This past week vandals hit 14 cabins along Crowfoot Crescent, in the Hidden Valley Golf Resort. There are 305 cabins in the area. There is security at the front gate, however, culprits entered from the back of the resort and smashed their way into cabins, breaking and overturning belongings inside. They took the barbeque, turned it sideways and slammed it into the two glass doors and shattered the doors, said Earl Best, about the damage done to his cabin. We have a bed upstairs that looks like it might have been slept in, so it might have happened over several days. Best was thankful that his grandmothers 100-year-old dish collection remained untouched. Many of the cabin owners have been residents for over 10 years and the Best family has been there for four years. They estimate their cabin is worth over $150,000, excluding fees paid, insurance and other costs. The cabin owners pay approximately $250,000 per year on the land lease and $4,325 per year in maintenance fees. The Golf resort generates about $400,000 income for the reserve and supplies many employment opportunities for Siksika residents. The Bests said that the cabin owners really appreciate the opportunity Siksika has given them to share the beauty, of the site and Best and his wife Coleen think it is a hidden treasure of Alberta. They are disappointed something like this happened, and said there has never been a destructive incident like this before. There have been the occasional break-ins in the past, where petty theft was the focus. This time, the Bests said there didnt seem to be anything stolen. Cabin owners have had to deal with the destruction from flooding in the area over the years, and worked together to build a berm to help prevent water inundation. We havent had anything that has been this vicious and destructive, said Resort Manager Dick Burgess. Eight units were terribly trashed. They broke tables, chairs and mirrors on the walls. The cabin owners are devastated and want to know why they did this. Burgess said there were 24-7, 365-days-of-theyear security measures in place and is unsure how the vandals were not detected. The area is screened by trees, so that may have been a contributing factor. Management has added extra security measures because of the incident. Burgess said that cabin owners should contact their insurance companies and police have authorized owners to come in and begin clean up. Continued on Page 1

Rural homelessness
Sharon McLeay Times Contributor Pastor Dawn Nelson at the Lord of All Lutheran Church said her work with people in the Strathmore community tells her there is a rural homelessness problem. The need is high. Not enough facilities are available. We definitely need more supportive housing, Nelson said. She has dealt with about 25 to 30 cases of homelessness a year. They are comprised of individuals, couples or families with housing and food issues. Sometimes individuals are just passing through town, and vouchers are supplied for a meal, a hotel room, gas or cab fare, taking them back to Calgary. With the rising costs associated with maintaining housing, she knows of people who have made the choice to live on the street, one or two sleeping in dumpsters, or their vehicles. She said sometimes there are health or psychiatric issues. We cant force them into care unless they are a danger to themselves or others. They have given up, are tired of struggling, or just dont have any selfworth left. Churches contribute the best that we can, said Nelson, who often gets referrals by church members. We try to be out there. Right now, if there is a need, we will rise to meet it. She said the Lutheran church has a school mitten program and they support and work with the Food Bank. They also host a Christmas Turkey Dinner. Nelson said that each church in Strathmore has outreach programs that deal with similar issues. Nelson said there are agencies in town to help with housing, but often they have waiting lists. People with core incomes less than provincially set guidelines can apply to Wheatland Housing for rent subsidy, under the Community and Seniors Self Contained Housing, Direct Rent Subsidy and Private Landlord Subsidy programs. Applications are downloaded from the website www.wheatlandhousing.com, or picked up at Wheatland lodge. Rents are based on 30 per cent of total household income. There is always a demand and a waiting list for community housing. Right now there are no vacancies and three families are on the waitlist and I am receiving more applications daily. There are seven seniors on the waitlist for various areas, said Tracy Kemp, Wheatland Housing Management Manager. Homeless situations due to family violence are covered for the short term by the Wheatland Community Crisis Shelter. See www.wheatland.albertashelters.com Pastor Nelson would like to see all the programs offered by area churches or agencies coordinated. She thinks there may be gaps that people are falling through, in their search for a roof over their heads, a warm safe space and nourishing meals for themselves and their families. Both Strathmore and Wheatland FCSS coordinators are gathering information from the community about whether there is a need and how to address it. The Alberta Rural Development Network (ARDN) is also hoping to solve the issue by offering a total of $424,625 towards homelessness programs. ARDN believes that rural and remote Albertans at risk of homelessness face unique issues that require unique solutions, says Dee Ann Benard, Executive Director of ARDN. Its our goal to engage these at-risk rural Albertans and provide them appropriate supports so they do not become or remain homeless.

Who can drive your car?

RCMP investigates vandalism

Continued from Page 1 Gleichen RCMP is running an ongoing investigation into the incident and has collected forensic evidence that has been sent away for analysis. Two officers have been assigned to the case. They are asking the public if they have any information to call the Gleichen RCMP detachment at 403-734-3056 (daytime), or 403 734-3923 (after hours), or if they want to remain anonymous to call Crime Stoppers 1-800-222-TIPS (8477). Chief Fred Rabbit Carrier of the Siksika Nation said he was waiting for police to conduct their investigation. The Siksika Council has not met to discuss the issue as yet, but Chief Rabbit Carrier was very discouraged that such actions could happen at Hidden Valley. Chairman of the Cottage Association Negotiating Committee Andrew Bear Robe, sent a letter to Siksika Chief Fred Rabbit Carrier and Council indicating they would like to talk about security measures, as Siksika Nation leases the area to the cottage owners. You are our landlord and we are your tenants and we want to know what best protective measures can be taken at this time against such violent acts by those responsible? The landlord has a contractual and fiduciary duty to protect its tenants from actual or perceived harm, including the B&Es that occurred this week, said Bear Robe in his letter. The Siksika Nation recently voted not to renew a designation for the Hidden Valley Golf Resort (HVGR) on the Siksika Reserve. Reserve land is currently owned by the Crown and held for First Nation Peoples use, a much contested premise by First Nations Peoples. Under the Indian Act, land can be designated for purposes such as the HVGR, by a vote from the First Nation tribal members. Stephen Harper proposed in 2012 to provide private ownership of land on the Reserves to First Nations individuals.

Childrens choir home performance

The Strathmore Childrens Choir took part in the Drumheller and District Music Festival on March 14. The festival is a part of the Alberta Music Festival Association and choirs from the district attend each year to showcase their skills. After the Festival the Strathmore Childrens Choir held a small celebration dinner and mini performance in the evening at the Strathmore High School. The Childrens choir consists of three different age groups, Bravo (K-Grade 1), Encore (Grade 2-5) and Finale (Grade 6 and up). Each group performed two songs at the festival and all groups took home first place in their category. The once small choir is growing quickly and has a membership of 50 children. The music students look forward to attending the festival every year not only to participate but to get new, fun and innovative ideas for future performances, explains music director for the choir Loralee Laycock. The entire Childrens Choir singing a song they all agree to be the funniest to perform, entitled Banana.

