Maria Osiac, El plural de los sustantivos en perspectiva contrastiva (p. 15-20)
La mayora de los sustantivos presentan tanto en ruso como en rumano la oposicin binaria de nmero
entre el singular (empleado para designar un solo ejemplar de una clase de objetos) y el plural (empleado
para designar dos o ms objetos de la misma ndole). La principal modalidad para formar el plural est
representada en ambas lenguas de desinencias que se aaden a las formas de singular o reemplazan los
morfemas de singular. Adems de las desinencias, en rumano un papel significativo para marcar el plural
de los sustantivos tienen las alternancias fonticas, mucho menos frecuentes en ruso. En la lengua rusa,
en cambio, el plural est marcado, a veces, tanto mediante las desinencias como por los sufijos. Si en
rumano hay numerosos sustantivos numerables que se declinan, pero con formas idnticas de singular y
plural, en ruso no hay sustantivos declinables que no distingan, de ninguna manera, el plural del singular.
El nmero de los sustantivos puede ser expresado en estas situaciones slo sintcticamente. En ambas
lenguas pueden formar el plural, a veces, aun los sustantivos incluidos, por lo general, en la clase de
singularia tantum.
Valeriu Marinescu, The Encomium in the Slavonic-Romanian Historiography (p. 21-33)
This study tries to reconstruct, by making use of some literary texts that had been written in Slavonic, the
official language at that time, a possible image of the man living in the Romanian Middle Ages. In the Old
Romanian literature, the encomium has a considerable tradition; the Romanian literature from the second
half of the 15th century is mostly oriented towards the courtly historiography, with a strong emphasis on
the personality cult. The writers should be seen as image directors, because they make advertising
efforts to shape the favourable image that the sovereigns wished to impose both to their servants and
neighbours. Beyond the purposeful encomium addressed to the patron, what is in fact expressed in the
encomiastical texts are the Romanians aspirations to peace, prosperity, to multiplying the good deeds
done by the sovereign to everybodys benefit.

Symbolic Rebirth of the Community at Milia (Costana) in Thesprotia of Epirus-Greece (p. 165-178)
The parameters of the religious feast and dance, contributing to the social and symbolic construction and
regeneration of the community of Milia (former Costana) in Thesprotia, Greece, are examined and
analysed, according to the methods of social-anthropology. These events take place during the
celebration of the Birth of the Virgin on September 8th in the namesake village church bearing also the
name of Labovistra. The religious feast and the dance are studied in comparison with similar
manifestations of the community in other periods of the year such as Easter and Carnival. The
community of Milia developed out of a cluster of hamlets and huts of the nearby village of Lia, some 150
years ago. So the study of the Labovistra rituals of the religious feast and the communal dance
contributes to our understanding of the process of this development.

The following remarks are additions to the information and comments included in the Editors Note that
accompanies the Arabic version of Dimitrie Cantemirs Divan (Ia?i, 1698), which I edited and translated
in 2006. They are the result of a comprehensive survey of the most important historical and literary
elements that define the translation achieved in 1705 by Athanasios III Dabbas, Patriarch of Antioch.
The purpose of this research is to shed more light on the specific features of this little known version of
Cantemirs Divan and on its significance for the history of the connections between Romanians and
Christian Arabs.

Albanern und Slawo-Mazedoniern unmittelbar nach dem Konflikt des Jahres 2001, die als Hintergrund
fr das Verstehen der Gegenwart dienen sollen. Entscheidend dafr waren einerseits die langfristigen

Auslegung und Verwertung des Ergebnisses der Volkszhlung im Jahre 2002 fielen unterschiedlich aus.
Das Ergebnis galt als Grundlage der neuen verwaltungsmigen Einteilung des Landes im Jahre 2004
mit Konsequenzen im Falle eines weiter voranschreitenden Auseinanderrckens beider Ethnien des
Landes. Da jedoch fr die Entwicklung der interethnischen Beziehungen in diesem Land allen voran die
politischen Entscheidungen und Stellungnahmen der jeweiligen fhrenden Politiker entscheidend waren,
werden diese verhltnismig eingehend behandelt. Dieser Beitrag begrenzt sich auf den Zeitraum
2001-2003; die darauffolgenden Abwicklungen werden hoffentlich in einem weiteren Artikel verfolgt

