Abstract
SecondlanguageanxietyhasadebilitatingeffectontheoralperformanceofspeakersofEnglishasa secondlanguage.Thisarticledescribesaresearchprojectconcerningtheconceptualizationofsecond languagespeakinganxiety,therelationshipbetweenanxietyandsecondlanguageperformance,andthe majorreportedcausesofsecondlanguageanxiety.TheparticipantsinthisstudywereadvancedEnglish foracademicpurposes(EAP)studentsstudyingonintensiveEAPcoursesimmediatelypriortoentering Australianuniversities(N=275).Thesecondlanguagespeakinganxietyscale(SLSAS)wasdeveloped forthestudy.Thisinstrumentprovidedevidenceforadualconceptualizationofanxietyreflectingboth oralcommunicationwithinandoutsidethelanguagelearningclassroom.Thescalewasvalidatedusing confirmatoryfactoranalysis.Theanalysisindicatedsecondlanguagespeakinganxietytobea significantpredictoroforalachievement.Reportedcausesofanxietywereinvestigatedthrough interviews.Theresultsindicatethatthemostfrequentsourceofanxietywasinteractingwithnative speakers.Evidencefortwotypesofanxiouslanguagelearneremerged;retrievalinterferenceandskills deficit.TherewasanindicationfromthestudythatEnglishlanguagelearnersfromConfucianHeritage Cultures(CHCs),China,KoreaandJapanweremoreanxiouslanguagelearnersthanotherethnic groups.
