Introduction

OlaSMS is one of the most powerful SMS software for mobile phones with loads of exciting
features that make text messaging dynamic, content rich and full of fun. Following are some
of the key features of OlaSMS. You can send sound effects, smileys, animated GIFs, web
pages, text documents, colorful dynamic banners and other Java Applications to your friends
and loved ones by using this innovative messaging platform. Following are the key features
available in Olasms version 1.0. The number of available features and software appearance
may very between different mobile models.

 Send and Receive SMS messages as in a Chat Session

 Add and Remove Secret Contacts
 Lock OlaSMS with a password so that no one can read your secret messages

Important: Both message sender and recipients must have OlaSMS installed on their
mobile-phones in order to use the above mentioned features.

How to install?

O
laSMS can be purchased from the links given at Edumid website
(www.edumid.com) or Nokia Software Market website at
(www.softwaremarket.nokia.com). Once you will purchase the OlaSMS software
you will receive the license code against your purchase and a download link will be sent on the
mobile phone you have provided during online purchase. Save your license code as you will
need it during installation and registration.

Once you download the software, it would be installed in the Applications folder. During the
installation please ignore the security warning and continue the installation.

Start the application and allow it to start automatically when prompted. When the software will
run for the first time you would need a license code to register the software. The screen will be
similar to as shown in Figure 1.

Please type in the license code you received from Nokia Software Market in the “Enter License
Key” text box. After entering the license code please press Register button to start the
registration process.
Important: In order to Register OlaSMS needs to connect to the net, it is therefore important
that you ensure that GPRS/WAP is activated on your phone.

Once the registration is complete you have to exit the OlaSMS and re-start it manually to start
using it.

Important: Please give your complete mobile number with country code when prompted
during OlaSMS purchase from Nokia Software Market website.

How to add friends?

In OlaSMS Contacts can be added , modified and deleted by selecting Options->Friends

Command as shown in Figure 2.

After selecting Friends command from the Options menu, the software will display the
names of existing friends (if you have added them earlier) as shown in Figure 3.To add a
new friend you need to select New Friend command as shown below and add name and
phone number. When the Friends Manager screen is displayed, you can enter the Name and
Mobile Number and use Options->Add command to add it to your OlaSMS friends list. You
can also add number from existing phone book contacts by selecting
Options->Add from Contacts command (if available). To delete a contact, select it and
then use Options->Delete command.

SMS versus Banner?

To send SMS there are two options available, users can either use New Message or
New Banner command. The difference between the two is simple, New Message would
allow users to send SMS with or without available effects whereas Banners allow user to
select Font, Font Size, Background Color, Foreground color and dynamic effects.

A message with effects is shown in Figure 4a and a banner message is shown in Figure 4b.

A banner can also have a dynamic effect attached with it, such as Presentation effect
that displays one word at a time as if it is playing presentation slides. Another
difference is that messages cannot be previewed before sending whereas a banner can
be previewed before sending allowing user to change colors, fonts and dynamic
effects before sending it to the recipient.

Smileys, Bubble alphabets, Vibration , Flash effects and Web Links can be added
only in Messages and not in Banners.

Important: After adding effects strange characters such as ∧ and # appear in the message.
Please do not remove them or other alphabets attached with them.

How to add effects?

Following unique effects are available in OlaSMS making it the most powerful and
content rich SMS software.

Bubble Alphabets
Vibration Effect
Flashlight Effect

To add an effect to a message use Options->New Message on Chat Session screen which
would display Enter Message screen. You can write your message here and insert effects as
well. In order to insert an effect you need to select Options->Insert Effects as shown in
Figure 5a. This command will display the Effects menu as shown in Figure 5b.

If you add an effect you must use Back command until you get to Enter Message screen in
order to send it to the recipient. Read next section in order to learn how to send the message.

Important: Sound Effects will work on Nokia S60 devices only if Warning Tones are set to
On in Phone Settings. Some effects are not available on all phone models.

How to send SMS?

There are five different ways you can send SMS using OlaSMS.