After 1569, in Islamic-Ottoman legal and diplomatic view, the Frenchmen were considered 'beneficiaries
of temporary protection' (mstemin) during their stay in the Ottoman dominions. According to certain
legal opinion (fetv) from the Manuscrit Turc 130 (Bibliothque Nationale de France), one can
distinguish more situations in which they were abusively made captives and their merchandise were
robbed: a) When the Frenchmen were navigating on their own vessels into and from Ottoman dominions;
b) When the Frenchmen were engaged with their ships in a carrying trade of 'enemy' merchandise (harb
met'); c) When the Frenchmen were navigating on a ship (harb gemisi) belonging to a Western power,
which was enemy to the Ottoman empire; d) When the Frenchmen were implied in carrying on
provisions, forbidden or not, to an enemy country.

1941 avec le roi Pierre II et le gouvernement royal. Il choisit de rester en exil aprs la prise de pouvoir
par le Parti communiste. Le premier stant embourgeois par le commerce, les autres ont continu le
processus dalliance entre les hauts chelons de la fonction publique et llite commerciale et financire.
Fonctionnaires loyaux, ils nont pas particip directement la vie politique, mais ils nen ont pas moins
subi les consquences (favoritisme du Parti radical, autoritarisme souponneux du roi Alexandre,
mainmise sur lEtat du Parti communiste), qui mirent fin leur carrire, lge de 54, 50 et 40 ans
respectivement.

Eine vor Kurzem im Klosterarchiv Maria-Einsiedeln (Schweiz) gefundene Aufnahme vom ersten
Museum in Hr?ova bot den Anlass fr die im folgenden Beitrag prsentierte Untersuchung. Dabei sind
die noch erhaltenen Informationen zum ersten Museum der Stadt zusammengestellt worden, das in den
ersten Jahre des 20. Jhs. von Lehrer V.I. Cotovu gegrndet wurde. Die Schriften von Vasile Prvan und

Stefan Vlcu, Quelques aspects de la cration et lactivit des coles roumaines de Bulgarie entre
1895-1924 (p. 319-331)
En Bulgarie, pendant la priode ci-dessus mentionne, il y avait deux coles roumaines. La premire et la
plus importante Sofia et lautre Gorna Djumaja, au sud du pays, les deux totalisant, au maximum de
leur taux doccupation, plus de 200 lves par anne. Les coles de Bulgarie ont reprsent un succs

Iliyana Marcheva (Sofia), Challenges to Bulgaria integration into United Europe at the End of the
1980s and the Beginning of the 1990s (p. 357-366)
The article examines the initial steps of Bulgaria to the European Community in the period 1989-1992,
when all the countries from the Eastern Bloc strived to become members of the European economic and
political area, dominated by the new world leading power the USA. The analysis of specialized
literature and accessible published and unpublished documents from Soviet and Bulgarian archives on the
establishing of the first contacts between Bulgaria and the EC reveal how hard it was for the country to
surmount its image of a state that was the most loyal satellite of the USSR, with ethnic problems
regarding the Turkish minority and with financial and economic problems ensuing from the loss of
markets and growing foreign debt. A special attention is paid to the fact that during the negotiations for
diplomatic recognition, trade-economic agreement, association with the EC, all the political forces both
former communists and anticommunists showed readiness to make big compromises. Power was the
pledge. That was how, similar to the processes in the other East European countries, the foundations of
the transition to parliamentary democracy and market economy were laid in Bulgaria. The difference in
the pace of the changes was a result of the internal political situation in Bulgaria and the EUs readiness
to expand to the East.

