LaShan Allen Collection Evaluation and Development Plan FRIT 7134 March 4, 2012 DESCRIPTION OF THE SITE / ENVIRONMENTAL

SCAN I teach special education at Statesboro High School. Statesboro High School is the home to about 1450 students. There is also approximately 160 faculty and staff that educate these students on a daily basis. Statesboro High School opened during the 2008/2009 school year and is a state of the art two level facility that serves the student body as well as the Statesboro community. Statesboro High School is one of the three high schools in the Bulloch County School System that has a total of 14 schools. There are four teachers including myself that work with the self-contained special needs students that are intellectually challenged. The four of us serve / teach approximately 25 students from grades 9th through 12th that have either moderate or severe cognitive deficits in all areas. The media center at Statesboro High school has only two shelves of books that are either nonfiction or fiction books about using and maintaining credit. A closer look at the choices of books that would be appropriate for special needs students that have cognitive deficits narrows the choices down to one complete shelf of books. However, there is a three disc video series on managing and understanding personal finances that include segments on credit and credit worthiness. All of the 25 students that are in the self-contained classes because of their cognitive deficits read and write at the third grade level. The media center at Statesboro High School and all the other media centers in the county utilize a book and / or resources lending program in which if an item is not available at one media center, a simple search via the school systems server will locate the item at another media center. However, because finances (economics) are a high school concept, the other two media

centers only have comparable resources similar to what Statesboro High School has. Hence aside from the one or two shelves and the DVD three disc series, the personal fianc section is in need of a reboot and a surplus. CURRICULUM REVIEW / MAPPING For this collection and evaluation assignment, I have decided to use economics as my primary focus. I will be primarily focusing on managing credit and managing finances. Economics is a high school course for high school age students earning Carnegie units. However, for this collection and evaluation assignment, I will be focusing on special education students and their life skills classroom. The Georgia Performance Standards that I will be using and modifying for the special needs population are: SSEPF1: The student will apply rational decision making to personal spending and saving choices. a. Explain that people respond to positive and negative incentives in predictable ways. b. Use a rational decision making model to select one option over another. c. Create a savings or financial investment plan for a future goal. SSEPF4: The student will evaluate the costs and benefits of using credit. a. List factors that affect credit worthiness. b. Compare interest rates on loans and credit cards from different institutions. c. Explain the difference between simple and compound interest rates. SSEPF6: The student will describe how the earnings of workers are determined in the marketplace. a. Identify skills that are required to be successful in the workplace. b. Explain the significance of investment in education, training, and skill development.

COLLECTION EVALUATION Before I could decide what to order, I first had to determine what was already in place in our media center at Statesboro High School. The media center is very trendy with the layout of the resources. The typical Dewey decimal system is in full force and the computer work stations are strategically placed throughout the media center. Fiction books and novels are housed along the wall of the media center, and there are two rows of fiction books adjacent to the computer work stations that house more common books. The books are arranged in alphabetical order. Reference books, ebooks, books on tape, and things as such (DVDs, VHSs) are housed in a separate area from the fiction books. However, non-fiction books are housed on four tall rows that utilize the Dewey decimal system, and the books are arranged in alphabetical order. I discovered the section in which I was most interested in for this project to be section 332. I used the media centers online directory to locate the books that would guide my project. Fortunately, I found most of these books in one primary section of the media center. All the books needed were on the shelves in the correct location. The newest book in this category of financial books was dated 2001. I was surprised by this because 2001 was over a decade ago, and it seems these sections of books are somewhat outdated. Moreover, these books looked to be in good condition which suggests they do not circulate a lot. There seemed to be more non-fiction books on finances and credit and less fiction books on the subject. However, many fiction books talked about finances and credit as smaller parts to their storyline. The non-fiction books were too advanced for the special needs students to comprehend. They were books that were for grade level students wanting to understand finances and credit and how to maintain both. Special needs students at the high school level need books and resources that are modified enough to their level of comprehension in order for successes to

take place. The DVD collection of finances and money management seemed very useful to the special needs students but the collection is in high circulation and one of the discs has been misplaced. There needs to be more relevant resources about finances for special needs students. These resources should be in print and non-print formats. Resources should go beyond the one /two shelving section that currently houses the bulk of the resources. Resources should also be kept and inventoried periodically to ensure that all required components are kept in place for future uses. Resources should be a varying grade levels so that a wide range of students with differing abilities can successfully use the resources. Finally, resources should be current and support current trends on finances and credit and money management.

BUDGET SUMMARY Finding information about managing finances and maintaining credit is very difficult to do when you are looking for below level resources for special needs students. However, after

diligently searching, materials were found that are content and level appropriate for special needs students to acquire personal financial skills. PCI Education has a wealth of resources directly geared for special needs students. The consumer math products from this vendor specifically address deficits found in special needs students while at the same time teaching relevant content. Follett /Titlewave have a ton of resources that are content relevant and geared towards the elementary learner which is where this group of students cognitive ranges lie. Finally, Amazon.com has a wealth of resources as well to use. Suze Orman is a financial whiz and her series of books can be used with people of all ages and abilities. Even though the budget was allotted for $4000, around $3500 is sufficient to build this collection. General website information that I used in compiling my order can be found on my pbworks page at lallen0425.pbworks.com.