StreetSense teaches defense in any situation

Shannon LeClair Times Reporter On March 23 Kerry Sauve, director of StreetSense Safety and Security Inc, was in Strathmore teaching women how to defend themselves in the case of an attack. StreetSense Padded Assailant workshop was held at the Youth Club Centre from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Sharon Herr and her daughter Shari Bishop were just two of the participants who signed up for the course. First of all Im 67, and I havent taken anything like that in years so I thought in this day and age its probably something that every woman needs, said Herr. Basically the whole thing was about not fighting, but protecting yourself, having the advantage if you ever are attacked. I think it was something every parent with especially teenage girls should take. Sauve showed two teen girls that were there how to get out of a restraint when a guy might grab their arm at a dance, or school, without it being a big scene. Herr said Sauve really focused on making sure the women at the course fully learned a couple of different techniques before moving on to teach a new one. Its not about going fisticuffs on the guy, its getting in close and maiming them basically so that youve got the 30 seconds to get away. He also said it was really important to make a lot of noise so that people could hear you and that often that also scares the offender off, said Herr. Another example of what Sauve taught the women was if an attacker just says give me your purse, you should give it to them, nothing in it is worth your life to fight for. Dont just hand it to him, throw it so it distracts him. If you throw it past him it distracts him while he goes to pick up your purse, if he didnt really want your purse then that wont distract him and youve got to know youre going to be in trouble then cause he wants you to. It really was about being smart in the street, the kind of things you might expect to happen and we will have the element of surprise on our side, said Herr. Program Coordinator for the Youth Club of Strathmore Colina Clark believes that if something can enhance the quality of life, it is worth it. This program exceeded my expectations as the Coordinator and as a participant, it was phenomenal. The defensive techniques learnt were natural, said Clark. Having the opportunity, within a controlled environment, of being in realistic situations to practice the techniques was invaluable and encouraging. Knowledge is power, situational awareness is key. Clark said the program received a lot of positive feedback and she is looking forward to personally take the self-defense program again, and others that the Sauve and StreetSense have to offer. She would like to offer another Padded Assailant course in June if there is enough interest.

NATIONAL HEALTH & FITNESS DAY

The remains of an animal has been discovered and it is up to you and your team to identify who the victim is and who did it! Full of information from witnesses to the clues, you team must unravel the mystery before the competing team does! This is a fast paced, fun filled logistical challenge where your team must use their best skills, teamwork, and common sense to gather the clues, questions the witnesses and piece it all together! Along the way you just might learn something about NATURE!

All teams are equipped with their own portable crime scene kits, including some evidence gathered by the initial investigating team, as well as all the tools they will need. From there they head out to one of the scenes to begin to collect the evidence in order to identify who done it. Since there may be several suspects the teams must not miss any evidence and therefore are required to collect evidence from each of the six stations, any missed evidence could result in a miss-trial in the court room! CRIME SCENE: Here you will find the victim and some clues that you must gather. You and your team must work efficiently here because you may not have as much time to gather evidence as you may like. Chaos can abound if you are not diligent at working as a team. KILL SITE: A small task awaits your team before you can assess the evidence here. This one is tricky so you will need to use your best assessment skills to determine what evidence belongs to what suspect, or will you use it to rule someone out? WITNESS RESCUE: You have been given a tip about a witness to the crime! However, the witness has been kidnapped and you will need to use our special police dog to help you track the witness. First though, you have to get to the dog.. BALLLISTICS: The victim has some wounds on its body, one in particular was the result of an actual weapon, it is up to you to determine what weapon caused the wound and if the wound was inflicted before or after. ANALYSIS: A suspect has left evidence behind that needs to be analyzed. A series of logistics is called for as well as patience as we trace our suspects movements over the last 12-hours. This one will help identify other suspects through some evidence left at the crime scene, and help you to find those suspects for questioning.

Waste Water blower replacement

Sharon McLeay Times Contributor EPCOR was present at the regular Town council meeting on March 20 to discuss replacing a blower and motor at the Waste Water Treatment Plant (WWTP). Weve been having some issues with the blowers for the last number of months, weve been trying to rebuild the existing blowers, said Jesse Parker, director of engineering and operations for the town. When we constructed the new Waste Water Treatment Plan there was a decision made, or a thought, that eventually the blowers that we had in place could be sustained and maintained through an upgrade in the DNR plant that we had in place. Unfortunately thats kind of blown up a little bit for us and were looking at a replacement blower. Administration requested a new capital project budget be created in the amount of $66,000, with a $6,000 credit anticipated for the effort made to reclaim the existing blowers. In the existing plant, built in 2001, there were three blowers, two 60 horsepower ones and one 40 horsepower. Currently the WWTP is down to only one 40hp blower which is not enough to supply the air demand as the higher flow season, spring and warmer weather approaches. The WWTP is a biological plant and the bugs are relied on to do that treatment. They need the air to be able to do their job. The intent from EPCOR is that one blower will be requested this year and then a second next year. The aeration blowers in a Waste Water Plant are really the heart to the plant, if we did not have them we would not have power to the plant, its truly that important, said Craig Bonneville, Manager for EPCOR water services. The blowers weve selected are a higher capital cost, there were some that were cheaper, however, the operating costs are much less expensive than some of the other choices. So when we looked at the net present value over 10 years, these blowers while more expensive in year one are the most economic option over the lifecycle. The blowers installed when the original plant was built have been replaced approximately eight times over the course of the past 12 years. This is the third treatment technology and over time the use has changed. Bonneville said the current blowers arent the appropriate ones for the current use, which he thinks attribute to the history of failure. The latest replacement is two and a half years old, and all companies will only provide a one year warranty. The project proposed is to replace the blower and the motor. Two new 60 horsepower blowers will be brought in, and will be the primary blowers, one as stand by and one in use, alternating. Councillor Rocky Blokland made a motion to create a capital project budget for the Waste Water Treatment Plant blower replacement not to exceed $66,000. The funds are to be drawn from the financial stabilization fund. Councillor Earl Best was opposed to the motion. Tour committee changes The terms of reference for the Tour of Alberta committee have been revised, and the proposed committee size has been increased. The committee is to include eight directors, one chairperson and two council members. Councillors Dave Hamilton, Bob Sobol and Pat Fule signed on to be members of the committee. Council also appointed Jennifer Sawatzky, Jesse Parker, Jennifer Cuthbertson and Scott Carlson to the committee. Health day Council proclaimed June 1, 2013 as National Health and Fitness day in Strathmore.

ou To Thank y s! our DocTor

National Doctors Day is March 30th. This day was established to recognize physicians for their work and contributions to the communities they serve. Strathmore is very fortunate to have such wonderful doctors and medical staff dedicated to keeping our community healthy and vibrant. We are privileged to have an amazing hospital, including a 24-hour Emergency Room which is unique to a community our size. Our Doctors work diligently to keep the doors of our hospital open every day and we are thankful to them for their efforts. Mayor Grajczyk, members of Council and all Town Staff express their heartfelt gratitude for everything our doctors do. Their dedication to medicine, their support of community events, and their commitment to healthy living is a key part of what makes Strathmore such an amazing place to live and to raise a family. We ask you, the residents of Strathmore and Wheatland County, to remember your doctor this week. Show them your appreciation with a simple thank you and ensure our medical community knows that we appreciate them! From Mayor, Council & Town Staff

The school has participated in the program since its inception and it is designed to encourage kids to read in the upper elementary grades. It began on January 15 and ran until March 15 for a total of 60 days. The results were great! We had 117 out of 153 students fully participate in the program and enter into the draw. Some students read so much they had their names entered multiple times! 20 prizes were awarded on March 20 to the following students: Flames Tickets to the Wed., March 27 Game-Jacob Leinweber, Old Timers Hooded SweatshirtJoe Furfaro, Flames Hooded TShirtSavannah Anderson, Flames Mini Stick Right Hand Alicia OKeefe, Flames Mini Stick Left Hand-Shelby Lane, Flames 3 in 1 ShirtJacob Leinweber, Flames T-ShirtBlack Nicklaus Olson, Flames ToqueTyler Weisenburger, Flames CapTanner Bean, Flames CapTaylor King. There were also Chapters 10 Gift Certificates, for $20 each, that were drawn for as well. These winners are: Sam Lloyd, Shelby Lane, Niklaus, Olson, Emily Beardsell, Mackenzie Duggan, Hailey Sutherland, Tyson Weis, Cam McInnis, Matthew MacLean, Isaiah McKirgan. Once again, we are extremely grateful to our amazing Parent Council who continues to support this reading program, by providing the prizes to be given out each year. Thank you very much!