La rhabilitation de la protection des minorits depuis la fin de la Guerre froide est un grand dfi pour les
tats ?ngags dans le processus de lintgration europenne. Larticle prsente les principales
rpercussions de lactivit internationale en faveur de la protection minotitaire dans lespace de lEurope
du Sud-Est, et les dimensions des politiques domestiques respectives concernant: la reconnaissance
juridique des minorits, lautonomie territoriale et lautonomie personnelle, les droits minoritaires,
lenseignement des langues minoritaires et la reprsentation politique des minorits. La diversit des
approches nationales domine luniformit. Au cours des annes 1990 les tats de lex-Bloc de lEst
adoptaient les principes du droit minoritaire non pas exclusivement cause de lintgration europenne,
mais galement ou mme prioritairement cause de leurs propres intrts politiques. Dun part, la
pression normative des structures europenes a influenc les politiques intrieures des nouvelles
dmocraties balkaniques concernant les droits des minorits. Dautre part, il serait difficile de parler
dun transfert rel de politique de lOuest lEst dautant plus quil ny a pas un modle strictement
occidental de politique minoritaire. Compte tenu que les formes dexistence et de promotion des cultures
minoritaires sont plus institutionalises dans les pays de lEurope centrale et orientale que dans les pays
de lEurope occidentale, il est possible que le processus de lintgration europenne pourait aboutir
quelque transfert de politique des nouvelles dmocraties dans les vieilles dmocraties , y compris
dans le Sud-Est europen.

J ulia Zlatkova (Sofia), The Life of St. Mary the Younger: an Unusual Example of Female Sanctity
of the Middle Byzantine Period (p. 465-474)
This paper presents a peculiar type of a female saint, a type of a married saint, which was rare and not so
popular. The cult of St. Mary the Younger was a family cult that was promoted in spite of the strong
opposition of the church hierarchy, and in contrast to the traditional ideal of sainthood. The appearance
of this type of sanctity in that particular period (ninth-tenth century) reflects the changing attitudes

Font: Fountains for Ablutions in the Byzantine Constantinopolitan Context (p. 5-24)
My intention in this paper is to use primary and other literary sources available and to compare them with
coeval archaeological findings and remains and with iconographic sources (miniatures, engraves,
frescoes) to propose comprehensive reflection on the fountain for ablutions or phiales and their shape in
the Byzantine Constantinopolitan context from the 4th century to the Ottoman conquest. A particular
attention will be given to the phiale, which once stood in the atrium of St. Sophia.

Byzantine Title: "Despot of the Black Sea" (p. 25-30)
A letter of January 1446 sent by King Alfonso V of Aragon and Naples to Demetrios Palaiologos, brother
of the Byzantine Emperor John VIII, employs in relation to the latter in the term of Despot of the Black
Sea". The title may have been bestowed upon Demetrios in 1440, soon after the return of the Byzantine
delegation from Florence, and it reflects in fact the Byzantine conception of the unity of the Pontic
space, with the sea lying at the core.

Three Poems by Raimbaut de Vaqueiras (p. 55-74)
The purpose of this short article is not that of interpreting, analyzing in detail, or clearing out the mystery
behind the presence of the Vlachs in two (or three) troubadour texts written by Raimbaut de Vaqueiras. It
merely tries to bring forth a few detailed pieces of information concerning these texts, to correct previous
hypotheses, and to replicate them as annexes, so that they may be accessible to Romanian historians, or
to explain their close context. Previous remarks and selected fragments have been published by D.
G?zdaru more than half a century ago, without extended references, due to the novelty of the matter, and
the historical analysis of these texts did not change in Romanian historiography. Thus, one should cite
without more ado the original text and try to interpret it later.

how long it took the ancient travellers to journey from and to the Romanian lands because I knew from
literature that the Danube provinces have had a connection with Mount Sinai for more than five
centuries. With the means of transport available, for example, in the sixteenth century, how long would it
have taken to transport the Romanian treasures to the monastery?

Elisabeta Negrau (The National University of Art, Bucharest), Byzantine Legacy and Modern
Greek Influences in the Wallachian Culture of the 17th- 18th Centuries (p. 89-100)
The history of the Romanian medieval culture includes the chapters of post-Byzantine history which, at
least up to the middle of the 16th century, are forms of survival of the Byzantine culture and civilization.
However, the Byzantine paradigm persists, in fact, as a referential system up to the end of the 18th
century. An excursion into the history of the relations kept by the Romanians with post-Byzantine
Constantinople is necessary in order to bring forward the official sumptuousness of the medieval culture
and its determinant role as a model and direction for the popular culture. The study reveals the
post-Byzantine Greek influences in Wallachia, discerning contemporary Greek elements, forms of the
Byzantine ideal preserved in Romanian culture, theological discourses and national reactions.

