FOR ZIONS SAKE

Editorial by Philip L. Powell
or Zions sake will I not hold F my peace, and for Jerusalems sake I will not rest, until her righteousness goes forth as brightness, and her salvation as a lamp that burns Isaiah 62:1. You heathen Christians, you let yourselves be persuaded by false teachers ... to believe that the Jews were forever disinherited and rejected by God, and that you were now the rightful Christian Israel to possess the land of Canaan forever Israels Good News (1688) by Anders Pedersen Kempe (1622-1689).1 am presently halfway through Dr Paul I Wilkinsons above titled book, which I am reading with an increasing sense of tingling excitement and delight. It is another pointer to the fact that we are fast approaching the end of history: He who testifies these things says, Surely I am coming quickly. Amen. Even so, come, Lord Jesus - Revelation 22:20.

Highly recommended, Pauls book, For Zions Sake, is one of the best documented that I have ever read see Centre Pages or enclosed CWM Catalogue for cost and order details.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

You will notice that there are no Letters Pages in CETF # 61 or # 62. This is principally for two reasons: Space Constraints Letters from readers have been a lively part of CETF from the beginning, and have increased in quantity, so it has become difficult to keep up. Gradually we plan to switch to on-line comments. Each article now appears at www.cwm.org.au where short letters can be posted. Another option is to go to http://www. christian-witness.org/blog/ find the appropriate thread, or create a new one, and post your comment. The Forum was a failed experiment and for the present is suspended.

Work Load reluctantly I have been forced to acknowledge that I must divest myself of some of my administrative activities. This is not easy to do. The Lord has enabled CWM to attract an army of volunteers, which is great. However what is now required is someone to operate full-time in an administrative role to coordinate the work. This will require faith and finance. Please pray that the Will of the Lord be done. We do not seek great things for ourselves but for HIM.

CWM CONFERENCES SEPTEMBER, 2012

Not everyone was pleased with the underlying theme of this years conferences. At least two previous CWM supporters boycotted the events based on their perception of the pro-Israel stance adopted. One wrote: I really have no heart to support land claims by unbelieving Jews in Palestine. To me, this is poor use of church resources and I would like to keep to the main game.

We agree, in part, and have always stood against any organisation that is occupied in getting Jews back to Israel without preaching the true Gospel to them. They must hear the Gospel and that is the main game. However when anti-Semitism rears its ugly head, as it is once more doing in our day, it behoves those who are true Christians to mount a defence. We do that on a biblical basis with consideration of current events. Several who attended the Brisbane Conference, after hearing the excellent talks by Paul Wilkinson and Paul Cohen told me that they had no idea things were so bad within the so-called Christian Church. Anti-Semitism is rife with some entire denominations boycotting Israel and their products. Sadly biblical Churches can become complicit by their passive endorsement of such denominations. Another correspondent wrote (in part): Ill give the conference a miss, thanks. Many aspects of CWM are much needed correctives for parts of the body of Christ today, but in my opinion this is not one of them.

The full statement appears together with my response on the CWM blog. In my opinion he was confused about the two faithful remnants, about the biblical land promise, and about the nature of our CWM Conference. Please read the full blog comments near the end of the thread - http://www.christianwitness.org/blog/2008/10/17/ gathering-the-faithful-remnant/ and feel free to leave your own comment, which will be moderated in the normal way. Any attempt at advertising will be disallowed, as will discourteous comments.

The Imperative of Effectual Payer is the last in a series of four articles (to be published in CETF # 63, God willing). written by my close friend in the ministry, dear Aeron Morgan. We are deeply grateful to him for the careful research and the biblical underpinning of his four articles. As most will know, Aeron has recently passed through deep waters having sustained an operation to remove a tumour from his brain, followed by an extensive course in radium therapy. Please pray for this genuine servant of the Lord and his wife Dinah as they face a necessary change of life-style. Aeron remains alert and active in his writing and serving his Lord. We trust he will be able to continue to write for CETF and on his own web site (http:// www.aeronmorgan.org/index. php?p=1_4_Expository-1-) and continue preaching. Finally once more I commend the contents of this CETF to your prayerful consideration. We are grateful to the Lords people for the support that enables CWM to continue publishing and distributing CETF. Thank you in the Name of the Lord. May Jesus Christ be PRAISED

Earlier in 2012 Jacob Prasch (JP) of Moriel issued a challenge to Stephen Sizer (SS), an Anglican minister who has evidenced Anti-Semitism, to an open debate. An advertisement about the challenge appeared in Challenge Weekly a Christian newspaper that circulates throughout NZ. CWM CONFERENCE BRISBANE 13th to 16th September 2012

Report by Helen Bailey NZ
The time spent worshipping the Lord, hearing Gods Word and enjoying fellowship, plus good weather for the entire Conference, made for a fulfilling and blessed time. Approximately 100 people registered with many extra day and evening visitors, and more on Saturday and Sunday. Each day began with early morning prayer, followed by four sessionstwo in the morning, one in the afternoon and one in the evening. The theme of the conference was: The Church at Christs Checkpoint. There was real expectation and an eagerness to hear the Word of God. Meetings started promptly at 9am with wonderful singing of inspiring songs and hymns, and lovely worshipful music by the musicians. The conferences main thrust was teaching the truth from the Word of God. All the messages blended well together. In the first session Philip Powell introduced all the speakers and then brought his message entitled, Walking in the Truth - the biblical checkpoint in John's gospel and epistles. The next session was by Paul Wilkinson of the UK who commenced a series on An introduction to Christian Palestinianism - Standing on the Shoulders of Goliath. He showed video clips of many well-known groups and leaders, including Christians, speaking out against Israel. His messages alerted us to the true situation in Palestine and how the entire world, including the so-called church, is turning against Israel. He reported on the Sabeel Conference in Jerusalem, where he witnessed firsthand the error being taught about Israel and the land. Later in the Conference Paul spoke at an evening meeting on The Palestinian Jesus how evangelicals are reinterpreting the Bible; and twice more on The Churchs boycott of Israel the fruit of Replacement Theology; and The set time has come (Psalm 102:13), which was the message that concluded the Conference. At the first afternoon session Lionel Letcher from Victoria spoke on Every believer, a workman before God . The church is not living what is being read or being taught. You can know the truth and still not live correctly. However to walk correctly we have to know the truth of God's Word. Lionel also spoke on Saturday evening on The spiritual believer learning to think the thoughts of God. Thursday evening meeting saw the numbers swell. Paul Cohen, director of Ariel Ministries in Australia, spoke on Daniel 9:25-26 & Matthew 16:16 Is Jesus the Jewish Messiah or only the Churchs Christ? His other messages were The King without a land is a Church without a promise and Is Israels current return to the land in Bible prophecy? The Friday morning session was taken by Laurie Cornish from NZ speaking on Learners becoming Teachers the maturing process (Hebrews 5:12-14 & 6: 2-3). He stressed the importance of disciplining new Christians and helping them become mature and strong in the things of God. Mark Mullins from the UK also spoke on Friday morning on Witnessing at Work and Leisure Salt & Light . Prior to his talk Mark had been invited to address a group of Christian Lawyers in Brisbane. Marks other message was Worshipping the Lord in spirit and truth. The only way we can worship God truly is to die to self. At the afternoon session Bob Bailey from NZ brought a message on The Ultimate Checkpoint - Crossing the finishing line. Before we reach the end it is important to have developed a relationship with the Lord based on love and truth so that we can walk triumphantly forward and hear those words Well done good and faithful servant Each speaker gave a distinctive and challenging message, based on Gods Word. We saw that it is very important for us as part of the remnant church, to realise the significance of Israel in these last days, and how urgently we need to pray for Israel. The Conference concluded with a breaking of bread service The Lords Table during which time we sang an unscheduled rendition of The Holy City. In this IT age, with recently installed broadband access to the internet at CWM-Fellowship where the Conference was held, Jeff Pitman and his musical team managed to source the words and music at short notice: Last night as I lay sleeping, there came a dream so fair, I stood in old Jerusalem, Beside the temple there. I heard the children singing, And ever as they sang, Me thought the voice of angels, From Heavn in answer rang; Me thought the voice of angels, From Heavn in answer rang: Jerusalem! Jerusalem! Lift up your gates and sing, Hosanna in the highest, Hosanna to your King!
(Words: Frederick E. Weatherly, 1892. Music: Michael Maybrick 1)

Pastor Philip Powell who is well known for his singing inability did his best in leading the congregation through all three verses, while we did our best to drown out his voice. This conference was a time of getting to know people from many parts of Australia and from New Zealand and Great Britain. The BBQ lunch put on by the church fellowship after the final meeting on Sunday afternoon, was a great time and was much appreciated. We were all greatly blessed and refreshed by the ministry and fellowship and trust that something similar can be put on somewhere next year. ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Judge Not! and You Will Not Be Judged

First in a three part series
Judge Not or Do Not Judge is an often-quoted verse of the Bible by Christians, pseudo-Christians and nonChristians alike. This is especially true in the todays neo-pagan, politically correct Western world, where judge not has been elevated to the status of the golden rule1. Similarly, the second half of the verse of Scripture, from which this phrase comes, seems to have been re-hashed into a get out of jail free card type idea. But does this verse, Matthew 7:1, say, or mean: Do not judge AND you will not be judged? them under their feet, and turn and tear you to pieces Matthew 7:6 (NAU).2 What is holy? What are the pearls? Who are the dogs and who are the swine? How will you decide what is holy and of value (Gods pearls Gods Wisdom and the Gospel), and who are the dogs and swine? What criteria will you apply? What standard will you use? What JUDGMENT will you make?3 Jesus said, Do not judge but then goes on to caution us about dogs and swine? Does He want us to judge or doesnt He? whose sole aim was to ensure that people do this and not do that. However when we look dispassionately and more deeply at these (supposed) legalistic henchmen what else do we see? Early in the morning He came again into the temple, and all the people were coming to Him; and He sat down and began to teach them. The scribes and the Pharisees brought a woman caught in adultery, and having set her in the center of the court, they said to Him, "Teacher, this woman has been caught in adultery, in the very act. Now in the Law Moses commanded us to stone such women; what then do You say?" They were saying this, testing Him, so that they might have grounds for accusing Him. But Jesus stooped down and with His finger wrote on the ground. But when they persisted in asking Him, He straightened up, and said to them, "He who is without sin among you, let him be the first to throw a stone at her." Again He stooped down and wrote on the ground. When they heard it, they began to go out one by one, beginning with the older ones, and He was left alone, and the woman, where she was, in the center of the court. Straightening up, Jesus said to her, "Woman, where are they? Did no one condemn [kate, krinen] you?" She said, "No one, Lord." And Jesus said, "I do not condemn [katakri,nw] you, either. Go. From now on sin no more" John 8:2-11. Jesus notes that the woman was not condemned/judged (kate-krinen) by anyone, and then proceeded to say that He does not condemn/judge (kata-krin) her either. Nevertheless, Jesus does tell the woman,

Modern Usage
More often than not, do not judge is now used: a) b y people who dislike having their faults addressed (irrespective of the person or attitude in which it is done), or b) b y people who dont like having their theology, interpretation of Scripture, or ideology challenged. Interestingly, the very people saying, Do not judge, are themselves judging others or what they have said, and have determined that they dont like it, or dont want to hear it. The do not judge-ers have judged others and have decided that they are right and their critics wrong. Those who would caution against judging have themselves become judges making determinations against others. The fact is, everyone judges. Indeed you are judging right now as to whether what you are reading is true or not, and whether you agree or not!

Warning About False Prophets

Beware of the false prophets, who come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly are ravenous wolves Matthew 7:15. Beware of false prophets Beware, take note of, or take care regarding false prophets. This implies assessing their prophecies and their fruits (v16-20). Again, such assessment means making a determination, making a judgment. Is this then a contradiction of Jesus statement, Do not judge? Obviously not. So what then did Jesus really mean when He said, Do not judge?

Krino
The Greek verb for judge, kri,nw (krin), can be used for technical legal decisions, but also more generally for forming judgements and reaching conclusions about both things and people. The verb is not in itself necessarily negative.4 It is only through its use and context that we can determine and understand the authors intent. How then do we understand, or even apply morals and ethics if we do not judge, even for our own sakes? When we think of judging, we think of one group of people, more than any other - the Pharisees. Pharisees tend to be thought of as legalistic bullies

Pearls, Swine and Dogs

Just five verses after Do not judge (Matthew 7:1), we read: Do not give what is holy to dogs, and do not throw your pearls before swine, or they will trample

When it came to judgment and the Pharisees, Jesus did not say, Do not judge (period). He said to judge righteously.

