DIAMOND BAR HIGH SCHOOL

A Portion of Rowland Heights Annexed to Diamond Bar

The annexation process involved several community meetings that were opened to all members of the community, public hearings, and a public lighting assessment vote. Elizabeth Lee Asst. News Editor A portion of Rowland Heights was annexed to the City of Diamond Bar on Wednesday, October 14. This annexation is called the Diamond Canyon/ Crestline Drive Annexation. The portion that has been annexed is on the outskirts of Diamond Bar, the area between the 57 freeway, northern Brea Canyon Cutoff Road, and the western hills of Rowland Heights. About half of this area is undeveloped land. In 2005, a group of Crestline residents contacted the City requesting annexation into Diamond Bar. As a result of that request, the City initiated the annexation process in 2007 with the County of Los Angeles Local Agency Formation Commission, explained the City of Diamond Bars Public Information Coordinator, Cecilia Arellano. Diamond Bar officials started the annexation process because they wanted the Crestline residents to have some of the privileges that they did not previously have. Some of these privileges include voting in Diamond Bar elections and receiving permits from the City. Before the annexation, these residents had to go to downtown Los Angeles to talk to their government representatives because they were considered an unincorporated area of the L.A. County. Because of the recent annexation, the residents are now able to go to the city of Diamond Bar to speak to their government representatives. Before the annexation, the community had the Diamond Bar zip code of 91765. However, the residents could not vote for Diamond Bar elections because they were considered Rowland Heights residents, not Diamond Bar residents. This is one major reason why the residents of that area wanted to become a part of Diamond Bar. Mayor Pro Tem Carol Herrera of Diamond Bar commented, This neighborhood had always thought they were part of the city of Diamond Bar. They were not, [but] they wanted to be part of Diamond Bar. The annexation was successfully completed and approved by the Local Agency Formation Commission, a local county government agency responsible for the boundaries of cities and non-incorporated lands. Throughout the annexation process, updates were posted on the City of Diamond Bars website and residents of the considered neighborhood were informed of the progress through mail correspondence. I think it was a great thing that we did, commented Herrera. She added, It brings their government representative closer to them.

This particular play takes a different twist and it is very heart-warming, soul-searching, and it makes a person really think, commented Bland. He added, At the end of Act 1 theres a surprise, then it moves into Act 2 and at the end of Act 2 theres another twist. There are some surprises that I am not going to give away. You will have to come and see it. The fall play is an annual production held at DBHS. The cast consists of advanced and intermediate drama students who auditioned for their characters in May. They were given their roles to rehearse over the summer. We started during the summer and we had to memorize our lines. This play is harder than other plays I have done. [Dear Brutus] is more intellectual, and it is harder for us to get into the mood, commented senior Paula Zepeda. Im expecting a lot because this is, by far, my favorite play that Ive been in. It is a very powerful play. Being a senior, I couldnt have picked a better play for my last fall play, commented Parra.

Hall of Horrors and Fall Fun DBHS Marching Festival Held at Heritage Band Competes Park in Loara Band

MELODY: Band Members have been preparing for the parade since the beginning of summer with practices from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. They practiced four times a week since the start of school.

Thriller night... Students stand in line in front of the Haunted House, waiting to experience the Hall of Horrors. Ashley Chen SCARE: Admission for the Fall Fun Festival was $5 for children under eight years of age and free for adults, while admission for the Hall of Horrors was $5 for all attendees. Justin Kong Feature Theme Editor The City of Diamond Bar hosted its annual Hall of Horrors on Friday, October 30 and Saturday, October 31 from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. and its annual Fall Fun Festival on Saturday, October 31 from 4:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Heritage Park. The purpose of the Hall of Horrors is to provide high school kids from Diamond Bar High School and Diamond Ranch High School with a good, fun volunteer activity, while providing a good scare for children eight and older, said Andee Tarazon, the special events coordinator of the City of Diamond Bar. The Hall of Horrors included many scare zones that featured a graveyard scene and a cornfield walkway. Student volunteers hid in walls and corners to scare attendees in the Halloweenthemed maze. A section of the maze was decorated with neon-colored paint and volunteers provided attendees with special glasses for a three-dimensional experience of the maze. [The Hall of Horrors was] very interesting, especially when you hear high-pitched screams in your face, commented senior Brandon Chan. Admission for the Hall of Horrors was $5 per person. However, students were given a chance to print a free ticket for the Hall of Horrors on the City of Diamond Bar website to attend the event on October 30. The Fall Fun Festival included games for children to win small toy prizes and candy. The event also featured areas [Please see SCREAM on page 2]

The Diamond Bar High Schools Thundering Herd Marching band performed at the 2009 Loara Band Review in the streets of Anaheim on Saturday, October 31 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The band placed fifth out of 38 competitors. Only the top 100 Diamond Bar High band members, based on previous performances, performed in the parade. These students competed against bands from Arcadia High School, Chino Hills High School, El Dorado High School, Kennedy High School, and Riverside King High School. The kids worked very hard for the weeks coming into [the competition]. They did very well and I anticipate better things to come, commented Band Director Steve Acciani. Senior drum major member Henry Liu stated, Our band performed to the best that we could have practiced for even if our [placement was] not as high as we expected. [The competition] was definitely a growing experience and

definitely something we can use to improve. The band performed the song, Boys of the Old Brigade, a traditional military song. The competition focused on how well the participating bands could imitate a marine band. Each band was judged on a point system with 100 points distributed among three categories. These categories consisted of music performance, showmanship, and appearance. I enjoyed the time because I got to bond with my section and I got to learn about this particular competition, said Lea Pandy, a junior band member. Band members have been preparing for the parade since the start of summer with practices from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. five days a week. They have also practiced four times a week since the school year began. Even though there was a lot of pressure and a lot of time was taken up [for practice], it was all worth it because we did our best and placed well, stated sophomore band member Christine Kim. Diamond Bar achieved a new level of excellence. We did well in some parts of the competition. The students gained a lot of knowledge, said senior drumline member Awais Spall.