Spring break at the library

Shannon LeClair Times Reporter Spring vacation is upon us and many parents are trying to figure out something to keep their kids occupied for the week. The Strathmore Municipal Library is just one of many organizations offering something for those families. We know that families do have a difficult time during spring break with their children, what do they do during spring break, they sit at home and watch TV or lets try to find something fun for them to do. We have events that we are creating. On Wednesday, April 3 we are calling this our Family Fun Day, said Carmen Erison, assistant director of library services. Were dedicated to providing great programming to our community for all ages. Erison said the library is going to be booming, there will be tons of activities sure to keep kids busy through the whole day. At 10 a.m. local guest author Pat Mullen will be coming in to read from her childrens books. From 11 a.m. until 12 Noon there will be Science Made Fun held in the meeting room. Erison said there will be some funky science experiments that will be fun to work on while learning about science. From 1-2:30 p.m. is Create It which will be a round table filled with different crafts. Another local author, Ann Scheer, will be at the library from 3 p.m. until 4 p.m. to read her book. Were finishing it off from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m. were going to have an Xbox 360 Kinect in the library with some games for kids to come and have fun, and do some gaming in the library, said Erison. All day were also going to have games spread out throughout the library that families can come and play. Were going to have a giant Snakes and Ladders floor game, were going to haveJenga and Hungry, Hungry Hippos, all fun things for kids to come play. The Family Fun Day is completely free, is based on a drop in basis, with no registration required. On April 4 the library will be showing Wreck-It Ralph as part of the Thursday Fun Films, which is normally held on a Friday. Families are encouraged to bring their own snacks to the movie. At the end there will be a draw to see who gets to take the movie home. Then on April 5 from 12 Noon until 7 p.m. and April 6 from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. the library will be holding its bi-annual Book Sale. The prices have changed effective April 1 for our Book Sale. We will be charging .50 cents per item or three for $1. There will be a very wide selection of books, we have been weeding our collection to make room for new materials, said Erison. This is a fundraiser and so we increase the price a little bit so we can raise more money for programming. The book sale selection will include a little bit of almost everything. There will be adult fiction, young adult fiction, non-fiction and childrens books for sale.

MARKETING YOUR BUSINESS: A 3 PART SERIES

Part 1: How to Turn Follow-up Into Cash

Correction
In the March 15 article Community Enhancement Funds Decided it was identified that the Youth Club of Strathmore received $6,000 for 4 weeks of programming. That information was incorrect. The timeframe outlined in the actual application was: This is a pilot program that will run from April 1st through to December 31st (not inclusive of the summer months). Programming will be offered once a week for a 4-week session (monthly) and will run for approximately 2 1/2 hours per week. The goal of this program is to have each 4-week session run from a different location thus encompassing the demographics of the County. (i.e. Rockyford, Standard, Gleichen, Cluny, Hussar, Carseland, Lyalta). We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.

Fire collaboration works wonders

Sharon McLeay Times Contributor Dalum Fire Chief Albert Jensen is proud of a Fire Service Collaboration agreement negotiated between Dalum, Cluny, Rosebud and Rockyford Fire Services. It was initiated in December of 2012. Jensen developed the concept through a successful mutual aid agreement with Hussar. For 10 years, Hussar and Dalum receive fire alarms together, and send out both departments to all calls. (Dalum has also developed a good working agreement with the Drumheller Fire department.) Last winter we gained the agreement. Previously, departments had trouble coordinating services. After many meetings, we made this thing work. We broke so many barriers, it was crazy. Fire departments on their own, they love their own little areas. We overcame that, said Jensen. Our number one philosophy is that we work towards a common goal with one another. Jensen said it has improved relationships away from the job too. He said it increases the pool of talent that can be drawn from and it improves their chances of accomplishing goals. This agreement is different from the regular fire mutual aid agreements, which all the Wheatland County Fire departments have with each other. Normally, services respond to fire callouts, assess the scene and call in extra crews under the mutual aid agreement as needed. Jensen said the collaborative agreement has all the areas in the agreement called out to structure fires at the same time, arriving shortly one after the other. Not everyone in the beginning was for it. Then everyone bought into it and it is getting better and better. Other services wont call until they get on scene, and by that time, it (the fire fight) could be lost, said Jensen. He gave the example of a shop fire near Beiseker that happened last fall during harvest. Rockyford was first on scene and by the time Rockyford was out of water, Rosebud was rolling in. We were there on the edge of the County in 35 minutes. Most farmers are truckers; the county is not very wide, so an hour will get you anywhere. If you have a lot of stuff coming, you dont have to be there in the first five minutes. That is the great part, said Jensen. They had an unscheduled practise in the Dalum area with five departments responding. Jensen said there were 15 trucks on scene in 15 to 28 minutes. He said it works out really well in actual situations too. They have responded to the edge of the Beiseker area three times last year. The Wheatland area is large and Jensen thinks the areas farther from population centres deserve just as good a service as those close in. The agreement has helped facilitate good service to all areas, increasing efficiency and safety. They recently sent the Dalum pumper tanker back to Winnipeg for a refit, equipping it with a 5 inch discharge system, so that it can pump out of a dugout or canal. All of us we carry about 1600 feet each of 5 inch discharge hose, so between us we cover about a mile and can pump from anywhere now. We could do it because of the agreement with the other crews. We have gone from having limited water, to being able to pump up to a mile from a reservoir. We can flow about 1250 gal a minute over a mile. It takes about an hour to set up, said Jensen. You always hear about rural fire departments running out of water, so we addressed that too. So when there is call, immediately we all go out and now have 15,000 gallons of water on scene. Dalums rescue command truck, equipped with scene lighting, medical, rescue equipment and room to rest workers, also served the joint collaboration. In the last year Dalum and other services have been on scene over 24 hours. We did an all-nighter during harvest and we did another all-nighter this fall. Between Rockyford and us, these light up like a football field, we can see anywhere, said Jensen about the strobe lights on the truck. Jensen believes the funding equalization and the 60/40 funding split, initiated five years ago by the County, has helped associations and departments develop. We equalize the funding between departments in the Capital funding. That has been a great help. There is a truck capital fund with $500,000 per year for a new vehicle. It made us all feel equal. It was the start of making things better. Previously, we have all been knocking on doors for memberships. On the truck side, anyone can come forward for a proposal, said Jensen. We have come far in the last five years. Jensen said every area is proud of their individual halls and their ability to raise the money for their equipment. He feels fund raising gives the departments

Albert Jensen, Fire Chief for Dalum stands next to the outlet modifications done on their pumper tanker fire vehicle. These modifications were done to aid a collaborative plan between Hussar, Rockyford, Rosebud and Cluny, to enable the trucks to contribute to each others fire operation. Each tanker, from each area, carries 1600 feet of 5 inch discharge hose, so between all the area trucks, they can hook up about a mile of hose. The adaptations to the truck have allowed access to pump from external water sources at about 1250 gal. a minute over a mile away.