"From now on sin no more", thus making a moral judgement. Had the Scribes and Pharisees not brought the woman to Jesus they could have stoned her to death, based on the law of Moses. One could suggest that in spite of Jesus challenge, he who is without sin among you, let him be the first to throw a stone at her, she should have been stoned to death for her sin according to Mosaic Law.5 If we choose to be picky we could suggest that Jesus failed to fully follow the Old Testament Law by causing her not to be stoned. So, irrespective of our perceptions of the bad-old Pharisees, they had the moral integrity to recognise their own sinfulness and walk away, rather than fulfil the law. For the most part Jesus agreed with the teachings of the Pharisees, but what he did condemn the Pharisees for was: T hinking that righteousness is obtained solely by following a list of dos and donts. B eing so focused on the leaves (e.g. faithfully counting out seeds to tithe [c.f. Mat 23:23]) that they failed to see the trees (i.e. considering justice and mercy and faithfulness [Mat 23:23]). The Scribes and Pharisees had a tendency to focus on the small details and fail to see the big picture; nevertheless some occasionally got it right. One of the scribes came and heard them arguing, and recognizing that He had answered them well, asked Him, "What commandment is the foremost of all?" Jesus answered, "The foremost is, 'HEAR, O ISRAEL! THE LORD OUR GOD IS ONE LORD; AND YOU SHALL LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, AND WITH ALL YOUR SOUL, AND WITH ALL YOUR MIND, AND WITH ALL YOUR STRENGTH.' The second is this, 'YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF.' There is

no other commandment greater than these." The scribe said to Him, "Right, Teacher; You have truly stated that HE IS ONE, AND THERE IS NO ONE ELSE BESIDES HIM; AND TO LOVE HIM WITH ALL THE HEART AND WITH ALL THE UNDERSTANDING AND WITH ALL THE STRENGTH, AND TO LOVE ONE'S NEIGHBOR AS HIMSELF, is much more than all burnt offerings and sacrifices." When Jesus saw that he had answered intelligently, He said to him, "You are not far from the kingdom of God." After that, no one would venture to ask Him any more questions Mark 12:28-34. When it came to judgment and the Pharisees, Jesus did not say, Do not judge (period). He said to judge righteously. Do not judge according to appearance, but judge with righteous judgment - John 7:24. This directive from Jesus was nothing new. In the Old Testament we read: You shall do no injustice in 1. judgment; you shall not be partial to the poor nor defer to the great, but you are to judge your neighbor fairly. You shall not go about as a slanderer among your people, and you are not to act against the life of your neighbor; I am the LORD. You shall not hate your fellow countryman IN YOUR HEART; you may surely reprove your neighbor, but shall not incur sin because of him. You shall not take vengeance, nor bear any grudge against the sons of your people, but you shall love your neighbor as yourself; I am the LORD - Leviticus 19:15-18.

NEXT we will look at Jesus and Morals and the difference between Judging and Being Judgmental - etc.

End Notes;
1

he golden rule is the ethical/moral maxim: T Do unto others as you would have them do to you (Mat 7:12; Luke 6:31) All Bible quotes in this article are taken from the NAU (New American Standard, Updated 1995). Concerning the teaching in Matthew 7:6, J.C. Ryle writes, The second portion of these verses teaches us the importance of exercising discretion as to the persons with whom we speak on the subject of religion [i.e. Biblical Christianity]. Everything is beautiful in its place and season. Our zeal is to be tempered by a prudent consideration of times, places, and persons. Reprove not a scorner, says Solomon, lest he hate thee. (Prov. ix. 8) It is not everybody to whom it is wise to open our minds on spiritual matters. There are many, who from violent tempers, or openly profligate habits, are utterly incapable of valuing the things of the Gospel: they will even fly into a passion, and run into greater excesses of sin, if we try to do good to their souls; to name the name of Christ to such people is truly to cast pearls before swine. It does them not good, but harm: it rouses all their corruption, and makes them angry J.C. Ryle, Expositional Thoughts on the Gospel of Matthew (Edinburgh: The Banner of Truth Trust, 1986), 63. R.T. France, The Gospel of Matthew The New International Commentary on the New Testament. (Grand Rapids, MI: Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing Co., 2007), 274. Consider the incident in Numbers 25:6-8 when, one of the sons of Israel came and brought to his relatives a Midianite woman, in the sight of Moses and in the sight of all the congregation of the sons of Israel, while they were weeping at the doorway of the tent of meeting. When Phinehas the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, saw it, he arose from the midst of the congregation and took a spear in his hand, and he went after the man of Israel into the tent and pierced both of them through, the man of Israel and the woman, through the body. Consider the command, You shall not commit adultery (Exodus 20:14) in the Ten Commandments and consider the consequences for a virgin given in marriage to be found not to be a virgin that she should be stoned. Such is the seriousness of the sin under the Mosaic Law.

Hedonists and Martyrs

By Anton Bosch
While reviewing my study of church history recently, I was reminded of some of the things we should learn from it; but before I share those with you, I want to remind you that what normally passes for church history is the history of the apostate church (lower case c). The history of the true Church is not normally taught in Bible schools and seminaries except for a passing mention to the little groups of true believers who were thorns in the side of the institutional churches. The following are the central truths we learn from Church history: Even in the darkest hours of the last 2,000 years there have always been true believers and true Churches in this world. The real Church has always been small in numbers and poor in political power, finances and popularity. True churches and believers have always been persecuted. It is on this third point I want to dwell for a few minutes. Persecution has come from many different sources, even though the ultimate source remains Satan and his forces. The Jews, initially under the leadership of Saul of Tarsus, persecuted and killed believers beginning with Stephen. Of course Jesus was the first Christian martyr, and before the New Testament many prophets were also brutally killed by Israel because of their message. The Roman government persecuted and brutally martyred the believers for almost 300 years until Constantine in 312AD. Immediately after 312 the Roman church took over from the Roman government and began to persecute believers who did not submit to their authority. Persecution under the Church of Rome continued for the next 1700 years right up to the present, reaching its peak during the inquisition (c. 1200 to c. 1600). It is very difficult to find an accurate estimate of the numbers of people killed by the Roman church but the best studies indicate a number of around 80 million Christians in addition to witches and others killed by Rome!1 Even while Rome was killing Protestants, the Reformation leaders were torturing and killing Anabaptists and other believers who disagreed with them. Just one of many to die at the hand of the Reformers was Michael Sattler, a true believer. He was shamefully mutilated in different parts of the town, then brought to the gate, and what remained of him thrown on the fire, His wife and some other Christian women were drowned, and a number of brethren who were with him in prison were beheaded.2 Many of the Protestant leaders, including Martin Luther, engaged in the most severe and cruel torture and murder of anyone who disagreed with them, but the most vicious of all was John Calvin. In Geneva he institutionalized torture and death as a legitimate means to change peoples views and purge the church of dissenters. In addition there are the massive persecutions of Christians, many still ongoing, by Muslims, Chinese Governments, Communists and all sorts of other unbelievers right across the world. Just recently I was shocked to hear that a friend, and former colleague, as well as two women, were brutally killed and mutilated by Satanists in South Africa, making them (as far as I know) the first recent martyrs to die for the faith in South Africa. It is estimated that today3, more Christians in the world are being persecuted than are free to worship the true God. A comprehensive Pew Forum study last year found that Christians are persecuted in 131 countries containing 70 percent of the worlds population. Other studies indicate that between 100,000 and 200,000 Christians are being martyred for their faith every year4 and that around 200 million Christians are denied fundamental human rights because of their faith. All this should not come as a surprise since the New Testament is replete with statements that persecution would be the norm for Christians. In Jesus first mention about the Church he spoke of the war that would be brought against His Church. on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it. (Matthew 16:18). Paul said: Yes, and all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will suffer persecution. (2 Timothy 3:12). And Peter said Beloved, do not think it strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened to you (1 Peter 4:12). In spite of the evidence of history and the plain teaching of the Bible, the vast majority of Christians in the so-called Free World, still believe that it is the right of Christians to be popular, fairly treated and respected and that a happy life should be the norm for believers. However as I read again about how most true Christians have been mistreated and how they lived as vagabonds and fugitives throughout the last two millenia, I began to think about my own life and how easily I complain about the relatively minor inconveniences and rejection I experience because of the truth. I felt ashamed that I dare complain when thousands, right now, are experiencing the most extreme physical pain, emotional anguish and death for the sake of the Gospel. Who am I to

grumble when I am free to come and go, live in relative comfort and enjoy the company of my wife while others are in prison, being tortured and killed? I also thought about how easily many stay away from the gathering of believers because it is too hot, too cold, or they are too tired because of watching TV or partying too late on Saturday night. I struggle to reconcile this picture with the one of men and women being torn apart by dogs, their limbs pulled from their bodies on the rack and the smell of burning human flesh on the fires of the persecutors. I struggle to understand how some are unwilling to give up their sinful pleasures when millions have to give up their very lives. I struggle to understand how the pleasure-centred and self-centred Christian of the West can claim to share a common faith with the martyrs. I struggle to understand how preachers who preach a gospel of happiness, prosperity and popularity believe that their message is the same message that was preached by the faithful minority of the last 2,000 years, who like the prophets of old: had trial of mockings and scourgings, yes, and of chains and imprisonment. They were stoned, they were sawn in two, were tempted, were slain with the sword. They wandered about in sheepskins and goatskins, being destitute, afflicted, tormented of whom the world was not worthy. They wandered in deserts and mountains, in dens and caves of the earth. (Hebrews 11:36-38). Can the faith that results in persecution, torture, and death be the same faith that promises carnal happiness, a new Mercedes and popularity? Can the faith that pursues pleasure, comfort and earthly happiness be the same faith that

counts it a privilege to suffer for His name? Will the hedonist5 and the martyr share the same heaven?

CWM-Conference, Victoria September 7-9, 2012.

Report by Colm Doyle Secretary Kingsway Christian Fellowship, Glen Waverley. The Melbourne leg of The Church at Christs Checkpoint - CWM Conference got underway on Friday evening 7th September with Paul Wilkinson. Paul represents Hazel Grove Full Gospel Fellowship in Manchester, England and sits on the board of Prophetic Witness Movement International which was established by F.B. Meyer in 1917. This was Pauls first visit to Australia. His three sessions were entitled: Are you ready for the rapture? Christ or Antichrist: Who are you waiting for? and When the trumpet of the Lord shall sound. These excellent sessions covered matters such as: We stand before Christ at His checkpoint. We must check ourselves to see that we are in the faith. The Day of Jesus Christ in scripture refers to the gathering together or rapture of the Church. The Day of the Lord, when every eye will see Jesus as described in Matthew 24 is a day of terror. The word rapture does in fact appear in the Greek New Testament as Harpazo and in the Latin Vulgate as Raperent meaning to take away by force. Many are waiting for the Anti Christ instead of for Jesus. It is Jesus for whom we must look and wait. When Jesus comes many will be left behind. We learned some interesting details about the life of John Nelson Darby.

How to teach Gods good news in Easy English

By Keith Simons - PART 3 (Final)
Scripture taken from the New King James Version. Copyright 1982 by Thomas Nelson,Inc. Used by permission. All rights reserved.

HOW MUCH SHOULD A CHURCH LEADER SAY ABOUT CHRISTS DEATH? In the previous part, I showed how to teach about Christs death in a clear manner. However, there is too much information there for a church leader to explain on just one occasion. Of course, he could teach all these things at a series of meetings. If the subject were less important, then that might be the right thing to do. However, nothing is more important than a persons relationship with God. So the church leader must use every opportunity to teach what God has done by means of Christs death. The Bible declares that people must trust Christ now: For He says: In an acceptable time I have heard you, And in the day of salvation I have helped you. Behold, nowisthe accepted time; behold, nowisthe day of salvation 2 Corinthians 6:2. Again He designates a certain day, saying in David, Today, after such a long time, as it has been said: Today, if you will hear His voice, Do not harden your hearts. - Hebrews 4:7. Church leaders must therefore not delay people until some future occasion that may never happen. If God has given an opportunity to declare His good news, then the opportunity should not be wasted. Every opportunity should be used well.

Many church visitors may never return. People must hear Gods good news on their first visit, because they may never get another opportunity. The leader should arrange everything at the church and in the meeting for the benefit of visitors. He should choose songs for the meeting because of their words, and not just the music. He should train the church members to speak about Christ to visitors. There should be information at the church that the visitors can take away. The leader himself should be available to speak and to pray with people after the meeting. However, the most important opportunity to teach about Christ is during the Bible teaching in the meeting. Sometimes the speaker may even have to change his subject to help the visitors. So the leader must allow the Holy Spirit to guide him. If the leader cannot explain everything, what should he say? The answer must be: whatever will teach the people how to receive a right relationship with God. They may already know much, or they may know nothing. It may seem impossible to teach anything worthwhile to someone who knows nothing about Christ. However, in fact, many people trust Christ on the first occasion when they hear Gods good news (Acts 8:26-39; Acts 16:29-34). Their experience is genuine. God has saved them and He changes their lives. Sadly, some people attend good churches all their lives but they never trust Christ. That fact shows us that God does not save people just because of their knowledge. God saves people who trust Him.

People do not need complete knowledge of the reasons for Christs death before God can save them. However, they do need to understand that Christ died for them. Christ died for me may seem a very simple statement. It should not be difficult to teach people the meaning of those words. Of course, people need to say those words sincerely and to understand those words properly. When those words express a persons beliefs, that person has learnt several important lessons: (1) He knows that he has done wrong things against God. A person would not need Christ to die for him if he had done nothing wrong. (2) He knows that he cannot save himself. He believes that God can save him by means of Christs death. So the person realises that neither a church, nor good works, nor any human effort, can save him. (3) He realises the importance of Christs death. He understands that, because of that one event, God can change his life. (4) He knows about the love of God: In this the love of God was manifested toward us, that God has sent His only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through Him. - 1 John 4:9. Christ chose to die for that person: Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down ones life for his friends. - John 15:13.

Editorial Comment plp This brings to an end a series of three articles written in an EasyEnglish system devised by Wycliffe Associates UK, which imposes strict vocabulary and grammatical limitations on the writer. For example, there is a limitation of a 2800 word vocabulary with each word used in its simplest form and with its simplest meanings, as categorised in a Lexicon prepared for the purpose. There are other stringent rules relating to grammar, structure and length of sentences etc. Passives and idiomatic and metaphorical uses are avoided.
continued p.10.

(5) The words Christ died for me show a personal relationship with God. The person who believes that has chosen to trust Christ for himself. He does not depend on someone elses relationship with God. Also, that person does not imagine that God saves everyone, with or without trust in Christ. The church leader will probably not ask people to say the words, Christ died for me. However, he should certainly teach people to believe those words. He should do that at every opportunity. The Bible constantly tells people to trust God. They should do that because Christ died for them. The result is that they will have a right relationship with God. Because that is the Bibles main message, a speaker may choose to speak from almost any part of the Bible. So when he explains these things, he never needs to repeat the same talk. ADVICE ABOUT HOW TO BEGIN A RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD The Gospel, Gods good news, is a message with three parts. (1) Firstly, there must be a description of the true state of people in Gods estimation. Even the best people are guilty when He is their judge. All people are evil by nature and they carry out evil deeds: For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God Romans 3:23.

