Mission
"Facebook's mission is to give people the power to share and make the world more open and connected."

The History Of Facebook

Facebook is a popular social network that has grown to rank with MySpace has. But what is it about Facebook that has special appeal and makes it even more popular than MySpace? What makes Facebook Facebook? And what made it a mega hit? It all got started back in 2003, as Facemash. Mark Zuckerberg created it, along with help of his friends and roommates Chris Hughes and Dustin Moskovitz. Zuckerberg was in his sophomore year at Harvard when opened it up, as a way to get his mind off his crush. Facemash placed photos of undergraduate two side by side, and asking the viewers which one is hotter. The site was originally only for Harvard, but quickly grew to other colleges, then high schools and finally for anyone over age 13. After it was initially started, it was forwarded to Harvards school admins and it was quickly shut down. Zuckerberg was charged and faced expulsion for breaching privacy. Later on, Harvard dropped their charges against Zuckerberg. After the charges were dropped, the following semester he recreated Facemash, and opened The Facebook in February 2004. In 2005, he dropped the from the name and URL. Also in September 2005, he launched the High School version of Facebook. When he first started the high school version, each high school had to be invited before being allowed to join the network. Shortly after launching the high school version he started allow companies to have their own networks on Facebook as well. Now a group of operators, a year after they launched their high school version, they opened it up to the public for everybody over the age of 13. Syria and Iran have blocked Facebook from being accessed in their countries. Some companies have forbidden it from their offices. It has also been said that Zuckerberg had stolen the code and intellectual property from former classmates of his. They have been sued more than once and have been the subject of criticism. In Aug 2007, the code that normally creates the pages for Facebook showed instead of the content, leaving many to wonder if their data on Facebook is even safe. In February 2009, Facebook changed their privacy policy, causing an up roar along the way. They made it so that their users once upload data onto their servers, that they own all the rights. Even after the user deletes their account. Many users got upset by this, and entered a debate that was all over the internet.

EPIC filed a claim against Facebook with the FTC, while Zuckerberg tried to defend Facebooks policy change. To do damage control they switched back to their old policies, though they are in the middle of rewriting them again. They will allow users to vote on the new terms, before they are adopted officially. It has been rumored that a film about Facebook being made, though the Facebook spokesperson has said that they have not agreed to cooperate with anyone about making a film. A 1.6% stake in Facebook had been sold to Microsoft Corp. for $240 million in October 24th 2007. Facebooks history is a mixture of trouble and success from very early on. They have seen more than their share of legal issues and likely will as long as they exist. Currently it is the number one social network with MySpace and Twitter both behind it. They have over 175 million active users worldwide currently and is growing every day. Though they may have had their share of issues, they still maintain a well kept site that hasnt gotten lost through the Web 2.0 shuffle.

SO WHAT EXACTLY IS FACEBOOK?

Facebook is a social networking site that allows users to connect and share information. Facebook is an Internet site that allows users to post online profiles (including photos, information about themselves, etc) and then connect to other users who share the same interests, experiences, etc. Founder Mark Zuckerberg thought up Facebook while he was a student at Harvard to provide an online avenue for students to find one another. It has since morphed into a social network for everyone (Michele Martin, Bamboo Project Blog). Facebook is built around groups and is made up of many networks, each based around a company, region, high school, or college. because it's very easy to use. Many nonprofits already have accounts and are reaping the benefits for their organisation and their cause. One reason why it's so popular is Adding friends, updating your profile, changing your status message - whatever you do takes just minutes.

HOW TO GET STARTED

1. Sign up and create a Facebook account
To get started, go to Facebook.com, click "Register" and fill out a short online registration form. Once you're signed up, you'll need to have a profile to share information and photos about your organisation with others. What to include in your organisation's profile? Photos, links to your Web site, and videos can all be added, and remember, when creating your profile, you can include as little or as much information as you feel comfortable.

2.

Find friends and connect with your community

Now that you have a Facebook account, connecting to people in your community is easy. Start by using the search feature to find friends who are already using Facebook and request to be their friend. You can add just about anyone you can think of, including your members, supporters, volunteers, staff, and even your board members. Don't worry if you don't have a big list right away. Once you have two or more contacts, you'll be able to expand your social network by locating mutual friends and contacting them.

3.

Send and receive messages

Facebook offers a message board feature called "The Wall" that displays member profile pages. You can use it to post all kinds of messages to your network. But beware: Comments can be viewed by all your contacts in your list of Facebook friends.

4.

Create a group for your organisation or event

Just like every other social networking site, you can create and join groups on Facebook, and there are a growing number of groups dedicated to social change. Why create a group? Creating groups allows you to share information about pretty much anything. You can create groups for your organisation or event to make announcements, join discussion groups, or even to share pictures. and your members can invite others to join. There are two kinds of groups on Facebook - open and closed. So be sure to create open groups so that people can find it

5.

