Assignment EEN1046 Electronic III (Trimester 3 2012/2013) Operational Amplifier Design

This project assignment contributes 15% to your total course work marks (40 marks). Important Note 1) The purpose of this assignment is to train you to do some simple circuit designs. The circuits that you are required to design must be able to be implemented using off the shelf components. You will then test the circuit performance using the Multisim simulator. Electronic circuit design is an important skill for an electronic engineer. 2) In the design problem, there can be more than one answer. As long as you can show that your calculation answer matches the simulation result and the performance of the circuit meets the stated requirement with reasonable accuracy, your work can be accepted. 3) Use the free Multisim spice simulator. The free Multisim spice simulator can be downloaded here http://www.analog.com/en/design-tools/dtmultisim-spice-program-download/design-center/index.html . You need to choose op-amp component produced by Analog Devices such as OP470AY and AD8671AR. You must use practical value for the capacitors and resistors in order to implement the circuit using components sourced from suppliers such as Analog Devices, RS or Farnell. Multisim is an easy to use spice simulator and the free version comes with spice model from Analog Devices and the basic components. There are many tutorials on how to use Multisim on the Internet, here are some simple ones http://www.g9toengineering.com/thewellroundedengineer/MultiSimtutorial %201.pdf http://www.g9toengineering.com/thewellroundedengineer/MultiSimtutorial2.p df 4) The report should contain section such as Introduction, Literature Review, Hands-On Calculation, Simulation, Conclusion and References. Please refer to the Marking Scheme on the cover-page template (last page of this doc). Please do not attach components datasheet. 5) You should answer all the questions posed in this assignment. Underline the final answer of each calculation. Discuss your results in HandCalculation section and Simulation section in your report. 6) All answer must be type-written. All graphs and schematics should be obtained from the Multisim simulator and inserted into the report (hardcopy). 7) Use the given cover-page template (last page of this doc) as cover page. Please indicate clearly each group member IDs, names, degree majoring, lecture section (EC301 or EC302) on the cover page of your report with your name indicated at first place. 8) Please also submit the softcopy of your report together with the Multisim circuit files in CD (One CD per group). The softcopy of the reports will be used by lecturers for copy (plagiarism) detection, using software such

as http://www.scanmyessay.com/features.php, and Turn-it-in. These are used to detect the similarity between the reports from different groups. Please do not allow your reports in your group to be copied by other groups as the software would not be able to differentiate the original one and the copied version. Please write your ID numbers and full names on the CD (One CD per group). Your report will not be graded if you do not submit the softcopy. 9) This is a group assignment project (Four students form one group). However, each group member has to submit individual assignment report. Any group who copies the work from other group shall be severely penalized. The assignment marks (15%) will be forfeited in case plagiarism is found in your reports. In case of similar work and original work cannot be identified, mark will be forfeited for both groups. 10) The due date for the assignment is by friday of week-5 [12 April 2013] of the trimester III. No late submission is allowed !! The total marks deducted for late submission will be 2 marks multiplied with the number of days after the due date. Please use the given report cover-page template on last page of this doc. Please submit the typed written hardcopy report and CD to Dr. Balachandran Ruthramurthy in his office, and sign on the submission list. This is a group assignment, with 4 students (can be from different degree majoring) to form a group to attempt the assignment. All group members need to submit each individual report (Group assignment, individual report). Group members should submit their individual reports together to Dr. Balachandran so that the individual assignment scripts from the same group will not be subjected to plagiarism check. 11) There are 2 design questions. Please do not wait till last minute to complete the assignment. Question 1 Design two op-amp circuits that provide the voltage gain of -1/2 and +2. i) ii) iii) iv) Circuit schematics should show the complete circuit and its resistor value. Plot showing input and output voltage of your circuit. Assume sinusoidal input signal with peak to peak voltage of 10 V, Vcc = |VEE| = 15V. Explain the circuit operation and show all calculation steps. List all components used together with its product code and price. Information on practical components should be obtained from Analog Devices, Farnell or RS website.

Question 2 Design two op-amp systems that perform the following arithmetic operations. 1) Vo = -(2V1 + V2 + 0.5V3) 2) Vo = 2(V1 - V2) i) Circuit schematics should show the complete circuit and its resistor value.

ii) iii) iv)

Plot showing input and output voltage of your circuit. Assume sinusoidal input signal with peak to peak voltage of 2 V, VCC = |VEE| = 15V. Explain the circuit operation and show all calculation steps. List all components used together with its product code and price. Information on practical components should be obtained from Analog Devices, Farnell or RS website.

Notes: Minimum number of components should be used in your designs. References 1) R. Mancini, Op-amp For Everyone Design Guide, Texas Instrument. http://focus.ti.com/lit/an/slod006b/slod006b.pdf 2) Thomas Floyd; Electronic Devices, Prentice Hall.