Sharon McLeay Photo

pride. He thinks services work best when they are community based and it increases their ability to fundraise. The existing service would cost a County-run service more. Jensen thinks there are lots of ideas out there to improve the system. For example, he would like to see an equipment exchange agreement, where County Fire Associations would have first rights to trade or bid on fire equipment up for replacement. He would also like to see all the trucks equipped with simple, standardized electronic recording and monitoring equipment, to help with record keeping, so the data would be entered on scene. Jensen believes that through cooperation, area fire services can find solutions to any problem, work together to achieve common goals, develop strong Associations and provide excellent care for Wheatland County residents.

The Strathmore Regional Arts Collective (SRAC) Board strategic planning board consists of Wanda Reinholdt (l-r), Janet Kurka, Jon Reeves, Sharon Sundgaard, Sheila Konschuh, Brandy Hebbes, Adam Furfaro, Joe van Keulen and Bob Sobol.

Could it be that death is every mans signature on his lifes portrait?

Does art make a difference?

Wanda Reinholdt and Sheila Konschuh Hope Bridges & SRAC When you hear someone say, that made a difference in my life, what is your first thought? Is what comes to mind that someone of influence impacted a life perhaps a teacher, counselor, officer, friend? But what if the reference is about art making a difference? Would you find it hard to believe? If so, you are not alone. In my lifetime, I too have thought there is little reason for arts and cultural activities other than for entertainment. And in a region like ours where the focus is on agriculture, oil and gas, and construction, its easy to understand. After all, it can seem frivolous to participate in the arts when economic issues are on our minds and day-to-day realities weigh heavily upon us. Why is it so hard for us to believe a story about art making a difference? What makes us want to limit the potential transformational power that arts and cultural experiences can have on community and individuals lives? Maybe it is because we have not heard examples of art making a valuable difference? I recently discovered a story of inspiration that, at first glance, is hard to identify with given the quality of life we experience here in Canada. Its the story of some people in Paraguay that have had no choice but to make their homes atop a landfill. At first glance, it is one of the most heartbreaking situations, but it quickly becomes an inspiring literal example of garbage turned into gold. It is the story of musical instruments being created from refuse in a landfill. And the opportunity to create and learn to play these upcycled instruments is changing the lives of entire families. The soon to be released documentary Landfill Harmonic will remind you that determination, creativity and a love of music can transform an entire community. Check out http://vimeo. com/52711779 There are also stories of transformation here at home: I have enjoyed local talent opening for main stage bands brought to our community by the Strathmore Musical Arts Society. What a great way to build confidence in a performer starting out in their career. In Zentangle

workshops hosted by Hope Bridges Society, I have observed participants experiencing reduction in chronic pain. Burnt Thicket Theatres patrons speak about how their hearts have been changed regarding their relationship with their son or daughter through seeing the show Hockey Dad. Blackfoot Crossing receives praise from visitors about how educational their experiences have been, and a Rosebud Theatre patron expresses gratitude for making the last outing with their father so memorable. Mary Boone, of Canadas Huffington Post, says it well: Art, if we let it, can be a respite. It can restore our spirit and help us reconnect to dreams, thoughts, and feelings. It can help us truly see, feel and learn if only we are willing to discover something beautiful, pleasurable, unique or unusual. The good news is that the potential for respite, restoration, reconnection and education through the arts exists here in Strathmore and surrounding regions. We have our own rich cultural heritage and diverse artistic community. Local area musicians, wood turners, architectural interior designers, dancers, go green upcyclers, zentanglers, African drummers, painters, actors, videographers, photographic artists, cultural entrepreneurs, cultural managers, philanthropists, directors, and singers are making a difference in our community. And these artists are currently binding together with strength and vitality, becoming much more accessible and effective. This is happening under the umbrella arts society called The Strathmore Regional Arts Collective (SRAC). Since our official start in the fall, SRAC has been developing a solid foundation of communication, governance, and sustainability. Our ultimate vision is to create a healthy and vibrant arts community through which lives are enhanced by access to and participation in the arts. And yes, this does include a building. But this is only part of the vision because the arts do so much more. If you or your organization would like to know more about or become involved with the Strathmore Regional Arts Collective (SRAC), please call the Board Chair, Brandy Hebbes at 403 312 7244 or myself, Wanda, at 403 901 5081.

Food for Fines returns

Shannon LeClair Times Reporter As the weather gradually begins to warm people are beginning to venture outside and are often looking for ways to get out of the house and enjoy the change. Throughout the month of April the Strathmore Municipal Library has a few reasons to invite you out of your house and into theirs. Last year in April the library first introduced Food for Fines to its patrons. This year the popular fundraiser is back and will run from April 1 to 30. This is sort of the librarys way and the communitys way to give back to the people in need. The way the Food for Fines works is you come into the library during the month of April and for every one non-perishable food item that you donate we waive $2 of your overdue fines, said Carmen Erison, assistant director of library services. The program was a success with over 500 items being donated for the food bank. Erison said the goal this year is to collect 750 items to donate to the Wheatland County Food Bank. Anyone can stop in the library throughout the month to donate, whether they have overdue fines to take care of or not, said Erison.

MP Sorenson says, Budget 2013 stays the course for job creation, economic growth and long-term prosperity
From the office of Kevin Sorenson Kevin Sorenson, Member of Parliament for Crowfoot is pleased with Economic Action Plan 2013s commitment to continue focusing on creating jobs, economic growth and long-term prosperity. Keeping taxes low and our steadfast commitment to a balanced federal budget by 2015 is good news for Alberta workers and their families, Sorenson says. This Budget takes action by: helping Canadians actually connect with jobs they want; continuing to build infrastructure with a new Building Canada Plan; and, working to support high-quality, value-added jobs in important sectors of the Canadian economy. These initiatives will be useful in our riding. We received funding from the first Building Canada Fund. Our local agriculture and energy sectors will benefit from this Budgets providing: tax relief for new manufacturing equipment; a new Canada Job Grant; the creation of further opportunities for apprentices; and, the largest investment in job creating infrastructure in the history of Canada. Budget 2013s Community Improvement Fund will work to support local community projects in communities in our riding, and across Canada. I hope we can work with the new P3 Canada Fund to support innovative ways to build infrastructure projects faster and provide better value for taxpayers through public-private partnerships. Since the depth of the global economic recession, the Canadian economy has created over 950,000 net new jobs the best record among advanced economies. In Economic Action Plan 2012, we made a choice. We chose to take decisive action to ensure our economy will create good jobs and sustain a higher quality of life for hardworking Canadian families. Economic Action Plan 2013 builds on the strong foundation we laid last year in fact, the strong foundation we have laid since 2006 to create jobs, growth and longterm prosperity for hardworking Canadian families, Sorenson concludes. Budget 2013 is available online at (http://www.budget. gc.ca/2013/home-accueil-eng.html).