Upload and share pictures

One of Facebook's most popular features has been the ability to upload and share pictures. Facebook also offers an unlimited quota, with their only restriction being a 60photos-per-album limit. The process is very simple. Start by creating an album which you can then assign

limitations to (for example, visible to my members only) and upload photos within them. The album is then put into your profile, and other users can see and comment on them. You can also "tag" your photos with the names of people you mention and share the photos via a Web link or by email. What's more, you can order prints online!

6.

Promote your events

Facebook is a great place to promote your organisation's events. Simply create the

event, add pictures, and invite your contacts to join. In addition to groups, you can post details of events in your profile so people can RSVP. You also have the option to leave the event open to people in your network or open for everyone.

7.

Promote your blog or newsletter

Facebook also helps you to promote your blog or newsletter. This feature allows you to share information beyond what's in your profile in two ways. You can either post a note on your page or import your external blog. It is a nice way to communicate with your constituents and update them on your organisation. You can also integrate an RSS feed into your blog with notes. When you post it, the note is displayed in your profile and every one of your "friends" is notified and other members can add comments.

8.

Keep in touch with your members

Facebook has a feature called "News Feed" that allows you to see all kinds of activity within your network. It's very similar to an RSS feed, in that when you log in to Facebook you immediately receive an update of all of the actions your contacts have taken, and if someone posted a new photo album or RSVP'd to an event, you'll be notified right away .

9.

Maintain some privacy

On Facebook, you are in control of what information is out there about your organisation and who can see it. You can retain some privacy by blocking certain people from viewing your profile or by creating a limited profile to hide information you might not want to share with your contacts.

10. Help
Facebook has a comprehensive and easy to follow help section which should answer all your questions. This can be found as http://www.facebook.com/help.php. These points are meant to be a starting point for you to get your group on Facebook and into the social networking world. I hope that you find this useful and that your group is successful in its use of Facebook.

It's a good idea to change your profile settings to prevent people you haven't confirmed as friends from accessing your profile. The link to privacy settings is at the top right and bottom right of the page.

Be careful when providing personal details, even when you're giving them to your friends.

Don't upload any pictures that you'll regret later. Anyone can save them and share them with people you dislike or do not know.

HOW TO MAKE A NEW FACEBOOK GROUP

Facebook Groups, communities of friends with similar interests, have become extremely popular. But, why create a Facebook Group??? Well, organisations and bloggers should create Facebook Groups to further promote brand presence, share news/events with their community and stimulate relevant discussion all in one spot. A prime example of an organisation leveraging Facebook Groups is Contiki - through their group they share brochures, the trip/video of the week, contests, and polls to their 37,000+ members.

Tips to Grow a Successful Facebook Group:

The Right Configuration: Make sure you select a title, category and description that is relevant to your brand because this will entice people to join your group. I also suggest that you be as transparent as possible and offer information such as contact information, website, phone number and location. computer generated content. This allows group members to associate the group to an actual person rather than any old

To offer a real community appeal, enable the ability for anyone to post discussions, wall posts, pictures and videos. Initially you should make the group public which allows anyone to join and invite people to the group; remember you do have the ability to remove members if needed.

Leverage existing Facebook Friends: It's important to attract a strong base of members to your Facebook group, so invite existing friends that may find your group valuable and who could become evangelists for your group. This is where the viral part comes into play: your friends' friends will notice that they joined a new group which will spark interest from them to check it out as well.

Use your email contacts: Don't forget about your friends outside of Facebook because Facebook Groups provides the ability to import and send group invitations to your contacts from Outlook, Yahoo, Gmail and Hotmail.

Press Releases/Blog Posts are other methods which you can use to invite new members to your Facebook Group. Personally, I created a call to action and placed it above the fold which reminds my readers to join my group.

Keep the Content Fresh: Update your group's recent news, photos, videos, events and links regularly so that members have a reason to return. Another simple tactic is deploying a welcome message which greets new members and enforces the 'human factor' of the group.

Create relationships with new members: If you have a group which is open to the general public then you will notice people who are not your 'friends' join your group. These are the types of people are there to get a feel for the quality of the group therefore make it a habit to personally address them.

Tracking Your Group's Success

Here are some metrics and tactics you can use to measure the success of your Facebook Group:

The number of members you have in your group. New members who join per day/week/month. Ratio of new members to people who left the group. Ratio of members who are your Facebook friends vs. not. Engagement: Activity on Wall Posts and Discussion Boards. Members who also accepted invitations to join your events. Links posted in your group back to your blog/website should have parameters appended to them so that they can be segmented in your analytics separately.