French Club Hosts Meeting at The Melting Pot

FONDUE: Non-French Club members were welcome to attend. The meal consisted of a cheese appetizer, a main entre, and an optional chocolate fondue dessert. Ruby Hwang Staff Writer Diamond Bar High Schools French Club held its annual meeting at The Melting Pot in Brea on Friday, October 23 from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Approximately 30 people attended the meeting. Its a really good chance to get together with all the other French Club people, stated junior Tiffany Babb, secretary of French Club. The meal was divided into three courses. The first course consisted of a cheese fondue served with vegetables. The club members then chose an entre of either meat or vegetables dipped in various fondue cooking styles, such as Coq a Vin, Mojo Style, Court Bouillon, and Bourguignonne. There was also the option of a chocolate fondue dessert. We ate amazing food. We dipped marshmallows in melted chocolate. We bonded. Who could ask for anything more? said Anthony Tietz, the French teacher and the French Club advisor. The purpose of this event was to expose DBHS students to the French culture during their first meeting. This is the third time I have gone to The Melting Pot with French Club, and it just keeps getting better, commented junior Shane Lee. As an annual tradition, French Club students gather at The Melting Pot for the first meeting of the school year. This custom began in 2007, when the restaurant first opened. The Melting Pot was chosen as the location because of its Frenchinspired theme. Any student interested in the club was allowed to attend the meeting. Students provided their own transportation and paid for their own meal. Proceeds from

Teachers took roll of their classes on rosters to make sure that all their students were present. The teachers then handed it to their designated areas Grade Level Coordinators, who then handed the rosters to Real, the coordinator of the drill. The entire drill took about 20 minutes to complete. After the drill, a bell sounded and students were led back to their classrooms. I think [the drill] went really smoothly. Everyone was cooperative. Everybody came down to the field and up to the front in an orderly fashion, commented Real. The disaster drill was originally planned to occur on the day of the Great California ShakeOut, an annual earthquake drill in which all schools in California would participate in on Thursday, October 15. However, it was postponed at DBHS because there was rain two days prior to the planned date. Since most people were evacuating to the field, we figured that it was going to be very muddy, slippery, and messy down there. We asked teachers to review their route with their students in lieu of the drill on that day, stated Real. She added, I felt like postponing [the drill] was a good idea, as long as the teachers took time to review the route with their students. As the Interim Assistant Principal, Real organized the drill with the help of DBHS Operations Manager, Eric Gossett. I have a couple of things I would like to change for next time; maybe tweak a couple of evacuation routes for some classes because we had some areas that were kind of bottle-necked. But other than that, [the drill] went very well, commented Real. There will be another evacuation drill in the spring to review what students and staff are expected to do in an actual evacuation. Instead of just an evacuation drill, we are going to try and do some simulations for [everyone] to be more involved, said Real, in regards to the upcoming spring evacuation drill.

Students and Staff Participate in Evacuation Drill

SHAKE: DBHS originally planned to have its annual evacuation drill on the date of the Great California ShakeOut, a drill in which California residents hold evacuation drills. Elizabeth Lee Asst. News Editor Diamond Bar High Schools evacuation drill was held on Thursday, October 22 during fourth period. The entire student body and campus staff participated in the drill. The purpose of the evacuation drill was mostly to review the route and the location where [students] would end up, explained Interim Assistant Principal Catherine Real. She added, If we did have a real emergency, people would just go onto auto pilot and go to [their designated areas]. Fire alarms sounded during fourth period to indicate the start of the drill. Students were led by their fourth period teachers through pre-assigned routes. Each fourth period class has a designated location on the upper athletic field or the front parking lot.

DBHS Student Places in Math Competition

HONOR: The Yau High School Mathematics Awards is a funded competition established to encourage high school students to work with research projects that incorporate math. Andrew John Asst. Sports Editor Junior Brandon Sim finished as a semifinalist at the Regional Presentation of the S.T. Yau High School Mathematics Awards competition. It was held at the San Gabriel Hilton Hotel on Saturday, October 17. Sim won $1000 as a semifinalist. He was one of thirteen selected high school students from around the world to present their research topic to a panel of judges at the Regional Presentation. I thought [the competition] would be pretty cool because in high school, we dont get the opportunity to do that kind of research, stated Sim. Sims paper on his research topic and his corresponding presentation were titled the Mathematical Modeling of Feedback Regulation in Multistage Cell Lineages. I wanted to use math in real-world situations [in which] I could help people. I dont like the theoretical stuff, commented Sim. For the competition, students had to submit a research paper on applied math, such as the application of math in other sciences. High school student worldwide interested in participating could enter the contest. Students had to notify the YHMA by June 30, then submit their research topic in a formal document by August 30. Judges from across the United States assessed the work of each of the 13 students who had shown the most proficiency and creativity in their mathematical and scientific research. The selected students then presented their research topic and paper in person in front of a panel of judges. The other students at the Regional Presentation were from around the world. Six students