School of the blues

Pat Fule Fule for Thought Last weeks school-related column got a bit serious, so I thought Id try to lighten the mood today. Im sure everybody has funny things that happen at work; the problem with a teachers job, is that you are often on display WHEN these things hit you! Teenagers love it when you screw up, they wait for it they even seem to THRIVE on it! Recently, a colleague of mine arrived at my door during a Grade 11 English class. He threw open the door, holding a tied up Co-Op bag, saying, Here, catch! He fired the bag and its contents at me, followed by the words, Im returning your wifes pants! The class erupted into laughter, and Im sure I blushed a deep red! The pants had been hemmed by another lady and this pal was making sure I got them! I tried to explain this to my students, but they carried on laughing, shaking their heads in disbelief! I guess I had it coming I do sometimes do my own teasing. Tom, the caretaker, at our school has been on the receiving end of some of it. Hes now in his mid 50s, and weve worked together for about 20 years. Early each morning, he drives a RideOn Zamboni-like floor cleaner to scrub our gym floors. Since he circles the gym turning left all the time, I told him that he looks like hes in the SENIORS version of NASCAR! That did not go over as well as I thought it would! Another day, he left this floor cleaner running in the hallway outside the gym. Now, in my defense, I didnt know his supervisor was in that morning. What would ANY fun loving teacher do on a preparation period, but steal it?! I mean, come on, the key was in it, and it looked like a lot of fun! So, after I figured the key part out and started it I sort of stole it! It actually goes pretty fast for a vehicle INSIDE a big school. I even felt like I was HELPING Tom because I WAS cleaning the floors as I drove off! I drove it down our wide hallway, and ditched it behind a corner. I knew he wouldnt be away long, so I hopped off, put it in park and left it running. Then I waited way down at the other end and watched as he tried to explain to his boss WHERE the machine was! It was pretty funny, until the alarm on it went off, with a repeating and VERY loud beeping! Who knew that if it was left stationary AND running with the key in, an alarm would sound?! Tom and his boss ran to follow the wet trail of my getaway, and the loud alarm! Sheepishly, I came back and fessed up it WAS a fun joyride, though! Now, whenever Tom drives past me in the halls, he stares me down (with an evil) look Id say! He wont even pick me up when I stick out my thumb to try and hitch a ride to my next class! Boy, some guys are sensitive! Another time his supervisor visited, a recently repaired vacuum had just arrived. I guess it was all pretty exciting, because they were both talking, and making a lot of hand gestures. They didnt even hear my comment as I went past. Tom asked me what I said, and I replied, thats the first time in years Ive seen you with a vacuum thats actually RUNNING I didnt even know you knew how to turn it on! Again, with the glare sheesh I was just kidding! Why so serious??!! (Batman movie reference there!) Tom was also with another of my teacher pals for a bit of a slapstick event. Back when the high school was in the current Crowther Memorial building, we had just taken delivery of some new 32 color TVs, as well as new VCRs (remember them?) Bob was pushing an A/V cart with the TV and VCR. Now the TV was on the top shelf, the VCR connected to the TV by its cables (thats cuz some of us arent so good with technology!). He was walking with Tom our caretaker, and he pushed the cart while they had a lovely morning conversation. The conversation lasted until one of the carts front wheels suddenly turned sideways. Instead of carrying on to class, Bob watched as the TV and VCR (attached by its umbilical cord), were launched forward and into thin air! Now, I dont know how loud of a noise a new 32 TV and VCR make when they hit a hallway floor, but it must have been spectacular!! The TV and VCR had been killed, broken screen glass, plastic, and bits of metal, lay around the crash site. My other teacher pals and I felt horrible for Bob! That is, until the idea came to us, to put a fake School Division letter mentioning that his pay cheque would be deducted the amount of TV/VCR replacement! I LOVE my job! (Fule for Thought is a slice of life humourous column that appears in the Strathmore Times, written by long-time resident, town councillor, high school teacher, coach, husband and father of two Pat Fule. Letters to the editor

Recreational fees necessary

To the Editor There is no way I am the only person who has been this annoyed to write about it, but I have certainly been prodded enough to do it today. I happen to be an employee of this town we all call home, rural and urban alike, but I must admit I get royally frustrated with the lack of understanding that some people have. Being a fond believer of getting all the facts if possible before making an conviction; I have heard my fair share of letters concerning out of town fees that are sent out from the Strathmore Family Centre. Like most people I dont enjoy paying taxes, but I understand the reason behind most, not all. And I wouldnt pretend to either, as I swear I am not the only one in this boat. If you enjoy paying taxes well you are a little strange, but to each their own. This is my opinion and solely that, my own. No one elses so I am not about to start putting words in others mouths but I would like to voice one thing about these out of town fees. At the arena it isnt uncommon to receive annoyed letters from our rural residents, not many, but enough that it can be a little frustrating to feel that you are being blamed for something that is really not in the hands of the workers that work in the facility. While I do understand that paying these fees is certainly a bother but it isnt like the residents of the inner limits of Strathmore dont pay either. A part of our taxes goes to the facilities, but the difference is there is it is all citizens of Strathmore that pay. Rural residents only pay if their child plays hockey, ringette or skate club; it isnt the whole community that lives a bit outside of the technical limits. I am one of those people who pay for the entire facility without having a child in any activity there, yet I have no problem with the tax coming out to go there. As long as it stands, then kids of other families get to enjoy the sports and fun there. Why is it that there are out of town fees in the first place? I learnt this from working there with the town of Strathmore employees; Wheatland County had once upon the time gave a contribution to the rink - there werent out of town fees, but that well has long ago dried up. They do not pay into the Family Centre anymore and this is the reason for the fees, from what I understand. Of course there is certainly a lot more behind it, but that was the gist. I was once a rural kid myself, though I never played hockey or any sport; but I did hear my parents often talk about the fees or rather gripe about it, but they still paid. In comparison, the fee is chump change. Hockey fees by themselves are just jaw dropping, but again parents pay because they want their children to enjoy what they do. So with this little personal opinion letter, I hope that maybe before more letters start dropping in accusing the Family Centre of being unreasonable to send out the fees, people might actually talk to the town office to understand why there are fees. Couldnt hurt right? If you dont agree with what Im saying, thats perfectly fine, to each their own, but at least do a little research or even talk to Wheatland County about why they do not contribute anymore. Issue of communication and respect

