s many rabbis do, I often begin a
funeral service with the recitation
of the 23rd Psalm, e Lord is
My Shepherd. It is probably the best
known of all the Psalms and is attributed
to King David, thought to be written toward the end of his
life. is Psalm is loved by Jews and Christians alike, for it
speaks of Gods individual care for each human being, noting
in particular Gods protection in the face of death. Being that
it is also a prayer we will recite at the Passover Yizkor service on
Tuesday, April 2 and again at the Shavuot Yizkor service on
ursday, May 16 I thought I would share just a glimpse into
the deeper meaning of this Psalm.
Psalm 23 is a Pilgrims song most likely recited by those
going up to Jerusalem for a religious festival. In ancient times
God is described here as the Shepherd who assures the Pilgrim
a safe journey, secure passage and protection against evil forces
along the way. Psalm 23 expresses ultimate trust in God while
oering idyllic images of green pastures and quiet streams that
can create a feeling of calm within us. We are assured that there
is no reason to fear for God provides all that we could ever want
or need.
Psalm 23 asserts that Almighty will accompany us through
deaths dark valley and bring us safely to the other side
whether it is the World to Come in the next life or consolation
and acceptance in this one. With Gods guidance, the Psalmist
arms that we have nothing to fear.
ankfully the valley is not where we live it is a place we
only visit from time to time- in moments of sadness, loneliness
and isolation, often after suering a loss of a loved one. Indeed,
there are moments sometimes days when we feel aban-
doned, out of control, alone, overwhelmed with anxiety, and as
low as we can be. Being empty and afraid, we think that we
have nowhere to turn. But just when we feel trapped in the
valley of deepest darkness, the Psalmist urges us not to fear
our situation because we are truly never alone.
In short, Psalm 23 bids us and even begs us to try and
turn the page, emerge, reach out and reach up! As such, in
the months to come, may we emerge from those moments of
struggle feeling a greater sense of connectedness to God and to
one another. In this way, Susan, Atara, Micah and Elan join
me in wishing you both external and internal peace and whole-
ness in the days ahead!

ach time I sit down to prepare my
thoughts for the Recorder, I am re-
minded of my seminary days and the
rabbinical students who dug through piles
of old synagogue newsletters, looking for
material to use in their rabbinical theses about one signicant
rabbi or another. And of course, in our own Shaarey Zedek
archives we have quite a collection of newsletters and other print
materials gathered as a tribute to the ages. So, while I am hardly
a signicant rabbi, I cant help but think when I compose these
communal addresses, What kind of legacy do I want to leave?
I have similar thoughts, by the way, with my own children each
time I tuck them in at night, or bless them on Shabbat and the
holidays.
In fact, its an interesting question each of us must answer:
When our time is up on this earth, what kind of legacy do we
want to leave? What do we want our family and friends to say
about us when our time has passed? For some, their legacy is se-
cured by an ethical will. An ethical will is a document in
which you write down your prayers, hopes, lessons, and wis-
dom for those who come after you. e ethical will is an op-
portunity to share your innermost thoughts and feelingsyour
desires for those you lovewithout having to hope that your
family and friends understood. For all of us, our legacy is se-
cured by the mitzvot weve done: reaching out to the poor and
needy; strengthening of our synagogue community; sharing
Shabbat and holiday celebrations with family.
We are in the midst of the counting of the Omer, which
began on the second night of Passover. On the 50th day of
counting, this year the evening of May 14, we begin the holiday
of Shavuot. Shavuot marks the giving of the Torah to the Jew-
ish people: the transmission of law and lore, wisdom and com-
passion, from one generation to another. e Torah and its
interpretations represent the legacy of our ancestorsthe teach-
ings and laws they hoped we would learn, embrace, and prac-
tice. To it we must add our own understandings as well and
ensure that we pass it on to future generations.
During this season in which we celebrate the transmission of
Sacred Scripture from one generation to another, let us be sure
that we share with the next generation our own personal wis-
dom, priorities, passions, and commitment to Judaism. Your
legacyand the legacy of the Jewish peopledepend on it.

COHENS
CORNER
A
ll good things must come to an end. The past two
years have flown by and I can honestly say not only
have I grown in so many ways, but I have also made so
many wonderful friends from my experience as Sisterhood
president. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to
lead this dynamic organization and for supporting Sister-
hood and me when I called you for help. I could not have
done this without the help of my wonderful board and
past presidents. Thank you all!
During the past two years, we have laughed and
learned together. We have had interesting education
classes with Cantor Finkelstein, Breast Cancer doctors,
Hebrew literacy taught by our very own Sisterhood mem-
bers, cooking demonstrations by Annabel Cohen, a
mixology lesson, two active book clubs, and a mikvah
class with Rebecca Starr. Weve had two exotic intoxicat-
ing Vashti Banquets, Torah Fund lunches, a fashion show,
and a Girls Pamper Night out. We collaborated with the
shul to initiate the first Game Day, cooked amazing
kugels, helped facilitate our weekly Ruach Central com-
munity Shabbat lunch, and Yom Tov observances. Of
course, there is also our premier fundraiser, the Lois
Linden Nelson Womans World with shopping, lunch,
and a stimulating speaker! We have donated to at least 20
different charities either in the community or Israel, sent
our college students a small gift for Chanukah, sponsored
JARC and Jewish Vocational Service lunches, helped a
child go to camp, delivered Yad Ezra groceries to those in
need, and helped start an Egalitarian Young Adult Friday
night Minyan. We just purchased a beautiful new
commercial dishwasher for our kitchen and we are most
excited about our next gift to the synagogue, a state-of-
the-art sound system for the sanctuary.
I look forward to seeing you at our Lois Linden Nelson
Womans World event on May 1 to hear chief CNN
White House Correspondent, Jessica Yellin, and Sister-
hood Shabbat on May 11. On May 28, we will welcome
our new incoming president, Robin Lash with a beautiful
installation program. Mazel tov to Robin! We are so proud
to have you as our next leader!
Thank you all once again!
Linda

ursdays, April 4, 11, 18, 25, May 2, 9

ere is no question more central to life, perhaps, than what happens when it ends. Many grew
up learning little to nothing about what Judaism teaches regarding the afterlife. Why? What does
Judaism teach about Heaven and Hell; the nature of the soul; bodily resurrection, the messianic
era, communing with the dead; the importance to the deceased of kaddish; and why are many
liberal Jewseven rabbisafraid to discuss it?