Turkey Runs A Foul
Ruby Hwang Staff Writer Turkish television producers have recently sparked controversy with a series called Separation: Palestine in Love and War, which egregiously displays Israeli soldiers in a bad light. The show inappropriately depicts a group of Israeli soldiers shooting down children during a battle with Palestinian forces. With the current issues between Israel and the Middle East, such tension must be avoided. Not only does the show promote malice towards Israel, but it also jeopardizes the peaceful relationship between Israel and Turkey. The secular Muslim state of Turkey and the Jewish state of Israel have maintained a peaceful relationship for years, and with the instability in the Middle East at the moment, it would be unwise for Turkey to risk losing such a vital connection to the ultimate goal of peace. It is one matter to have legitimate conicts with another country; it is an entirely different issue when the conict can easily be resolved, except for one sides stubborn refusal to analyze the long term consequences of its actions. Israeli soldiers fought a bloody battle in the Gaza Strip earlier this year, still making it a sensitive topic. While Israels occupation was indeed controversial, including such material in the show is in extremely poor taste. A producer of the show stated that the soldiers were not meant to represent Israelis and that the uniforms were only similar in appearance, but there is no doubt that the depicted villains are in fact Israeli soldiers. Not only does the drama purposely single out Israeli soldiers as criminals, but it can even be said that some of the people in charge of the show are exploiting anti-Semitism to make a prot and increase ratings. Jewish Israel receives much hate from its neighboring countries and the portrayal of Israelis in such a negative way will likely make the show a notable prot from its anti-Semitic viewers. The Turkish Foreign Minister has rightly stated that the shows broadcasters ultimately have control over whether or not the show will stay on the air; otherwise, the situation would evolve into a matter of censorship. It is now the responsibility of the producers to bring a peaceful end to this unneeded dispute by either changing the script or cancelling the show altogether. It is understandable for Turkish ofcials to be on edge about the countries relationship, but in any case, Turkey should still work to maintain a stable connection with Israel. The producers are almost single-handedly souring an otherwise amicable relation. The matter of the television show itself has little signicance, but on top of the already unsteady political climate in the Middle East, it is part of the crucial issue of strengthening or weakening ties. Turkey is one of the few countries that have peaceful relations with Israel and to end that rapport could be fatal to both countries, and to any prospects of long-term peace in the Middle East. This issue is just one among a series of disputes between the countries of Israel and Turkey. Turkey has also excluded Israel from important North Atlantic Treaty Organization air training exercises this October, putting further strain on the two countries relationship. The producers refusal to fix the issue is irresponsible and ignorant. The presentation of the Israeli soldiers in such a manner is also harsh and very unnecessary. It would be best for the producers to resolve the problem peacefully while maintaining the close association with Israel. Turkey is simply not doing enough to keep its relationship with Israel strong in such uncertain times.

Op-Ed: School Suspension

CY Tan Contributing Staff Writer It is shocking to see how many educators still believe that denying a student an education is an appropriate way to educate. The practice of out-of-school suspension and its conditions of use have been simply absurd and are seriously detrimental to the educational and social condition of the distressed student. When educators mishandle this sort of suspension, it benets no one; it just authorizes schools to ignore students they simply do not want to deal with, amounting to a punishment that fails to achieve anything. Although students at Diamond Bar High School can enjoy the privilege of an alternative educationat Ron Hockwalt Academiesduring a prolonged period of suspension, for around four million students nationally, this is not an option. These students, when suspended, do not have the opportunity to attend an alternative school; they are denied their right to an education after the school irresponsibly labels them as lost causes. Unfortunately, about one in every 14 students must endure such an ineffective and unjust punishment. The high frequency of suspension at some schools demonstrates these schools frivolous use of the punishment, as they choose to suspend rather than to reeducate. Suspended students coming from economically and socially deprived families are not serve to remedy but rather to punish students. Out-of-school suspension pulls students further and further back in their studies until they can no longer catch up and are sometimes forced to drop out, when they will then participate in self-destructive and morally questionable behavior. In fact, almost 90 percent of 16 and 17-year olds involved in the juvenile justice system have been suspended or expelled from schools. When students are not in school, they are much more likely to get involved in physical fights or carry weapons, as reported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Although many believe that suspensions eliminate dangerous students from the school population and therefore create a safer learning environment, a majority of suspended students are usually penalized for small offenses such as frequent tardiness. It is unfair for these students to miss out on education because of technicalities rather than poor behavior. Such poor judgment of schools can be seen in the case of the Delaware rst grader who received a 45-day suspension for bringing eating utensils to school. Schools should consider a better approach to the situation such as Connecticuts new school discipline laws that require suspensions to be inschool-suspensions unless the offense is extremely disruptive and dangerous. This promotes a better approach as students are not unfairly treated for minor offenses that prevent them from engaging themselves in the educational process. The bottom line is that students have to be in school for schools to help them. It is unsettling how complacent the educational system has been with the harmful and overused suspension policy. Even though student behavior may constitute the need for punishment, suspension only pushes many students to make more bad choices or engage in counterproductive behavior. It is clearly senseless to take students out of school to teach them proper school behavior.

