Brochure
Description:
Fun, attractive brochure for a business of choice.

Date:

Course:
Visual Media; Eric Lybbert

Program(s) / Tools used: Objectives:

Adobe Indesign, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop

Set up and align a two-sided, folded document. Create an original company logo and use it in a brochure. Incorporate quality images.

Process:

I started this project in InDesign and first set up my folds for each page. I then placed a previous logo of the business on the front cover of the brochure to make a front fold with the two images connecting in the middle. After the front page I started working on the inside of the brochure. I placed three photos and then went into photoshop and enlarged one of the photos and put it into InDesign again. This picture was also used for the text wrap around the body copy of the text. I then created the text and placed it into the orange boxes. I used the colors orange and brown to create repetition between the logo and the text. It also allows for a good flow between text boxes. Lastly I created the back of the brochure by designing a roof that encompassed the sides of the front. I then placed another logo on the back for brand recognition.

Stationery
Description:
Stationery of a local business of choice, using its logo and watermark.

Date:
3/2/13

Course:
Visual Media; Eric Lybbert

Program(s) / Tools used:

Adobe Illustrator and InDesign

Objectives:
Create a new logo to fit a company or personal image. Design consistent layouts for a business card and letterhead. Use the basic tools of Illustrator & InDesign.

Process:

I placed the new logo on the page near the upper left corner of the page. I then clicked the text tool and typed the name and corresponding contact information. To create contrast amongst the text I typed the name in old style font at 12 point bold font. The remaining information was then set at a sans serif 8 point font, I kept both font colors at brown. After typing I then placed the type near the opposite right hand corner of the page. I then connected the logo and information by creating a double thin stroke line at 4 width between the two objects. I also changed the color of the line to a matching orange to the font and to create flow between the two images. I then copied and pasted an identical line at the bottom of the page and aligned it to the logo and text. Lastly for the letterhead I placed a watermark aligned to the right side, the watermark was of the large u with roof logo. I kept the opacity at 4 due to the darker colors of the water mark.

Business Cards
Description:
One sided business card using the logo of the chosen business.

Date:

Process:

I first opened a new rectangle and selected the size to be 3.5x2. I placed two rectangles for a front and back of the business card. The first thing I did was go back into Illustrator to create copies of the logo but just the two main letters, U and G. I then placed a the logo of just the U and G on the lower business card. I then copied the same text from the letter head and stroke line and pasted them on the lower business card. I created another rectangle in the box to give it an outline look on the card. Then on the first card I pasted again the entire logo to the page and sized and placed that logo accordingly on the business card. I finally added another rectangle in the first box to create uniformity and repetition with both sides of the card.

Logos
Description: Date:
2/23/13 Design and create three differenct logos for the same company.

Course:
Visual Media; Eric Lybbert

Program(s) / Tools used:

Adobe Illustrator

Objectives:
Create a variety of logos to fit a company or personal image. Use the basic tools of Illustrator.

Process:

First I started off by using the text tool and made the letters U and G. Then I tired to add an

incorporating image in the back. I used the rectangle tool and first drew the base of a house, added a roof by selecting the pen tool and added new points that created the roof. I again used the rectangle tool to create a porch overhang, extended window, and small chimney. The second logo I again tried to incorporate a roof shape with the letters of the company. After creating the roof with chimney, I then placed the letters underneath the roof as if to be the foundation for the house. The text color was changed to a light orange to contrast the black roof. The third image I started by drawing a long horizontal rectangle and then another vertical rectangle. I combined them together to help create the image of the drain pipe (gutter) coming off of a home and descending to the ground. I then created another smaller horizontal rectangle and connected that to bottom of the pipe and created points to give a fading look to the pipe at the opposite ends.

UG

Web Page
Description: Date:
3/16/13 Web page created using textwrangler and css.

Course:
Visual Media; Eric Lybbert

Program(s) / Tools used:

TextWrangler and Photoshop

Objectives:
Size and optimize an original logo as a .png for a web page. Write content to describe the process of creating your logo and how it appeals to a target audience. Design a web page using HTML to display the logo and content. Acquire a working knowledge of HTML and basic understanding of CSS. Identify hex colors for web design. Compress multiple files in a zipped folder to attach as one file.

