uclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) is a Public Sector Enterprise under the administrative control of the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE), Government of India. The Company was registered as a Public Limited Company on 17th September 1987 with the objective of operating atomic power stations and implementing the atomic power projects for generation of electricity in pursuance of the schemes and programmes of the Government of India under the Atomic Energy Act, 1962. NPCIL is responsible for design, construction, commissioning and operation of nuclear power reactors, generation & supply of precious clean Energy without releasing any green house gases or ozone depleting substances. NPCIL has for its motto CLEAN POWER GREEN ENVIRONMENT. NPCIL is a MoU signing, profit making and dividend paying company with the highest level of credit rating (AAA rating by CRISIL and CARE). NPCIL is presently operating 20 nuclear power reactors with an installed capacity of 4780 MW. The reactor fleet comprises of two Boiling Water Reactors (BWRs) and eighteen Pressurised Heavy Water Reactors (PHWRs) including one 100 MW PHWR at Rajasthan owned by DAE, Government of India. Currently it has six reactors under various stages of construction totaling 4800 MW capacity out of which one reactor of 1000 MW capacity at Kudankulam, Tamil Nadu, is in the final stage of commissioning. Preproject activities that have received in principle' approval by the Government, have been taken up aggressively so as to enable early launch of projects at these sites. NPCIL has vision to reach out to the surrounding community & general Public through its comprehensive developmental initiatives which includes Health, Education, Employment & Environmental Awareness, besides providing basic amenities & infrastructures to the nearby Villages under Corporate Social Responsibility scheme, along with playing a pivotal role in the economic development of the region. The Mission of the Company is To develop nuclear power technology and to produce nuclear power as a safe, environmentally benign and economically viable source of electrical energy to meet the increasing electricity needs of the country'.

About Kaiga Generating Station Kaiga once a tiny hamlet in the sylvan surroundings of the Western Ghats aloof from the rest of the world is now home to a cluster of four nuclear power plants each of which is rated for a generating capacity of 220 MW(e). The first pair of units that were commissioned nearly a decade ago has made significant strides in safe operation of the nuclear power plants. KGS unit-2 operated continuously for 529 days (from 19.08.2006 to 31.01.2008) to become the longest continuously operated Indian power plant, a feat comparable to the best operating plants in the international arena. KGS-1 also followed this achievement by completing 486 days of continuous operation. KGS-3 was constructed and commissioned in a record time of 59 months. KGS-3 recorded an availability factor of 100 % during the very first month of its operation. KGS Unit-4 achieved distinction of becoming commercial within one day after its first synchronization. The Twin Units at Kaiga, KGS 1&2, are already accredited with IS/ISO-14001 for EMS & IS/ISO-18001 for OHSMS for power production, while KGS 3&4 is in the advanced stage of obtaining these credentials. NPCIL-Kaiga has contributed immensely for the development of the surrounding environment since the very beginning. Kaiga Generating Station has already made gigantic progress to meet its own goal of overall development of the region amid Socio-Political & Economical challenges & is striving to accomplish the set targets. Geographically Kaiga holds a unique position as it is located in the midst of Western Ghats, one of the richest biodiversity hotspots in the world. Anybody coming to Kaiga is enchanted by the beauty of its evergreen forests and the silent valleys of the river Kali. Further, the area falls in the neighborhood of Anshi National park, one of the internationally acknowledged IBAs (Important Bird Areas) in India. Kaiga is located 50 Kms North-East of coastal city of Karwar in Karnataka State.

Why bird survey? The data collected from Bird surveys can become valuable information for scientific research. The fluctuations in avian population may indicate climate changes, pollution level, loss of habitat, migration time etc. Bird races are popular in western countries like Christmas Bird Count, Project Feeder Watch & Great Backyard Bird Count. After it was introduced in India around 2005, it slowly gained popularity. Lucknow Bird Race, Mumbai Bird Race, Bangalore Bird Race and Kerala Bird race have accumulated invaluable data about avian life in these locations. Kaiga Bird Marathon is one such bird race that is slowly gaining in popularity and is contributing immensely to the documentation of avian species around Kaiga. Such accumulation of data would be impossible without the help of each & every Birding enthusiast. This information will be useful in Conservation Projects by Government and other agencies. Environment Stewardship Programme NPCIL has voluntarily taken up Environment Stewardship Programme (ESP), besides fulfilling regulatory and statutory requirements. The ESP has been launched in association with the Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS). The program focuses on the scientific study of bio-diversity, particularly avifauna, within and around Exclusion Zones (EZs) of Indian nuclear power plants for the conservation & improvement of habitat. NPCIL has published two coffee table books viz. Our Flying Guests on the birds found within and around all the Indian nuclear power plants and "7 Edens and 70 Fairies" on the butterflies of Indian NPPs. Our Flying Guests has received appreciation from top officials of the country, naturalists, NGOs, Government, private organizations, and international agencies.