1) Compose a new Message, insert effects if required go back to Enter Message screen and
use Options->Send To command. This will show the Enter mobile number? Screen. Enter
the mobile number of the person to whom you want to send the message and afterwards use
Options->Send command to send the message.

2) If you have received a message from a friend, you can reply with a message by using
Options->Reply or Reply(Right Soft Key) command at Chat Session screen. Note that a
Reply command will only appear if you have received a message from someone.

3) If you have received a message you can forward it by selecting

and selecting Options->Forward at Chat Session Screen. It would display the list of friends
you have added. Select the friends you want to forward the last received message. Forward
will only work if you have added friends in the contact list.

4) If you want to send same message to multiple friends use Options->Broadcast at Enter
Message screen. Make sure you have added some contacts using friends command before
you use this command.

5) Compose a banner using Options->New Banner command, preview it and/or send it.

How to send
Animations?

Important: Animations and other Web content sent by you will only be played in your
friends mobile if your number is added in his/her friend’s list. Similarly your mobile will
only play animations and webcontent if it is sent by one of the contacts added in your friends
list.

There are plethora of websites providing free animated GIFs such as 3D Animated Smileys.
OlaSMS users can send any of these Animated GIFs by using the WebLink effect. Imagine
that an animated GIS has following direct link.

mobile, you need to follow these steps.

1) Start composing a new message by using Options->New Message command.

2) On Enter Message Screen use Options->Insert Effects command. This will display the
effects menu.
3) Select Weblink from the effects menu and type the weblink address as follows.

http://www.edumid.com/tease.gif. Now use OK command to insert this link into the

message.

4) Now send it as you would send any other SMS using OlaSMS.

5) On users mobile the animated GIF will be downloaded automatically and played in the
main Chat screen of OlaSMS.

Important: After adding weblink, a # sign appears at the end of Weblink on Enter Message
screen. Please do not remove # letter. Please do not send more than one weblink in a single
message. DO NOT COMBINE OTHER EFFECTS WITH WEBLINKS

Important: ANY CONTENT AVAILABLE ON WEB CAN BE SENT TO YOUR FRIENDS

MOBILE BY USING WEBLINK, INCLUDING TEXT FILES.

How to send Audio
Messages?

In order to send an audio message, you need to follow these steps.

1) Record your voice message using some sound recording

application on your mobile. Use AMR or MP3 format for
recording.

2) Upload the file to some website using a PC or mobile phone

if possible

3) Send the link of the file to your friend using Weblink effect
as described on page 9.

Important: Your friend will only receive the Audio message, if he/she has added you in
Friends list of OlaSMS and has GPRS activated.

How to send
Video Message?
Weblink effect can be used by sending a Video message to your
Friends as well.

1) Record your video using built-in Camera of your phone in

3GP or MP4 format.
2) Upload it to a free website that allows video uploads.
3) After uploading note down its URL (i.e Link)
4) Make sure that it ends with the extension such as
www.xyz.com/videos/mymessage.3gp
5) Send the message with Weblink inserted using
Options->Insert Effects commands

Important: Your friend will only receive the Video message, if he/she has added you in
Friends list of OlaSMS and has GPRS activated.

How to send
Pictures?

Pictures can also be shared with your friends and family members using
OlaSMS. Follow these steps in order to send pictures.

1) Capture your picture in JPG , GIF or any other format (if not available already)
2) Reduce it dimensions i.e Width and Height by scaling down using Microsoft Paint on
Windows 2000, XP or Vista. Use other image manipulation program if available for your
platform incase you are using some other operating system such as “Preview” for Mac OS X.

3) Use “Save As” option of the ♦Microsoft Paint or Apple’s Mac Preview software to save
the image in PNG format (Make sure that the file is saved with extension png not PNG).

4) Upload the file to websites that allow uploading pictures such as photobucket.
5) Note down the URL
6) Send to your friends by using Weblink effect of OlaSMS.

Important: Your friend will only receive the pictures, if he/she has added you in Friends list
of OlaSMS and has GPRS activated. If the PNG file has dimensions greater than the mobile
screen size, the software will automatically scale it down to fit the screen. Use only WebLink
to add URLs. Use only Weblink to send pictures.