The vocabulary Marco Bandini used when describing the Romanian realities encountered during his tour
through Moldavia under Vasile Lupu contains a number of lexical influences exerted by the Classical
model, by Mediaeval Latin and by vernacular languages. The present article analyses such influences
found in Bandinis account of several realia from the following fields: 1. administrative units and their
inhabitants; 2. the Court (the Prince, the noblemen, the high officials and the army); 3. religion; 4.
toponymy and anthroponymy; 5. everyday life.

roumanisation dun espace sacr: le plerinage au monastre de Celic Dere dans le contexte de

Je mattache analyser la relation entre la construction de lidentit ethnique et la participation au
plerinage de la Vierge, telle quelle est observable Celic Dere, un monastre du nord de la Dobroudja,
en Roumanie. Je chercherai montrer que, dans le contexte de la culture locale, lidentit ethnique joue
un rle secondaire. Les arguments sarticulent en deux mouvements. Je tcherai dabord de dmontrer
que le modle spirituel du plerinage de Celic Dere nest pas la Via Crucis, mais lEucharistie. Je
chercherai ensuite les sources possibles de ce modle. A cet effet, je suivrai deux axes de rflexion,
tentant dtablir : 1) les ressemblances avec le plerinage dUspenia, monastre tenu par les Lipovans de
Roumanie, situ dans les environs de Celic Dere, mais aussi avec le slava, praznik et kourban que lon

des saints musulmans htrodoxes, vnrs en Bulgarie (p. 131-140)
Une particularit remarquable des saints, vnrs par les musulmans htrodoxes en Bulgarie, qui suscite
tout de suite la curiosit et provoque de nombreuses questions, ce sont leurs noms. Larticle propose
quelques hypothses de lorigine de ce phnomne. Une premire hypothse est base sur la composition
complexe du nom chez les arabes, conjugue avec les pithtes, attribues aux Imams chiites. Une
deuxime piste de recherche est constitue par le lien entre les noms et les surnoms des mystiques, dune
part, et les techniques, utilises afin darriver la fana (lunion avec Dieu). Cette analyse est complte
par un examen de limportance, attribue aux noms des saints (dont le sens aujourdhui est souvent
oubli) par la tradition orale des musulmans en Europe du Sud-Est.

Vorliegende Untersuchung ist einem bis z. Z. noch unerforschten Aspekt der osmanischen Kultur im
Temeswarer Vilayet gewidmet. Die Daten aus den osmanischen Quellen ermglichen uns, die vom
islamischen Unterricht und den osmanischen Gelehrten in der muslimischen Gesellschaft aus Temeswar
und dem gleichnamigen Vilayet gespielte Rolle genau zu umreien. Es handelt sich dabei sowohl um
deren bedeutende didaktische Ttigkeit, wie auch um den grundlegenden Einflu der Ulema. Wie
brigens auf dem Gesamtgebiet des Osmanischen Reiches, haben auch die Ulema aus dem Temeswarer
Vilayet das Wirken des brokratischen Staatsgefges gesichert und den islamisch-sunnitischen Glauben
unangefochten erhalten. Dadurch trugen die Ulema, genau wie es die Derwische ihrerseits taten, zum
Bestehen der Kultur der in der Masse der christlichen steuerzahlenden Bevlkerung des Temeswarer
Vilayets zerstreuten muslimischen Bewohner wesentlich bei.

