Wilf Stevensons Bring home the bacon! speech in Thursdays debate about UK Industry Competitiveness

With the LIBOR scandal currently rocking the City, Labour peers used the Bryan Davies introduces his amendment to the vehicle of the Financial Services Bill to debate banking regulation. In a speech that prompted lengthy debate from all sides of the House, Shadow Civil Aviation Bill to ensure dignity during security Treasury minister John Eatwell pressed the case for an independent checks banking inquiry. Sadly the vote that followed was lost 251-197.s

Wood for the trees


The Independent Panel on Forestrys report was released this week and our Peers have been among those spearheading campaigns against Coalition plans to sell off our forests and woodlands. Lords Shadow Leader Jan Royall, herself a Resident of the Forest of Dean, welcomed the Report while stressing the importance of a continued campaign.

Earlier this week a Memorial Service was held for former Labour MP and Peer Jack Ashley, who died in April. Throughout his life, Jack was a dedicated champion of the poor and vulnerable, most notably in his work on behalf of people with disabilities. Many tributes were paid to him at the Service, including these wonderful words from former Labour Leader Neil Kinnock.

Votes & Statistics


The big vote this week was on our amendment to the Financial Services Bill, to pave the way for an impartial, judge led inquiry into the Libor scandal. Although we lost , 65 LibDem Peers once again displayed their pavlovian-like willingness to prop up Tory policies.