Sharon McLeay Times Contributor The Hidden Valley Golf Resort (HVGR) Cabin Owners Association is attempting to negotiate a new lease for the Siksika land designation of the Hidden Valley Golf Resort. Reserve land is currently owned by the Crown and held for First Nation Peoples use, a much contested premise by First Nations Peoples. Under the Indian Act, land can be designated and leased for purposes such as the HVGR, by a vote from the First Nation tribal members. There are 305 cottage owners in the HVGR affected. A lease for a 50 year term ran out Dec. 2012. A referendum held on the Reserve opposed having the designation in place. The vote had a 30 per cent of voter turnout. It is a designation for the land, because we are under the Indian Act. In essence, all of Siksika owns the land. So therefore, one person or Chief and Council cannot make a decision on behalf of the Nation. The designation was voted on and the vote was no, said Chief Fred Rabbit Carrier. The vote was to extend the designation, not the lease, but the designation. We cannot go forward on the lease, until the designation is approved as a whole. A short term, two to three year extension lease was proposed by the negotiation committee, and Chief and Council passed a motion proposing to do a door-to-door consultation, determining whether the Siksika People want to consider another referendum. The Chief and Council only passed a motion to consult, as a temporary measure to see if the undecided voters will consider another referendum, said Chief Rabbit Carrier. Because of time constraints to conduct the poll, and reach all the people, the process could take until late October. The HVGR negotiation committee had hoped that a lease extension could be in place by the end of June. If there is no extension cabin owners will begin to remove their cabins from the property and evacuate between October and the end of the year. In our opinion, it would prove unfortunate for the Siksika Nation to simply throw away needlessly its only significant source of revenue that currently exceeds $1 million per annum. It also provides permanent employment at a guaranteed 75 per cent ratio for Siksika members (which is exceeded in actual practice year after year), free golf and other HVGR benefits for Nation members. We are prepared to discuss with Chief and Council improvements to the benefits that can accrue to the Nation from HVGR. But as you know, we cannot do that if there is no dialogue or no better option other than moving out this year. Without a plan in place, the resort will fall into disrepair and neglect unless the Nation can raise $1.3 million (being the HVGR annual operating budget) from other sources. Without the $1.3 million raised from the cottage owners on an annual basis, to manage and operate HVGR, the resort will cease to exist as we know it, said Andrew Bear Robe, Chairman of the negotiating committee, in correspondence with Siksika Chief Rabbit Carrier and Council. The Cabin Association Negotiating committee is considering a public relations campaign to supply the Siksika residents with as much information as possible to make a considered decision. Dennis Burgess, resort manager, said there would be no advantage to Siksika to have the cabin owners remove their property and he said cabin owners would definitely not just abandon the cabins. Burgess said there are ways to remove the cabins from the properties. He said that should Siksika decide to take over the resort, it would be a long process, beginning with taking the matter to Indian Affairs for approval and re-designating the site to a commercial enterprise. Chief Rabbit Carrier said that the Siksika People could decide to run the resort as a not-for-profit, but that decision would be in the hands of the people. He could not comment whether there was enough funding in place to adequately run such an operation. There has been some speculation that a lack of respect on both sides has hindered negotiations. An incident regarding the inappropriate disposal of a stray dog on reserve land had social media responses calling the negotiations the Dead Dog referendum. Siksika Council requested that the previous Board of Directors must resign before the Chief and Council would renegotiate with the Association. The Board complied with their wishes, considering everyones needs, and stepped down. A new Board will be elected at the Annual General meeting held April 30. The recent vandalism at the resort has cabin owners also feeling disrespected. There is speculation that fringe activists from the reserve are at fault; however, that has not been confirmed by police. There has also been a reference to possible legal action, if discussions break down. There is openness from the negotiating committee and the cabin owners, to see communication lines and community relations restored. As a cottage owner, I would work together with the Nation to come up with a lease that is fair and equitable to us both, said Earl Best. I honestly believe that if you sat the cottage owners down and the Siksika Nation members down and got everyone to talk, things would improve. Two groups of people cant have a good relationship without communication. It makes us sad and anxious. I am not angry. I just want to be there. I want my kids and grandkids to visit there because we love it there. It is just a happy place. For nobody to use it, or see it destroyed, is the worst scenario, said Colleen Best, cabin owner. It would be good to see relationships restored. There is a workable solution.

Capsule Comments
In the 19th century, there was no control over the sale of patented medicines and many contained addictive substances like laudanum, which contains tincture of opium. It made addicts out of many people. An example was Mrs. Winslows Soothing Syrup. Many babies died because they were breastfed by mothers taking the nostrum and the childs immature metabolic system couldnt handle the narcotic and died from it. There is much more control and safety today. More than 50,000 Canadians have a stroke each year and one-third die from it. Speed is of the essence for successful treatment so being familiar with the signs of a stroke is important. They include: sudden weakness, trouble speaking, sudden vision problems, sudden headache and dizziness. Call 911 ASAP. Listening and playing music is good for your health and well-being. However, some musicians can develop stress injuries playing certain instruments. Examples include fiddlers neck due to the chin-rest on the violin. Clarinettists can get a form of contact dermatitis called cheilitis on the middle of the lower lip. And cellists can get some soreness or redness on the ribs from contact with the cello. As we age, we have more medical problems and often there is a pill of every ill. Our bodys ability to metabolize and excrete drugs lessens with age due to our reduced kidney and liver functions. Dizziness can occur often in the elderly and may be due to medications. Talk to your doctor and pharmacist if you are concerned. Questions about your medications? We have the answers. See you soon.

Holy Cross hosts 3rd annual famine

Holy Cross Collegiate held their third Annual 25-Hour Famine on March 15-16. Seventy-three students as well as several staff participated in the event, raising $2,660 for the Catholic charity, Chalice. Students began their famine at 1 p.m. on Friday and survived on juice and water until the 2 p.m. on Saturday. They filled their time with a variety of fun group activities, sports in the gym, as well as quiet reflection periods and Mass. Thank you to all the students who were part of the famine and to all staff who coordinated this special event. A BIG thank you to the parents who donated feast items and cooked up a post-famine feast that was heartily enjoyed by everyone involved.

Rosebud Theatre student presents onewoman show: I, Claudia

Laureen F. Guenther Times Contributor Natalie Gauthier, fourth-year student at Rosebud School of the Arts, will perform the one-woman play, I, Claudia in Rosebuds Community Hall, April 6-8. I, Claudia is Gauthiers Final Project, the culmination of all shes learned at Rosebud. Her final year has focused on preparing this project, but, in a way, shes been preparing for it since high school. Gauthier saw I, Claudia for the first time when she was 17. Her mother remembers her daughter saying afterward, Im going to do that play one day. Two years later, during her first Rosebud year, Gauthier saw I, Claudia again - and again, she made a declaration: If I make it til fourth year, Im doing I, Claudia (for my Final Project). But I, Claudia seemed illogical, impractical. As a one-woman show, it requires memorizing 37 entire pages of dialogue. Being the only actor on stage also means, If I forget my lines, theres no one to cue me. She read other plays, explored writing her own, and considered doing a musical. In the end, I just had to do (I, Claudia), she says. I had no other option. It would have been a cop-out not to....It says everything I want to say. Doing I, Claudia has been a gift at the end of my time in Rosebud, Gauthier says. Shes played diverse roles at Rosebud, ranging from young children to an 80-year-old woman, including Willy in Gifts of the Magi, Josie Pye in Anne of Green Gables, and Rebecca Nurse in The Crucible. In I, Claudia, she plays someone much closer to herself. Claudia is 12 and - and hilarious, struggling to grow up while her parents divorce. Her life story doesnt parallel Claudias, but, Gauthier says, I feel like, getting to play Claudia... this is me. I dont have to hide it....I dont have to keep it in check. Its not that youll see the same Natalie as you see walking down the street, she says, and thats the person youre going to see on the stage. But theres something at my core. Theres an essence of who I am.