Opinion on Western Piracy in the Ottoman Mediterranean about the Late-Sixteenth and Early-
Seventeenth Century (p. 165-173)
The Northern pirates, such as the English and the Dutch, as soon as they entered the Mediterranean,
combined piracy with trade, being fully equipped for both activities. The piracy was one of the ways to
impose the English commercial interests in the Levant after 1580, in the detriment of France and Venice.
The constant complaints of Franois Savary de Brves about the English privateering in the Levant
caused some reactions from the Ottoman authorities. A juridical opinion (fetva), issued by the ?eyh
l-Islam Mehmed bin Saadeddin (1601-1603) and copied in the Manuscrit Turc 130 (BNF, Division
Orientale), put the question of the violent actions of the English privateers in the Mediterranean.

de Macdoine (p. 5-12)
Dans les parlers albanais en Macdoine, qui, gnralement, font partie du dialecte gugue, il y a un groupe de mots
du fonds autochtone que lalbanais a en commun avec le roumain. Les phontismes archaques qui caractrisent
ces mots sont utiles la recherche tymologique du fonds en question. Il sagit des termes, qui, par rapport aux
variantes quon prend en considration de rgle, prsentent une forme encore plus proche de celle de leurs
correspondants roumains.
Un autre groupe est form de quelques mots emprunts tard, par hasard, au daco-roumain (lumina, masa, popor,
etc.). Une srie de ces termes peut tre explique aussi par laroumain ou par litalien.

Dans le Sud-est de lEurope, tous les deux peuples romans, dalmate et roumain, ont conserv le nom hrit
Romanus. Se trouvant prs dune autre langue romane (litalien), dans un fort milieu allogne (slave, albanais), parl
par un nombre de locuteurs se rduisant rapidement, le dalmate a perdu, lencontre du roumain, quelques sicles
avant son propre vanouissement, les termes qui dsignaient le peuple et la langue. Le fait que, dans deux zones
diffrentes du Sud-est europen on peut constater la continuation du mme ethnonyme, prouve que les deux
populations avaient des contacts faibles ou que ces contacts taient absents.

Jahrhundert - Narthexprogramm des Klosterkirchen in der Wallachei (p. 77-89)
Darstellungen der Akathistos Hymnos erscheinen erst im XIV-ten J ahrhundert byzantinische Wandmalerei. Die
Ausbreitung einer liturgischen Thematik auerhalb der Altarapsis, besonders ins Pastophorien und Seitenschiffe,
wurde als eine der wichtigsten Tendenzen der XIII-ten und XIV-ten J ahrhunderts byzantinische Wandmalerei
verteidigt. Als Gottesmutter geweihtes Gesung und gleichzeitigen Huldigung der Menschwerdung Christi gehrt der

sicles: La Roue de la Vie. Deux squences visuelles, des cryptages du
temps linaire et, respectivement, circulaire La Roue de la vie (ou des ges de la vie) et La Roue de Fortune
ont fait fortune dans lart de lOccident mdival (dans les dcorations en pierre des cathdrales, dans la peinture
murale des glises et dans des manuscrits enlumins). Quelques sicles plus tard, La Roue de la Vie se retrouve
dans lunivers des fresques post-byzantines, prsente conformment aux indications des Erminia Canons de
peinture byzantine. Les images de lespace roumain et bulgare tmoignent de la manire dont les peintres dglise
itinrants ont apprhend et interprt le modle propos par le Manuel de peinture de Denys de Fourne.

In this paper we analyse certain legends dealing with the formation of the physical landscape of the area of
Mourgana in Thesprotia, Greece. Such legends depict the mythological thought and ideology of gender held by the

inhabitants of the village of Milea (formally Kostana) in the province of Philiates belonging to the Prefecture of
Thesprotia. Our approach is structural-functionalist with emphasis upon structuralism. In particular, our research
reveals the following: 1. A negative attitude towards certain female imaginary beings. 2. A positive attitude towards
snakes as bearers of life, fecundity and fertility of the earth. 3. Our interpretation relies upon the imaginary and in
general, the symbolic system of the inhabitants of the area. The paper employs data deriving from ethnographic
fieldwork carried out in the summers of 1982 and 2002.

