NARRATIVE ESSAY

CALVIN AND HOBBES


Calvin is a boy, and he is very afraid of ghost and monsters .Every night, before he goes to bed, Calvin will check under his bed and dresser for any monsters. To overcome his fear, Calvin sleeps with his pet which named as Hobbes. One night, like every night, Calvin asked his father to check under his bed and dresser for any monster. To satisfy him, his father looked under his bed and told Calvin that there are no monsters under the bed, but he didnt check the dresser. So Calvin was certain that if there is a monster, it will be in the dresser. As soon as his father left, Calvin and Hobbes planned a trap for the monsters. He asked Hobbes to sound the horn to drive the monster out from their hideout, so that he can shoot them with the dart gun. As planned Hobbes sound the horn, and they heard something is coming towards them. Suddenly, the door was opened and Calvin saw a monster coming from the hallway. Then, he shoots the monster repeatedly with his dart gun. The monster immediately closed the door to repel the attack. Calvin thought that he had shot and wounded a monster, but actually he has shot his own father. (214 words)

INDIVIDUAL REFLECTION
NAME: IZZAH NABILAH BT ABDULLAH English for Language Teachers (ELE3103) is a course to reinforce learners language competency in understanding sounds, words formation and sentence structure. This course exposes learners to various strategies to further develop their mastery of the language skills. There are three main tasks that need to be done by all learners in order to complete this course. The tasks are done in groups of three or four. All the three tasks are mainly about words formation and sentence structure. The first task is for knowledge acquisition. Learners are needed to gather information sourced from internet regarding Language and Culture and present them in the form of graphic organizer. By reading the articles on Language and Culture, I had learned more about the relationships between these two. Besides that, I also be able to compare the features of language and communication when I read, analyze and simplify the articles. The second and third task is for knowledge mastery. The learners need to analyze the linguistics such as phonology, morphology and syntax by using speech bubbles and to write a narrative essay one of the comic strips. Through this project, I am able to analyse the different types of morpheme and word formation process. By drawing the tree diagrams, I got to master my skills in analyzing sentences in relation to their word order and the group of words they contain. To add more, I also able to apply my writing skills in writing a narrative essay which I had learned in the school through this project.

In conclusion, this project is about Language and Culture, word formation and sentence structure. This task helps me to enhance my knowledge and also strengthen my previous knowledge. I hope that this new knowledge can be used when I become a teacher one day. All in all, this projects helps me in improving my English Language skills especially in the area of word formation process and sentence structure.

REFLECTION NAME CLASS : NURUL AMIRA BINTI RIDZUAN : T3 SN1

For ELE 3101 English For Language Teachers project, it is about the analysis of language used in different text types. This project which consists of three different tasks actually can help the students to improve their English Language skills through a better understanding of words formation and construction of sentences in the English Language. From my reading of the articles, I got to understand better about Language and Culture and the relationship among them. Moreover, I can improve my skills of simplifying the text and transfer the important points into the graphic organizers. As the result, I can understand the gist of the topic in a more simple way. Besides that, I got to know that I am actually quite familiar with morphology semantics and syntax based on my previous knowledge. It is just that I am not too exposed to the terms and the rules of those topics before. From the project, now I realized the words formation and how words are used in the comic strips and all the reading materials available out there. I had also learned how to illustrate the sentences using a tree diagram technique which had helped me a lot to understand the word formation process. While doing this project, I have detected some of my weaknesses in using English Language. For instance, it is sometime difficult for me to differentiate between derivational and inflectional morphemes. It is also hard for me to separate the sentences and words according to their word-order and the groups of words they belong

to as I think that all of them are almost the same. This is because I am not too familiar with these new things. Lastly, this project is very helpful and meaningful in order for me to improve my skills so that I can appreciate the beauty of English Language more.

Praise to God, finally my group members and I managed to finish all the tasks successfully for the ELE3103 course. From the task, I learnt many new things and also improve my previous knowledge which is I already forgotten. Here, I can identify the strengths from doing these tasks. First of all, from this task, I am able to explore the issue of how sentences are formed. Although I have learnt it theoretically during class, I was confused if I want to apply the knowledge with other sources which have more complex sentences. I also knew how words are used in comic strips. I am realized that the language used in comic strips was very different with formal language that we had used in the class. So, I learnt how to analyse each of the sentences in the comic strips with my friends help. I am very grateful that all my friends are giving full cooperation during completing these tasks. We had many times discussion to discuss about it and we also share our knowledge together. Here, I am really improving my knowledge of English morphology and syntax through analyzing the structure and patterns of short narrative texts in the speech bubbles found in comic strips.

Last but not least, I also learnt how to construct tree diagrams which is involve different kinds of sentences structure and it was quite difficult as the sentences are a little bit different from what I have learnt during class. Although I have found the strengths of these tasks, I also identified some of my weaknesses. Firstly, I felt difficult to make relationship between Language and culture. Even they are related to each other, but I am having hard time to understand what make they are related to each other. Besides, I was feeling hard to identify the minimal pairs in the comic strips because they have lack of words and they did not use many words to tell the story. The pictures were always to be the narrator for the readers. Then, I also have confusing to identify the derivational and inflectional morphemes from the comic strips. However, after refer to references, me and my friends able to find the examples of derivational and inflectional morpheme. Although it was not so many, but we hope that our answers are right. Last but not least, I am facing difficulties when we want to transform the comic strips to a narrative essay. But, after analyse and discuss with friends I tried to arrange the words in the correct patterns without changing the meaning of real story. In conclusion, this course was really helped me to improve my English language skills.

After having the English class with Madam Rohaya bt Abdullan for one semester for ELE 3103 subject, there are many aspects of English that I now comprehend. My performance in class was moderate in the beginning, but then as the semester progressed I became more focused.

For this semester, there is a project task that must be done regarding to the few tasks given. In groups of four, we need to gather information on language and culture and present them in the form of graphic organiser. After spend most of my time gathered all the articles about this topic, I can understand more about the language and culture. I can clearly know the relationship between those by doing some graphic organiser. I think now I know about this topic more than before.

On the other hand, I also improved my knowledge about linguistics. We must choose suitable comic strips and analyse each of their speech bubbles. By doing this task I learnt how to identify the minimal pairs, derivational and inflectional morphemes and syntax from the comic strips. However it is not easy to find the examples for each in the comic strips. My friend and I spent most of our time to find the suitable comic strips before we can analyse the sentences.

Besides, we need to rewrite one of the selected comic strips used into a narrative essay. From this task, we need to use the correct word and the suitable storyline . We

are facing some problem because it is not easy to make an essay from the speech bubbles which most of the words are short and simple. My friend and I read the comic strip for few times until we get the precise word for the narrative essay without changing the real story.

On top of that, I really thankful to my beloved friend for their kindness and support in order for me to finish up all this taks. As conclusion, I have learned and gained many information and new experiences from this project task. I really

appreciate all the help Madam Rohaya has given me over the semester. I think that I have improved as well.
