ASAE S380 JAN01 Test Procedure to Measure Mixing Ability of Portable Farm Batch Mixers

American Society of Agricultural Engineers

ASAE is a professional and technical organization, of members worldwide, who are dedicated to advancement of engineering applicable to agricultural, food, and biological systems. ASAE Standards are consensus documents developed and adopted by the American Society of Agricultural Engineers to meet standardization needs within the scope of the Society; principally agricultural field equipment, farmstead equipment, structures, soil and water resource management, turf and landscape equipment, forest engineering, food and process engineering, electric power applications, plant and animal environment, and waste management. NOTE: ASAE Standards, Engineering Practices, and Data are informational and advisory only. Their use by anyone engaged in industry or trade is entirely voluntary. The ASAE assumes no responsibility for results attributable to the application of these ASAE Standards, Engineering Practices, and Data. Conformity does not ensure compliance with applicable ordinances, laws and regulations. Prospective users are responsible for protecting themselves against liability for infringement of patents. This standard may be designated ANSI/ASAE. If so, this standard is an American National Standard. Approval of an American National Standard requires verification by ANSI that the requirements for due process, consensus, and other criteria for approval have been met by the standards developer. Consensus is established when, in the judgment of the ANSI Board of Standards Review, substantial agreement has been reached by directly and materially affected interests. Substantial agreement means much more than a simple majority, but not necessarily unanimity. Consensus requires that all views and objections be considered, and that a concerted effort be made toward their resolution. CAUTION NOTICE: In the case that this standard is an ANSI/ASAE standard, this American National Standard may be revised or withdrawn at any time. The procedures of the American National Standards Institute require that action be taken periodically to reaffirm, revise, or withdraw this standard. Purchasers of American National Standards may receive current information on all standards by calling or writing the American National Standards Institute.

ASAE S380 JAN01

Test Procedure to Measure Mixing Ability of Portable Farm Batch Mixers

Developed by the ASAE Animal Feed Processing Implements Subcommittee of the Power and Machinery Division Standards Committee; approved by the Power and Machinery Division Standards Committee; adopted by ASAE as a Tentative Standard December 1975; reconrmed December 1976, December 1977, December 1978, December 1979; reclassied as a full Standard March 1981; reconrmed December 1985, December 1990; reafrmed December 1995; reafrmed for ve years January 2001.
the mixer. Fifteen samples shall be taken, one 15 s after unloading begins, one when a 0.7 m3 (5 bu) or less is still in the tank and the remaining equally spaced between. 3.4 Sample size. The sample size shall be at least 150 g (5.3 oz) for salt and at least 4000 g (8.8 lb) for shelled corn. 3.5 Analysis of samples 3.5.1 Salt tracer analysis. The salt may be measured by a laboratory using a chemical procedure. The salt may be measured by any other documented reliable method. Documentation of measurement reliability must be included in the report. 3.5.2 Shelled corn tracer analysis. The corn shall be measured by sifting through a sieve. The sieve must be a size that allows all of the ground corn to pass through and retains all but 0.25% of the whole kernel corn. 3.6 Method of reporting. The following must be reported in the results of the test performed. 3.6.1 Machine model, size and serial number. 3.6.2 Date test performed. 3.6.3 Measure of mixing ability as expressed by a coefcient of variation for each of the tracers. 3.7 Sample calculations for coefcient of variation

1 Purpose and scope

1.1 The purpose of this Standard is to dene a uniform test procedure and measurement to evaluate the mixing ability of on the farm, portable batch mixers. 1.2 This Standard is applicable to batch mixers mixing dry granular ingredients of different particle size and density. The test shall consist of measuring the mix of an ingredient of smaller particle size and/or one of larger particle size with one base material.

2 Performance criteria
2.1 The performance criteria is the uniformity of dispersion of the ingredients throughout the entire batch.

3 Test procedure
3.1 Test formula. The formula for testing the performance of a batch mixer shall consist of a mixture of 0.5% salt and/or 5.0% whole kernel shelled corn by weight mixed into a base material of ground shelled corn, U.S. Grade No. 2 of less than 14% moisture. The base material, corn, shall be ground to a neness of a log mean diameter within 0.90 to 1.30 mm and a logarithmic standard deviation of 2.50 or less (see ASAE Standard S319, Method of Determining and Expressing Fineness of Feed Materials by Sieving). Most hammer mills should obtain this grind with a 9.7 mm (0.38 in.) screen. The salt tracer shall have a log mean diameter of within 0.35 to 0.55 mm and a logarithmic standard deviation of 1.75 or less. The whole kernel corn tracer shall have no more hulls and cracked kernels than allows 2.5% to pass through a 4.70 mm (0.185 in.) screen. 3.2 Mixing procedure. The mixing procedure shall be the same as that recommended to the customer by the manufacturer such as optimum mixing time and batch size. The exact mixing procedure used to obtain the results for this standard test procedure shall be reported. This shall include: 3.2.1 Sequence when ingredients were added. 3.2.2 Machine location where ingredients were added. 3.2.3 Mixer speed such as full rated speed or portion thereof. 3.2.4 Tracer, if only one is used. 3.2.5 Total time tracer element(s) was circulated in mixer including grinding time and circulating time after mixer is lled. Both times shall be reported if two tracers are used. 3.2.6 Mixer speed while unloading; such as full rated speed or portion thereof. 3.2.7 Batch size by weight. 3.2.8 Percentage of full tank. 3.3 Method of sampling. Samples shall be taken from the discharge of