I am presenting hereafter a neglected text concerning the monasteries of Mount Athos in Paul of Aleppos journal of
his travels in 1652-1658 when he accompanied his father, Patriarch Makarios III Ibn al-Zaim, to Moldavia,
Wallachia, Russia and the Cossaks lands. My article includes the first translation of Pauls list of names of the
Athonite monasteries. Connections between the Holy Mount and the Rumanian Orthodox Church as well as the
rulers of Wallachia and Moldavia are also evoked. Closing comments refer to the Archdeacons interest in these
monastic communities and the major significance of his work for Christian Arabic literature.

and Moldo-Wallachians From the Late Fourteenth to Mid Sixteenth Centuries (I) (p. 211-231)
The political moments when the voivodes had accepted to pay tribute and to submit themselves to the Porte were
called acknowledgments of allegiance (nchinare, in Moldo-Wallachian chronicles). In Wallachia, this allegiance was
established during Mircea the Olders reign (1386-1418) and its conditions changed in 1462 at Radu the
Handsome's enthronement, even though a complete and long-term submission was imposed in the third decade of
the sixteenth century. In Moldavia, the paying of tribute began in 1455-1456 and ended in 1538, but also the peace
agreements concluded by Stephen the Great with Mehmed II Fatih (in 1480-1481) and Bayezid II (in 1486) were
relevant episodes. Despite the resistance and peace agreements from the late-fourteenth to the mid-sixteenth
century, Wallachia and Moldavia were conquered by sultans, who would consequently invoke the right of sword
(kili hakki) over them. In Ottoman documents of the sixteenth to eighteenth centuries, the idea of conquest was
usually connected frequently to Sleyman the Magnificent, as a turning-point in the relations of the Porte with the
tributary principalities of Wallachia and Moldavia.

exalte le nationalisme qui, de mouvement culturel et dmancipation, devient une forme de domination dautres

sicle, les ouvrages du professeur allemand Gustav Weigand dcrivaient les particularits
ethnolinguistiques de la minorit roumaine de Bulgarie qui, selon lui, se partageait en deux segments: ceux qui
peuplaient le nord du pays et qui parlaient le daco-roumain et lautre segment, les Aroumains, rpandu un peu
partout dans le centre et le sud de la Bulgarie. Autrefois assez nombreuse, cette minorit a fini par tre, pour la
plupart, assimile par llment majoritaire, exception faite des alentours de Vidin (le nord-ouest du pays) o les

Le fait surprenant de trouver dans un manuscrit grec moscovite quelques pages qui ne figurent pas dans
les catalogues est un bon prtexte pour la mise en question de la cohrence dune srie de discours,
lettres et petits commentaires thme moral dont lauteur est lempereur byzantin Manuel Palologue.
Lanalyse propose dans cet article se dresse sur lhypothse que les dix textes, dont sept ne sont pas
mentionns dans le catalogue de la Collection synodale de Moscou, ont t conus en vue dun ensemble
qui a t dcompos pour des raisons qui ne lui sont pas intrinsques.

ayant appartenu Timotei Cipariu (ms. roum. 1216 BAR Cluj-Napoca). Ce qui rend ces manuscrits
uniques (outre les illustrations dexcellente qualit) cest la prsence de parallles grecs pour certains

The paper offers a survey of this motif in the preserved Moldavian mural ensembles from the 15th and
16th centuries, structured by a topologic taxonomy (occurrences in the axis of the chancel, in
proskomede niches, on triumphal arches, at the base of the domes and in outer frescoes). This
Western image adopted by a post-Byzantine iconography is compared to other examples of the Lamb
iconography in Byzantium after the Quinisext Council and is interpreted as a visual reference to the
eschatological aura of the Eucharist.

Une section de lHermeneia de Dionysios de Phourna dont le titre cite une partie de Psaume 150,6, a
toujours t considre comme lquivalent verbal des peintures correspondant aux psaumes la louange
du Seigneur qui se trouvent au Mont Athos et ailleurs, quoique celles-ci sont trs diffrentes du point de
vue iconographique. De telles peintures en concordance avec le passage de lHermeneia demeurent
encore inconnues, mais des fresques de lglise dHagios Achilleios de Pentalopho sont un hybride entre
la composition dcrite dans le Manuel et les illustrations conventionnelles des Psaumes.

