How do your walls effect your electricity bills?

Did you know that the color and insulation of your walls can effect your electricity bills? If you were stuck in a desert, with the sun beating down on you, would you rather be wearing a white or a black shirt. Of course you would rather be wearing a white shirt because it deflects the sun whereas black absorbs it. Well the same principles apply to your house and its exterior.

Most people know that lighter colors reflect more heat and darker colors absorb more heat, but do you know why? Well when light hits an object, some of it is absorbed and some of it is reflected. The lighter the color, the more light it is reflecting and the darker the color is, the more light it is absorbing. The laws of thermodynamics state that this absorbed light has to go somewhere, so it gets turned into heat. So, in conclusion, having darker interior and exterior walls heat up your house and cause your air conditioners to work harder which raises your electricity bill
