Generations of Generosity by Rev. Clay Stauffer, Senior Minister

Here is a timeless truth the church continues to count on the generosity and commitment of its members to make ministry possible. The only way we can do all the things that we do here at Woodmont is through each of our gifts. Traditional worship, contemporary worship, small groups, music ministries, Bible study, pastoral care, Stephen's ministry, children's ministry, youth ministry, young adult ministry, adult education, mission trips, outreach grants, Walk thru Bethlehem, Habitat Builds, Room In the Inn, Nashville Food Project, Morgan Scott Project, building maintenance, heat and AC, electric bills, you name it we all play a role in supporting Woodmont. This summer, we will celebrate the 70th birthday of our church. For generations now, the generosity of Woodmont members has moved our church forward year after year. Our spring stewardship campaign "Generations of Generosity" is now under way and we will have commitment Sunday on April 28th. I ask you to please prayerfully consider making a financial commitment to support the mission and ministry of Woodmont in the upcoming year. We count on pledge commitments so that we can plan our budget accordingly and responsibly. It is always

easy to sit back and say, "Somebody else will pay for it. Besides, other people have more money than me." However, if everybody did that, where would the church be? As Christians, we should take the words and teachings of Jesus seriously and he had a lot to say about the subject of money and generosity and how it is tied to the spiritual life. In the Sermon on the Mount he reminds us, "Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also." (Matt 6:21). I am also encouraging you to join me in reading Adam Hamilton's book Enough: Discovering Joy Through Simplicity and Generosity. We have copies available at SpireBooks or you can download it for your kindle or ipad. Megan and I give sacrificially to this church because we believe whole-heartedly in our mission and in what we are doing on this corner and beyond. Woodmont changes lives every day! Please join me in helping support and move our church forward. Blessings,

A Word From Jay & Meredith Hollomon Stewardship Chairs

Dear Woodmont Member, How do I pledge a commitment? The coming fiscal year represents the 70th Anniversary of Woodmont Christian Church. We have enjoyed the good fortune of growth in numbers and long-standing impact to our community. Thanks to each of you and those before us, we continue to grow in our mission and in our faith. We appreciate your contribution of time, talent and treasure to our rich history. Our church family has been blessed over the years to support ministries and initiatives that make a critical difference in our community. In celebration of this milestone, the theme of the 2013-2014 Stewardship Campaign is "Generations of Generosity." During the month of April, culminating with Commitment Sunday on April 28th, commitment cards will be collected in the offering plate. A commitment card is enclosed and you can find one in the pew pocket. Pledges can also be submitted electronically on the website www.woodmontchristian.org or emailed to pledge@woodmontcc.org.

Matthew 6:21 says, "Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also." Since joining Woodmont several years ago, we've proudly participated in the Stewardship Campaign and gladly made our commitment this past week. Please join us in Why make a commitment? committing to Woodmont and continuing the strong tradition of generosity started 70 years ago. Feel free to contact either of us The programs, services and ministries of Woodmont can only or the church office with any questions regarding the be accomplished with the financial commitments of members Campaign. like yourself. Each of these ministries requires financing and must be planned in advance. The Finance Committee relies on Blessings, commitments from members to assess current programs and plan for the coming year. Ideally, every family unit is encouraged to participate in the campaign to help us accomplish our mission.

An Act of the Apostles by Thom Schuyler, Youth Director

The Season of Lent, the Solemnity of Holy Week and the Celebration of Easter Morning are now recent and beautiful memories. I commend my spirited co-workers and this committed congregation for coming together in so many ways to open your hearts to the Power of the Resurrection! However, this is not the time to slip into spiritual indifference. Let us be reminded that Christ's Church was very much founded and premised upon the forty days following Easter In Acts 1:3 Luke begins his account of the earliest days of The Church by stating "He presented Himself to them and offered many convincing proofs that He was alive appearing to them over a period of forty days." In I Corinthians 15 Paul tells us that the resurrected Jesus appeared to over 500 people in one setting. It is inconceivable to me that a movement as profound and long-lasting as Christianity would have found its footing without the Reality of the Resurrection. Simply put, it was life-threatening to be an early believer, day in and day out, week-after-week, non-stop. Facing a sword, a spear, starvation, wild animals, fire, crucifixion and all manner of unspoken horrors, they must have witnessed something extraordinary and that something was a man that had defeated the grave. Within such a dangerous environment it is logical that this small community of believers remained committed to one another. They met together daily to pray and share meals and were careful to ensure that everyone was safe and had their basic needs provided. Once again, Luke offers the context: "All believers were together and had everything in common. They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need" (Acts 2:44-45). This is the humble beginning of the faith that we continue to embrace so many centuries on. We live in a very different world, of course. Drive down any major thoroughfare in Nashville, with a church or two on every corner, and it is abundantly clear that we are free to worship as we choose. But the fundamental practices of that early church are still vitally important and it has been my observation that we carry on those traditions exceedingly well at Woodmont: we come together regularly for prayer and meditation, share meals and do an excellent job of taking care of our own (and many beyond our immediate community). Amen! As we each consider the commitment we can make on Stewardship Sunday may The Lord open our eyes to the needs within our walls, in our local community and across the globe. Let us be generous with every kind of resource we have been given. xo - Thom

Tears by Mary Clare Pyron, Parish Nurse

I read once that tears connect the body with the soul in a way few things can. I think this is profound. Tears are the body's physical response to emotion. Some people cry when they are happy, and others cry when they are sad. For both types of people, tears are a result of being overcome with emotion. Tears are not something to be ashamed of, but instead they are a gift that allows us to more fully experience our emotions. I think at times tears, especially tears of sadness, allow us to connect with God. When we feel broken, tears may be the only thing we have left to give and serve as a prayer. Tears are a beautiful expression of love, happiness, sorrow, and pain. They are pure and innocent and help us to connect with what remains pure and innocent in each of us. ~Mary Clare

Meeting attendees were both appalled at the problem and proud of Margie's tremendous efforts in educating both law enforcement and the public about it.
