Passage Master Your job is to locate a few special passages that are important in the reading assignment.

These may give key information, they may back up the information given, or summarize the authors key points. They might also be passages that strike your fancy for some reason, are particularly well written, or might be controversial or contradictory with other passages or other information learned in class. You may read passages aloud, ask others to read them, or have the circle read them silently and then discuss them. 1. One more time: How do you motivate employees? Page and paragraph Page 2, Paragraph 4 on right column Reason for picking the passage: The author compares employees to a year-old Schnauzer and using the positive KITA method to entice employees to do their job. It is an example of how the author views reward incentives as a motivator to get the job done. Plan for Reading it: I plan to read the passage with a brief introduction of the idea of Positive KITA. I will give emphasis on the comparison the author made between employees and dogs. First line or two of the passage: I have a year-old Schnauzer. When it was a small puppy and I wanted it to move, I kicked it in the rear and it moved. Now that I have finished its obedience training, I hold up a dog biscuit when I want the Schnauzer to move 2. The entire reading has been about how to improve the board to evolve beyond just a governing board that attends strict meetings on a set time table. The goal of the article has been about how to improve the board and the relationship between the board and the constituents. This passage shows what would be the result if the board does not effectively do their job correctly. In addition, this seems to contradict the teachings that a governing board is what is needed in a successful nonprofit. Plan for Reading it: Introduce the passage with the quote governing boards are among the least innovative, least flexible elements of many nonprofits then read the passage. Foster the discussion on what could be done to prevent the passage from coming true. First line or two of the passage: Too often, trustees assume that organizational success proves that the board has performed well, even when there is little evidence that the board played a significant role, and even when staff members say privately that the success was achieved despite the board 4. Nonprofit Organizations Principles and Practices Page and paragraph: Page 126; Paragraph 3 Reason for picking the passage: The passage summaries the entire chapter. Plan for Reading it: Introduce the paragraph stating the entire chapter was over motivating employees, developing a volunteer program, diversifying staff, accommodating employees with disabilities, dealing with sexual harassment, and provide a family-friendly workplace. First line or two of the passage: In conclusion, finding ways to improve morale and job satisfaction for people who work or volunteer in nonprofit organization is important to its success 5. The Nonprofit Handbook Page and paragraph: Page 123; paragraph 4 Reason for picking the passage: Highlights the importance of having a detailed Human Resource policy and guidelines on handling staff procedures and policies. Plan for Reading it: Introduce the following before reading the paragraph. Managing staff is a difficult process. You have to define the need for staff, hire the staff, evaluate the staffs performance, discipline the staff for misconduct, and/or fire the staff. First line or two of the passage:

Each hired employee is an investment by a nonprofit not only in the salary paid to him or her. The chemistry of an organization is changed by a new hire, and bad hiring decisions can haunt a nonprofit for many years or destroy it completely.

So, I think that I did the assignment wrong. The way I posted my part does not facilitate discussion at all. That being said, I am re-posting my part to see if it helps facilitate discussion.

In The New Work of the Nonprofit Board it discusses the work that matters for nonprofit boards. The passage on page 2; paragraph 4 shows a great summary on what is new work. In addition to the previous passage, in the New Work of the Nonprofit Board we see a process about how to improve the board of evolve beyond just a governing board that attends strict meetings on a set time table. The goal of the article has been about how to improve the board and the relationship between the board and the constituents. What do you think of the conclusion made by Holland and Rivto? Did you feel that each section was explained enough?

The last passage that Im going to bring up is from The Nonprofit Handbook. According to the chapter managing staff is a difficult process. You have to define the need for staff, hire the staff, evaluate the staffs performance, discipline the staff for misconduct, and/or fire the staff. Because of everything that is involved when a nonprofit takes on staff it is extremely important to have a detailed human resource policy and guideline on handling staff procedures and policies. The passage that you should read it on page 123; paragraph 4 and starts with Each hired employee is an investment by a nonprofit not only in the salary paid to him or her. The chemistry of an organization is changed by a new hire, and bad hiring decisions can haunt a nonprofit for many years or destroy it completely. What do you think about the importance of having a human resource plan? Have you been in an instance where you job did not have adequate HR plan to handle work situations?
