2013 NGLI: Target 2030 Application Process

NGLI: Target 2030 seeks to honor and challenge young clergy who demonstrate significant potential and have accepted the high calling to parish ministry, who view parish ministry as a career path, and are willing to make a long-term commitment to service in congregational settings of the United Church of Christ. I. Requirements Criteria for selection falls into three main categories, which are summarized below: Basic Requirements The ideal candidate will: 1. Be 35 years of age or under at the point of admission to NGLI: Target 2030 2. Have served a total of five years or less as a called pastor in United Church of Christ parishes 3. Hold a called position of 25 hours per week or more in a parish setting 4. Be authorized for ministry in and on behalf of the UCC by an Association/Conference 5. Be committed to long-term ministry in local churches of the United Church of Christ Professional Development Candidates will: 1. Be committed to the culture of the United Church of Christ 2. Have exposure to various settings of the United Church of Christ 3. Be able to articulate a personal mission/purpose statement for leadership in a parish setting 4. Demonstrate experience in and love for the local church 5. Demonstrate ability to think critically 6. Demonstrate capacity to think creatively when confronted with complexity, new ideas, shifting paradigms, and challenging situations 7. Have an excellent command of language both written and verbal 8. Have experience with team building, conflict utilization, and theological reflection 9. Be conversant with various approaches to enliven congregational mission 10. Have familiarity and facility with twenty-first century communications technologies Personal Traits Candidates will: 1. Be persons of faith 2. Be trusting, trustworthy, and able to engender a sense of trust in others 3. Demonstrate emotional and spiritual maturity appropriate to their age 4. Be persons of integrity what you see is what you get 5. Have a lifestyle committed to well-being in body and spirit 6. Be able to deal with pressure 7. Be open to expressions of diverse ideas and relationships with people of diverse backgrounds 8. Be able to think on their feet 9. Be vigorous and enthusiastic about life and ministry 10. Be resilient and persevering

11. Be teachable 12. Be self-confident without being self-centered 13. Application Part 1: Notice of Intention to Apply Deadline March 15, 2013 The notice of intention to apply should be submitted in Microsoft Word Format as an email attachment to target2030@pbucc.org. The notice should include the following: A. Complete contact information Mailing addresses for office and home Telephone numbers Email addresses Presence on Social Media Facebook, Twitter, Plaxo, LinkedIn, etc. (please provide your user name) B. Ministerial Standing Form (Ordained, Licensed, Member in Discernment, OMPS, other) Dates Association/Conference Ecclesiastical Endorsements if any C. Educational Background Include dates of attendance, graduation(s), majors and concentrations (full/part-time). D. Description of Continuing Education Programs in which you have participated: title, location, sponsor, dates and a descriptive sentence or two about each E. Copy of UCC Ministerial Profile Applicant should request a copy be forwarded from UCC/LCM/MESA (Ministerial Excellence, Support and Authorization Team) to The Pension Boards, in care of the Director of Ministerial Assistance. * Note: If your background check is out of date, MESA will not forward your profile. If that is the case, please ask your Conference to submit your latest profile or submit a copy from your personal file.

If you have answered "no" to any of these questions, please explain: Part 2: Video Application Deadline April 19, 2013 Video applications should be submitted via private link on Vimeo. While the technical quality of the video is important, it is not as important as the quality of your responses. It is helpful that there be adequate sound and lighting so the Selection Committee can fully evaluate your application. Application to NGLI: Target 2030 will include a 20- to 30-minute video during which the candidate will address the following: 1. Describe your sense of call to ministry and your passion for the parish setting. 2. What is your personal mission/purpose statement for your life? How do you see yourself currently working with the congregation where you serve to develop its mission/purpose statement and core values? 3. What drew you to the United Church of Christ and what keeps you within this faith family? 4. Choose one Biblical text and describe how it has influenced and shaped your understanding of ministry. 5. What leadership lessons have you learned through the years that have proven valuable in your ministry? 6. Describe the congregation in which you are serving, or if you have not yet to begun, the congregation where you currently participate. 7. Describe the most pressing challenges facing Christian congregations today. 8. Describe NGLI: Target 2030. Why do you wish to participate and how do you anticipate it will equip and strengthen your ministry? 9. Why should the Selection Committee offer you an invitation to participate in the Class of 2024? III. Application Time Line Notice of Intention to Apply Due by March 15, 2013* Video Application Due by April 19, 2013 * Phone, Web, and/or Face-to-Face Interviews may be conducted at the discretion of the selection committee during the Summer of 2012 Decisions Announced by August 1, 2013 Orientation of New Class at Church House in Cleveland Late August 2013 Covenant of Shared Responsibility Due October 14, 2013 (Sample available at www.pbucc.org) *Note: These are hard deadlines. Extensions should not be expected.
