Eligibility
Australia Awards in Africa (AAA) is an ambitious Australian Government initiative to promote development in Africa through a large-scale program of development scholarships and fellowships. Over the past three years, the number of development scholarships available for African professionals has increased ten-fold to a total of 1,000 per year. Onequarter of Australias development scholarships are now directed to Africa. Long-Term Awards are postgraduate scholarships that lead to an academic qualification from an Australian university. The objective of the Awards is to provide high-quality education and training to talented Africans who will be in a position, on their return home, to make an important contribution to national or regional development. For studies commencing in 2014, Long-Term Awards are available to eligible applicants from 34 African countries.

To be considered for a Masters-level Award, applicants need to hold an undergraduate degree and be employed in a field relevant to their countrys national development priorities. The applicants employer must endorse the application. In most eligible countries, Awards are available to applicants from the public sector, civil society organisations and the private sector. Strong applicants whose English language ability is not of the level required to succeed in academic study in Australia may be entitled to English language training before leaving for Australia to take up an Award. A small number of the most outstanding Masters-level applicants may also be selected for an Australian Leadership Award Scholarship (ALAS), a supplementary award that provides access to opportunities to enhance leadership capability. Selection for an ALAS is highly competitive and is based on candidates professional and personal qualities, academic achievement and, most importantly, their commitment to contribute to development outcomes for their country and for Africa.
