Standard ASCE 7
Minimum Design Loads for Buildings and Other Structures
Standard ASCE/SEI 7-10 The second printing of Standard 7-10, which incorporates errata identified through April 6, 2011, provides requirements for general structural design and includes means for determining dead, live, soil, flood, wind, snow, rain, atmospheric ice, and earthquake loads, as well as their combinations, which are suitable for inclusion in building codes and other documents. Standard 7-10 offers a complete update and reorganization of the wind load provisions, expanding them from one chapter into six. It contains new ultimate event wind maps with corresponding reductions in load factors, so that the loads are not affected, and updates the seismic loads with new risk-targeted seismic maps. The snow, live, and atmospheric icing provisions are updated as well. In addition, the Standard includes a detailed Commentary with explanatory and supplementary information designed to assist building code committees and regulatory authorities. Standard ASCE/SEI 7 is an integral part of building codes in the United States. Many of the load provisions are substantially adopted by reference in the International Building Code and the NFPA 5000 Building Construction and Safety Code.

This guide translates the changes to the wind load provisions of ASCE Standard 7-10 into a form readily accessible by structural engineers, architects, contractors, building officials and inspectors, and allied professionals. It focuses on the updates to the wind load requirements, which have undergone the most extensive revision since the 1995 Standard. This handy reference briefly summarizes each change to the wind provisions that might affect actual practice or enforcement and immediately follows up with the precise wording of the change. The impact of each update is explained in clear, straightforward language accompanied by diagrams, examples, and color photographs and illustrations to enrich the readers understanding.

Snow Loads
Guide to the Snow Load Provisions of ASCE 7-10
Michael ORourke
ASCE Press
This book provides a detailed and authoritative interpretation of the snow load provisions of Standard ASCE/SEI 7-10. With clear, concise language, ORourke illustrates the key concepts and guides for applying the provisions to the design of new and existing structures that could collect falling or drifting snow. Like its predecessors that accompanied earlier editions of the Standard, this new book includes examples of flat roof loads, sloped roof loads, partial loads, and all types of conventional drift loading. New material includes design examples for leeward drift and sliding loads on adjacent structures and an improved discussion of bays susceptible to ponding loads.

Applied GPS for Engineers and Project Managers
Clement A. Ogaja
ASCE Press
Clement Ogaja introduces civil engineersespecially those who are not already licensed surveyorsto the fundamental principles of global positioning technology (GPS). This book covers GPS basics, including positioning and measuring principles, techniques to improve accuracy, and an analysis of low-cost versus high-precision systems. It also explains selecting and implementing a GPS system and then demonstrates specific applications of GPS in a variety of engineering situations, including monitoring the health of structures, robotics and machine control, maritime operations, material tracking in large construction sites, site control and design, and monitoring geohazards.

This book presents the technical and practical information required by engineers to plan and implement grouting programs that are cost-effective and technically sound. Ultrafine cement, a key component in modern grouting programs, is an ideal solution for geotechnical engineers and construction contractors who are grappling with the challenges of managing costs while developing sites that may be less than ideal. This fundamental reference will be consulted frequently by geotechnical engineers who specify grouting materials for construction projects.

This book presents the results of the latest research regarding water balance covers for containing solid waste sites. This book introduces water balance covers and compares them with conventional approaches to waste containment. The authors give detailed analysis of the fundamentals of soil physics and design issues, introduce applicable ecological concepts and revegetation practices, and then move on to construction, modeling, and maintenance. Case studies drawn from current field testing add depth to the analysis.

Brian Brenner
ASCE Press
If youve ever been asked to calculate the live load for a herd of elephants If youve ever built a sand castle to study soil mechanics If youve ever had to choose between your date and your favorite bridge Brian Brenner has written the book for you. Brenner turns his pen and his signature wit to the subjects of urban sprawl, airport infrastructure planning, and, of course, bridges. These essays range from humorous to informative, autobiographical to historical. With his charming and fluid style, Brenner makes civil engineering funny, interesting, and at times, even glamorous.

engaging, occasionally thought-provoking, and more than a little amusing. Civil Engineering magazine Brenners honest, assured voice, brainiac populism and bite-sized essays make this a quirky, addictive winner that should bring out the inner civil engineer in a wide cross-section of readers. Earthquakes and Engineering
An International History
Robert K. Reitherman
ASCE Press
Reitherman provides the first comprehensive treatment of the engineering techniques that have developed in various countries to address their particular seismic problems. Fully international in scope, this book surveys the significant issues in earthquake engineering and traces the evolution of humankinds understanding of earthquakes. In addition to thorough examination of seismic technologies in structural engineering, Reitherman also considers a selection of geotechnical, architectural, and urban planning issues. This highly readable book is an essential reference for civil engineers whose work includes seismic or lifeline components. Written in a straightforward, accessible style, it will also be valuable to architects, planners, and officials at all levels of government.

This report offers practical recommendations regarding the design and safety of petrochemical facilities during and following an earthquake. For new facilities, the recommendations focus on interpreting building codes as applied to petrochemical facilities; the report also gives practical guidance on design details and considerations that are not included in building codes. For existing facilities, the guidelines offer evaluation methodologies that rely heavily on experience from past earthquakes, coupled with focused analyses. This book is valuable to structural design engineers, local building authorities, and operating personnel responsible for establishing seismic design and construction standards.

What are the regional differences in storm water and wastewater management technologies in response to urbanization? How can wetland extent and function be incorporated as an integral part of urban infrastructure systems, including effects on groundwater level? This book addresses these and a number of other key questions involving all phases of impact that the interactions among energy, environment, ecology, and socioeconomic paradigms have on human society.

Wastewater management in developing countries throughout the world is in a state of crisis. It is estimated that 2.6 billion people worldwide live without adequate sanitation. Resources are scarce, previous management systems have failed, and traditional techniques and solutions are not immediate enough, too expensive, or simply inefficient. This book investigates the complex political, economic, and cultural reasons that so many developing nations lack the ability to provide proper and effective wastewater treatment for their citizens.

Sustainability continued
This report presents guidelines advance the understanding of sustainability in the structural community and to incorporate concepts of sustainability into structural engineering standards and practices. The guidelines cover sustainable design and construction, sustainable strategies, building materials, infrastructure, and case studies. Infrastructure gets particular attention because many of the concepts and ideas in this guide that relate to infrastructure can also be applied to design and construction.

This book presents the results of the latest research regarding water balance covers for containing solid waste sites. Water balance covers (also known as store-and-release, evapotranspiration, or ET covers) are an effective and efficient alternative to conventional clay liner or geosynthetic covers, especially in arid regions. By cycling water from the soil to the atmosphere during growing seasons, water balance covers minimize the percolation of rainwater through the soil and thus the production of leachate from landfill contents. This book introduces water balance covers and compares them with conventional approaches to waste containment. Case studies drawn from current field testing add depth to the analysis.