They deserve only punishment, but it is Gods desire to forgive: For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. - John 3:16. For the wages of sinisdeath, but the gift of Godiseternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 6:23. (2) Then, it is necessary to teach what God has done in order to forgive people. He sent His Son, Jesus Christ, into this world (John 3:16). Jesus died in order to suffer the punishment that people deserve: Surely He has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; yet we esteemed Him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted. But Hewaswounded for our transgressions, He wasbruised for our iniquities; the chastisement for our peacewasupon Him, and by His stripes we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned, every one, to his own way; and theLordhas laid on Him the iniquity of us all. - Isaiah 53:4-6. Then, God made Jesus alive again: whom God raised up, having loosed the pains of death, because it was not possible that He should be held by it.Acts 2:24. When people invite Jesus into their lives, God forgives them. God gives them a right relationship with Himself; they become the children of God:

But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name:who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. - John 1:12-13. (3) The last part is to give clear advice about what people should do. They should confess the true state of their lives in front of God. He is right to consider them guilty because of their evil thoughts, words, and deeds. They should decide that they will allow God to change their lives. That is what it means to repent. It is a complete change of mind and attitude. They should invite Christ into their lives and they should allow Him to rule their lives. They should believe the Gospel and they should trust Christ. Jesus told the people to repent and to believe the Gospel: Now after John was put in prison, Jesus came to Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdomof God,and saying,The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the gospel. - Mark 1:14-15. That is a brief way to say the same things that I have written in the paragraph above. Believe does not mean merely, Believe that it is true:

As editor I have struggled with some of these concepts, but have largely complied with the system. Wycliffe and author Keith Simons are convinced that EasyEnglish is a God-given method to reach many people across the world whose ability in the English language may be very limited. So, we sacrifice style for their benefit. However, we never knowingly make compromises with accuracy or theological truth. This series is probably the first time that anyone has published EasyEnglish articles in a standard English magazine. It has been an interesting experience for us all.

You believe that there is one God. You do well. Even the demons believeand tremble! James 2:19. Believe really means: Believe and trust. If people do not trust God, they cannot benefit from His kindness. The first Christian leaders were also careful to give this kind of advice: Then Peter said to them, Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. For the promise is to you and to your children, and to all who are afar off, as many as the Lord our God will call. And with many other words he testified and exhorted them, saying, Be saved from this perverse generation. Acts 2:38-40. Repent therefore and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, so that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord - Acts 3:19. They explained, in a clear and practical manner, how people could begin a right relationship with God. Of course they wanted them to join the church. However, without genuine belief and trust in God, joining the church will not save anyone. So the first Christian leaders emphasised that people must repent. Also, they instructed them to begin a new life where they trusted God completely. Imagine that you were visiting a church for the first time. There, you discovered that God considered you guilty. You would feel desperate and you would not know what to do about your guilt. Then, the preacher explained that Christ died

for you; and because of Christs death, God could forgive you. You would then want His forgiveness, but you may not know how to ask God for it. Suppose that the meeting ended then. You would want God to save you even before you left that place; but the church leader gave you no opportunity to invite God into your life. You did not know what to do. So you did nothing. You just continued with your life as before the meeting. Perhaps you will have another opportunity, but perhaps you will not. It is much better if the church leader explains clearly what to do. He can tell people to repent, but they may not know how to repent. He can tell people to pray, but they may not know what to pray. So it is a good idea to lead people in a simple prayer. If that does not seem right, the leader could ask all the people to say Amen at the end of his own prayer. In that prayer, they should confess their wrong and evil deeds to God. They should admit that they are guilty; only God can save them. They should thank God that Christ died for them. He suffered the punishment for their evil deeds. Then they should invite God into their lives. They should trust Him to save them.If the leader asks people to join in the word Amen, it may be right to explain its meaning. It means This is the truth; people use it at the end of a prayer to show that they agree with the prayer. In other words, they are asking God to accept the leaders prayer as if it were their own prayer. If they are sincere about that, then God will accept their prayer. The church leader should encourage people to speak to him at the end

of the meeting. Then, he can give them personal advice. We have been discussing above the advice that is needed in order to trust Christ for the first time. That advice should only be about their relationship with Christ. At that time, we do not tell people to join a church. That is not necessary for God to save a person. After people become Christians, they need more advice. They need to know how to develop in their Christian lives. So they should read the Bible and they should pray. They should find a good church that believes the Bible: Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, asisthe manner of some, but exhortingone another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching. Hebrews 10:25. There, they will find good Christian friends who can help them. They should confess to God the wrong things that they do. God will forgive them: If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive usoursins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 1 John 1:9. They should tell other people about Jesus. They should start to do Gods work, and they should show His love in practical ways. They should do this both inside the church, and among people who do not yet know Jesus: If a brother or sister is naked and destitute of daily food, and one of you says to them, Depart in peace, be warmed and filled, but you do not give them the

things which are needed for the body, whatdoes itprofit? Thus also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead. James 2:15-17. As they do these things, God will help them to become mature in their Christian lives. When people have trusted Christ, they can be confident: God is now their God. They have a relationship with Him, and He will always be with them. And so, each day, they can trust Him completely.

Falling Short Rick Warren

By Mark LR Mullins
Also know this, that in the last days perilous times shall come. For men shall be lovers of their own selves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, without self control, fierce, despisers of those that are good, traitors, heady, high-minded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God; Having a form of godliness, but denying its power: from such turn away - 2 Timothy 3:1-5. Rick Warren has become a legend in his own lifetime as a result of writing the Purpose Driven Life which has sold some 30 million copies and the size of Saddleback Church which is some 24,000 strong. He has prayed at the inaugural ceremonies of Presidents George Bush and Barak Obama. Rick Warren is considered to be a conservative evangelical holding biblical views on such matters as saving faith1, hell2(although Saddlebacks statement of faith is weak) and creationism3. It is this apparent orthodoxy in Rick Warren that has put many off his scent and led to his acceptance as a card carrying evangelical. He was appreciatively interviewed about the Purpose Driven Life by John Piper on 1st May 20114. Because he is accepted as a mainstream evangelical who has not openly denied any of the fundamentals of evangelicalism, few ask whether his teaching, behaviour and activities are actually consistent with his professed evangelical faith. (Deut 6:4), Jesus (Mark 12:29) and the Quran (Q.112:1) agree that there is only one God. However, Allah is never described as Father in the Quran, which also gives a distorted view of the Trinity, consisting of God, Mary and Jesus (Q. 5:73, 116). The term Holy Spirit refers, in the Quran, to the angel Gabriel (Q.16:102). The Quran alters the identity of Jesus. He was nothing but a prophet (Q5:75) and clearly not the Son of God (Q.9:30), for Allah does not have a son (Q.4:171).The Quran denies the death of Christ, claiming that He was not crucified but taken up alive to heaven (Q.4:157). When Rick Warren ended his prayer at President Obamas inaugural ceremony he prayed, amongst other names for Jesus, in the Muslim name for Jesus, Issa: Thus he prayed in the name of a false Christ. According to the Bible, Islam is a lie and antichrist as John put it in 1 John 2:22: Who is a liar but he that denies that Jesus is the Christ? He is antichrist, that denies the Father and the Son.

Rick Warren and Islam

Perhaps the most shocking of Warrens errors is his compromise with Islam. Along with Robert Schuller, John Stott, Yonggi Cho and Bill Hybels, Warren signed a statement from Yale University welcoming an open letter signed by 138 Muslim leaders written to leaders of the Christian faith entitled, A Common Word Between Us, which was published on 13th October 2007. It claims that love of God and love of neighbour are central to both religions5. The problem is that the Muslim letter contains statements that refer to the false belief that Muslims and Christians worship the same God: Thus despite their differences, Islam and Christianity not only share the same Divine Origin and the same Abrahamic heritage, but the same two greatest commandments.6 In the summary of A Common Word Between Us and You, we read: The basis for this peace and understanding already exists. It is part of the very foundational principles of both faiths: love of the One God. The Christian response to the letter referred to God as the All Merciful One which is a title given to Allah 57 times in the Quran7 although nowhere in the Bible is Jehovah referred to as the All Merciful One. The Quran claims that Muslims and Christians worship the same God (Q.29:46). The Old Testament

The PEACE Plan

Rick Warren is well known for the PEACE plan he initiated which involves churches connecting all over the world. A church in America would connect with a church in Africa which would connect with a church in China, and so on. The aim is apparently to unite churches so that they can help one another spiritually, financially, and socially.

Rick Warren is well known for the PEACE plan he initiated which involves churches connecting all over the world. focused on the work of the Christian church in the fulfilment of the Scriptures as represented by two passages known as the Great Commandment (Matthew 22:37-40) and the Great Commission (Matthew 28:19-20). As such, we affirm the essentials of classic Christianity such as the authority and inspiration of the Bible, the Trinitarian nature of God, and the sufficiency of Christ for salvation. We are committed to the work of the local church and in taking Christs message of faith, hope and love to a world that is lost without him. To make use of the PEACEplan. com we ask that you acknowledge this foundational context, regardless of your own spiritual beliefs. On his website the PEACE plan is broken down into the following constituent parts: (1) Plant churches that promote reconciliation; (2) Equip servant leaders; (3) Assist the poor; (4) Care for the sick; and (5) Educate the next generation. During his interview with Michael Cromartie, Rick Warren summarised his PEACE plan in the following way: And weve actually created what we call clinic-in-a-box, businessin-a-box, church-in-a-box, and we are using normal people, volunteers. When Jesus sent the disciples ... into a village he said, Find the man of peace. And he said, When you find the man of peace you start working with that person, and if they respond to

you, you work with them. If they dont, you dust the dust off your shoes; you go to the next village. Whos the man of peace in any village - or it might be a woman of peace - who has the most respect, theyre open and theyre influential? They dont have to be a Christian. In fact, they could be a Muslim, but theyre open and theyre influential and you work with them to attack the five giants. And thats going to bring the second Reformation. Here Warren sounds like he is trying to tackle world issues with the spiritual problem being his first priority. Therefore, it might appear that hes trying to promote the gospel as a priority and also help poverty, education, etc (which would be acceptable). However there is little evidence that his solution to the spiritual problem involves the gospel. His description of the person of peace in a village is confusing. He believes the man of peace could be a Muslim because that person might be most influential, and working with that person will help solve these five major problems. But he doesnt mention whether that is focused on the Christian Gospel, or by sympathizing with Islam. This is the danger with quoting scriptures out of context. In each of the passages where the Lord Jesus speaks about finding the so-called person of peace (Matthew 10:14, Mark 6:11 and Luke 9:5) the man of peace is the person who accepts the gospel (see Mark 6:12 and Matthew 9:6). Therefore the idea that Christians are furthering the gospel by working together with unbelievers is unscriptural and becomes a works based social gospel which is no Gospel at all. It is amazing how subtle this deception is. Rick Warren appears Evangelical to the core and yet is promoting a

message which is the very antithesis of The Gospel: this new reformation is a disintegration of The Gospel where works and not doctrine become the test of orthodoxy. This really brings to life Johns warning in 1 John 2:18-19: Little children, it is the last time: and as you have heard that antichrist shall come, even now are there many antichrists; whereby we know that it is the last time. They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would no doubt have continued with us: but they went out, that they might be made manifest that they were not all of us.

Leadership Conference May 2012

On 16th May 2012 Rick Warren was one of the guest speakers at a Leadership Conference held by Holy Trinity Brompton, the home of the Alpha Course where the minister in charge is Nicky Gumbel. Nicky Gumbel interviewed Rick Warren twice8. Particularly revealing were the inconsistencies that Rick Warren displayed during these interviews which on their own show him up as hypocritical, boastful and untruthful. In the first interview Warren claimed that integrity, humility and generosity were the antidotes to the temptations of the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes and the pride of life which are the common traps for leaders. He added that as a pastor there is the temptation to use your ministry to show off (pride of life).

Falling Short Rick Warren

There is no doubt that Rick Warren is right about these traps which come about if anyone, Christian leader or otherwise, loves this world more than Christ (1 John 2:15-16). pass that word on. Im going to besending out a note to pastors on what Ibelieveabout this, but everybody knows what I believe about it. However when he was interviewed by Larry King only 6 months later about his support for Proposition 8 on 6th April 2009 he claimed: I am not an anti-gay or anti-gay marriage activist. Never have been, never will be ... During the whole Proposition 8 thing, I never once went to a meeting, never once issued a statement, never once even gave an endorsement in the two years Prop. 8 was going... Saddleback Church issued the following clarification about this interview: When Dr. Warren told Larry King that he never campaigned for Californias Proposition 8, he was referring to not participating in the official two-year organized advocacy effort specific to the ballot initiative in that state, based on his focus and leadership on other compassion issues. Because hes a pastor, not an activist, in response to inquiries from church members, he issued an email and video message to his congregation days before the election confirming where he and Saddleback Church stood on this issue.11 However in the interview with Larry King he refers to the email he sent to church members but failed to mention the video which had stirred up the controversy.

(continued)

Integrity
During his interview with Nicky Gumbel, Rick Warren defined integrity as follows: I am exactly what I appear to be whether I am with my grandchildren, my children, my wife, the Queen of England, with Nicky, with you. I dont live one way with one group of people and another with another group of people. Im exactly what I appear to be all the time. Yet this is precisely the same trap that Rick Warren has fallen into himself. On 23rd October 2008, Rick Warren appeared in a video, which was posted on the Saddleback website and a link circulated to all his church members9, campaigning in favour of proposition 8 which would prevent California from redefining marriage. This is what he said10: Let me just say this really clearly. We support Proposition 8.And if you believe what the Bible says about marriage, you need to support Proposition 8. We should not let 2% of the population change thedefinitionof marriage that has been supported by every single culture and religion for 5,000 years. This isnt a Christian issue, its a humanitarian issue. So Iurge you to supportProposition 8 and

The sad thing is that the video is something to be applauded because Warren was so clear about his stand on same-sex marriage. It is a great pity that he couldnt also be clear on National TV but chose instead to back-peddle. We should very soberly recall the Lords own warning in Revelation 21:8 that the fearful and all liars will be thrown into the Lake of Fire.

