They have also inculcated its value to its employee the mutual respect, teamwork and commitment to work equally to achieve their utmost objectives in serving their customers needs. Their employees are equipped with the best training and work ethics toward responsibility and personal growth.

Wal-Mart is a retail success compared to a wide range of other retail organizations in the US and around the world that have tried and failed in the retail sector. Its success has come about from the wide range and far reaching goods and services it provides in the retail sector.

Employment Security
Wal-Mart always said that for an organization to be successful it will have to hire, train, maintain, and reward, the best employees, so that they provide the best services to customers, which lead to customer satisfaction and retention. It also leads to increased profits for the organization. This established theory differs from the practice of Wal-Mart which has faced increased criticism with regard to employees being pressured into working unpaid overtime, alleged sexual discrimination towards female employees, which constitute two thirds of its workforce (Adams 2005), low pay, poor worker safety, disability discrimination, etc (Miller 2004), and the company still enjoys outstanding profitability and growth whilst its employees are not treated fairly. Possible reasons for the success of Wal-Mart in light of such human resource practice and the theories mentioned can be said to come from the fact that it is a large organization with outlets in and outside the US as well, i.e. when an organization becomes too

big, bureaucracy and red tape tends to filter through, therefore, employees have been slow to call for these damaging claims about the organization possibly of fear of losing their only job.

Selectivity in Recruiting
Wal-Mart is all the time serious about obtaining profits through people will expand the effort needed to ensure that they recruit the right people in the first place. Wal-Mart has a large recruitment pool from where they recruit employees for the accurate position. It is one of the most profitable retail outlets in the world, and consistently ranked quite high in ratings of service quality. Wal-Mart is extremely careful and selective in its recruiting practices. Wal-Mart follows a long process to recruit people. After passing the preliminary test and screening process applicants will need to go to a series of interview and they must agree to have a background check, this is to make sure about the authenticity of their personality according to human resource staff. Wal-Mart also provide chance to re apply after six months, so that the applicant can re prepare themselves for the position.

Training and Skill Development

An internal part of most new work systems is a greater commitment to training and skill development. Training is an essential component of high-performance work systems because these systems rely on front-line employee skill and initiative to identify and resolve problems, to initiate changes in work methods, and to take responsibility for quality. All of this requires a skilled and motivated work force that has the knowledge and capability to perform the requisite tasks. Wal-Mart stores offer various opportunities to reach the employees goal, they have taken the services of college students to work part time or full time depending on their schedules. As part of their recruitment and selection process they have employed significant numbers of diverse students. They can choose from varieties of careers and development training program. Their internship program involves practical training and development program interaction to customers and employees and other practical works involvement to present them the real job environment. Successful firm, like Wal-Mart that emphasize training do so almost as a matter of

faith and because of their belief in the connection between people and profits. Training and development isnt a one-time event at Wal-Mart. Its an integral and ongoing part of an associates life. Each associate begins with an in-depth personal orientation. This is how WalMart introduce the employees to their history and culture and paint a picture of the roles and responsibilities they will take on when an employee join the operations of the worlds largest retailer. After orientation, each division has its own specific and detailed Training and Development programs that give the new employees the knowledge and tools to win success in Wal-Mart.

High Wages
Although labor markets are far from perfectly efficient, it is nonetheless the case that some relationship exists between what a firm pays and the quality of the work force it attracts. It is amusing to see firms announce simultaneously that first, they compete on the basis of their people and that their goal is to have the very best work force in their industry, and second, that they intend to pay at the median wage for comparable people in the industry. The level of salaries sends a message to the firm's work forcethey are truly valued or they are not. Apparently, all those protests by Wal-Mart workers over pay and benefits arent getting through to CEO Mike Duke. At a recent event, Bloomberg LP President Dan Doctoroff pointed out to the Wal-Mart chief executive that even though his company paints itself as "serving an emerging middle class," many of its employees arent paid enough to lead a normal life and some even resort to food stamps to make ends meet, as previously reported by The Huffington Post. This is what Duke had to say in response: "Retailing is the most competitive industry out there, and we do pay competitive wages," Duke told Doctoroff, according to Business Insider, noting that around 165,000 Wal-Mart employees were promoted from entry-level positions last year. Our associates are a great source of pride and personal inspiration for me," he added. But maybe thats simply because hes getting away with paying them so little. According to market research firm Ibis World, the average wage for a Wal-Mart employee is $8.81 per hour, barely over the minimum wage in some states. Wal-Mart executives say average rates are higher, with estimates including $11.75 per hour and$12.40 per hour. In contrast, Duke made $18.7

million in 2010. With a CEO-to-employee pay ratio of 717-to-1,that ranks Duke Second among a list of 50 CEOs who are paid significantly more than their employees.