Ltude porte sur deux effigies dEtienne le Grand, prince de Moldavie: une peinture de 1797 excute par
Vasile Popovici et la lithographie par Gheorghe Asachi, dater en 1822 ou 1823, cette dernire tant la
plus rpandue (au XIXe sicle) des images du hros. Le travail dAsachi, imbu de lesprit du romantisme
religieux, est inspir par la nostalgie de lhistoire nationale. Du portrait prcdent, Asachi a emprunt la
typologie du Christ, ainsi que les insignes royaux la couronne, le collier et lengolpion de tradition
byzantine. Ceux-ci taient attribus un privilge accord Alexandre le Bon par lempereur J ean VIII
Palologue lors de son passage par la Moldavie. Ayant vcu en Italie de 1808 1812, Asachi a pu
connatre le Volto Santo, la statue reliquaire conserve Lucques dans la Cathdrale Saint Martin, qui a
galement pu servir de modle.

his work.

In this article the fund of Dimitrie Cantemir (16731723) kept under n 25 in the Archives of Orientalists of
the Institute of Oriental Manuscripts (Russian Academy of Sciences) in St. Petersburg is examined in
detail. It contains 9 volumes in which the Latin originals of three works by this statesman and scholar are
attested: the History of the Ottoman Empire, the Description of Moldavia and the Life of Constantine
Cantemir, his father. The first of them is represented in two copies, complete (vols. 14) and incomplete
(vols. 5, 6), which appear to be of considerable value for the preparation of its first critical edition.

Two engraved copies of the map of Moldavia, recently discovered in Paris and Berlin, and a manuscript
copy found in Dresden serve to the author to explore the vast bibliography of the subject. He is also
attempting to trace the odyssey of the Cantemiriana through Western libraries and collections.

The authors establish the authorship of a Romanian text preserved in ms. 67 (ex-Brera 316) from Archivio
di Stato in Venice, a short chronology of the Ottoman conquest in the Balkans, in Asia Minor and Egypt
between 1353 and 1529, translated from Italian by Vlad Botulescu in the 18th century. The Italian original,
Breve descrittione della prosperit della casa Ottomana, is an appendix to a reshuffled version of the
Historia de vita et gestis Scanderbegi of Marino Barlezio assigned to Demetrio Franco. An annotated
edition of both Romanian and Italian texts is given.

Viorel Panaite (Institute of South-East European Studies), From Allegiance to Conquest. Ottomans
and Moldo-Wallachians from the Late Fourteenth to Mid-Sixteenth Centuries (II) (p. 197-212)
The political moments when the voivodes had accepted to pay tribute and to submit themselves to the
Porte were called acknowledgments of allegiance (nchinare, in Moldo-Wallachian chronicles). In
Wallachia, this allegiance was established during Mircea the Olders reign (13861418) and its conditions
changed in 1462 at Radu the Handsome's enthronement, even though a complete and long-term
submission was imposed in the third decade of the sixteenth century. In Moldavia, the paying of tribute
began in 14551456 and ended in 1538, but also the peace agreements concluded by Stephen the Great
with Mehmed II Fatih (in 14801481) and Bayezid II (in 1486) were relevant episodes. Despite the
resistance and peace agreements from the late-fourteenth to the mid-sixteenth century, Wallachia and
Moldavia were conquered by sultans, who would consequently invoke the right of sword over them. In
Ottoman documents of the sixteenth to eighteenth centuries, the idea of conquest was usually connected
frequently to Sleyman the Magnificent, as a turning-point in the relations of the Porte with the tributary
principalities of Wallachia and Moldavia.

Cristian Luca (University of Galati), Simeone e Agapios Kolivas, due precettori finora ignorati dei figli
di Alessandro Ypsilantis e Gregorio III Ghica (p. 213-224)
Simeon Kolivas (? 1774) and his nephew Agapios Kolivas (c. 1742 ?), natives of Kefalonia, were
Orthodox Greeks, and Venetian subjects. The monk Simeon Kolivas kept since 17621763 the
parish of Neohoraki from the diocese of Chalcedon in the Ottoman Empire. Agapios Kolivas was a
priest: after studying at the Evangelical School of Smyrna, he taught classical Greek to Parthenios,
metropolitan of Caesarea Mazaca, and about 1770 settled in Constantinople. He was there the
preceptor of the sons of Phanariot families. Some Venetian documents of 17631774 reveal that
Simeon Kolivas was the preceptor of Constantine Ypsilanti and Demetrios Ypsilanti, Alexander
Ypsilantis sons, probably from 1768 to 1772, whereas Agapios Kolivas was the preceptor of Gregory
III Ghicas sons, most probably during the period 17711774. It was through their involvement in the
education and formation of the sons of the rulers of Wallachia and Moldavia that the two scholars
contributed, though only in a small measure, to the modernization of the Romanian Principalities in the
18th century, by helping the cultural progress of their political elite.