four times more likely to be afflicted with suspension and yet, are ironically most in need of an education. Students like these are suspended because they frequently come from underprivileged backgrounds. The demographic disparity in the occurrences of suspension reects the inefciency of the form of punishment, which does

Eye of the Editors

Reputation, which is calculated through merit and achievements, has become a measurement that an individual can use to estimate the value of a particular object or group; this school is judged in the same way. Diamond Bar High Schools reputation, which is shown through its public high school rank, is slowly rising to its once prestigious title, but this is just a faade that hides the true situation. DBHS has come a long way from when it was first built in 1982, and the school has now become renowned for its outstanding academic achievement. Its calculus program was ranked the best in the world in 2005 by College Board and DBHS ranked 183rd nationally as a public school that same year. However, the rank of the school has diminished gradually over the past few years because of the lowering of average scores. In 2008, DBHS ranked 284th nationally, which is based on the Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate scores of its graduating seniors divided by the schools number of graduates. This is six ranks higher than what it was in 2007, an increase nonetheless, but a far drop from where the school had once been. A small comeback is no reason to celebrate as it does not truly represent the changes the school has undergone. DBHS, like thousands of other public schools in the nation, seems to be facing extreme challenges, especially due to the economic crisis. The school has been required to make several changes and adopt new policies that have signicantly impacted the learning environment in negative ways. The school has removed conventional conveniences for students, such as the provision of school-printed worksheets, giving students extra, unnecessary work instead of supplying them with the opportunity to concentrate on their studies. The quality of the school has not improved and the educational experience has not become better. A small increase in school rank does not reect the schools situation. It is obvious that Diamond Bar High has dropped in quality, especially in light of the disturbing long run trends. Though DBHSs short-term rank is rising due to its students improving AP and IB scores, it can hardly be praised when the quality of the school is not improving. DBHS has been neglecting the educational experience of its students by failing to improve the quality of its learning environment. The school should work to promote a superior educational atmosphere, which can be achieved through a systematic, step-by-step improvement, starting with the schools quality. Students should not have to face the economys negative effects alone, and the school should, rather than sacricing the students educational experience, adjust to make learning easier. It is only then that the rising school rank can accurately reect an actual rise in quality.

The lower rank is a reality check because it means were slipping a little in our curriculum. Brandon Junus, Junior

Pro: UC Revenue Plan
Kevin Acciani Asst. Sports Editor The economy is currently in a dreadful state, and the State of California is no exception; one of the areas that is being hit the hardest is public universities. Because of the money problems the state is dealing with, colleges are not able to generate the same amount of money they need to meet their rising expenses. Colleges are taking innovative measures to try and fix their budget problems. For example, Cal State Universities are requiring that all teachers take ten day-long furloughs. What the University of California is deciding to do, however, is much more hotly debated. They are considering raising admission costs for those undergraduates who plan to major in engineering and business up to $900 more than the extra $2500 all students will have to pay. While opponents of this plan may say it is unfair to only raise costs for certain majors, this is a solid plan that will temporarily alleviate the hardships that the UC system is going through. There is a good reason for choosing those two specific majors to have an increase in fees. UC ofcials state that the two were chosen due to the high salaries of the required faculty members in those elds. The two undergraduate programs disproportionately cost the universities more, and it is only right that those specic students pay more too. Also, students who have graduated from the business and engineering programs tend to obtain higher-paying jobs soon after graduation; they will be more than able to pay for the small hike in the long run. UCs are not the only ones trying to selectively increase tuition on the basis of major. According to a study by the University of Wisconsin administration, about half of all major universities across the United States charge more for at least one undergraduate major. The policy has worked for other universities; it will undoubtedly work for the UCs too. Those who wish to maintain uniform tuitions are hanging on to an obsolete fee system which has proved ineffecient. So many schools are adopting the progressive policy because it is a solid, proven idea that works to appropriately cope with rising costs. Opponents of the plan say that engineering and business majors should not have to pay more than other students because it will then cause a decline in the number of students learning about the two subjects. While they are correct that the quantity of those students will be lowered, only those students fervently dedicated to the disciplines will continue to study. The professionals will be more successful in their chosen career, ensuring a dedicated and productive workforce in future years. Without good quality businessmen and engineers, the economy has little chance of improving. Unless something is done soon, the UC system will face an even more problematic budget crisis than the one it is going through currently. The only logical solution is to raise fees; but it is unfair to charge all students when only a select group of undergraduates are costing the university the most.