Bambi is one super sweet and awesome cat. She is excellent with other pets, children but mostly dogs! Bambi LOVES all dogs, big and small. She is a door darter so we are looking for a home that would perhaps provide her with a safe enclosure she can go out into, or teach her how to be on a harness supervised. Wonderful girl, dont miss out!

Preparation and rehearsal have been intense, drawing on all the lessons of the Rosebud years. In addition to acting, marketing, set construction, wardrobe all the practical aspects of theatre -- Gauthier says, Theatre school is not unlike therapy.... You have to look at yourself honestly and be willing to face the (emotional) stuff that youd rather maybe just keep tucked away. That emotional work continues into the rehearsal process. During one recent session, Gauthier says, I was crying, and I said, I just want to be able to do the work! Her director, Paul Muir, Rosebuds Director of Education, responded, Natalie, this is part of the work. Amidst all the pressures, Gauthiers glad she chose this path. Its overwhelming...and Im really thankful for all the support, she says. But Im doing what I want to do. After I, Claudia, Natalie Gauthier will act in Shakespeares Winter Tale at Full Circle Theatre in May. Also in May, shell record her first CD of original music. This fall, after graduation, shell stay around the village to act in Rosebud Theatres Our Town. For tickets to I, Claudia call Trish at 403-823-0215.

We teach responsible tanning!

Medications and other substances (eg. dyes used to tattoo the skin, certain foods, etc.) can sensitize a persons skin to ultraviolet light. the most common reaction is photosensitivity. Photosensitivity occurs when the level of uV exposure needed to produce a burn is reduced. so instead of helping someone to tan more easily, photosensitizing agents should be thought of in terms of how easily they cause a person to burn. the best way to determine if a medication has photosensitizing potential is to consult with the prescribing medical practitioner or pharmacist.

Strathmore and area choral students came home with a number of awards after attending the Drumheller Music Festival finals on March 21. Reanna Thiessen (l) with the Senior Choir awards. Jennifer Thiessen (r) with the Junior Choir award.

Whos Crazy Now? A comedy in 3 acts

Manny Everett Times Contributor The Hussar Municipal Librarys Dinner Theatre production of Samuel Frenchs Whos Crazy Now? play written by Gerald Bell was a huge success on the weekend. The evening began with cocktails, followed by a sit down dinner at 5 p.m. The play, a comedy in 3 acts, followed at 7 p.m. with a second intermission that featured dessert before finishing off the evening with the last part of the play. The stage is set in an insane asylum where a number of lady school teachers, who have obviously lost their mental capacities, try to educate their pupils. This play starts hilariously when the ladies talk and act like their former charges. As every good book or play a love story is introduced with the visit of the niece (played by Meagan Hay) of the superintendent (Mr. Arthur, played by John Reinholdt) and a young staff doctor (Dr. Van, played by Tobias Parker). The neice and the doctor each think the other is an inmate. The Uncle who runs the asylum brings the niece there to show her what becomes of teachers, hoping she will change her mind. The niece thinks she would like to be a teacher, but after witnessing the antics of schoolteachers she decides to marry the young doctor in the end. The successful evening brought in $3,850 from the ticket sales for the dinner and play, and the raffle of the iPad (won by Clay Armstrong) brought in around $500. Jennifer Pratt, Secretary of the Hussar Library Board, said It was an extremely hilarious evening and wonderful to see some new faces on the stage. Daniel Schoblocher, from Strathmore who played the Principal in drag was priceless. Mary Ann Oxtoby played two characters of Miss Art and Miss Music and it certainly added to the dimension of the plays theme.

Warriors impressive run to finals

Gleichen Figure Skating Club presented their seasons end performance titled The Luck of the Irish. Top left: Jazmin Andruskievicz dancing to the Irish Rovers song The Unicorn. Top right: Solo performance by Jourdyn Sammons. Right: Angel Lussier and Morgan Rose in their duet.

Mario Prusina Times Editor The Wheatland Warriors were just one step away from capping off the perfect season in the SCAHL. The local double-A midget team used their second seed in the division and battled their way to the league final, before being ousted in the best-of-five championship series. Despite pushing the Okotoks Oilers to the limit in every game, the Warriors were defeated in three games. It was close every game was pretty much (separated) by a goal, except the first game when they got an empty netter, said head coach Paden Grant. Both teams play similar, but the breaks didnt go our way. The boys played really well, but so did they. It really could have went either way. The Warriors opened the series with a 2-0 road loss in Game 1 on March 21, before losing a close one on the road in Game 2, falling 3-2 on March 23. The team then suffered a 2-1 loss in Game 3 at the Strathmore Family Centre, ending their season.

Another successful year for Gleichen Figure Skating Club

Manny Everett Times Contributor Even though St. Patricks Day falls on March 17, everything at the Gleichen Arena was green on the weekend as the Skating Club held their annual Carnival The Luck of the Irish on March 23. A fantastic performance from all the skaters from Gleichen and area graced the ice at the local area on Saturday. The opening number featured the Junior and Senior StarSkaters Keira Brown, Brianna French, Angel Lussier, Katie McCormack, Kayla Pietrobono, Morgan Rose, Stephanie Bolinger, Taylor Lassiter, Jourdyn Sammons, Rebekah Schalin, Korrie Stewart and Taylor Stewart. These girls set the stage and flavour of the entire program showing off their skating skills. Erica Risseuw followed with a solo performance as their guest skater. The Lepachauns came next as Hannah Brown, Devon Laprise, Hailey Manca, Valley Manca, Chelsea Noseworthy and Hailey Permann, some of the youngest skaters in the club, performed. The Disco Frogs came next in their shiny green costumes, Phoenix Big Snake, Sarah Laprise, Molly Maynard, Manney McArthur and Payton Yule. The four-year-old group of animals skated on the ice in their animal costumes to the Irish Rovers song The Unicorn. Even falling on the ice and getting up was cute because it was obvious they loved the attention and Jazmin Andruskievz, Gage Husband, Carson Kalbhen, Jaxon Permann, Maysa Schiffner and Emma Screpnek showed off their confidence on the ice. In between solo performances from the Junior and Senior StarSkaters performances, the last group of Irish Farmers Carter Brown, Charlotte Jackson, Hudson Laprise, Rowdy Maynard, Hardy McArthur, Jacob Screpnek and Taylor Yule came out with their green vests and green plaid hats. Carrie Lassiter, long time coach for the Club (from Bassano), graced the ice at the Grand Finale and helped with the littlest skaters. The club looks forward to the fall when the season starts up again, and thanked everyone, especially the parents for helping with the costuming and for their dedication to the program in Gleichen.

According to Grant, falling by one goal in each game almost hurt more than being blown out. Its almost harder its good to know we were right there with the top team in the league, but its tough, said Grant. The team was pretty distraught after the game, its tough to lose that way. But they have to hold their head high they played well all year and we were right there until the bitter end. Im happy with the way our year went and how far we made it. According to Grant, the team formed a real bond during the course of the year and they improved from start to finish. We kept improving throughout the year we had our stumbles and falls throughout the year like any team, but at the end of the year, we were playing our best hockey, said Grant. We played a lot of hockey in a short amount of time (near the end of the season) and sometimes things dont go your way. The Hockey Gods werent really smiling down on us in this last series, but thats the way it goes.

