foreword
What would the society of the future look like without sciences that are able to anticipate and react rapidly to intellectual and technological challenges? What will sustain it without talented and responsible engineers, capable of both rigor and creativity? These are the issues to which we wish to make a significant contribution. The Ecole Polytechnique Fdrale de Lausanne is a world-class institution, consistently in the top 20 in most scientific and technical rankings but this is not the whole story. Our school, which has existed in its current form since 1969, blends its recently established history with a long tradition of Swiss excellence. Today, EPFL is a campus with more than 8,000 students albeit on a human scale and a high-tech institution with a reputation for basic research, as well as for its contribution to the great scientific and environmental adventures of tomorrow. We benefit from a special kind of environment. That of Lake Geneva, one of the most cosmopolitan areas in Europe, on whose shore stands our main campus. And an entrepreneurial dynamic, exemplified by the 20 or so start-up directors, students, graduates and young scientists, who each year launch their companies on to the market. No better example of this than Daniel Borel, the former graduate of EPFL who created Logitech the giant of the computing mouse more than 30 years ago. And finally, a spirit of openness, expressed by the magic waves of our flagship building, the Rolex Learning Center: a new kind of library and living space for our students who come from all over the world. An astonishing space where it feels good to work and socialize, and which stimulates the imagination. This is just as well. Because youre going to need your creativity, as much to complete your Master studies reputed as being demanding as to make a good start to your professional life. Our teachers, who spend their time between their laboratories and lectures, are there to help you in this respect. Numerous services are at your disposal including valuable coaching and advice programs. With your first diploma in hand, you have an opportunity to build your future. If you see EPFL as the next destination for your Master studies, you can be assured that, in choosing Lausanne over other renowned destinations across the world, you are opting for a very particular philosophy, marked by futurism and humanism. A youthful spirit within a secular tradition.

Tailor-made curricula
Language
Although the official language of the Lake Geneva area is French and some Masters programs are French-based, most courses at the Master level are taught in English. Updated information about the teaching language of each Master program is available on our website.
A Specialization consists of a set of courses allowing students to gain deep knowledge in a specific sub-domain of their discipline (Major). A Specialization requires obtaining an additional 30 ECTS credits. A Minor consists of a group of compulsory and optional courses offered by one or several sections (disciplines). Disciplinary and transdisciplinary Minors are designed to add flexibility and depth in the education of its engineers. Interdisciplinary Minors either tackle a multidisciplinary topic or offer complementary education to the classical engineering curriculum, thus opening up educational and career perspectives. Disciplinary Minors are open to virtually all students and they are designed with the necessary flexibility to match career goals and interests. Students have the option to choose one of these Minors as a complement to their Major. A total of 30 ECTS credits must be earned during the anticipated study period to complete a Minor. Specializations and Minors are duly mentioned in the Diploma Supplement.

Internships
All students following an engineering program need to complete an internship in a company. This placement is an integral part of the study program. It provides a practical immersion in a company of the same domain as the students training and fosters their professional development. The internship is usually done in well-known companies in Switzerland and abroad and lasts between 8 and 25 weeks. It must take place before the Masters thesis.
An outlook to research
Throughout their studies, and in particular during their Masters thesis, students have the opportunity to participate in research projects in the campus 250 laboratories and research groups. For those interested in getting involved deeper in academic research, the Doctoral School offers 19 PhD programs across the various research institutes of EPFL.
