and more powerful with their attacks and the number of enemies also increases, to counter this Dante by then is in a position to have powerful magic spells and enhanced special attacks. But throughout the later levels the players above mentioned skill are tested to a great extent. This is when the player experiences a decent amount of challenge.
