Trend towards halogen free plastic compounds and coloration Halogen free definition Halogenated colorants Structurally non halogenated pigments
2012
Slide 2
Global consumer demand for manufactured product is increasing and so is the amount of waste created. Due to the shortening life cycles of electronic appliances such as laptops, mobile phones, the electronic segments waste volume is especially growing (E-waste). Manufactured products contain many valuable resources that can be recycled. When recycling processes are not optimal, these processes introduce risks of generating hazardous by-products from e.g. halogen containing compounds. Latest regulations focus more on halogenated substances (RoHS, IPC-4101B) WEEE - separation requirements for plastics containing brominated flame retardants
2012
Slide 4
The debate continues over the risk that certain halogenated substances pose, however market perception is a key driver towards halogen-free compounds. Many OEMs have publicly stated their intent to become "halogen-free.
Halogen free is no longer a marketing term but a real market
Clariant is evaluating the impact of this discussion on the colorants business and the need for halogen free colorants.

- Halogenated colorants - Halogen free* colorants
Halogenated colorants
Organic colorants are defined as a system of (1) conjugated double bonds connected by (2) chromophores and modified by (3) substituent groups (e.g. halogens)
Substituents like chlorine and bromine play an important role in a pigments hue and chemical stability.
The halogen contents in a pigments structure is dependent on the pigment chemistry Colorants without halogens in their structure are available as well

Avoiding the use of halogenated colorants has serious consequences for the colorant selection.

Conclusions
The contribution of halogens of certain halogenated colorants in the plastic compound is far lower than that of PVC and halogenated flame retardants. However, for highly halogenated pigments at common concentrations in plastics, it is possible to determine chlorine or bromine levels above those required by IPC4101B.
As determined using the industry standard IEC 61189-2:2006 IC as well a high end XRF screening equipment
Care should be taken when formulating halogen free compounds when using highly halogenated flame retardants.
It is recommended to use structurally halogen free colorants for the coloration of halogen free compounds in order to ensure compliance with halogen free regulations.

Structurally halogen free colorants might still have some very low levels of halogen impurities. This could be caused by intermediates, HCl solvents or basic NaCl salts in the water. These potential impurity levels however do not obstruct the halogen free compliance when kept at low levels The structurally halogen free pigments at common concentrations in plastics comply with the chlorine or bromine levels required by IPC4101B.

Halogen levels need to be controlled and guaranteed on the COA to ensure compliance
Even non- halogentated colorants can contain halogens as impurities, e.g.
Improper washing
Therefore, the halogen levels should be analysed and monitored and proofed. Dont buy simply by the CI#- buy certified material (LHC)

Worldwide trends
The deployment of halogen free cables is obligatory in public buildings and in areas with a high concentration of people, e.g. in tunnels, airports. Halogen free cables prevent injury to persons and damage to material assets, in the event of a fire by preventing hazardous fumes.
Material solutions
Alternatives to PVC for halogen free cables include TPE-U and TPE-E resins that offer flame retardant, halogen free and abrasion resistant technology for wire and cable applications.
Coloring solutions
Clariant offers a wide range of halogen free colorants for both resin systems

Worldwide trends
Polyamide (PA) and polyesters (PBT) are high performance engineering resins for molded articles in industrial and electrical applications. Its flame retardancy was commonly improved using brominated flame retardants. Phosphorus based Exolit flame retardants allow halogen free compounds to be produced. The use of other halogenated substances however can still avoid compliance with halogen free standards

Epoxy resins
The substrate most commonly used in printed circuit boards is a glass fiber reinforced (fiberglass) epoxy resin with a copper foil bonded on to one or both sides.
PCBs made from paper reinforced phenolic resin with a bonded copper foil are less expensive and are often used in household electrical devices.