Integrity/Humility
Looking at integrity and humility, it seems that Rick Warren failed to tell the truth during his interview with Nicky Gumbel as well. He stated that the Purpose Driven Life had been translated into 130 different languages. However the Purpose Driven Life website reveals that it has in fact been translated into 52 languages and is in the process of being translated into a further 1212. Why would Rick Warren feel the need to make such a boast that he would have known was untrue and which was so easy to check? He went further and claimed that the Purpose Driven Life was the bestselling book in the English Language after the Bible. Not only is this not true but it sounds very much like showing off (a failing you will recall he specifically warned against in his interview). According to Wikipedia the Purpose Driven Life has sold 30 million copies and is well down on their list of best sellers with 29 English books ahead of it which have sold between 35 and 200 million copies including such classics as The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, A Tale of Two Cities, The Lord of

the Rings and The Hobbit13. This list does not include Pilgrims Progress (at least 250 million), Foxes Book of Martyrs (150 million) and The Book of Common Prayer (150 million)14. During his interview with Nicky Gumbel he claimed that when he wrote the Purpose Driven Life he did not know it was going to be a bestseller. When interviewed by John Piper on 1st May 2011, Rick Warren claimed he only wrote the Purpose Driven Life as a workbook for his people: And so rather than writing the book and creating a campaign around it, I did it for the exact opposite. I was writing it for my people. It was only at the end that I thought an unbeliever may read this. I better throw something in here about salvation. And actually, if I had known how many unbelievers were going to read it, I would have explained salvation far much more in detail. Really, I admit, it was a cursory expression of it.15 Yet in an article in the New Yorker dated 12th September 200516, Rick Warren told Michael Gladwell that his publishers came to see him at Saddleback, and sat on the long leather couch in his office, and talked about their ideas for the book. You guys dont understand, Warren told them. This is a hundred million-copy book. Warren remembers stunned silence: Their jaws dropped.

It would appear that Warrens claim to John Piper was made partly to justify the weak gospel contained within it. Piper accepted this explanation at face value but it does not stand up to scrutiny when one considers that the Purpose Driven Life was first published in 2002 and has gone through several republications since in which there was plenty of time for Warren to amend the passages about salvation so that it was fully explained to the unbeliever. At pages 58-9 Warren writes as follows: First, believe. Believe God loves you and made you for his purposes. Believe youre not an accident. Believe you were made to last forever. Believe God has chosen you to have a relationship with Jesus, who died on the cross for you. Believe that no matter what youve done, God wants to forgive you. Second, receive. Receive Jesus into your life as Lord and Saviour. Receive his forgiveness for your sins. Receive his Spirit, who will give you the power to fulfil your life purpose. Wherever you are reading this, I invite you to bow your head and quietly whisper the prayer that will change your eternity: Jesus, I believe in you and I receive you. Go ahead. If you sincerely meant that prayer congratulations! Welcome to the family of God! (p. 58-59). This approach contrasts with the clear command to repent found in the scriptures. The gospel message that Jesus preached was to repent and believe (Mark 1:15). However there is no mention here of repentance or of the fruit of repentance which is emphasised by John the Baptist in Matthew 3:7 and demonstrated by Zacchaeus (Luke 19). It is true that Warren mentions that God wants to

forgive us but this weak presentation suggests that we are forgiven if we believe in Jesus and receive Him yet we must repent first if we are to receive Him. Secondly we are to count the cost before we receive Jesus. The Lord Jesus taught plainly about the cost of following Him (Luke 14:26-35). The rich young ruler is an example of a man who believed in Jesus but was not willing to pay the cost of surrendering his riches (see Matthew 19:21-22). During a radio interview with Michael Cromartie on 23rd May 200517, Warren began to discuss how he realised that Christians are called to help the poor as well as teach doctrine (which is a fair point), but then he expressed his surprise at failing to realise this before in the light of well-rounded education which he described as follows: And so I went back and I began to read scripture, and it was like blinders came off. Now, Ive got three advanced degrees. Ive had four years in Greek and Hebrew and Ive got doctorates. According to his biography on Saddleback he only has one doctorate, one masters totalling two advanced degrees (unless hes trying to count his bachelors as an advanced degree, which by definition it wouldnt be). He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from California Baptist University, a Master of Divinity from Southwestern Theological Seminary, and Doctor of Ministry from Fuller Theological Seminary.18

Falling Short Rick Warren

Generosity
During his interview with Nicky Gumbel, he was asked to tell the conference about his generosity which Rick Warren was ready to do (more showing off one wonders?). He claimed that he had increased his tithe every year since his marriage and now gave away 91% of his income. He also claimed that he added up his salary over the past 25 years and paid it back to the church. When asked why he had written the Purpose Driven Life, he replied that God knew what he would do with the money because he had a 25 year track record of being generous in poverty. Assuming that this is all true, one has to ask first, why Nicky Gumbel asked him about his generosity in the first place and why Rick Warren told everyone about it? Warren volunteered exactly the same information during his interview with John Piper. In Matthew 6:3 the Lord Jesus expressly warns us that when we give we are not to let even our left hand know what the right hand is doing. While talking about the Purpose Driven Life he told the conference that it took him 7 months, 12 hours a day to write that book. He went on, I was fasting till noon every day. Yet the Word of God warns us not to advertise that we are fasting in Matthew 6:16-18: Moreover when you fast, do not be as the hypocrites, of a sad countenance: for they disfigure their faces, that they may appear to men to fast. Assuredly I say to you, They have their reward. But you, when you fast, anoint your head, and wash your face; That you do not appear to men to fast, but to your Father who is in secret: and your Father, who sees in secret, shall reward you openly. In his second interview with Nicky Gumbel he claimed that God used him because he believed God more than anyone else. However, according to Romans 10:17, faith comes from hearing and hearing by the word of God. A man who believes God is therefore a man of Gods Word. As James tells us, in chapter 2, v20, faith without deeds, is dead. This is striking evidence that Rick Warren does not believe God, or if he does, he fails to do what the Lord says.

(continued)

is willing to concede that the God of Islam is the same God of the Bible in the face of the plain evidence that the God of Islam is no god at all. This is a man to stay well clear of.

Conclusion
Rick Warren is a challenge of our naivety as Christians. The Lord Himself warned us that the children of this world were wiser in their generation than the children of light (Luke 16:8). Rick Warren carries all the credentials of a sound evangelical and many Christians will look no further and simply welcome him into the fold. After all his father, grandfather and great great-grandfather (converted under Spurgeon apparently) were Baptist pastors. He plainly knows his Bible and can hold his own with the likes of John Piper in debate over doctrinal issues. However those evangelical credentials mask a much more sinister side to Rick Warren. The Lord Jesus also warned us to beware of wolves in sheeps clothing. This article documents quotes by Rick Warren that demonstrate that he does not possess the virtues of integrity and humility which he himself extols and which are the hallmarks of a genuine Christian. Instead he is found to be untruthful and boastful. His global peace plan, while holding out humanitarian aims that cannot be faulted, involves a denial of The Gospel by making good works a point of unity in place of doctrine. This is further evidenced by his compromise over Islam where he

The Fresh Prince Destined to Ruin

The Christian world has a fresh prince, not of Bel Air, but from Singapore! 1 Joseph Prince (JP) is the senior pastor of New Creation Church in Singapore, one of Asias biggest churches.2 Under Princes leadership, the church congregation has grown by more than a hundredfold from about 150 to more than 24,000. A founding member of New Creation Church, Prince initially served as an elder and associate pastor. However, his appointment as senior pastor in 1990 marked a turning point in the history of the church, which started experiencing phenomenal growth. 3 teaching sounds wonderful. But anyone with even an ounce of biblical discernment would run from such teaching. Pastor Prince believes the best in people and is committed to helping them discover how they can "reign in life through the abundance of grace and the gift of righteousness." His desire is to help this generation of believers understand the new covenant...6 His messages are all about grace to lift the heavy yoke of the law. He is strongly into the Word Faith movement, meaning his message is based on health and prosperity. Prince has changed the basic premise from faith, to grace, which has far more appeal. Because he believes the best in people he doesnt talk much about sin! He has just enough right teaching, mixed with wrong theology to be dangerous. JP has been invited to preach at a number of churches in Australia, London, USA, Canada, Norway, Netherlands, South Africa and Indonesia.7Notably, he has been invited to preach at many a Hillsong Conference, including this years (2012).8

The Pop Prince

Joseph Princes Television programme, and his books are everywhere. Prince is the new Prosperity Poster Boy.

His website boasts: A highly sought-after conference speaker, Pastor Prince has impacted church leaders internationally by preaching the unadulterated gospel of Jesus with boldness. He is known for teaching Gods Word in a fresh, practical and revelatory way that always unveils Jesus. His humorous, dynamic and engaging style of preaching has also endeared him to a wide spectrum of viewers who tune in to his daily television programme - Destined To Reign. This broadcast currently reaches millions of homes across North America, Europe, Africa, Australia and Israel on both secular and Christian networks. Pastor Prince is actively fulfilling the mandate that God has given him to preach Gods unmerited favour without compromise. Princes ministry continues to transform many lives, setting people free from the heavy yoke of the law, guilt and condemnation by pointing them to Jesus and His finished work at Calvary.

Prince, the son of a Sikh priest of Indian origin and a Chinese mother, changed his birth name to Joseph Prince from Xenonamandar Jegahusiee Singh, during his previous occupation as an IT consultant.4 His name change is reminiscent of Joseph the Hebrew Prince of Egypt. He is married to Wendy, and has two young children. As a young man he dabbled in the occult, but he said that supernatural experiences opened his eyes to Christianity.5 Rising to cult status, Prince is the new voice in the world of TV preachers, bringing a breath of fresh air, teaching his version of effortless grace, and his panoramic view of Gods love. But is this really the breath of Heaven, or is it a new wind of doctrine; a form of grace for children desiring only milk, happy with cotton candy Christianity? (cf. Eph 4:14; 1Cor 3:2; Heb 5:12 -14) For a new Christian Princes

Princes TV program Destined to Reign is broadcast in more than 150 countries.9 His broadcast programme is also streamed online through Internet and podcasts.10 Yet he has never had any formal theological training. Prince publishes books, CDs and DVDs. In 2007, he published his book Destined to Reign: The Secret to Effortless Success, Wholeness and Victorious Living, which contained teachings from his ten years of preaching from 1997 to 2007. Six months after the books US release,

it was listed as one of Christian Retailings Top 100 Books.11 In 2010, Princes latest book Unmerited Favor was published worldwide by Charisma House. 12 Joseph Prince was featured in the cover story of the June 2010 issue of Charisma magazine, which covered his preaching and teaching ministry.13 On October 29, 2011, JP ministered in the US for the first time at Lakewood Church in Houston, Texas.

and revenue. The New Creation Churchs income was reported to be SGD55.4million for the financial year ended March 2008. 17 On June 7, 2010, The Straits Times and Channel News Asia reported that Joseph Prince has not been on the church payroll since 2009.18

Prince of Prosperity
Many are becoming aware of this mans teachings. But not all that glitters is gold, as the saying goes... Here is a quote fromJoseph Prince: I give thank(s) to God for my roots in the Word of Faith teachings. It is truly on the shoulders of great men of God like Brother Kenneth E. Hagin that we are able to see further into the Word of God today. Growing up, I learned a lot about faith from Brother Hagin who truly had a special revelation of faith from the Lord. I deeply honour and respect him for all that he has taught me. 19 Princes background has certainly influenced his teaching on grace. In his sermon Walking in the undeserved favour of God, he said: Now Ive been in the Word of Faith circle and I find that Word of Faith preachers know about favour. The thing that I wish many of them would say though would be this - to use that phase - undeserved favour... Now I didnt learn amazing grace from Word of Faith though,... I had to learn that truly struggling on my own.20 The following are gleanings taken from his book - Destined to Reign. This list is the crux of Princes teachings. Nothing but blessings for the believer (p.53) No longer a need to be concerned about Gods Judgment Repentance and confession of sin is never necessary Wealth is for all Christians God is continually restoring New Truths to the church-New Revelations (p.32) Princes personal revelation from God is: More grace; less judgment Prince believes that God WILL NOT JUDGE America because of the cross. (p.49) The Moral law has no bearing on Christians today; it was abolished with the Ceremonial law. Prince says that he never encountered anyone that said now I can go out and sin because of grace(p.99) Repentance means Only to turn around or a change of mind He used to be conscious of sin, but he doesnt focus on confessing his sin/s anymore 21
continued p. 23

Effortless Income:
There have been criticisms about the size of the salary paid by the church to its senior pastor. On 5 October 2008, in an interview with the Sunday Times, JP, who is the executive chairman of the church council, acknowledged that he was well-paid but added that money did not have a hold on him.14 He dismissed the rumour that his salary was $50,000 a month.15 However, on 30 March 2009, The Straits Times reported that an investigation revealed that the independent New Creation Church paid one employee between $500,001 and $550,000 in its last financial year of 2008. 16 Under the revised and updated recommendations contained in the Code of Governance for charities, all charities and non-profit organizations in Singapore are encouraged to disclose the salary bands of their top executives to the Commissioner of Charities. Even though the church did not confirm if the amount went to its pastor, Joseph Prince. It told The Straits Times that its policy is to recognise and reward key contributors to the church and Senior Pastor Prince is the main pillar of our churchs growth

This trio of resources is invaluable for understanding the latest raging debate concerning Christian Zionism, which has been described by "Hamas" as "The greatest danger to world truth, justice, and peace," and by some in the church as "a powerful force" that "Fuels the Arab/Israel conflict" and encourages the destruction of millions of people with its "Armageddon theology". This ground breaking book challenges decades of misrepresentation and scholarship by revealing the man and his message. Paul Wilkinson vindicates Darby and spotlights the imminent return of the Lord Jesus Christ as the centre of his theology.

