M04EKM Assignment Developing a Masters Research Project Proposal

The Task: The preparation of a detailed project proposal as covered in M04 EKM. You may use the information generated in your logbook to help you with the assignment. Your proposal MUST include a minimum of 5 references including books and Journals. The hand in date is Monday 7th of January, 2013 by no later than midnight. You will submit this via Moodle. Although you can hand your work in early if you wish. In the following pages you will find the project proposal templates. The pink areas of the template expand and are for you to fill in. The clears areas detail how marks will be awarded.

The operating environment for airports has changed significantly in the last decade or so. The number of people travelling has shown a dramatic increase. This has led to the increase of the energy needs of the airports as a whole. At the same time, worldwide demand for the energy is growing very rapidly with the ever increasing demand from developing countries. The cost of electricity for the airports has escalated. Air pollutants from power generation and the combustion of fossil fuels has a major impact on climate change due to the emission of greenhouse gases which are considered the major contributing factor to global warming. This complex scenario of energy and environmental factors places significant economic and political pressure on airport administration to reduce energy use, and minimize the airport's environmental footprint. The airport buildings present significant importance from the energy use point of view. This is due to the architectural and structural particularities (huge glass window and high ceilings) and also the kind of usage (continuous movement of large groups of people). This makes the

airport the perfect platform for deployment of renewable power generation both in terms of available resources and for awareness rising of the technology with the public. Julius Nyerere International Airport is the main airport serving Dar es Salaam, the capital city of Tanzania. The airport is named after the first Tanzanian President, Mwalimu Julius K. Nyerere. This thesis proposal a comprehensive outlook towards an electricity system for Julius Nyerere International Airport based completely on the deployment of the renewable power generation. Its particular value is pointing out that this will be the result of an evolutionary improvement mainly of the economical, legal and regulatory framework and does not require major technological innovations. Most of the necessary technical components are already available. Hence this is a sound basis for the roadmap. Producing electricity from renewable sources is a costly process than conventional approaches, but diminishes pollution externalities although the pollution benets depend on what type of generation. Other common arguments for supporting renewable power are that it can create green jobs, energy security and driving down fossil energy (Peter F. Smith 2007). Both demand increases for electricity and security on supplying it is a very influential driver of major power sector change worldwide. Currently, for example, 90% of Tanzanias energy demand is met with imported fuels and there are possibilities that this could increase in the future to come. Economic growth and escalation use of electricity-consuming devices will increase future demand for electricity. In conjunction with demand and security of supply issues, global warming also poses a threat. According to energy researchers mankind are facing two foremost global problems in this century: global warming and energy security. Deployments of Renewable energies are the solution for both problems since they are carbon free, abundant and maintainable. The requirement for this energy revolution is both a Smart Grid to manage the volatility of decentralised renewable power generation and a Super Grid to link large renewable power plants with the energy users over long distances. (Boyle, Godfrey 2007).

Why are you interested in the project? Provide a reason for your interest, what greater general interest it serves (In Industry or as part of Research) and who it could benefit (the target audience(s) that this project would be beneficial to) This should indicate why the student is interested but also should cover the broader issues of the interest of others. My interest to this project came after comprehending that most developing countries have abundant renewable energy resources including the ability to manufacture the labor-intensive systems that connect these. By developing such energy sources developing countries can cut down their dependence on oil and natural gas, creating energy portfolios that are less vulnerable to price rises. In many circumstances, these investments can be less expensive than fossil fuel energy systems.

Renewable energy can be particularly suitable for developing countries. In rural and remote areas, transmission and distribution of energy generated from fossil fuels can be difficult and expensive. Producing renewable energy locally can offer a viable alternative. Also I have been working very closely with a German company called GSW Solar Wind LTD that proposing to establish and produce solar and wind electricity directly using photovoltics (PV) in Tanzania. I have choose to do this project because if the company get a go ahead from the government for this investment then there would be a greater opportunity for me to pursue my career within the field I like most.

What research methods do you intend to use? I intend to use both qualitative and quantitative research methods for this thesis. Since I will be visit the airport I will need the qualitative reseach method to conducts interviews to some of the staff who are working at the Mwalimu Julius Nyerere International airport. Probably interviews are the most flexible and best all-around method. Can be adapted on the fly, and cover a variety of topic simultaneously. Can be tailored to time available. Because I want to find out global and local interest on renewable power generation I will also use focus groups research method so I can gather a lot of data quickly. This method is relatively easy to plan and organise and also requires limited time commitment. I will also use quantitative method since I will be request the airport for annual reports and will try to find any published journal written for this airport.

Is there an indication of an understanding of the difference between qualitative and quantitative research? Do the students acknowledge a range of research methods to be used? Are the research methods suggested appropriate to the project? Would they be able to collect the data in the methods suggested? Do they acknowledge any problems with their research methods?

What primary and/or secondary data sources do you intend to use? The primary data collection method for this thesis will be mainly one to one interviews

through the author will collect the primary data both from airport employees and passengers. According to (Denscombe 2000) an interview is a resolute conversation between two or more people. Moreover an interview will enable the researcher to collect convincing and consistent data which are pertinent to the proposed rationale and researched question. It is important that the environment of the interview to be consistent with the research topic, objectives and purpose. Also there will be some questionnaire and surveys in order to attain accurate and most reliable data. The secondary data that will be used in this thesis will be 1. Annual report of concerned airport 2. Different articles published in journal 3. Case study