Chiefs impress at provincial tournament

Mario Prusina Times Editor The Wheatland Chiefs got caught in a massive spring storm on their way to the provincial championship tournament, spending nearly 17 hours on a bus somewhere along the QE2. However, when the local double-A midget team made it to Whitecourt for the 10-team tournament, they created a storm of their own. The Chiefs finished first in their pool with an impressive 3-0-1 record and earned a berth in the provincial championship semi-finals. After missing their scheduled game on March 21, the Chiefs opened the tournament with a 3-1 victory over the host Whitecourt Wolverines the following morning, before earning another 3-1 win over the Fort Saskatchewan later that afternoon. The Chiefs would then face league rival Red Deer on March 23, posting a 4-4 draw, before closing out the round robin portion of the tournament with a 3-1 win over the SSAC Lakewood Chev Olds.

Teaching the skills to hit the open road

Shannon LeClair Times Reporter With spring comes the desire to hit the open road, and what better way to do it than on the back of your motorcycle with the sun beating on your face. Theres only one thing standing in your way: getting your bike license, which used to mean a drive to Calgary to be in a class with 10 to 12 other students. There arent any motorcycle training facilities east of Calgary until Brooks, which means many enthusiasts, or future enthusiasts in the area had been missing out. Dennis Bigras, who has been riding for 40 years, saw an opportunity to open a school here in Strathmore, and offer a small town instruction experience. He has worked with the Calgary Safety Council for two years, and then with Fleet Safety International for one year and then Stampede Driving for a year. Student feedback from those years is what he has used to create his instructional experience. I have been riding for about 40 years and learning to become an instructor and now a senior instructor I can pass on the knowledge that I have learned to new riders and to even guys and gals who have want to get back on the bike, said Bigras. The Mobile Motorcycle Training School will offer beginner and refresher courses to the area. Right now Bigras has two training lots in Strathmore that he can utilize. One is at the Curling rink parking lot and the other is at Wheatland Elementary School. Bigras said he is appreciative of the support he has received from the Curling Club and both Westmount and Wheatland schools. For the refresher course participants will need to have their own bike, but for the beginner course he has three training bikes available. The class size in comparison for the value of whats being charged is far less then what is in Calgary. So for the same kind of money if you were to go to Calgary its 10 to 12 riders per class, well here its going to be three to four riders per class, said Bigras. Its a really good idea to know how to ride a bicycle before you take a course like this. I have had people show up who have never ridden a bicycle and its really hard to train them to ride a motorcycle. What I am looking to give people at the end of the course is the confidence and competence in riding a bike because essentially that is what the examiner is looking for. The instructor gives the correct foundation of what to do, how to do it and then from there its a matter of practicing said Bigras. Even though he has been riding for years, each spring he practices and gets used to the feel of his Yamaha 1300 Royal Star Cruiser all over again. The thing that people forget is they think riding motorcycles is like riding a bike and its not, said Bigras. Theres a lot of balance and wherewithal you need to have because all of a sudden youre coming to a stop sign, youre slowing down, did you notice the pea gravel on the ground, are you going to put your feet on something you could slide out, are you square with balancing, how are you handling your brakes when you come up to a stop, have you done your shoulder check to be sure that some idiot is not going to run in behind you? Youre going to learn the right techniques, with the right methodology and you get to practice that, and then you can take that away and you can practice it as much as you like knowing youre doing it the right way. Bigras will offer a six-hour refresher course for anyone interested. The beginner course is two to three hours of classroom time, which will typically be held on Tuesday nights at Westmount School. The lot training with be held on Saturdays and Sundays, with each day beginning at 9 a.m. On the Sunday class there will be two

After finding a passion for teaching people how to ride Dennis Bigras is combining his passion, and bucket list dream of owning his own business. The Mobile Motorcycle Training School will serve Strathmore and area, and will help see new enthusiasts get on the road sooner, without having to go to Calgary.

Provincial Silver Medal Champions!!

On the weekend of March 22nd, the Strathmore Fire & Ice U12B ringette team travelled to Sherwood Park to compete in the Provincial Championship games. A spring snow storm may have tried to stop them, but they made it there ready to take on the zone champions from throughout Alberta. The competition started with a tough game against South Calgary, a skills competition and an opening ceremony where all the girls were congratulated for winning their zones and earning the right to be at this playoff event. The following day saw them compete against Red Deer and Sherwood park where they managed to pull together as a team and advance to the semi-finals against Bowview which ended in an overtime victory for Strathmore. In the end, Strathmore Fire & Ice was proud to play in the gold medal game against Red Deer and thrilled to skate away with the silver medal knowing they earned it! The motto of Strathmore Minor Ringette is Fun, Fitness, Friendship and FairPlay and these girls were a perfect example of this throughout the season and we couldnt be more proud of them! Congratulations Fire & Ice, you are unstoppable. Back row: Coach Rhonda Olson, Emily Bailie, Coach Randal Praeker, Brooklyn Reinhart, Grace Olson, Hailey Kenney, Carly Krahenbil, Coach Kim Stanlake-Cammer, Payton Jensen, Grace Praeker. Middle row: Makenzie Hansen, Mackenzie Duggan, Shelby Lane, Aubrie Hunter Front Row: McKenna Blades.

to three hours of road training as well. Participants of the course will also have the options of using one of the school bikes to take their class 6 test. He has trained people who are still having lots of problems on the lot, and at the end of the day when he asks them what they have learned, he has had students saying it wasnt for them. I have trained people that have never touched a bike ever and within two days they already have the confidence and competence and they passed their test. Theyre always surprised with themselves that theyre able to do this, said Bigras. Bigras said statistically most people fail their road test because of class five errors, like rolling up to a stop and not stopping, forgetting to turn off your signal light. What the school and my experience does is teach people that what you need to do on a motorcycle has to be automatic and thats where the practice comes in. If you get yourself into some trouble, you dont (want) have to think about what do I do first, second and third, how do I do it? I show you how to do that, and you have to do that to the level I would expect you can do it, and if you cant do it then Im going to let you know so that you dont endanger yourself, said Bigras. Motorcycles dont have seatbelts and Bigras tells his students that they wear their seatbelts, which means they need to make sure they are wearing the proper gear. Other areas covered in training include balance and speed control, situational awareness, collision avoidance and reading a curve ahead of time. There is also the option of a womens only course if three to four women sign up for training. To find out more about the Mobile Motorcycle Training School go to www.mobilemotorcycletraining.ca or call Dennis Bigras at 403-901-7027.

Dancing the night away!

Over 90 square dancers from Strathmore, Calgary, Nanton, Airdrie, Olds and other areas converged to the Westmount Elementary School Gym, for the annual Wearin O The Green dance on March 23. This dance was originated by Joe Griffith, after he moved here around 1974. Seven callers were in attendance, including our own Dave Littlefair, Kip Condon and Larry Warman, and there were 11 squares. Following the dance, fruit, home made cookies and hot cross buns were served with a choice of tea, coffee or hot chocolate.