Kaiga Bird Marathon The Marathon is a long distance running event with a distance of 42.195 Kms and is a part of Olympic Games. But, this innovative concept of Avian Marathon differs from the original one. It is a friendly competition to discover nature, especially avian species around us. Objective of this event is to know Feathered Friends around us and to spread the message of bio-diversity and environmental conservation. This event is organized annually with the objective of collecting authentic data for future conservation work. Six teams are formed who go out by walk in search of bird species on six pre-defined transects. The total distance covered by these transects is around 43 Kms. The teams collect as much bird species data in a checklist as possible within the event day. The event would start before sunrise and end by around noon on the same day. All transects are planned in such a manner that they cover all types of habitats around Kaiga. Kaiga Bird Marathon-2013 is the third in the series of Annual Bird Marathons organized by Kaiga Generating Station under the aegis of environmental stewardship program of NPCIL. This event is organized in the months of January to March. This year, the Kaiga Bird Marathon was organized on 12th January 2013, inviting interested Birders from all corners through media and internet. The program was chalked out prior to the event and all logistic requirements were listed to the minutest detail well in advance. A small briefing was organized in Kaiga Township Seminar Hall on 05th January 2013 for beginners in which the participants were briefed on the intent of the Marathon, dos and donts during the event and were given tips on how to identify and count birds. On the event day, all the participants gathered at KGS Nisarga Guest house at 0530 hours. Shri H N Bhat, Site Director, Kaiga Site welcomed the participants and addressed the gathering. Shri Hemant Kumar, Station Director, KGS 3&4 administered the Environmental Protection Pledge for the participants. The teams were flagged off by Shri H N Bhat and Shri Hemant Kumar. All the team members were given packed breakfast so that they can be at the beginning of transects by 0615 hours in the morning.

Enthusiastic birders from North Karnataka Birders Network (NKBN) and Students from College of Forestry-Sirsi are regulars in Marathon and other Birders from Bengaluru, Haliyal, Belgaum, Kochi also participated in the event, together with members of the Kaiga Parivar. A total of 124 persons participated in the event and this is an increase of about 85% over the previous year and about 164% over the participation in the first year of KBM. All the participants were divided into 6 teams and the teams were given bird names - Indian Roller, Malabar Pied Hornbill, Asian Open bill, Little Green Bee eater, Oriental White Ibis and Darter. Each team had one expert bird watcher / ornithologist as the team leader and there were two to three Kaiga representatives as team co-ordinators. The teams were dropped at the beginning point of the transect by 0615 hours and were picked up later in the day at 1200-1300 hours at the end of the transect. The details of the transects is given in appendix-I At the end of the day, the data collected was analyzed. The bird checklist is given in appendix II. The concluding session was held in the afternoon & was chaired by Shri H.N. Bhat, Site Director, Kaiga Site and Shri Hemantkumar, Station Director, KGS-3&4. This concluding session provided the forum for interaction between group members and for providing feedback. Shri Hemantkumar appreciated the efforts by all the participants. Shri H.N. Bhat while appreciating the excellent work done, also briefed the participants about the various enrionmental measures taken by Kaiga Generating Station. The event concluded with distribution of mementos to all the participants.

Bird population thriving around Kaiga nuclear plant

MANGALORE: The Kaiga Bird Marathon, an annual birding event held under the environmental stewardship programme (ESP) of Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited with the aim of identifying bird species around Kaiga Generating Station (KGS) and Kaiga Township, has sighted 20 new species which have not been observed so far. This year's bird marathon held recently identified 162 species of birds, of which 20 were sighted for the first time. A total of 213 species of birds have been identified so far in the region since the marathon started in 2011. K Sriram, Convener ESP, Kaiga, said: the new sightings include Nilgiri Flower pecker (Dicaeum concolor), Crested Goshawk (Accipiter bivirgatus), Rufousbellied Eagle (Lophotriorchis kienerii), Brown Fish Owl (ketupa zeylonensis), Blyth's Starling (Sturnia malabarica(blythi), Crested Treeswift (Hemiprocne coronate), Clamorous Reed Warbler (Acrocephalus stemtoreus), Peregrine Falcon (Falco peregrinus), Besra (Accipiter virgatus), Oriental Honey Buzzard (Pernis ptilorhynchus), Scaly Breasted Munia (Lonchura punctulata), Changeable Hawk Eagle (Nisaetus(cirrhatus) limaeets). Besides all three hornbills Malabar Pied Hornbill (Anthracoceros coronatus), Indian Gray Hornbill (Ocyceros birostris) and Malabar Grey Hornbill (Ocyceros griseus) were also observed. Migrants like Grey Wagtail (Motacilla cinerea), Brown Shrike (Lanius cristatus), Ashy Drongo (Dicrurus leucophaeus), Verditer Flycatcher (Eumyias thalassinus), Blue-capped Rock-Thrush(Monticola cinclorhynchus), Eurasian Golden Oriole (Oriolus oriolus), Osprey (Pandion haliaetu), Barn Swallow (Hirundo rustica), Red-rumped Swallow (Cecropis daurica) were also caught in bird watchers sights during the marathon. Sriram said the results of the study will be helpful in taking up and doing better conservation work for birds, to understand the population of migratory and resident birds, and to ultimately create awareness among the local population to protect Mother Nature. Abdul Samad K S, president of North Karnataka Birders Network, who participated in the marathon, said KGS is the only corporate in Karnataka which has come up with the initiative of identifying and preserving bird species in the area around their company premises. He also mentioned that study of birds is the first step towards achieving environmental protection.