The Fresh Prince Destined to Ruin

Princes preaching on grace always comes back to blessing and prosperity. Its no wonder he has so many followers.

(continued)

washing them....because they are forgiveness-conscious, they experience victory over sin. 23 So every day, make it a priority to see yourself righteous in Christ. Dont be conscious of your sins. Instead, be conscious of your righteousness....see Jesus with His pierced hands and side, which speak of His finished work. See all your sins forgiven, and you will flow with peace and joy. When you do this, you are seeking the kingdom of God! 24 Princes teachings may be about grace, but he is twisting scripture to make his point. JPs message of grace is mixed with strange word faith concepts. Many who were once biblical, now completely accept Princes teachings! However many of his statements like the following are true, or partly true: The law is about you looking at yourself. The new covenant is all about you seeing Jesus. 25 Even though the law is holy, just and good, it has no power to make you holy, just and good.26 Stop trying to deserve and earn your own acceptance before God with your own works and efforts. It will only frustrate the grace of God and nullify the effects of the cross in your life. 27 Joseph Prince qualifies: People sometimes ask me, Pastor Prince, if you dont teach the Ten Commandments to your church, what is going to govern them? My friend, the Lord Himself will govern them! 28 Joseph Prince has misapplied the leading of the Holy Spirit, (cf.

John 16:13). The Lord also guides through His Word. His statements are clear indications that he teachesantinomianism. Therefore, to him who knows to do good and does not do it, to him it is sin - James 4:17. The logical conclusion is one must be aware of what is good to do it; equally, one must know what is not right, so as not to sin. Prince keeps his followers in ignorance of what God requires. Like so many he is preaching a different gospel a feel good gospel.

Royal Rhetoric
Prince continually assures the Believer that, although he does not condone sin, all was forgiven when Jesus died for the Believer. On pg 53 of his book - Destined to Reign, Prince writes: If you receive a word from someone which brings your sins to remembrance or instills an expectation of punishment for sins in your life, dont fear it, just throw it out the window... On page 45, he writes: God took all your sins, even the sins that you have not yet committed, and put them all on Jesus. All future sins have been fully judged at the cross. On pages 138, 233 and 99 respectively he states: Believers are forever righteous - you cannot be under grace without becoming holy, and that he has never encountered anyone who after receiving grace says now I can go out and sin. Really?? Dont you know of those who truly served and loved the Lord at one time and have returned to a life of sin, or at least failed the Lord at one point? JP teaches that since all sins are already forgiven, there is no need to repent of them anyway. What we need instead is to be forgiveness -conscious. 22 On page 103 of his book, he writes: Even when they (Christians) say a wrong thing, do a wrong thing or have a wrong thought.they see the blood of Jesus continually

Prince states: Have you noticed that the law entered so that sin might abound? It clearly means that the more you preach the law, the more sin will abound. After all, the strength of sin is the law. Therefore, when... you preach more of the law, you are literally adding wood to fire. 29 On the contrary the Bible makes it clear that: The Ceremonial law was fulfilled in The New Covenant by the death of Jesus Christ on the cross. We have no need of sacrifices for the forgiveness of our sins. Christ was our Passover Lamb. However, nowhere in the Bible has the Moral law been abolished.

The Fresh Prince Destined to Ruin

It is still wrong to murder, steal, commit adultery, etc. We are still obligated to keep these laws. 30 You have heard that it was said by them of old time, you shall not commit adultery: But I say to you, That whoever looks at a woman to lust after her has committed adultery with her already in his heart. Matthew 5:27-28 Jesus magnified the law. In fact, Jesus raised the laws of the Old Testament to a higher standard. If Joseph Prince is correct; then why did Jesus make the keeping of the Moral law even tougher and stricter cf. Matthew 5:22-44? It is all about Jesus and His finished work! The law justified no one and condemned the best of us, but grace saves even the worst of us(Destined To Reign p.124) Commandments Kill. 31 Although correct as standalone statements, his emphasis is at the expense of a proper understanding of The Law. Paul referred to The Law as a schoolmaster (Gal. 3:24). Its not grace replacing the law, but rather Gods grace given to fulfil the law. Prince makes the law and condemnation, not our sin, the enemy,! While Prince makes some good points to accentuate grace; one needs to read many of his quotes in their complete context. Many times his points may be true; but his application and solution are not. The main idea Prince is advancing is that through grace believers only receive blessings, they do not need to be concerned about sin, or Gods chastening. Grace has done away with the law with its judgment and punishment. Princes whole presentation is that,

(continued)

This (grace) is the secret to effortless success, wholeness, and victorious living! (Destined to Reign, p. 307); and victorious living is effortless. 32 If the path to God is effortless then why did Jesus say, Strive to enter through the narrow door. For many, I tell you, will seek to enter and will not be able - Luke 13:24 [ESV] Strive and not ALL will be able to enter! That doesnt seem effortless grace, does it?

my ministry: If you dont preach grace radically, peoples lives will never be radically blessed and radically transformed. That powerful word from the Lord jolted me, and I realized for the first time that I had indeed been preaching a grace message that was tempered with the law. I returned to my church with a strong mandate from the Lord... (Joseph Prince, Destined To Reign, pp. vii-viii). It sounds good doesnt it? Firstly, why are we relying on the voice of the Lord to teach and expound biblical doctrine? Jesus Christ supposedly told Kenneth Copeland (Word Faith teacher) in the following prophecy: Dont be disturbed when people put you down and speak harshly and roughly of you. They spoke that way of Me, should they not speak that way of you? The more you get to be like Me, the more theyre going to think that way of you. They crucified Me for claiming that I was God. But I didnt claim I was God; I just claimed I walked with Him and that He was in Me. Hallelujah. 33 (cf. Matt 26:63- 65, John 8:54-59) This is Word of Faith teaching plain and simple! Prince has admitted Kenneth E. Hagin is a strong influence, meaning JPs teaching will deny essential elements of Christian doctrine, such as Christs deity! Prince may be fairly new to the scene but the doctrine he teaches isnt something new at all, nor is it a New Revelation.Antinomianism was what the Apostles came against in the Early Church.

Prince of Dreams
To understand his position we need to learn how he was led into this teaching. Prince says in 1997 (notice early in his ministry) while on vacation with his wife I distinctly heard the voice of the Lord on the inside. It wasnt a witness of the Spirit. It was a voice, and I heard God say clearly to me: Son, you are not preaching grace. I said, What do You mean, Lord? Thats a low blow. Thats a real low blow! I added, Im a preacher of grace. I have been a grace preacher for years ... He said, No. Every time you preach grace, you preach it with a mixture of law. You attempt to balance grace with the law, like many other preachers, and the moment you balance grace, you neutralize it. You cannot put new wine into old wineskins. You cannot put grace and law together. He went on to say, Son, a lot of preachers are not preaching grace the way Apostle Paul preached grace. He then ended emphatically with this statement that revolutionized

Princes preaching on grace always comes back to blessing and prosperity, its no wonder he has so many followers.

Definition:
Antinomianism is the teaching that under The Gospel, the moral law is of no use, nor are Christians obligated to keep it.Antinomianism or legal irresponsibility is an extreme version of justification by faith alone. It does not necessarily imply the embrace of ethical permissiveness; rather it usually implies emphasis on the inner working of the Holy Spirit as the primary source of ethical guidance. 34 Prince seeks to defend himself: I have been accused of being an antinomian (someone who is against the law of Moses). The truth is I have the highest regard for the law... I am for the law, for the purpose for which God gave the law God did not give the law for us to keep. He gave the law to bring man to the end of himself, so that he would see his need for a Saviour (emphasis added). 35 Although the law was to bring an end to ourselves; What then? Shall we sin, because we are not under the law, but under grace? God forbid. Dont you know that to whom you yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants you are to whom you obey; whether of sin to death, or of obedience to righteousness? Romans 6:15,16 He condemned sin in the flesh, in order that the righteous requirement of the Law might be fully met in us, who do not live according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit. Romans 8:4 According to Joseph Prince, a Christian can accept Christ and

somehow live a life of sin and in the flesh (at least ignorantly) because he/ she is already forgiven and there is no need to live holy and blameless as the Apostle Paul admonishes us to do in 1 Thessalonians 4:7: For God has not called us for impurity, but in holiness. Therefore whoever disregards this, disregards not man but God, who has given us His Holy Spirit. Where is the need for repentance? With Princes teaching it seems there is none?

righteous, the more he will start to behave like a righteous person. It is time to awake to righteousness! 36 The Greek word for righteousness (dikais) means right living. Prince makes the term some kind of word faith confession. Righteousness Consciousness I have to ask the question, did Paul, the apostle, somehow get it wrong, that we can now thank Joseph Prince for opening up to us this NEW truth about grace? If we accept Princes grace theology as true, then Paul wouldnt have written most of the New Testament. He wouldnt have expanded his writings to the churches beyond making clear to them their position in Christ. Yet Prince tells us to Feed on the letters of Apostle Paul in order to discover the Gospel of Grace. Prince says,

Of course Prince denies this. Teachers like Prince are into political doublespeak. There are many examples that show Joseph Prince has warped the truth to build his unique grace teaching the power to overcome sin is found in knowing that you are righteous. When a believer is struggling with sin, it is a case of mistaken identity. He thinks that he is still a dirty rotten sinner...Believers are struggling with sin today precisely because they do not realize that they are righteous. The Bible says, Awake to righteousness, and do not sin. This means that the more a believer realizes that he is indeed

God does not leave you wondering whether you are saved or not. He tells you outright that you are His and that nothing can ever separate you from the love of Christ. Not even sin because His blood is greater than your sin! 37 Although hes partly correct, Prince seems to forget that sin does affect our communion with God; the blood of Jesus Christ is applied when one confesses, and turns from sin, just as in salvation. Love demands that we tell the truth to people when they have done wrong. God is no different. He wants truth, not just grace.

The Fresh Prince Destined to Ruin

Joseph Prince states: Colossians 2 tells us we are already made perfect in Christ. We dont work towards perfection. Christ has made us perfect from the Cross. The minute you believe you are made perfect in Christ. You work from your perfection not to it. 38 In Philippians 3: 9-16, Paul teaches that he possesses the righteousness which is of God by faith..., yet he has not already attained, nor [is he] already perfect (v12). He is seeking to know more of Christ. Yet in verse 15 he concludes, Let us therefore, as many as be perfect, be thus minded... (cf. James 1:3-4;1 Peter 5:10). Matthew Henry makes this point: Those who think they have grace enough give proof that they have little enough, or rather that they have none at all; because, wherever there is true grace, there is a desire of more grace, and a pressing towards the perfection of grace. 39 Prince it seems is unable to reconcile such apparent contradictions. The more they believe that they are righteous, the more they experience true victory over sin... You see yourself righteous and this gives you the power to rise above the temptation. 40 Knowing that you are completely forgiven destroys the power of sin in your life now 41 Knowing you are forgiven before you do something wrong can give you a freedom to do whatever you want, and here is where the accusations of antinomianism surface. Rom 8:1 actually says there is no condemnation to those in Christ

(continued)

Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit cf. verse 4. In other words being obedient, yielding and submitting to God, putting to death your members, and living by the Spirit, are the keys, not by some blanket gift of no condemnation cf. Colossians 3:5; Romans 6:15-19. Prince gives us a formula for not sinning by repeating the phrase I am the righteousness of God in Jesus Christ. Clearly Prince is promoting some sort of Word Faith righteousness consciousness1. Where is the power of the Holy Spirit? Where is dying to self? Herein is the contradiction. At the same time he tells people to confess righteousness, he also tells people not to confess their sin, but the Bible explicitly states the opposite. JP says, Beloved, confessing your sins all the time will only make you more sin-conscious. But knowing that you are under Jesus waterfall of forgiveness will keep you forgiveness-conscious... 42 Its the acknowledging of our sin that brings Gods cleansing, and he that is begotten of God keeps himself from sin (1John 1:7-9; 1John 5:18). Prince erroneously promotes that

confession is only needed once at conversion. God somehow forgives us continuously and perpetually under waterfalls of forgiveness? Again from his book Destined to Reign: For generations, the body of Christ has been defeated and put under a constant siege of condemnation from the accuser because they believe wrongly that the Holy Spirit convicts believers of their sins. 43 Here Prince explains what, in his opinion, has eluded almost all believers for centuries, that the Holy Spirit does NOT convict believers of their sins? The Holy Spirit came to convict of sin, righteousness, and judgement. (John 14:17;16:7-12). Without Him we remain in spiritual darkness. This in itself is clue enough that Prince is teaching error! The New Birth is but a beginning; like a baby we must continue to grow. Wherefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling. For it is God which works in you, both to will and to do of his good pleasure. - Philippians 2:12-13 (cf. Hebrews 13:21) Paul writes in 1Tim. 4:7 exercise yourself toward godliness. Gr: gumnazo - exercise; a discipline, to train like a boxer, or an athlete. Notice we work, and the Lord works in us. The Holy Spirit leads us to salvation and redemption, but will not do it alone. We must co-operate with Him. He wants us to participate with Him in sanctifying our lives. This is the communion of the Holy Spirit.

