Protect yourself
What is HIV?
HIV is an abbreviation for the Human Immunodeficiency Virus.
Disease prevention and treatment: If you think you could have HIV or a sexually transmitted infection (STI) get tested. Know your status and protect yourself and others
Know your partners HIV status. Talk about HIV and other STIs with any new partner before you become sexually involved. Worldwide, most people who get HIV are infected via heterosexual intercourse. Prevent blood-to-blood transmission: Avoid using any skin piercing instruments (needles, razors) unless you know that they have been adequately sterilized. Sterilized, disposable, singleuse instruments are best. Avoid direct contact with blood. Use appropriate protective equipment (e.g. gloves) if you come in contact with blood. Be cautious about blood and blood-product transfusions, especially if they may not be adequately screened.
What is AIDS?
AIDS is an abreviation for Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome. AIDS makes the bodys immune system too weak to fight off infections. HIV is the virus that causes AIDS
HIV Testing
Remember: Testing does not protect you from HIV it is what you do between tests that matters For most HIV infected people it can take between 2 and 12 weeks to develop enough antibodies to get a positive result (sometimes up to 6 months) The HIV test is a blood test Counseling is important to understand and learn more about HIV/AIDS - before and after your test
HIV can also be transmitted through: Transfusion with contaminated blood or components (much more likely if blood is not screened) Shared syringes and needles Acupuncture, tattooing and ear/body piercing can only transmit HIV if instruments have NOT been sterilized.
The usual blood test determines whether someone has HIV by detecting antibodies. Some special tests can measure the HIV virus itself