Process:

I created this webpage and logo using TextWrangler and photoshop. I first incorporated a previous logo and put that into Textwrangler in my html. While working in Textwrangler, I created the Html and described the logo accordingly. After the html was finished I then worked on the CSS. During this process I changed the fonts, font sizes, and the colors of the font. The two title fonts I made them substantially larger than the body text. I created unity and flow by making both titles the same size and color. The body text was changed to brown to match the logo and the border. I then increased the top brown border to create more space on that title. I also increased the space between the bullets and new paragraphs. I also centered the logo in the middle of the page. Lastly I changed the border around the body to a two lined border instead of one solid line.

Imaging

Program(s) / Tools used: Objectives:

Learn basic photography skills.

Cannon Powershot Camera and Adobe Photoshop

Use a digital camera to take a quality image, then download it. Size and crop the image. Adjust image brightness, contrast, hue and saturation levels. Use a selection tool to isolate a portion of the image. Desaturate the selected portion of the image. Use a filter or colorize a portion of the image.

Process:

I took this image using a point and shoot camera and then loaded it into Photoshop. After that I resized the image to a 6x6 and then cropped the image so the plants and water bucket were much closer than in the original image. After all the cropping and re-sizing, I then selected the bucket and the plant nearest to the bucket using the quick selection tool. I minimized the quick selection tool so that I could select the small branches of the plant. After selecting these two images I desaturated the background color. Then with the plant and bucket still selected I changed the color using the color balance technique. I changed the color using shadowing and highlighting colors as well. The final step I took was applying a filter on the bucket and plant. The filter I chose was the oil paint option under the filter tab.

Montage
Description: Date:
2/16/13 The combination of two photos, one being a bolt of lightening and the other being the rising sun. Together they were combined to create the contrast between light and darkness.

Course:
Visual Media; Eric Lybbert

Program(s) / Tools used:

Adobe Photoshop CS6

Objectives:
Learn to manage Photoshop layers. Learn to blend images together smoothly, using masks. Use filters. Apply appropriate typography.

Process:

I found two images on the internet, I then cropped both images to 11x8.5 and then used the lightening picture as the background. I also flipped the background picture vertically and flipped the sun picture horizontally. I selected the sun pictured and dragged it to the lightening image and then sized the sun picture to have the sun coming out of the corner of the picture. I then selected a layer on the sun picture and chose a brush at 100% opacity and brought the original lightening image to the front. Then selecting a larger brush and lower capacity around 25%, I brought the sun picture back and blended the two pictures together. I then lowered the capacity again to 5% and gradually smoothed out the areas to make them flow well. I then selected the background layer and applied two filters, the first being paint dubs. The second filter I chose was palette knife and I used this to blur the clouds. I then applied a filter to the first layer and chose paint dubs again to help blend the two images together. After the filtering of the images I drew a text box. I changed the colors of the words, darkest and light to create distinction between the main words. After that I applied a very lite drop shadow for the text helping the words pop against the background.

Program(s) / Tools used:

Word and Epson scanner

Objectives:
Find, scan and import a high-quality image. Create a full-bleed design Use text boxes for layout in Word. Insert and edit images in Word.

Process:

I first created a sketch of how I wanted the image to look. Then I scanned the image into the computer. After scanning the image I opened word and first started creating the text boxes and placing them according to my sketch. After the text boxes were set, I then placed the picture to left of the ad. I originally used black fill in the two boxes touching the picture but realized it made the image too dark and was difficult to see. After that I replaced the black with green color and lightened up the original picture with a green glow that matched the other green boxes. I used diagonal and horizontal lines to help maintain repetition and flow on the ad.

Flier
Description:
Flier promoting a conference through Vouant communications.

Date:
1/26/13

Course:
Visual Media; Eric Lybbert

Program(s) / Tools used:

Adobe Indesign

Objectives:
Apply the design principles and use appropriate typography. Incorporate basic InDesign skills to improve basic flier layout. Retrieve image and logo from links on this page. Create a project folder with image, logo and InDesign document to keep links intact.

Process:

The process first started with a few sketches which allowed me to visualize what I thought would look best on the flier. I created repetition throughout the flier by using a dark rectangles over white text. Then using contrast I used a white font for the title against the black background and super-sized the letter c in the title and changed the font to a script. Creating repetition I used black rectangles again with the proceeding subtitle and also at the bottom to help draw the attention of the readers to each area. Repetition was also used throughout the body paragraph by enlarging the word conference. I did this again to draw the eyes of the beholder to the body paragraph and website. I tried leaving white space between sentences and the bottom of the flier to keep the flier more simple and less cluttered. All images and text were provided for the project.