1Righteousness consciousness is a term coined by Joseph Prince to signify being conscious that you are righteous. The idea was taught by E W Kenyon and Kenneth Copeland, both Word Faith Teachers. Sin Consciousness was supposedly fostered by ministers who preached sin instead of preaching Christ and The New Creation. Their righteousness of Christ is something that is not so much imputed to the believer but rather, it is something that is imparted to our spirits. Thus they view themselves as now righteous beings and not sinful beings who undeservedly have been granted to share in the righteousness of the Son of God. This is serious error and in fact heresy.

Where is the need for repentance? With Princes teaching it seems there is none?

Therefore, brethren, be even more diligent to make your call and election sure, for if you do these things you will never fall; for so an entrance will be supplied to you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ 2 Peter 1:10,11. The scripture exhorts us to be diligent, giving heed, to add to our faith virtue. None of this comes automatically from grace. We have this instilled in us by the Holy Spirit, and we must co-operate with His work in conforming us to the Son. These are added as we grow in both knowledge and faith. The Churches of Sardis and Laodicea are clear warnings against casual Christianity. (Revelation 3:1-5,14 -21) Many are building their faith on shifting sand, on Princes message of ALL grace, and no responsibility. Prince of Hyper-Grace The missing element in Princes grace mantra is sanctification. Our sanctification began when we were justified, but sanctification is a continuing work. For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to good works, which God has before ordained that we should walk in them - Ephesians 2:10. For this is the will of God, even your sanctification, that you abstain from fornication 1 Thessalonians 4:3. Yet Prince states You are either righteous or you are not. There is no such thing as first having positional righteousness and then having to maintain that through practical righteousness. You are the righteousness of God in Christ, period! 44

The sad fact is this extreme heresy is spread abroad across our land today proclaiming a Saviour from hell, but not from sin. It preaches a salvation of forgiveness but not redemption from sin. It teaches a form of justification by faith but not sanctification by faith. It preaches, You must be born again but doesnt teach the marks of true regeneration. It teaches that a man becomes a new creature in Christ, while he remains just the same. Do JPs disciples truly believe Gods grace can be this lopsided? Princes grace is hyper-grace - all of God, and nothing of us. Princes positive thinking, positive confession paradigm is what he propagates. JP claims that sin, law, repentance, conviction, are negative, so they are excluded, and rejected from his message. And you, that were once alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now has He reconciled. In the body of His flesh through death, to present you holy and blameless and irreproachable in His sight: If you continue in the faith grounded and settled, and do not be moved away from the hope of the gospel, ... Colossians 1:21-23. Yet if Prince produced his own Bible you would read, He has reconciled us; In the body of his flesh through death, to present you holy and blameless and irreproachable in his sight, and thats where it would stop. To quote Martyn Lloyd Jones: I need something further [than being delivered from guilt and punishment]. I need a positive righteousness [by living in accordance with Gods moral law]. I cannot stand in the

presence of God by means of the forgiveness of sins only; I need a positive righteousness [an actual righteousness; and ... this is the dominant use of the word righteousness in the Bible], the righteousness that the Law postulates [demands, requires]. The second element in salvation, therefore, is that I am clothed with the righteousness [the actual righteousness] of Jesus Christ. ... In verse 3 [Rom. 8:3], the Apostle tells us how God delivers us from the guilt of sin [verse 3 definitely includes His setting us free from the authority and power of sin, from the kingdom of sin]; in verse 4 He gives us the positive righteousness, and how He will go on doing this increasingly through the work of the Spirit in sanctification until we are ultimately glorified, and free from sin altogether45 Martin Lloyd-Jones continues: In other words, the righteousness of the Law is fulfilled in us in two ways. The righteousness of Christ is imputed to us [positional, legal righteousness]; but, thank God, the righteousness of Christ is also imparted to us. 46 Martin Luther wrote: It is just as impossible to separate faith and works as it is to separate heat and light from fire! (cf. James 2:14 -23) 47 Prince takes the position that God actually made us righteous already, therefore sanctification is seemingly unnecessary. But you have not so learned Christ; If indeed that you have heard him, and have been taught by him, as the truth is in Jesus: That you put off concerning the former conduct the old man, which is corrupt

according to the deceitful lusts; And be renewed in the spirit of your mind; And that you put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness - Ephesians 4:20-24.

(continued)

If you are a justified person, that person begins to be a sanctified person.

Prince of Preachers

Both are necessary to salvation!

In closing, lets have the scriptures speak for themselves: No one ever reached heaven without a renewed heart, as well as forgiveness, without the Spirits grace as well as the blood of Christ, without being ready for eternal glory as well as a title. The one is just as necessary as the other. Ryle continued I am persuaded that one great cause of the darkness and uncomfortable feelings of many well-meaning people in the matter of religion is their habit of confounding, and not distinguishing justification and sanctification. It can never be too strongly impressed on our minds that they are two separate things. What practical reflections ought the whole matter to raise in our minds? For one thing, let us all awake to a sense of the perilous state of many professing Christians. Without holiness no man shall see the Lord; without sanctification there is no salvation (Heb.12:14). Then, what an enormous amount of so-called religion there is, which is perfectly useless! For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men, Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world; looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ; Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify to himself a special people, zealous for good works Titus 2:11-14. Notice what is the true grace of God that brings salvation? This is not the grace Joseph Prince teaches. Joseph, the Prince of Egypt knew suffering and humiliation, nothing that this fresh Prince seems to identify with. He believes its all about reigning now. Yet the Bible promises that we will reign with Christ [then], IF we first suffer with Him [now] cf. Gen 39:20, 40:23 with 2 Tim 2:12. The pendulum has swung so far that it seems enough for us that our Christianity consists of having Christs righteousness accounted to us, without His righteousness being worked in us. Princes odd position is what we may dub juvenilia49 justification, a youthful hybrid of Word of Faith teaching, and half a Gospel. He suggests a simple prayer:

The scriptures declare: For you are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God. .... Put off the old man, and put on the Lord Jesus Christ (see Col 3:3, cf. verses 8-10). Instead, Prince is giving us a replacement theology of fancy catch phrases, and Word of Faith metaphysics. We need to understand there is a distinction between justification and sanctification. The following outline is taken from the writings of J.C. Ryle, on Holiness. 48

In what ways are they alike?

Both proceed originally from the free grace of God. It is of His gift alone that believers are justified or sanctified at all. Both are part of that great work of salvation which Christ, in the eternal covenant, has undertaken on behalf of His people. Christ is the fountain of life, from which pardon and holiness both flow. The root of each is Christ. Both those who are justified are always sanctified, and those who are sanctified are always justified. God has joined them together, and they cannot be put asunder. Both begin at the same time.

Yet Prince states You are either righteous or you are not. There is no such thing as first having 'positional righteousness' and then having to maintain that through 'practical righteousness.' You are the righteousness of God in Christ, period!

Lord Jesus, thank you for loving me and dying for me on the cross Your precious blood washes me clean from every sin. You are my Lord and my Saviour, now and forever. Because of your finished work, I am now a beloved child of God.50 His message at its core is a sophisticated form of Universalism, packaged as Gods Grace; but its cheap grace, and harbours a false peace! Prince, ignorant of Gods righteousness, is establishing his own. cf. Romans 10:3. Sanctification somehow happens through righteous consciousness? Joseph Princes followers are asleep to real righteousness, right living, destined to be ruined by his grievous gospel (cf. Acts 20:29,30). Although on an evangelical mission, Prince is following the broad path of the Emergent Church, with its dubious doctrine, and moral ambiguity. The only difference is his teaching is tailored to a more biblically familiar audience. Prince holds to a gospel of Christ which makes Gods law of no effect: believing we are released from the necessity of being doers of the Word. This is part of the ancient heresy of the Nicolaitans, which Christ so unsparingly condemned in the book of Revelation (Revelation 2:6,15-16). 51 Prince is drawing away disciples through the success franchise of celebrity, prosperity and easy believism. No surprise really! At the time of writing this article, Hurricane Isaac was bearing down on New Orleans on the eve of the seventh Anniversary (August 29, 2005) when Hurricane Katrina slammed onto the coast.52

Prince said, God would not judge America! Southern Decadence, the largest gay and lesbian street festival held each year in New Orleans (this year, Aug 29 - Sept 3, 2012) are planning to rave on regardless. Although Hurricane Isaac cancelled remembrance ceremonies for those killed by Hurricane Katrina, one of the event co-ordinators, said that no hurricane was going to stop the festival. 53 When Homosexuality begins to dominate a culture, its clear evidence of divine judgment (Rom 1:27, 32). Isaac in the Hebrew means laughter or He laughs. I wonder who will have the last laugh (Psalm 2:4-5)? The mission statement from Princes New Creation church is to see Jesus in all the loveliness of His Person, and the perfection of His work, and to make Him known through the preaching of the gospel.54 Prince is preaching a different Jesus, another gospel...and although hes articulate, charismatic, convincing, and preaching grace; he is a blind leader of the blind, leading astray the unlearned and unstable. He is at best a false apostle, and at worst a conniving HERETIC! (2 Corinthians 11:12-15; 2 Peter 3:16).

THOUGH WE WITH GIANTS FIGHT LIVES AND TESTIMONIES FROM THE BATTLEFIELD
By Philip Bray
C.H. Malan, Officer and Evangelist - A Soldiers Experience of Gods Love and Faithfulness Part 1 Full Free and Eternal Forgiveness In July 1857 Captain Charles Hamilton Malan boarded a Royal Navy ship bound for India, where the Indian Rebellion had begun two months previously.1 Such sea-journeys could last well over a year and were often full of adventure. However, this journey started so smoothly that some of his fellow officers actually began to complain; it was more like a coastal cruise than the adventure they all anticipated. This quickly changed when the ship was suddenly hit by gale force winds, which shredded the topsails before the crew could lower them. The masts were snapped off as twigs, and the ship listed hard. For a moment, it seemed that the ship would not correct itself, and that they would be lost. As Adjutant, Malan was responsible for the prisoners and their guard, and having seen to his duties took up position on deck next to the Captain; it took all of his strength just to hold on. The Captain lent over and with cupped hands shouted into his ear, you are in greater danger now than ever you were at Sebastopol. If the foresail goes, we shall all go to the bottom. 2 Malan was commissioned into the 7th Fusiliers City of London Regiment, and later the 75th Stirlingshire Gordon Highlanders. His early years of service in the Army were eventful. In his first appointment in command of a platoon of 30 men he fought in the Crimean War and narrowly escaped death at the Battle of Sebastopol. Many of his unit were killed, including both his Commanding Officer and Adjutant. He was a religious man. He read the Bible every day and strived to obey it. In truth he was attempting the impossible; he was trying to be accepted by God on the basis of his own obedience. In the midst of the storm, when the ships survival hung in the balance, Malans eyes were opened. Surveying a scene of devastation he realised that he was not only in physical danger, but also in eternal danger. I saw death, judgment, and eternity before me as I never before had seen them. I also saw in the raging of the wind and sea more of His power against Him to whom I knew myself to be a sinner.3 Finally, the storm passed and the ship and her crew escaped. However, the impression on Malans heart remained. When a brother officer invited Malan to pray with him in his cabin to give thanks to God for their deliverance, Malan eagerly accepted. Kneeling down, he fervently confessed his sin, and sought for the Lords mercy, and in due time I received pardon and peace ignorant as I was, I asked and sought, and I did not do so in vain.4 He left the cabin a new man. Like the calm that followed the passing of the storm, Malan had an inner peace that Gods anger had also passed from Him. He described it as, the peace of free, full, and eternal forgiveness of sins through the blood of Christ.5 Malan arrived in India just before his 21st birthday, newly promoted, newly converted and zealous to serve the Lord. This presented him with a choice; should he resign his commission and return to testify to his friends in Britain of his new faith in Christ, or stay in the Army? He decided to stay.

Joy Throughout Heaven

After a few years service in India, Malan fell ill and was sent back to England to recover. Since becoming a true Christian a natural desire had developed in Malan to speak to people about Christ. I was early warned not to delay in giving to my men the message of eternal life which God had given to me for them. This I did after I had made the necessary arrangements for discipline and comfort. What encouragement the Lord gave me the very first day! It was in the afternoon. I went below. Both sides of the deck were lined with beds filled with sick and dying men. After speaking a cheery word to each of them about their health or regiment, I said, Comrades, let me read to you the Word of God. Whether in sickness or health, joy or sorrow, this blessed book is our best friend. I then told them how God had led me to

1 The rebellion, also known as Indias First War of Independence, began in May 1857 when disaffected Bengal soldiers shot their British officers, and marched on Delhi. The uprising lasted until 20 June 1858 and the Fall of Gwalior. 2 CH Malan, A Soldiers Experience of Gods Love And Of His Faithfulness To His Word (1874) (London, James Nisbet & CO. 21 Berners Street 1874), p20.

believe it and love it, and asked if they would like me to read to them. They thanked me. Many a poor sick fellow raised himself in his bed. They listened with deep attention while I read to them those precious words of the Lord Jesus, in Luke 15. Here we learn that the love of God gives free and full forgiveness of sins to the sinner who turns to Him. The father kissed his son, in token of his acceptance before the son could say, Father, I have sinned. Because sin had been atoned for, put away by the blood and sacrifice of Christ, God forgives the guiltiest sinner who turns to Him before he can get on his knees and confess his sins! His forgiveness was purchased when his great Substitute died for him. He can rejoice in His forgiveness when he believes that the Substitute was the Son of God, who lives in glory to bring him there. Then, while he rejoices, he will mourn that he should have so long rejected one who so loved him. This is repentance, because he will then forsake sin and turn to God. I had drawn my bow at a venture, in humble faith. I had hardly gone up on deck for fresh air when a corporal came to see me. Sir, that deserter MNiff wants to see you. I was too tired then to go to him, but I went after my evening reading to the men between decks. This soldier, a prisoner, screened away from the rest, had heard every word that I had read and said; and like iced water to fevered lips, the message had come home to his soul. Sir, he said, Im a great sinner. Ive done very wrong, and Im very, very sorry for it. I heard what you read this afternoon, and I am like that poor man. You said there was mercy for all who repent. I do most truly; will God forgive me? I took his hand. It was pitch dark, but I felt God was present. My poor friend, you are causing joy through all heaven, was my reply. Simply, I told him the story of the Cross, simply he believed. I am so thankful I came here, said the poor fellow; and added, Oh, sir, let me once more take your hand. There was no humbug about this man. He had nothing to gain from me. He was dying of consumption. Everything he wanted the doctor gave him. Great was his joy in God his Saviour. I talked with him every day; and when his blessed spirit was released, and I committed to the deep the body of my dear brother here departed, the Lord sent a wave up to the very edge of the gangway, to receive it with the tenderness of a mother to her child. That wave was a beautiful sight.6 summers had a fearful reputation for disease, he dreaded the assignment. However, having publicly declared his absolute trust in Christ, he dared not turn down the posting unless Christ should also be dishonoured. Therefore, he prayed earnestly at the start of the journey. His prayer was answered when the word came with assurance to his heart, Be strong, and work, for I am with you says the Lord of hosts - Hagai 2:4. 7 It was, a field prepared of God for sowing.8 The ships Captain was a personal friend, so Malan asked his permission to visit the sailors and to speak to them about Christ. If they have no objection, I should be glad, was his kind reply. Malan visited the various dining rooms and offered to read to them every evening from a book, which was my very best friend, if they would like me to do so.9 His offer was received warmly, and for the next 16 months from 3 February 1868 until 4 June 1869 Malan read and explained the Scriptures to the ships crew from half-past six until eight oclock every day. In the afternoons he visited the hospital and read the Bible to the sick. Very happy are my recollections of that voyage. The affection which many of the bluejackets have for the ship is wonderful. It was a good day I ever sailed in her. I thank God that dear old --------- was ever built. None of them, however is more thankful than I am: It is more blessed to give than to receive.

