White Paper
The Alvarion Point-to-Point (PtP) Calculator helps simplify the bid process to make it even easier to resell Alvarions robust and easy-to-deploy solution for PtP links. Quickly and easily calculate the necessary components and specications to create detailed quotes on complete wireless broadband access deployments for your customers. You will need to collect some information from your customer or prospective customer before using the PTP Calculator. This information includes: Global Positioning coordinates for Site A and Site B (the two sites they wish to connect). Height of the buildings or towers where the antennae will be located. Their preferred frequency or frequencies. The expected bandwidth usage. Whether they wish to use integrated, external or would like to consider both antenna options.
Follow these steps to calculate a PTP link in less than two minutes:
Step 1: 10 Seconds
Start here: https://airpartner.alvarion.com/index.php?content=ptp_estimator Visit the online PTP Calculator that is part of the AIRpartner Web site and agree to the Disclaimer.
Disclaimer The results provided by this tool are theoretical only and are not guarantee for link availability or performance. The data is provided in order to assist initial link estimation and does not take into consideration the ambient noise oor. The throughput provided by this tool is the maximum achievable per rate and assumes ideal conditions. Interference, distance, obstructions and other factors can all reduce the actual achievable throughput. The user is responsible to select the appropriate radio regulatory domain and conform to all rules and regulations of the particular country.
Step 2: 30 seconds
Enter the latitude and longitude for Site A, and Site B. You may rename the two sites for convenience, clarity and professionalism, and to enable easy reference to the quote when needed. If the coordinates are provided in a different format, choose the appropriate one. Sites may be connected anywhere within the US, Canada or the Caribbean. NOTE: You can select DEFAULTS at any time to return all elds to their original values.
Step 3: 40 Seconds
Enter the height of the tower/building where the antennas will be located at each site. You may type in the measurement value, either Imperial or metric, or slide the antenna icons up and down to match the specications.
Step 4: 55 Seconds
The PTP Calculator estimates the link range based on antennas heights and terrain. The example below shows a graphic with the following information, automatically performing an analysis on the link: 1. Link graphic a. The black line of the link graphic shows the line-of-sight. b. The green area of the link graphic shows the 60% Fresnel Zone of the optional frequencies (5.3, 5.4, 5.8 or 4.9 GHz) in the territory. c. A red area would appear if a link could not be established and highlighted under the Limitations tab. 2. Site A and Site B are shown at each end of the link with suggested azimuth (True and Magnetic) direction for each antenna. 3. The height of each antenna is also shown. EXAMPLE - Site A: a. Elevation 101 ft (Altitude + Antenna Height) b. Altitude (Based on Terrain) 3 ft c. Antenna Height 98 ft

4. Optional available frequencies are also shown for the specic location, taking into account the different regulations and allowed power outputs. a. Select the preferred frequency if specied by the customer. b. If the frequency is not specied, use the expected modulation rate, capacity, bandwidth usage and the usage of integrated or external antennas to determine what frequency would be best suited. 5. Select the Limitations tab (previously mentioned in 1c) to view any known limitations for the specic coordinates of the link.
Step 5: 60 Seconds
Choose the desired link by clicking Select to receive full technical information about the product, antennas and budget.
Step 6: 75 Seconds
Select Map View to see your link on a map, using Google Earth. A button to download and install the Google Earth software is also provided for your convenience. Either save the le for later or open it to view your location. The le will be included along with the nal quote email for your customer to view. Once the .kmz le is opened, double-click on the sites to see the signals path through the landscape and the relative heights of the towers.
Additional features: 1. If you have unique requirements for the landscape, climate or antenna preference you may change these parameters. The PTP Calculator will recalculate the performance for the specied area. 2. The standard fade margin is automatically calculated. You may enter a new value to adjust the fade margin in order to compensate for an extra noisy environment, rain, foliage or other conditions by selecting the manual mode. 3. There is also space to add additional components or products with their quantities and price.