Con: UC Revenue Plan

Katie Lee Asst. Editorial Editor The poor condition of the state economy has caused the University of California administration to propose a plan to raise tuition for engineering and business undergraduate programs. This scheme is clearly discriminatory and will only aggravate the current economic situation. Although faculty members in engineering and business programs are paid slightly more than instructors in other majors, it is unfair to merely single out business and engineering students. If the proposed plan is approved, these students, who are already going to be aficted by the universal fee hikes of $2500, will be paying an additional $900 more a year to help pay for the rising costs of education. Not only is such a plan inequitable, it irrationally hinders professions that will be benecial to the economy in the long run. Every profession contributes to society in its own way; however, if the UCs continue to charge students more money based on their major, students will purposely choose certain majors over others because of affordability, not interest. If the controversial plan is approved, it would discourage people from engaging in professions that cost more yet contribute the most to the economy. After all, engineers supply the many goods needed for the advancement of the technological future and businessmen provide the employment and investment services needed to aid the economy. Engineering and business fees should, in fact, be subsidized to encourage high productivity and progress, not raised. R a t h e r, i t i s a m o r e reasonable option to charge graduate students because they are most likely to have that profession become their lifes occupation. Undergraduate students, on the other hand, are still unsure of their future and have only chosen their majors based on a particular interest and passion, nothing especially permanent. Raising revenue on these undergraduate programs directly and wrongly targets the

young and aspiring engineering and business students. In addition, engineering and business programs are not the only costly elds of study; other majors in the science field, such as chemistry and biology, require expensive lab equipment and pricey lab buildings in universities that also take their toll on the UC budget. By inequitably charging business and engineering majors more than other students, the UCs are not only discouraging higher productivity in the economy, but also making irrational and discriminatory decisions. There are alternatives in mitigating the education costs that do not interfere with undergraduates and their occupational decisions. The UCs should instead charge students that have stayed at the college longer than four years, extend faculty furloughs, and accept fewer students. Reprimanding undergraduates for their choice in occupation is erroneous and bound to weaken the economy in the long run as students begin to lean towards professions that are more affordable.

Lea Chang Contributing Staff Writer The American peoples true feelings about President Barack Obamas reception of the Nobel Peace Prize in early October became obvious when a CNN poll revealed that only a third of Americans approved of the Nobel Organizations choice. This unexpected outcome should have been a source of elation for many of Obamas supporters, but it was apparent that there were mixed feelings about these results. But this disapproval comes as no surprise, because Obama pales in comparison to many of the other Nobel Prize nominees. The other numerous individuals and organizations that were submitted as candidates have been working successfully for their causes for years, and have much to show for their diligence. Obama has obviously won this award for his promises rather than his performance. According to the Nobel Committee, Obama was awarded the prize for his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples. However, it is much too early to commend him so highly on his diplomatic skills. He has only been president for nine months, and these nine months have hardly been enough time for him to show the effects of these skills; the international community has not yet had the has been headlining newspapers all over the world for quite some time, and even now, he continues to be the center of the worlds attention, but his repute and his actions are not the same. The Organization claims to be impartial, but has no doubt been inuenced by Obamas celebrity status. So many other men and women have proven themselves worthy of the Nobel Peace Prize. The Nobel Organization could have chosen from over 200 other nominated individuals or organizations, yet it chose Obama. Even Obama himself admitted, I do not feel that I deserve to be in the company of so many of the transformative gures who have been honored by this prize. Other nominees, like Columbian politician Ingrid Betancourt, who was kidnapped and imprisoned for six years to be used as a political bargaining chip, but who still continues to speak as an anti-corruption activist, deserved the Peace Prize. Another more worthy recipient would have been the German organization SOS Kinderdorf International, which has been running care centers for children in third world countries like Sri Lanka for 60 years. These are the people and groups whose results have been seen and who have made tangible contributions to international peace and development. Obamas work has just started. It is clear that the world has not seen enough of Obama to make any judgment yet. He has not made any fatal mistakes, but he has obviously not worked any miracles either. It is apparent that such an esteemed award should have gone to another person who has demonstrated just how capable and deserving he is. Perhaps Obama will become that person during his service as president, but in order to do that, he needs more time than nine months in ofce. Obama simply does not deserve to be a Nobel Peace Prize winner just yet.

Five Steps to Instant Stardom

Marcel Boubion Staff Writer Have you ever wanted to become an instant celebrity? When you look in the mirror do you say to yourself, Ive got the face for the 9 oclock news? Are you done editing those photos of your sleeping uncle and claiming Bigfoot had made an unannounced visit? Well, you no longer need to deal with those useless, halfbaked schemes. No, this plan is designed to keep you out of trouble and in the spotlight. In fact, you can even have your entire family, even your wife, by your side for the ride to stardom. With the help of this program all of it can be done in ve easy steps. Step 1: First you need to build a full-scale weather balloon. Once the balloon is ready, it is time for the town to watch as you demonstrate your masterpiece. But, dont expect the media to be at your doorstep just yet, because its not the balloon that will have them begging for interviews... Step 2: When the balloon is accidentally set free, it is time to announce the main attraction: a tear-jerking search for the young boy who snuck onto the balloon. If you can, give your child a name that would make for the best headline, something like Cardinal perhaps. Step 3: After the story is out, it will be only minutes before you have every news station,