A Love That Casts Out Fear

Malan, encouraged by the Lords blessing on his work, thus formed a lifelong practice of seeking every opportunity to tell people about Christ. He prayed fervently for God to enable him and then gave himself fully to the work. A number of incidents illustrate his labour. In 1868 Malan was promoted to the rank of Major and was placed in command of a company of around 100 men in Hong Kong. Possibly due to the fact he had already been invalided away from India, and that Chinese

He was a religious man. He read the Bible every day and strived to obey it.

A year or more after the voyage, I met a sailor at Singapore. He touched his cap, Very glad to see you, sir. I thanked him, remembering that we made the voyage to China together. You were not then a believer in Christ, my friend, I added. No, sir he said; but do you remember the night of that terrible gale of St Pauls? I was lying in my hammock in fear and trembling when I saw you come down to read the gospel to the men. I could not hear a word you said, but I could see your face, and I watched you the whole time. I saw your bright, happy smile just the same as ever. I said to myself, Here am I, an old sailor, many years at sea, and I am afraid now in this gale; and heres a landsman as happy as if he were ashore. I felt that you had what I had not; I felt that you had, what I had heard you say you had, forgiveness of sins and eternal life. I prayed that night. Ever afterwards I came near you when you were reading, and when I left the ship I was a believer in the Lord Jesus Christ. Well did I remember the gale. I went below that night because I thought that, if I did not go among them, the men would imagine that I was afraid, and I thought I might cheer them. The Word of God is the same in a storm as in a calm, men; it always does us good, was my opening remark. I sat on a mess-table as usual, enjoying that evening as much as any. Little did I then think what the Lord had done by making His joy and peace shine in my face. He is wonderful in counsel.10 When he arrived in India his anxiety had been replaced with a heart, rejoicing in God more than it had

ever done before.11 Furthermore, he was relieved to hear that he was to command a forward element of the Regiment located in a remote rural area, which he was to travel to by sea. With the permission of the Captain he proceeded to speak to the sailors of Christ. I was walking on deck one morning before breakfast, while the deck cleaning was going on. A sailor passed me with a smile on his face, touching his cap, and saying, Good morning, sir. Good morning my friend, was my reply. After noticing the glory of Gods works around us, I asked him whether he had been listening to His Word since I came on board. I shall never forget the light which burst on that mans face as he said, Yes, sir, indeed I have, thank God! I was the biggest blackguard [scoundrel] on this ship, sir, and any man will tell you the same. But, thank God! Thats all at an end. It was the night you talked to us of the pearl of great price. Oh, sir, I have found that pearl! I have found it! His face was radiant with delight, and I could not doubt but that he had indeed, by Gods mercy, been led to Him who has power now on earth to forgive sins. He found similar fruit on a previous voyage from America to England. The day the ship arrived at Liverpool the first officer offered the men, who had been working very hard all day, a second glass of grog [an alcoholic drink]. No, thank you sir, was the reply he received. You know that when we embarked at Montreal there was not a man of us who would not have gone up to his armpits in rum, but theres been a gentleman among us this passage who has taught us whats a deal

better than grog. Blessed be God for a sailors profession of faith!12 While Malan was outstandingly diligent in his duties as an officer, his eye was also constantly fixed on winning people to Christ. Lives were transformed as he laboured in prayer and seeking every opportunity to tell people about Christ. But over the years a second desire had also begun to develop in his heart, which he committed to God in prayer; he wished to be placed in command of a body of men in a position of great danger, and to be delivered by the Lord. He expected that his prayer would be answered in a fierce fight on the battlefield. However, the Lord chose to answer his prayer in a more unexpected but none the less, miraculous manner in October 1871 in South Africa.

I Know Whom I Have Believed

From the moment that Malan and his men landed in South Africa it rained. They arrived on a Wednesday in the rain. It then rained on the Thursday and even harder on the Friday. Having travelled from China and its harsh climate, his men were weak and highly vulnerable to disease. There was a real risk that many of them would die if they were forced to live in wet conditions. The more it rained, the more earnestly did I pray. The Lord answers prayer in more ways than one. He either does directly what we ask, or He makes man His instrument for performing His will and answering prayer, or else He fulfils His word, which cannot be broken, Ask, and you shall receive. On Saturday the camp was a complete swamp. There was a pool of water in my own tent, and most of the others were much the same way. Very earnestly did I pray for

deliverance for my men. I felt sure it would come. After breakfast, the Lord led me to determine to go down to the village and seek shelter for them. Having prayed for His guidance, I asked the control officer to accompany me, which he was most willing to do, and we went together to the village. We inquired after some empty stores, and were not long in hearing of one. I had asked the Lord to open the hearts of any who might have the buildings available to lend them. The first person I asked offered his most willingly. I will show it, sir; and if it will do you, you are most welcome. We have been thinking how those poor fellows must feel it in camp after China. It was a large store, which at a pinch, would hold three hundred men comfortably. I thanked him much. With a light and thankful heart I returned to camp.. Hardly had I got the companies into their new quarters, and the officers in the little hotel, when the storm came with increased violence and the rain fell in torrents. This continued all night. A ship was wrecked a few miles from us. The guard who came down from camp reported that the inside of the tents, and the whole camp, was ankle-deep in water. How I thanked God for having delivered my men out of so great danger, and for having used me as His instrument in so doing! I have never seen such weather as this for twenty-years, sir, was the harbour-masters remark when I went to visit him. On the following day, having had all the tents opened towards the sun, to dry the inside, I marched the men back to camp. We commenced our journey to King Williams Town next day. I hoped that we should have fine weather; but I was yet to have one more trial of faith. I was awakened the morning after our first halt by the sound of rain on my tent. I knew well what that meant; a wet march of more than 20 miles, wet camping-ground, wet tents; and my men would suffer as much as if I had kept them in camp in East London. But I knew also in whom I believed, and that He was able. The word of the Lord came to me at once: Elijah was a man subject to like passions as we are and he prayed that it might not rain, and it did not rain James 5:17. I got up, threw my cloak over my shoulders and began my prayer, saying, Where is the Lord God of Elijah. O Lord hear - 2 Kings 2:14, and then I prayed that, as He has before delivered my men, He would yet do so again, and cause the rain to cease. I had hardly finished my prayer when an officer in the next tent shouted to his servant, Any counter-orders for the march? I answered him with No. I dressed, and putting on my waterproof, walked to the sergeant-majors tent, to tell him to turn out the men. Before I got back to my own tent the rain had ceased; and when the men fell in for the march, there were heavy rain-clouds all round, and a low rolling cloud within a few yards of their heads, covering the whole camp, but not one drop of rain! I prayed for strength for the men for what was a long march for me just come from China, and it was granted. The distance was twentytwo miles, the road bad, we had no music but one fife13 and a drum; and only one old man, who had been more than twenty years in the service, fell out! I find in my diary, The officers noted the stopping of the rain as very remarkable. The next day we marched into King Williamss Town, Well, major, said one of my officers to me, a week or two afterwards,
13 A musical instrument like a flute

that was a very wonderful thing; we have just talked about it. All that rain at East London, and not a man caught a cold! It was wonderful indeed; and yet not so, for it was an answer to fervent prayer. Thus the Lord has in His wisdom fulfilled my third desire. He had given me command of a body of men in a position of great danger to them all, and He had enabled me to deliver them out of it.14 What a wonderful God who owns and controls the whole Earth and all of its processes. Should we be surprised that those who know Him, and serve Him, see such miraculous answers to prayer? How many owed their survival and place in heaven to the man who had been praying secretly and whose prayers were answered so graciously by the Lord?

Getting Higher on God

Opiates and the Experience of Rave Worship
By Larry DeBruyn
Do not be drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit. Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord. Giving thanks always for all things to God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ; Submitting yourselves to one another in the fear of God Ephesians 5:18-21. regularly engaged in the activity, secular authorities tried to muzzle the preachers by passing laws against them; but in the name of free speech, and because of the legal knowledge of Caleb Corneloup, the Supreme Court ruled in favour of the street preachers. After all, if other secular groups espousing radical ideologies were allotted the legal right of public assembly to express their views, why not The Street Church?2 The whirlwind weekend of ministry passed by quickly, and before I knew it, the time arrived for me to get to the airport on Saturday evening in order to catch a flight to Melbourne so that I could connect to another flight to Wellington, New Zealand, the next morning. (For a week, I was scheduled to preach in various locations throughout the north island.) that in their gatherings the worshippers played loud and raucous music, danced, did drugs and partied (and who knows what else?).

Craving for Rave

After his description of rave worship, I thought to myselfis this where adapting worship in order to give seeker audiences thrills and chills, where constantly tweaking the worship style to fit the mood of the culture and the insatiable cravings of congregants will lead? Worship that resembles the atmosphere of Israels partying before the Golden Bull when, the people sat down to eat and to drink, and rose up to play, clamorous worship that to Joshua sounded like war was going on in the camp - Exodus 32:6, 17. Is this what results when so-called worship becomes sourced in the wants of peoples bodies and brains, in what the Bible calls lusts of the flesh, (Greek, epithumias sarkos) 2 Peter 2:18?

Introduction
Scores of architecturally significant churches dot the landscape of the Australian city of Adelaide, structures that were built to last and perhaps bear testimony to a Christian influence in that part of the world. Upon visiting that city last year (September 24-25, 2011), my initial impression was perhaps like that of the Apostle Paul when he was in Athens and said, Men of Athens [of Adelaide] , I observe that you are very religious in all respects - Acts 17:22. Under the auspices of Christian Witness Ministries (CWM) and with Philip Powell the director of CWM, the Lord gave me the opportunity of ministry with The Street Church, a small Bible fellowship of committed Christians in Adelaide. The church is led by the Corneloup brothers, Sam and Caleb, the former who came to the Lord out of a life of crime. In many ways the fellowship encouraged my spirit with the presence of many young people. For the seminars, the church rented The German Club in the downtown area in that city. With some of the members of The Street Church, I had my first opportunity at street preaching at Rundle Mall, an open air shopping area in the heart of Adelaide.1 As an American with a distinct Michigander accent, people passed by, briefly stopped to listen, and then went their way. Because The Street Church

Heaven!
My driver, a young man from The Street Church, drove me to the Adelaide airport. During that ride and upon leaving the city proper, we drove by one of the beautiful church structures in that city. From the outside, the church appeared no different from the other church buildings with the exception of a large banner that brazenly hung across the steeple and over the entrance of the historic building. On that banner was painted one word: HEAVEN. I turned to my driver and asked him, Is the name of that church HEAVEN? He answered, Yes! and then proceeded to inform me that the church was the one he used to attend before he became a believer in the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ. I asked him what kind of church it was. He informed me it was a rave church. Well, not knowing what a rave church was for, not ever having heard of one before, I questioned him further about what kind of church it was. He told me

Ravings in the Nave

Apparently, rave worship originated amongst young Anglicans in the early 1990s in the United Kingdom, where Matthew Fox, the defrocked Roman Catholic priest who later became an Episcopalian, picked it up, brought it back to San Francisco, and adapted it to suit his New Age eco-mysticism.3 In 1994, about a year after leaving the Roman Catholic Church, the LA Times confirmed that Fox got the idea for the head-banger liturgy [the rave mass] after visiting a band of unorthodox young Anglicans in Englandwhere the Rave in the Nave features loud music, women dancing in bikinis and video monitors flashing messages such as Eat God [evidently referring to their belief in the Eucharists transubstantiated elements].4

2 On 3/10/2012 the fight was taken to The High Court of Australia, where the Corneloup brothers defended their case on the basis of freedom of speech. The judgment is expected in February, 2013.

