Functions:
Enhance link availability through fast, low-loss dedicated alloptical protection switching
PRODUCT OVERVIEW
The APS4301 is an all-optical, low-loss protection module for bidirectional fiber-pair links. APS4301 is qualified to support IBMs GDPS timing links requirements. This is a 1-slot width plug-in module for the LightLEADER 4000 platform
Applications:
Bidirectional Truck Protection in Disaster Recovery of Distributed Processing/SAN Applications Dual-ended Bi-directional Fiber (Trunk) Protection Principle of Operation
The APS4301 provides bi-directional protection to bi-directional fiber pair links. It connects a set of fibers (Main) to one of two redundant sets of fiber pairs (Working and Protection). Under normal conditions, the Main set is connected to the Working ports. Upon failure of one or two of the Working fibers, the system switches both fiber-pairs automatically to the Protection link. Both automatic and operator induced switchover operations are supported.
Features:
Programmable optical power level threshold: Two threshold levels (SD,LOS) User-selected Revert modes: Automatic reversion Manual reversion Operator switching commands Continuous monitoring for SF (LOS/SD) of: Working & Protection links Client input (optional)
Programmable Thresholds
APS4301 continuously monitors optical signals of both Working and Protection links. Two levels of user programmable thresholds are supported: one is used for SD (Signal Degraded) alarm and lower threshold level used for LOS (Loss of Signal) alarm and automatic switchover triggering. Thresholds have built-in hysteresis to prevent oscillations during boundary conditions
Latching-system remains in its manual revert mode. In automatic revert mode, the system last position during power failure
Benefits
Future proof; data rate, protocol & format transparency

Fast recovery switchover under 50 msec prevents network trauma & timeouts. Carries traffic during power outage. Continuously monitors & reports optical signal health on all links so users can take preventive actions Threshold configuration tools simplify installation. Threshold levels can be modified to meet specific deployment needs.

APPLICATION EXAMPLES Bidirectional Truck Protection for Disaster Recovery of Distributed Processing/SAN Applications
The figure below describes an IBM GDPS (Geographically Dispersed Parallel Sysplex) application as an example of an application using DWDM bi-directional truck protection. This application supports real-time mirroring to storage devices at both locations over synchronized mainframe computing resources over metro distances. In this application bi-directional protection is absolutely required to maintain clock distribution coherency. In specific the IBM sysplex timer requires equal Tx and Rx latency differential (delta length < 10meters).