those acting classes to use and turn on the water works. The goal here is to get the whole town looking for your child: notify authorities, call friends, call family, call co-workers, call everyone, and tell them about your tragic story. The more sympathy you receive, the better your story will sell. Step 5: Congratulations! The hard part is over and now its time to embark on the fun part of our journey: hiding your kid. Because kids are so gullible, this should be the easiest part of our ve step program. The best way to go about this is to play a game with him, preferably something that ends with him in a box tightly stowed away in your attic. Once the weather balloon is ying and the town is looking for your child, its time to sit back and watch the parade. After a couple of hours, your son should realize the game is over; if he doesnt, well, then you have a better story to sell to the tabloids. And there you have it, your face on the 9 oclock news. How you carry yourself after this point is crucial. There will be numerous interviews and reporters will take every chance they get to turn the story around on you. When you are asked questions, your answers should be dramatic and heart-wrenching; take every opportunity you get to be grateful for your son and thank your citys nest. If, by chance, your child does speak on interviews, do not let him blow your cover. If this does happen you are going to have to make the audience feel sympathy for youmake your kid sick. If he is allergic to peanuts, give him peanutswhatever it takes to make him ill on live television. This will help distract the media from the truth. If you havent reached your desired level of fame at this point please repeat steps 1-5, preferably with another child. If you have only one child, borrow a neighbors. News Editor Iris Li Asst. Last night, I explored the depths of the ocean, watched a beautiful Hawaiian sunset while sitting amongst the clouds, and relived childhood memories from Korea. All this happened within the duration of seven hours. How could all this be possible? With lucid dreaming, practically anything is. Lucid dreaming is like having a regular dream; the only thing is, you have to realize that youre dreaming. Once you realize that you are in a dream, you can do whatever you want, including willing yourself to accomplish impossible tasks such as ying or walking through walls. When I rst heard of this, I thought it was too good to be true; the ability to do anything I want during a dream seemed unimaginable. After learning more about the topic, I discovered lucid dreaming is not something I could learn overnight, but something I would gradually have to teach myself through a lot of practice. There are many different techniques to mastering lucidity. Depending on each individual, some techniques may work better than others. Try some of these methods to see which is best for you, and who knows? Maybe youll be able to y to Mars, meet your favorite actor, and ride the back of a dolphin in the middle of the Pacic Ocean all in one night. The best way to maintain control over your dream is to simply remind yourself of that. Icky Picky Habits

The crunchy texture of a scab savored until the last bite; the satisfying spurt of puss as a pimple erupts between two ngers; and the exhilarating feeling experienced after having an intense poop talk. Who would ever do such a thing? Kids? Thats expected. Teenagers? Maybe. Adults? Now thats just gross. You would think that everyone would nally realize how disgusting these actions are and would give them up. Well, be prepared to be proven wrong. Along with these repulsive habits, handfuls of others are being performed as we speak not just by kids but by adults as well. The scab eater performs one of the most spine-chilling tasks that plague the people that inhabit this earth. As nasty as this sounds, there is a simple explanation behind this habit. The acts of scab picking and eating scabs are usually associated with high anxiety, depression, and eating disorders. Giving their idle hands a thing to do, those with these disorders alleviate their stress. On the other hand, there are those who pick at their scabs just for the heck of it. Do not fear: those who pick scabs for fun are completely normal and you should not freak out and send people to the mental asylum if you see them tearing off dead skin. Next on the list is the pimple popper. The act of squeezing puss out of a pimple is often described as a victorious accomplishment that leaves a person feeling good for that cute boy in math class. This habit is not the most noticeable symptom of OCD, but certainly a common one. Although it sounds pretty disgusting, there are actually many people in the world who talk about their bodily functions. Its normal, and we have experienced it ourselves, but, when a person starts to obsessively talk about it, a gross habit is formed. Whether its just an odd fascination with bodily waste or a lack of propriety, people continue to take part in the discussion of this nauseating topic. There is no disease linked to this habit except maybe a social one. If people accept you, poop talk and all, more power to you. These rituals send chills up the spines of many, and inevitably set off gag reexes. The nasty habits of everyday people are sometimes just too much to handle. What may be normal to you can be the complete opposite to someone else. With that in mind, if you are a scab eater, pimple popper, or poop talker, please do us all a favor and keep your habits to yourself.

Music

To the older generation that experienced the youthful atmosphere of the 1970s, the name Randy Newman brings to mind classic songs such as I Love L.A. and Small People that played with both satire and melody. Even to todays young generation, Newmans unmistakable voice is well-known in the entertainment industry, especially with Newmans success in movies, particularly Disney-Pixar movies such as Toy Story, for which he wrote the popular song, Youve Got a Friend in Me. Yet despite his growing age, Newman, who is currently 66 years old, continues to remain publicly active with music, having just released his newest album, Harps and