Les documents prsents ici concernent une mission que Charles Cunningham, le viceconsul britannique
de Galati, a remplie en septembredcembre 1854, tant envoy en Bulgarie par lambassadeur Stratford
de Redcliffe pour se rendre compte de ltat gnral du pays, Cunningham a visit Varna, Ruse, Silistra,
Aytos, Shumen et Tarnovo. Ses rapports contineunt des renseignements sur les abus commis par les
troupes irrgulires de bachibosuks contre la population chrtienne, sur la situation religieuse en Bulgarie
et sur lconomie de la rgion.

Der Aufsatz ist der Rolle der katholischen Bildungsinstitutionen in Adrinopel als Modernisierungsfaktor der
bulgarischen Gesellschaft in der zweiten Hlfte des 19. und zu Beginn des 20. J hs. gewidmet. Es handelt
sich um die Untersuchung eines spezifischen Problems der bulgarischen Geschichte, welches nicht zu den
Themen gehrt, die die Aufmerksamkeit der Historiker auf sich gezogen haben. Fr die Zwecke meiner
Arbeit habe ich verschiedene Gruppen von Quellen benutzt: neue Dokumente aus bulgarischen Archiven,
Memoiren und Reisebeschreibungen sowie Periodika aus der betreffenden Epoche.

En Grce moderne, le culte des morts se manifeste dans les ftes rituelles funraires, les rites et
crmonies commmoratives (comme le troisime et neuvime jour aprs la mort, et les trois premiers
anniversaires), et les ftes calendaires, les psychosabbata (cest--dire psychosabbato, psyche=me,
sabbato=samedi), ou Samedis des mes , pendant le Carnaval et le Carme et avant la rcolte du
grain. Pendant les crmonies, les gens vont dans les cimetires pour dposer des offrandes
alimentaires, surtout le kolyva, sur les tombes. On croit aussi que les morts visitent leurs maisons pendant
le Carme ou la semaine Pascale, dans quelques endroits jusqu la rcolte du grain. Comme on trouve
de pareils phnomnes dans lancienne Grce, je vais comparer les ftes et rites des morts en Grce,

contemporaine et ancienne, et ainsi faire une comparaison dans la longue dure.

ALE projects published until now seven volumes of linguistic maps, accompanied by monographical
comments. ALE focus on the relationship between the languages of Europe, the linguistics layers of

The Farsherots (sg. farsirot, pl. farsirot) are living mostly in Albania, but also in Greece and The Republic
of Macedonia. In Romania, the Farsherots are represented by the Shopan subgroup (sg. sopan) and the
Plisot subgroup (sg. plisot) settled in Dobrogea between the two world wars together with the other
Romanians. The sopaI,i Farsherots, originary coming from the Frashari area, settled in Romania mostly
during the second half of the 19th century from Greece. The plisot Farsherots came in Romania from
Albania, settling in such places as Palazu Mare, near Constanta, and Pipera, near Bucharest. The Greeks
call them also caraguni (black strings wearers) and arvanitovlahi (Vlachs originary from Albania) while the
Albanians call them rmri and cobani. Their way of life connected with grazing means transhumance and
nomadism, each with their particular features.

In the second half of the 19th century, many Romanian writers travel through the lands of the Ottoman
Empire, in search of the Aromanians that were spread throughout the Balkan Peninsula. These travels
were made in a time when the Aromanians began to be animated by nationalistic feelings and began to
fight for their own school network and for church autonomy. Aromanians nationalist aspirations raised
excitement in Bucharest, and also an unprecedented interest for their history and their lifestyle. Interest that
was accompanied by a real concern about their future. A future which, in 2010, looks completely different
than what these travelers did imagin.
