Ageing in Place An Overview

The ageing population in Singapore remains one of the most pressing issues of our times. By 2030, our senior population (65 years old and above) will grow to be one-fifth of our total resident population, enough to fill nine Toa Payoh towns1. To meet the anticipated increase in care needs, merely building more old folks homes is not an adequate solution. As such, recently, the Singapore government has shifted her focus to Ageing in Place. Under this scheme, aged care and support facilities will be located within each local community to allow more seniors to enjoy their old age close to their loved ones, for as long as possible. The longterm aim is to make every neighbourhood senior-friendly by developing a range of local, more accessible aged care services to meet the elderlys various needs, to support their caregivers, and to allow their families to remain in close contact even if they need to be cared for in institutions. The 3rd Eco Design Challenge aims to enable you to understand challenges faced by the elderly and acquire knowledge of environmental conservation. You will also improve your critical thinking, creativity, project management, organizational and interpersonal skills as you brainstorm, write proposal, construct models, prepare poster and rehearse for presentation.

As such, in the spirit of Ageing in Place, the government strives to boost the level of participation of the elderly in community activities. This will enhance both their physical, mental and emotional wellbeing. In addition, to ensure that senior citizens can remain active for as long as possible, the government also plans to improve the quality of the healthcare systems in the community. In concert with national efforts, in this category, you are required to design an Aged Care Community Centre an ideal place for families to drop off their aged parents during the day and have the peace of mind to focus on their work, knowing their parents are being cared for. This compound (approximately 60 80m), located within the community, should consist of: A Senior Activity Centre: A place where seniors can make friends, engage in regular social activities and receive social support. A Senior Care Centre: A place that provides basic day care, dementia day care, day rehabilitation services and basic nursing services. In the Written Proposal and Presentation, you are required to: Elaborate on all features of your Centre, Elaborate on how your design is elderly-friendly and eco-friendly, Elaborate on the list of activities and services you want to find in this Centre, Analyse how your Centre is able to provide all-round care for the general well-being of the elderly who are residing in the community, Justify how your design and facilities used are applicable to local context.
