Introduction
Theblastfurnaceisessentiallyacontinuouscountercurrentreactorinwhichthedescendingchargeis
heatedandreactedwithascendinggases,derivedfromcombustionofcarbonatthetuyere.Thecharge
consistsofironsinter/pellets+cokeandlimestone.Duringdescent,ironoxideisreducedtoFeOand
limestonedecomposedtoCaOandCO2.
Thecombustionofcokeatthetuyerelevelwithairraisesthetemperatureinbetween
1800 to 2100 ,andmeltsslagandmetal.
ThereductionofFeOtoFeandthemeltingofironandformationofhotmetalandslagbeginoncethe