How to manage
Chats?

All messages sent and received by you are displayed in Chat Session screen. The latest
message received scrolls on top most line of the screen. These messages can be saved by
using Chats command and then by selecting New Chat. To load or delete a chat you have to
select it and do the operation.

How to modify
Settings?

OlaSMS has a powerful settings menu that allows users to

Turn On/Off Startup screen of OlaSMS

Block all other messages except from the friends
Allow Weblinks such as Animated GIF, text files, web pages etc to open
Turn On/Off Sounds
Change the Volume of the Sound Effects
Allow or Disallow Vibrations
Allow or Disallow Flashlight Effect
Enable/Disable Password Protection
Change the password key

Why to use CLEAR

command?

Mobile devices have limited screen size. Although they do allow scrolling, at times it is
difficult to manage long chats. Moreover it has been observed that a big cluttered chat screen
slows down the processor. It is therefore strongly recommended to use Clear screen
frequently. Note that Clear command does not clear the memory and if you save the chat
even after using Clear command. It would save all the messages.

How to set Password?

To set the password go to Settings menu and enable password. The default password is
2004. Type in your own 4-digit password instead of 2004. Make sure that it’s a password
you can learn by heart. If your password is enabled nobody will be able to see your SMS
chats and secret contact list.

Inbox and Sent Items
Folders?

If someone sends you a message using OlaSMS, it would not appear in

the Inbox and would only appear when OlaSMS application is run. You can save received
and sent messages by using Save Chat command from within OlaSMS. This makes your
messages secret as you can lend your mobile phone to your friends, without any fear of
getting your privacy violated. No one can read messages you have received or sent until
he/she knows your password to run OlaSMS.

What is Chat
Functionality?

All sent and received messages appear on the same screen hence giving the impression of a
Chat. It is more convenient as you do not need to move between Inbox and Sent items to see
what messages were exchanged between you and your friends.

 Autostart
Functionality

If you have OlaSMS software installed on your phone and your phone is Idle, you
would still receive messages. Your phone would automatically request you to start OlaSMS
once it receives any messages sent from another mobile phone using OlaSMS.

How much these

messages cost?

You can send built-in sounds and built-in smileys, flashlight effect, vibration at the
cost of a normal SMS. However if you send a Weblink, recipient of your message may incur
cost according to the size of the online resource that you have sent her/him.

Why should I add

Friends in the contacts?

You can send messages to anyone without adding their numbers in your friend’s list.
However if you add their names and numbers in the friends list, you would draw following
benefits.

1) You do not need to type their names use Options->Broadcast to select the friends from
the contact list as recipients of the message. You do not need to type numbers every time you
want to send the message.

2) You will only receive Weblinks such as video, audio or pictures from numbers that are
added in your friend’s list as downloading this content from Web has cost associated with it.

3) On the main chat screen, the message will be displayed with the name of the friend and
not by the number.

4) You can only Forward the received messages to friends in the contact list

Tips and Tricks

Incoming Message Notification

On Series 60 Nokia mobiles, OlaSMS can be run in the background by starting OlaSMS and

then pressing the key on main Chat Session screen. This would bring the Main Menu of
the S60 device. Now press “Exit”. The OlaSMS is now running in background, as soon as an
incoming message with a sound effect will arrive you will know.

Saving favorite Weblink URL

Often it is difficult to remember long and complex links to the web content. The best way to
use them is to copy your favorite links to pictures, videos, animated GIFs and sound effects
in a text file on your computer. Lets call this file MYLINKS.TXT. You can send this file to
your S60 mobile using Bluetooth or data cable. Once the file is saved in mobile. You can
open it using “Notes” application in “Office” folder or “Application”. Once the file is open
in “Notes”. Use and scroll keys (right, left, up, down) or
Options->Editing options->Copy to select the link you want to send to your friends. Now
press again and from the menu select “Copy” if you selected the link using this key in
the previous step. Now you can paste it in the OlaSMS, Weblink screen and send to your
friends. Note that these steps of copying and pasting may be different for different phone
models. It is therefore advised to consult the User Manual of your device to see relevant
sections of Copy/Paste operations.