TIPS and WARNINGS

Be original, invite your friends, and have fun! Inviting friends to a group is okay once in a while. Beware of "spam-viting" - that is, creating many groups a day and inviting every friend to each one. Instead, take your time and think about who might actually want to join your group before you send them an invitation.

Groups that maliciously target individuals or groups of people are prohibited on Facebook.

Avoid putting personal information such as your own address on a group's webpage unless you are prepared to have company!

1. Organize Friends in Lists

What do you do when your boss, mother-in-law, or a casual web acquaintance sends you a friend request on Facebook? Use Friend Lists. Friend Lists are the foundation of your Facebook privacy settings. Select Friends from the top menu, and use the Create link to create friend lists like Coworkers, Family, College Friends, etc. Your friends cant see your lists, so you can name them whatever you like.

Tip: On your left sidebar, all your friend lists may not show up by default. Click More to see all of them, and drag and drop those you want above the separator.

2. Customize Profile Privacy

Click Settings > Privacy Settings > Profile. Select which parts of your profile will be seen by whom.

4. Restrict Search Visibility

6. Set Facebook Wall Privacy

Go to your profile page, click Options > Settings under the status box.

Here you can control whether your friends can post to your Wall, and who can see the posts made by your friends.

7. Avoid Appearing in Advertisements

Facebook has two types of advertisements: third-party and Facebook. Third-party advertisements are currently not allowed to use your pictures, but there is a setting to disallow it if it is allowed in the future. Go to Privacy > News Feed and Wall > Facebook Ads tab to turn this off.

The Facebook ads shown to your friends are about social actions like becoming a fan of something. You can turn this off at the bottom of the page.

8. Protect Yourself from Friends Applications

Go to Privacy > Applications, and click the Settings tab and uncheck all the boxes. These settings control what information about you is visible to applications installed by your friends. By default, these are set to visible. This means that your religious, sexual, and political preferences, pictures, etc. are readily available to one of the million worldwide Facebook application developers, each time any of your friends takes a quiz, plays a game, or runs any other Facebook app. This is obviously a Facebook privacy issue.

This is the most commonly misunderstood aspect of Facebook privacy. These settings control what applications installed by your friends can see about you, even if you dont install the application yourself. Why is this important? Because these settings will not change anything about what you are sharing with the applications you install yourself. For that, go to the next step.

9. Privacy from Your Applications

There is no way to control what applications see about you; it is an all-or-nothing affair. Take this quiz developed by the American Civil Liberties Union to check what anonymous application developers can know about you and your friends each time you take a quiz. The Burton Groups Identity Blog features the Facebook Privacy Mirror, an application that you can use to find out what applications know about you and your friends. If you really want to see exactly what profile data of each of your friends is visible to application developers, Privacy Mirror shows it in detail. The only thing you can do is to authorize only those applications you require and trust. Go to Settings > Application Settings from the top menu. Change the drop-down from Recently Used

to Authorized. Here you can see all the applications you have authorized to get access to ALL your profile information. Remove the ones you no longer need.

Also check the list of applications Allowed to Post and Granted Additional Permissions to remove unwanted ones.

10. Quitting Facebook? Delete, Dont Just De-Activate Your Account

You can easily deactivate your account in Facebook from the Settings page. But deactivation will retain all your profile information within Facebook, including pictures, friends, etc. If you want to permanently delete your Facebook account, click here to submit a deletion request. Note that: 1. There is an unspecified delay between submitting your delete request and actual deletion. 2. If you login to Facebook, your deletion request is automatically cancelled. 3. There doesnt seem to be any way to confirm that your request was completed. 4. Even after permanent deletion, Facebook says that copies of your photos may remain on their servers for technical reasons.

Facebook Advertising Costs, Daily Budget & Pricing

Facebook is a good advertising platform for your business. You dont need have a specific budget amount to start a campaign. I have started mycampaign for less than 10 USD. There costs for Facebook advertising depends whether you select Pay for Impression (Cost Per Thousand Impression - CPM) orPay for Click (Cost per Click - CPC). The minimum cost that the system allows you to set in the ad campaign is USD 0.02 for CPM and USD 0.01 forCPC. The system will suggest the bid amount, but you could set it lower. For my campaign, I put USD 0.02 the minimum amount for 1000 impressions and still manage to run my campaign as I want. If you want to create awareness for your new portal, product or service but you dont care whether the people actually click the advertisement than you should choose Pay per impression pricing for your campaign. Or else use CPC pricing for your campaign. The minimum daily budget for CPC and CPM is USD 1.00 and Facebook advertising will not charge you more than the minimum budget you have set. In addition, your daily budget must be 2 times the CPC or CPM amount that you set. If you set 10 USD for the CPC, then your minimum daily budget must be set as 20 USD. Facebook will charge your Paypal or credit card for the campaign on a specific billable date or earlier if you have stopped/completed your campaign.
