609.1.1. Description This work consists of constructing and reconstructing sanitary sewers and appurtenances to conform to the drawings. This section refers to conduit used for sanitary sewers as sewer conduit. 609.1.2. Reference documents
1 2 3 Manufacturers recommendations Law no.10/1995 Low regarding quality in constructions All in-force standards and norms mentioned further by these specifications

609.2. Materials The materials used for constructing sanitary sewers and appurtenances shall conform to the indications of the working drawings. 609.3. Equipment All equipment, tools and machinery used for handling materials and executing any part of the work shall be subject to approval of the Engineer before the work is started, and whenever found unsatisfactory, shall be changed or improved as required. All equipment, tools, machinery and containers used shall be kept clean and maintained in a satisfactory condition. 609.4. Construction method 609.4.1. General Excavation, bedding, and backfill must conform to the requirements of Subsection 208.

609.4.2. Laying pipe The Contractor shall begin the pipe laying at the downstream end of the pipe. The lower segment of the pipe shall be kept in contact with the shaped bedding throughout its full length. Bell or groove ends of rigid pipe and outside circumferential laps of flexible pipe shall be placed facing upstream. Paved or partially lined pipe shall be laid so that the longitudinal centerline of the paved segment coincides with the flow line. Elliptical conduit and circular conduit reinforced with other than a full circular cage or cages shall be installed so the orientation of a vertical plane through the longitudinal axis of the conduit does not vary more than 5 degrees from the design orientation. 609.4.3. Joining pipe 1. Rigid Pipe. The Contractor shall use either bell and spigot or tongue and groove joints. Pipe sections shall be joined so that the ends are fully entered and the inner surfaces are reasonably flush and even. The Contractor shall use one or more of the following joint materials, or any other if approved: a. Portland cement mortar b. Portland cement grout c. Rubber gaskets d. Oakum and mortar e. Oakum and joint compound f. Coupling bands g. Preformed plastic sealing compound The Contractor shall make mortar joints using an excess of mortar to form a bead around the outside of the pipe. The joint shall be finished smooth on the inside. For grouted joints, molds or runners shall be used to retain the poured grout. Rubber ring gaskets shall be installed to form a flexible, watertight seal. When using oakum, the Contractor shall caulk the joint and then seal it with the specified material. When using Portland cement mixtures, the Contractor shall protect the completed joints against rapid drying using suitable covering material. 2. Metal Pipe. The Contractor shall join the metal pipe firmly using one of the following types of coupling bands. These bands must be less than two nominal sheet thickness lighter than the thickness of the pipe to be connected and in no case lighter than 1.3 mm. (a) Primary Band. The Contractor shall furnish and install corrugated bands so that the band corrugations match and conform to the corrugations of the pipe.

He shall conform to the following guidelines: 1) The gap between the pipes being joined is in the centre of the band and is no wider than one corrugation width. 2) Bands for 300 mm through 800 mm diameter pipe are at least 300 mm wide. 3) Bands for pipe with diameters greater than 800 mm are at least 560 mm wide. (b) Secondary Band. The Contractor shall use this band only where it is not physically possible to use primary bands, such as on field-cut pipe ends, joining new pipe to existing pipe, etc. He shall furnish and install deformed metal sheet bands (dimple bands) so that the projections match and are the same depth as the pipe corrugations. He shall form these projections in circumferential rows with one projection for each corrugation of the helical pipe. The Contractor shall conform to the following guidelines: 1) The gap between the pipe being joined is in the centre of the band and no wider than 50 mm. 2) Bands for 300 mm diameter pipe are at least 300 mm wide and have one circumferential row of projections for each pipe end being joined. 3) Bands for pipe with diameters greater than 300 mm are at least 600 mm wide and have two circumferential rows of projections for each pipe end being joined. 4) Furnish and install these bands with a gasket that resists infiltration and leakage. 3. Polyethylene Pipe. The Contractor shall ensure that polyethylene pipe couplings are corrugated to match the pipe corrugations and that their width is not less than one half the nominal pipe diameter. He shall furnish all bolted connections on coupling bands with cutwashers placed between the nut and the angle bracket or use nuts with integral washers. He shall take up any pipe that is out of alignment, unduly settled, or damaged and re-lay or replace it. If sewer conduit is directly connected to or supported by rigid structures such as manholes, it must have a joint or flexible connection located 1.5 m or less from the point of connection or support. The Contractor shall lay sewer conduit accurately to the staked line and grade. He shall install all service connections as indicated on the drawings. Suitable fittings and adapters shall be provided when connecting existing service sewers. The Contractor shall clean all foreign matter from sewer conduit. He shall keep water out of trenches until joints are completed. Open ends of conduit and fittings shall be plugged or covered when work is not in progress to keep out foreign matter and rodents. The Contractor shall join the pipes according to manufacturers recommendations, or as detailed on the drawings. When sewer conduit is laid within a 3 m horizontal radius of an existing or a new water main, and is above or 1 m below the water main, the Contractor shall use cast-iron pipe.

Trench sheeting and bracing shall be removed above the elevation of the conduit. The Contractor shall not pull, remove or disturb sheeting below the conduit. 609.5. Quality control for acceptance The quality of the works shall be evaluated by visual inspection and by examination of quality certificates issued by the manufacturer for the materials included in the permanent works. Testing With the Engineer present, the Contractor shall test the sewer for grade, alignment, and leakage. Grade and alignment must conform to staking, with no deviation allowed that would inhibit flow. The Contractor shall test for infiltration if the normal groundwater table lies above the invert of the sewer conduit. Infiltration must not exceed 4.5 L per millimetre of conduit diameter per 100 m of pipe per day. The Contractor shall test for exfiltration when no groundwater exists above the conduit invert. Leakage must not exceed 6 L per millimetre of conduit diameter per 100 m of pipe per day. The minimum test pressure to be used is of 1.2 m of water column above the crown at the upper end of the conduit. All leakage shall be corrected before backfilling. After backfilling, the Contractor shall test each run of conduit for obstructions and alignment by placing a light at one end. The light must be visible through the sewer conduit at the next manhole.