Angels. Although Newman is now praised for his musical talent, his musical career started off slowly. Eventually, Newman was praised for his characteristic satirizing of political and social issues in his songs. However, Newmans numerous albums never sold exceptionally well. So Newman tried his hand at music in movies. Over his career in composing musical pieces for movies, Newman has received 17 Oscar nominations, five Grammy Awards, and 13 Grammy nominations for various original works. He also received an Academy Award in 2001 for his If I Didnt Have You in the movie Monsters, Inc. Most recently, he won a Grammy Award for Our Town from the movie Cars. In his newest album, Harps and Angels, Newman returns to his old habits of incorporating satirical commentary on current issues and also plays with a mixture of blues, jazz, and pop. Newman also features a full orchestra in several songs in this album. It comes as no surprise that this album has received impressive reviews for its humor and excellent composition. their favorite games on a giant 3.18 inch screen. This is made possible by the slide screen upgrade from the PSP. Unlike the PSP, the PSP Go has a screen that slides up and down, which is both useful and visually appealing. It has reduced the size by a substantial 43 percent. What is even more appealing is the ability to use the worldwide PlayStation network, where PSP Go users can download over 225 full game titles, TV shows, movies, and more. Instead of carrying around the cartridges of DS games, which are easily lost, gamers can download and play their favorite games instantaneously. Additionally, the one big advantage of the PSP Go to the DSi Lite, is the crisp, clean graphics, which have also been upgraded from the PSP. The realistic graphics allow PSP Go gamers to experience gaming at its best, compared to the lower quality graphics of the DSi Lite. So what do you think? Dang Yankees
Ryan DeVore Sports Editor For all sports fans, it is a natural phenomenon that few can explainan innocent transformation of hatred into an unwavering passion. The distaste for an opposing teams performance has been transformed into an art, and though such hate tends to be very emotional, it is often based on a sound basis. Many concrete reasons can be found to reasonably justify such opposition. A prime example of this can be found with the New York Yankees, who are one of the most disliked franchises in all of sports. The distaste of their universally known emblem is undoubtedly deserved for a multitude of reasons. The rst thing that pops into a fans mind when he or she sees the New York logo is money. It seems as if half of the breaking news on Sports Center covers the possibility of a trade involving the Yankees. With a reputation for paying tremendous sums of money for many of their players, money does not seem to be an issue for this team. It was only last year that the Los Angeles Angels offered over $100 million for the bigbat of Mark Teixeira, only to be beat by a few more million dollars offered by the greedy men in the Bronx. Shortly thereafter, the Yankees were able to acquire the left-handed ace C.C. Sabathia by simply offering more money than any other team. From their excessive spending, it would be pretty difcult for the Yankees not to make it to the playoffs every year. So to everyones dismay, we get to see the Bronx Bombers almost every October in the postseason. This is the prime time for the hatred of the Yankees, as baseball fans see the hundreds of millions of dollars at work. The Yankees have, in this way, strengthened their chances against any team they face. It seems as though every team is struggling from budget constraints during these tough economic times except, of course, the Yankees. While the Yankees pave their way for success each and every year, the one aspect that annoys most people is the excessive commercialization that surrounds the team. The advertising world, along with the media, is transxed by each players model-like appearance. No one seems to notice that once a player leaves the team, such as Jason Giambi, that players advertisements and precious television commercials cease to exist. That NY logo is enough to turn the media upside down in excitement, as players constantly steal the spotlight in magazines and commercials. At the end of the day, the New York Yankees have the highest salary rate compared to any other team. With a wallet lled with nothing but blank checks, the team has made it once again to the World Series this year. While some express sympathy and understanding for the motives of one of the most successful franchises, many people across the nation, however, will agree that the Yankees deserve to be hated as they continue to steal the spotlight in the media and buy their way into the postseason.

The Real Heroes

Ruby Hwang Staff Writer Emily Miller is a hardworking and well-rounded student at Diamond Bar High School. In addition to her academic achievements, Miller is the captain of the girls varsity tennis team. Miller began playing tennis at DBHS her freshman year. She was previously the top player on the junior varsity squad and has been on the varsity team since her sophomore year. As a senior, she was voted captain of the team. Kevin Acciani Asst. Sports Editor The face of a football team is usually a quarterback or a running back. For example, the most well-known player on the New England Patriots is Tom Brady. But where would Brady be if he did not have a good offensive line to protect him? Nowhere. Despite the common belief that quarterbacks and running backs are the heroes, the offensive line is more important to a football team than anything else because with even one weak spot on the line, a defender can rush through and stop the play. Yet, it seems that not enough people give lineman the credit they deserve. Every non-lineman should thank the big hogs up front for everything they do. They are possibly the hardest working players on the eld, often spending extra time after practice to make sure they are game-ready. Despite their diligent preparation, it appears as if the only time they are ever noticed is when they mess up. Dwight Freeney, the star defensive end for the Indianapolis Colts, gets paid millions of dollars a year to get a couple sacks a game, at most. Although not many people

will realize it, even a mediocre offensive lineman will beat Freeney on nearly every play of the game. However, if Freeney gets a single sack, people will unfairly criticize the offensive player. In 2007, the Patriots nearly nish undefeated. The reason they were able to be so successful is that Brady was able to play to the best of his ability because of his rock-solid line giving him so much time in the pocket, allowing him to be able to nd his receivers as soon as they got open. Linemen do not only help in the passing game, but are furthermore the key to a good rushing attack. Without a good surge from the line, not even the most talented running back can go anywhere. At least those who truly understand football agree how important offensive linemen are to a teams success. The secondhighest paid position in the National Football league is left tackle, behind only quarterback, and the other line spots are not far behind. Linemen deserve to be paid at least as much as other skilled positions; the line is what makes a whole offense work. Most football analysts agree that the game is won on the line.

