Kyla Peck Period 2 March 19, 2013 Asmaa Abdeljaber Chemical Reactions of Copper and Percent Yield Lab

Objectives: The purpose of the lab is to recover 100% of the copper. Hypothesis: At the end of the Copper and Percent Yield lab, 75% of the copper will be recovered. Safety: HNO3 is an irritant, use with extreme caution, under the fume hood. Use caution when handling hot glassware. Do not leave the burner unattended. -Wear an apron and goggles at all times - Be careful of glass - Wear closed toe shoes - No eating or drinking - No horse playing - Clean up any spills Materials: - 0.50 g of Cu - 250mL Beaker - 4-5mL if concentrated HNO3 - 100mL of distilled water - 30mL of 3.0 M NaOH - Boiling chip

- Stirring Rod - 200mL of very hot distilled water - Parafilm - 15.0mL of 6.0 M H2SO4 - Tongs - 2.00 g of Zinc metal - Empty evaporating dish - 5mL of distilled water - 5mL of acetone

Procedure: Day 1 1. Weigh 0.50 g of Cu and place in a 250mL beaker 2. Add 4-5mL of concentrated HNO3 to the beaker IN THE FUME HOOD. Record your observations. 3. After the reaction is complete, add 100mL of distilled water to the beaker. 4. Add 30mL of 3.0 M NaOH to the solution in your beaker. Record your observations. 5. Add a boiling chip and carefully heat the solution while stirring with a stirring rod. Do not let the solution boil. Record your observations. 6. Allow the solid to settle and then decant the liquid. Add about 200mL of very hot distilled water, stir; allow the solid too settle again and then decant once more. 7. Wrap the beaker with Parafilm. Label the beaker for identification.

Day 2 1. Add 15.0mL of 6.0 M H2SO4. Stir vigorously until color change. Record your observations. 2. Remove the boiling chip with tongs and rinse slightly into the beaker with distilled water. 3. In the hood, add 2.00 g of Zinc metal all at once and stir until the liquid is clear and the bubbling has stopped. Record your observations. 4. Take the mass of an empty evaporating dish and record. 5. When gas evolutions has ceased, decant the solution and transfer the precipitate to the evaporating dish, scraping the copper out of needed. 6. Wash the precipitated copper with about 5mL of distilled water; allow settling; decanting the liquid and repeating. 7. Wash with 5mL of acetone and allow it to settle and decant the liquid. 8. Prepare a steam bath and dry the product for at least 5 minutes. Wipe the bottom of the evaporating dish and take the mass. 9. Heat again and take the mass again. The mass should be constant. 10. Clean up your lab station