Getting Higher on God

Opiates and the Experience of Rave Worship
(continued)
On this point, it can be noted that as early as 1991, evangelical leader Leonard Sweet sourced his creation spirituality in Foxs eco-mysticism when he wrote that, Creation spirituality is of tremendous help here in weaning us from this homocentric warp [that is, any understanding that makes humanity the centrepiece of Gods creation and entrusts the stewardship over nature to them].5 Rave worship, sourced in the eco-mysticism of a pantheistic or panentheistic worldview, has as its mantra, If it feels good, do it! So do it they do. A few years ago, USA Today reported that U2-charists have also come to Episcopal congregations in the United States, and perhaps will find their way into other denominations and congregations as well.8 One young worshipper, a Roman Catholic who attended a U2-charist at a nearby Episcopal church, reported of her experience: It makes you, like, warm inside. Usually at church you love Jesus and everything. But this way you can express how you feel.9 is a party animal who wants to win over youngsters with supernatural highs. Another raver states: Heaven is going to be wild. God will show up and be the life of the party. We want to see fun coming back into the Church.

Testimonials of Ravers
Matthew Fox first became acquainted with rave masses in England. In one instance, the Mass was held in the basement of a sports complex and included 42 television sets flashing images of galaxies, dancing atoms, DNA, lunar eclipses and male-female archetypes.11 He offered his impressions of the masses he attended: My first experience of the Mass was that this is a very friendly experience for a generation raised on television. My second experience was that these people are taking television away from the broadcasters and doing it live in the heart of the community, which is worship.12 Now the following testimonials of participants in the rave worship which occurred at Sloshfest are offered:13 People are looking for something relevant to them. If you like to party, drink and take drugs, our advice is, Dont drink Vodka, drink God-ka. There is no greater high than the Most High. When you come into Gods presence there is an intoxication that is overwhelming. God wants us to enjoy his wine and embrace the spiritual realm. Of course we all like to drink the yum rum of heaven, too. When Im worshipping I know I look absolutely insane, but thats how Im affected by my heavenly daddy.
11 Religious News Service, Rave Masses Seek to Appeal to Those Raised on Television. 12 Ibid. 13 All the quotes which follow are taken from Lowes, The ravers who get high on God.

Descriptions of Rave
Rave is thought to be a rising supernatural movement in the UK consisting of a wide spectrum of Christians who, disaffected by and having dropped out of organized religion, are burning for Jesus.10 A 4th annual Sloshfest held in 2010 in South Wales, attended by a crowd of about 600 from alternative churches all over the UK, was described as involving wild-eyed and out of control participantssweaty clothes clinging to their backsflailing wildly to a booming beat. During what appeared to resemble more a primitive and tribal religious celebration like those which have occurred in many cultures from time immemorial, some ravers even passed out amidst their whirling and dancing. The party, so it is claimed, consisted of revellers unaffected by either booze and/or drugs, but rather by the power of God, an ecstasy of worship that participants ascribed to God-ka and the yum rum of Heaven. One 38-yearold participant made no apology for the participants acting out of themselves because in his opinion, God

U2-Charists
Perhaps spinning-off the idea of Rave Masses, some Anglican-Episcopal churches now blasphemously call their Holy Communion service a U2-Charist in which hymns are replaced by the Irish rock-groups best-selling songs.6 The communion service is described: In what is more rock concert than Book of Common Prayer, a live band will belt out U2 classics such as Mysterious Ways and Beautiful Day as worshippers sing along with the lyrics, which will appear on screens. The [nightclub] atmosphere will be further enhanced by a sophisticated lighting system that will pulse with the beat . . . .7

It is such a wild fire. It is a fierce wild fire. It is untameable and undomesticated. (These words were spoken by a middle-aged woman dressed as Pinky Pirate who shaking uncontrollably grabbed a microphone and bellowed them out to the raucous crowd.) Im Mrs. Jesus. I love my husband. (A woman dressed as a pirate queen uttered these words while crawling on the floor, looking spaced out, and manifesting red, puffy eyes and a vacant stare despite no sign of alcohol or drugs consumption.)

Revellers, or Revilers?
Because Sloshfest is a Christmas party, revellers dress up like a monk, priest, nun, dancing pirate, Abraham Lincoln, unicorn, winged fairy, court jester draped with Christmas lights, etc. Amidst all the costuming, in the main room the party is pumping, with dry ice, air horns and dazzling disco lights adding to the debauched atmosphere. So is Sloshfesting, revelling in God, or reviling Him? To answer the question, only the Word of God can be our guide and judge. On this point, what was the Lords take on one of the original Sloshfests (I say one of the original because amongst primitive peoples they had been going on long before the incident of Israels worshipping of the Golden Bull Exodus 32:1-35? Assurance for me regarding this issue, notwithstanding all the participants testimonials, can only be moderated by the Word of God - 2 Timothy 3:16-17. To this point, Archibald Alexander wrote: There is nothing more necessary than to distinguish between true and false experiences in religion . . . . And in making this discrimination, there is no other test but the infallible Word of God; let every thought, motive, impulse, and emotion be brought to this touchstone.14 To this pastor it stands axiomatic and logically consistent that the spiritual work of God will in nowise contradict the Scriptures which the Holy Spirit inspired to be written cf. 2 Peter 1:21.

Unlike the crowd at the first Pentecost, whom sceptical onlookers accused as being drunk with new wine, but who in fact were not - Acts 2:13 - the claim of ravers that their euphoria has nothing to do with taking drugs or drinking alcohol may ring a bit hollow. As one worshipper exclaimed, God makes me so happy. I love him but Im a bit drunk. One well-known speaker at Sloshfest, who claims to have met Jesus on an acid trip, is described as slurring through his sermons and talking about smoking the Baby Jesus, being whacked out and tokin [urban slang for smoking pot] on the Holy Ghost.15 He calls these expressions metaphors of the Christian life! In 2005, that speaker, John Crowder, wrote a book The New Mystics in which he promoted Sloshfest-style ecstatic worship and mystical Christianity. Then in 2009, he wrote a sequel, The Ecstasy of Loving God: Trances, Raptures, and the Supernatural Pleasures of Jesus Christ. Further insight into the question lies in John Crowders testimony, one in which he claims to have met Jesus while on an acid trip, and his message when he talks about smoking the Baby Jesus and tokin on the Holy Ghost. How can such activities, so diametrically opposed to the work of the Holy Spirit, things categorized by the Apostle Paul as lusts of the flesh, lusts that include sorcery (Greek, pharmakeia or drugs), drunkenness, carousing and things like these be instrumental in saving a persons soul - Galatians 5:20-21, NASB? Such cravings lay in stark contrast to the fruit of the Spirit, one of which is self-control - Galatians 5:23, NASB. Persons may be saved from such activities, but they are not saved by such activities - 1 Corinthians 6:9-11. In all fairness, one Sloshfester does testify to his having been saved from drugs and alcohol.16
15 The You Tube Prophet (aka Getting High on Jesus), Parts One and Two YouTube (http://www. youtube.com/watch?v=RKUrUUvpMxE). The video exhibits the actions of participants to be like those manifested in The Toronto Blessing, only kicked-up several notches. 16 He states: From around the age of 18 I got into drink and drugs. Id take speed, acid, amphetamine and smoke cannabis every day. Three years later I went to a church in Newport with a friend whod reformed and I realised [sic] Jesus had plans for my life. I gave myself to him and that ripped out the desire for drugs and alcohol. See Lowe, The ravers who get high on God.

But this mans soul was not converted because of the influence of drugs and alcohol, but in spite of it.

Are These People Mad?

Sloshfesting impresses me not as being church, but as carousing. Rave worship (as in stark raving mad) impresses me as being opposite from one fruit of the Spirit, self-control - Galatians 5:23. In rave worship, people are out of control. The inbred and eccentric phenomena of rave, observed first hand by passers-bye or inquirers who watch it on You Tube, will not only give unbelievers a wrong impression about the meaning of The Gospel, but also fail to impress many observant believers. As the Apostle Paul questioned, If . . . ungifted men or unbelievers enter [or go online?] , will they not say that you are mad? 1 Corinthians 14:23. Illustrating the apostles point, one curious passer-by is reported to have shook his head and laughingly commented after having through a steamed-up window observed the rage of rave: Looks like one hell of a party. To me, the phenomena of rave church as manifested at Sloshfest 2010, may be compared to The Toronto Blessing of the 1990s, only on steroids.17 As rave and Sloshfesting, dancing the Holy Ghost Hokey Pokey belongs to the same perversion of so-called worship.18

Conclusion
My first article, Getting High on God, was meant to draw attention to a study coming out of the University of Washington which suggests that attending a Protestant mega church actually does produce a high much like being on drugs.19

Getting Higher on God

Opiates and the Experience of Rave Worship
(continued)
Drugs: An Implicit Connection From the UW study, it has been noted that mega churches are powerful purveyors of emotional religious experience as they blend together popular music, state-of-the-art technology and positive and nonthreatening messages, all of which and more, contribute to make up an Oxytocin cocktail that affects a sense of recognition, trust, and a reduction of stress in the brains of congregants.20 The UW study makes implicit the connection between the mega church and the inner opiates that, when stimulated by the right mechanisms, provide spiritual euphoria for, among and between congregants. Drugs: An Explicit Connection This article, Getting Higher on God, has sought to draw attention to the new wave of worship that many are seeking to catch a ride on, worship that unabashedly makes explicit the connection between drugs (whether induced from within or ingested from without, who knows?) and the attainment of spiritual ecstasy. The point being, that such spiritual experiences, whether emotionally euphoric or mystically ecstatic are not the result of the Holy Spirits ministry in the life of a believer, but rather the result of the hyped-up machinations, manipulations and managements of church leaders. The difference between the euphoria engendered by the mega church and the ecstasy by the rave church may well be only one of degree, not kind. A comparison might be made between smoking pot (the euphoria lite engendered by the mega church) and shooting heroin (the ecstasy heavy incited by the rave church). Mega churches have mastered a strategy of how to offer their congregants lite doses of experience (euphoria). The rave church has upped the ante by offering its participants heavy doses of experience (ecstasy). Neither movement evidences sober-mindedness, that spiritual attribute the New Testament enjoins believers to cultivate - Titus 2:2, 4, 6; 1 Peter 1:13; 4:7; 5:8. In fact, if the euphoria or ecstasy of so-called worship is induced by means other than by the Holy Spirit, then it violates Pauls injunction to be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit, the manifestations of whichSpeaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord. Giving thanks always for all things to God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ; Submitting yourselves to one another in the fear of God, bear no resemblance to those exhibited in Sloshfesting - Ephesians 5:18-21. Worship that masquerades as drunkenness in the Holy Ghost resembles more the wine bibbing of a bacchanal celebration than worship of the Holy God.21 Therefore let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober. For they that sleep, sleep in the night; and they that are drunken are drunk in the night. But let us, who are of the day, be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love; and for a helmet, the hope of salvation 1 Thessalonians 5:6-8. ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

21 Bacchus was the Roman god of wine and intoxication, equated with the Greek Dionysus. A festival, introduced in Rome around 200 BC, honouring the god was celebrated in the late winter and early spring of the calendar year.

Old Testament Priestly Garment

By Amy Mikayla Pitman
Second Layer
The second layer was called the Robe of the Ephod, and was dyed blue. It reached from the neck to a little below the knees. The robe of the Ephod had a woven binding so that it would not tear. It was woven without seams. The rim of the Ephod was embellished with blue, red, and crimson pomegranates with bells of gold between each pomegranate. The pomegranates are symbolic of fruitfulness on account of the many seeds found in one pomegranate. The bells jingled when the priest was in the Holy of Holies showing that he was still alive and had not been smitten by God. They are the symbols of testimony. the burden carried by the High Priest. The shoulders represent the place of strength.

Third Layer
The third layer was called the Ephod and had threads of blue, purple, scarlet, and figures of gold. Exodus 39:2-7 tells how the Ephod was to be made. We read: He made the Ephod of gold, blue, purple, and scarlet thread, and of fine woven linen. And they beat the gold into thin sheets and cut it into threads, to work it in with the blue, purple, and scarlet thread, and the fine linen, into artistic designs. They made shoulder straps for it to couple it together; it was coupled together at its two edges. And the intricately woven band of his ephod that was on it was of the same workmanship, woven of gold, blue, purple, and scarlet thread, and of fine woven linen, as the LORD had commanded Moses. And they set onyx stones, enclosed in settings of gold; they were engraved, as signets are engraved, with the names of the sons of Israel. He put them on the shoulders of the ephod as memorial stones for the sons of Israel, as the LORD had commanded Moses. The onyx stones that were placed on the shoulders of the priest symbolize

In Exodus chapters 24 to 28 we read about the making of the Tabernacle in the wilderness and the weaving of the materials used for the Tabernacle and for the priests whom God chose to perform the duties of the Tabernacle. Each piece of material had specific meaning. From the fine and pure threads of linen, to the precious stones on the breastplate, all had a purpose and significance. The day garments of the high priest were called the golden garments and the garments for the Day of Atonement were designated the white garments. Blue - represents the divinity of Christ. Linen - represents the spotless righteousness of Christ. Scarlet - represents sacrificial work. Purple - represents royalty. Gold - represents deity.

The Final Items

The Sash was of the same fabric as the Ephod and was used to tie it firmly to the body. The Headpiece turban and the gold plate set at the front symbolize obedience to a higher order. On the gold plate was engraved, HOLINESS TO THE LORD. The Breastplate was the last item and it was placed on top of the Ephod and signifies judgment. The breastplate was made of gold, blue, purple, scarlet, and of fine twined linen. It had 12 stones set in four even rows. The 12 stones represented the twelve tribes of Israel. These are the stones that God told Moses to place on the breastplate with their representations: First row: sardius Judah; topaz Issachar; carbuncle - Zebulun. Second row: emerald Ruben; sapphire Simeon; diamond - Gad. Third row: ligure Ephraim; agate Manasseh; amethyst - Benjamin. Fourth row: beryl Dan; onyx Asher; jasper - Naphtali.

First Layer
The first layer of clothing was pure white linen pants which were worn under two other layers of tightly woven linen. The pants reached from the waist to the thighs.
