Toxicity Card-Ammonium Nitrate

Toxicity The nitrogen oxide gases (except nitrous oxide) emitted on decomposition are extremely toxic. Emergency Treatment and Measures Hygienic Precautions When exposed to nitrogen oxide due to decomposition at high temperatures. Physician should give individuals treatment.

Fire precautions

Flood with sufficient amount of water in early stage of fire. When large quantities of Ammonium Nitrate are involved in advanced or massive fires, control efforts should be confined to further exposures. Fire fighting personnel should secure hose nozzles in fixed position or set up unmanned portable or fixed turrets and then withdraw to a safe location. Consideration must be given to chance contamination of Ammonium Nitrate with oil, charcoal or other combustible and sensitizing substances, with possible explosion of the entire mass. Because of this potential, the surrounding area should be evacuated. Exercise extreme caution in application of water on fused or molten material to avoid eruptive scattering and spreading of fire.