Brahmas Remain Undefeated

Megan Quiamas Staff Writer The girls varsity tennis team defeated St. Lucy on Thursday, October 29. Battling through cold weather and injury, the Brahmas only lost ve matches out of 18, and remain undefeated. [Last Thursdays] match was really tough, said coach Tisa Shavers. Both [the Brahmas and St. Lucys] teams improved extremely, plus we minimized our errors and did not give up many points. The Brahmas started off roughly, only winning two out of the rst four games and losing all their doubles matches. In the rst match, freshman Melody Chen defeated her rst opponent 6-0, while junior Monika Kozan won decisively 6-1. [The team] had a rough start, but we became more focused and relaxed, commented senior captain Emily Miller. Although senior Ashley Chang fell and scraped her knee, she still managed to win her doubles match. Kozan too defeated all her opponents, even though she was not feeling well. I wanted to help the team win against our rivals, and not watch them play on the sidelines, stated Kozan. The Brahmas continued to excel in the second and third round. At the end of the second round, they lost only one doubles match, winning 5-1. Melody Chen bageled all of her matches. The doubles team of senior captain Jennifer Liu and freshman Joycelyn Chen also won 6-1. All the freshmen are starters, they are very instrumental for the team, commented Coach Shavers. Finished with league, the team will be competing in the California Interscholastic Federation playoffs. The whole season we have been preparing for CIF, commented Liu. I believe that we are ready. League Preliminary started Tuesday, November 3, at Claremont Tennis Center. The Brahmas have an enormous amount of talent and potential to become CIF champions.

Team Qualifies for CIF

Christine Song Staff Writer After emerging from the Montview League playoffs as the undefeated team, the Diamond Bar girls golf team dominated the top players from other schools at the League individual competition. The tournament took place at the 27-hole Marshall Canyon Golf Course on Monday, October 26 and Tuesday, October 27. Six girls senior Siobhan Nasby, junior Maggie Yang, sophomore Carly Simpson, and freshmen Isabelle Shee, Charlotte Widjaja, and Kristie Yangall ranked within the top seven spots in the league. Kristie Yang led the Brahmas with a score of 126, followed by Maggie Yang with 128; however, first place went to a golfer from Gabrielino High School. There was a four-way tie for fourth place between Nasby, Shee, Simpson, and Widjaja, who all scored 132. The girls had a subsequent playoff to decide who would head off to the California Interscholastic Federation Individuals. Simpson prevailed, moving Nasby, Shee, and Widjaja down to fifth place. All six Lady Brahmas received the honor of First Team All League, and Kristie Yang, Maggie Yang, and Simpson will attend the CIF individuals at Soule Park Golf Course in Ojai, California. Going to CIF individuals is a great honor and I am proud of my students, stated head coach Tony McCabe. Maggie Yang stated, [The tournament] seemed like practice for the CIF individuals, as her sister, Kristie Yang, added, We just focused on the game and didnt let anything get to us. McCabe, when asked why the team did so well, responded, We are so much tougher, we are so much deeper, and we have [better] team effort than the other teams out there; it provides competition for the girls to really work hard. Although the girls excelled at the Individuals, they all shot average scores. McCabe is expecting them to do better in the next tournament. With their undefeated season on the line, the Lady Brahmas are confidently looking forward to their next game at the Northern Team Divisionals at Cypress Ridge Golf Course in Arroyo Grande, as they look to capture another victory.

Cross Country Runs Hard Before Finals

Andrew John Asst. Sports Writer The Diamond Bar High School varsity cross country team recently competed at the annual Jaguar Invitational at Kit Carson Park on Friday, October 23. The team runs this race in Escondido every year as a strong workout before league finals. The boys ran well, considering the courses high level of difficulty. Sophomore James McCreary led the DBHS varsity boys with a time of 17:24. Fellow sophomore James Powell came in a few moments later at 17:59, with junior Alexander H a r v e y following closely behind at 18:23. Senior David Donner, who had just recovered from the flu a few days before the race, pushed himself throughout the run and finished at 18:52. Freshman Zachary Unger came in next at 19:07, and senior Roger Huang wrapped it up for the Brahma boys with a time of 19:44. The boys had to actually run five kilometers, or about 3.1 miles, instead of the usual three miles. [The boys] probably werent pleased by their times, but a lot of them ran faster, on average, by a minute than the year before, commented head coach Brian Wiencek. The varsity girls ran a solid race as well. Unlike the boys, who had to run a longer distance than normal, the girls actually ran 2.6 miles instead of the standard three miles. Freshman Kelly Kuo finished first out of the Diamond Bar girls, with a time of 17:20. Freshman Casey Lam came in second at 19:42. Sophomore Katie Jagodka finished third, at 19:59, with junior Ashley Torres finishing fourth at 20:53. Freshman Annemarie Branks finished the day for the team with a time of 20:58. Since this race was an invitational, both the girls and boys ran individually, so their places were not scored together, as they are in league meets. The course at Kit Carson Park is well-known to runners for being challenging. It features many of the obstacles that generally slow runners down, including hills, sharp turns, and narrow paths. At first glance, [the course] seems easier than [Mount San Antonio College]. But even though we were putting in the same amount of effort, we still went slower, stated McCreary. The team looked at the Jaguar Invitational race as a final workout in preparation for league finals, which were approaching quickly. Diamond Bar is hopeful that it will do much better this year than in previous years. I think everyone is primed and ready to go. I think we will do well at league finals, said Wiencek. For girls, the goal is to get fourth. For guys, the goal is to get third. Theyll have to work their hardest to achieve those goals, but [those goals] are reachable. By placing third or higher at league finals, a team qualifies for the California Interscholastic Federation playoffs. The Diamond Bar boys are hopeful that they will make it to CIF this year. Last year, the Brahma boys were incredibly close to qualifying, but they placed fourth behind Chino Hills and missed out on the chance to compete in CIF by a slim margin of only a few points. The entire team competed at league finals yesterday, November 3, at Bonelli Park.

I think everyone is primed and ready to go. I think we will do well at league finals.
