UP Manila chancellor gets teary-eyed on Kristel suicide and claims that they are not that ruthless The UP Manila chancellor broke down in tears Monday while explaining that they had not been "ruthless" on the case of Kristel Tejada, a Behavioral Sciences student who committed suicide after reportedly being forced to go on leave because her family could not afford to pay tuition. UP Manila chancellor Manuel Agulto said at a press briefing that their compassion has been questioned a lot in the media and they have been portrayed as cold-hearted and ruthless. Agulto paused and got teary-eyed as he recalled his own years of financial hardship while studying at UP, where he eventually graduated with a degree in medicine. Agulto said that UP Manila did what it could and If only he knew the extent of her difficulties, he personally would have attended to her needs," Tejada, 16, committed suicide on March 15 allegedly due to financial difficulties that forced her to file a leave of absence this semester. Agulto added that they do not wish to give anyone a difficult time. They dream for them as they aspire for their future... They do not wish to pose obstacles in realizing their dreams,". In a memorandum, UP Manila implemented a forced leave of absence rule for students who are unable to enroll for any reason, such as poor health or financial difficulties. However, UP officials said Tejada filed her leave properly, indicating that she wanted to continue her studies next year. Nash: Meanwhile, Mikhail:Nothing beats the summer heat. Can you feel the intense heat brought by summer? I bet you do. For health news, DOH Warns Public on summer Diseases With the temperature starting to heat up, the Department of Health (DOH) yesterday warned the public against summer diseases. Health Assistant Secretary PaulynUbial said the most common illnesses of summer are sore eyes and heat stroke. -We can avoid sore eyes by constant hand washing. Ideally, wash your hands 20 times a day, especially before eating and after coming out of the comfort room, Ubial said.

She said through constant and proper hand washing, one could prevent contracting other diseases as well. The DOH also advises against touching the eyes and face with dirty hands, sharing of personal things like towels, eyeglasses, make-up, and reusing of handkerchief. - Dr. May Ann Sta.Lucia, regional Health Emergency Management Staff coordinator and Regional Blood Program Coordinator, said the DOH has mounted an extensive campaign to address summer health threats. Foremost among summer maladies is heat stroke, which is caused by dehydration and usually characterized by warm/flushed skin, faintness and dizziness, among others. Heat stroke can be prevented by drinking plenty of water, limiting time spent outside and wearing widebrimmed hat/long-sleeved clothing. This condition is considered to be a medical emergency and it is advised to bring the patient to the hospital after instituting emergency measures. Food poisoning, which is also rampant during the summer season, is caused by food left in the open and exposed to heat which hastens the growth of bacteria. Other causes are unhygienic practices, unsafe sources of drinking water and unsafe food handling. If a suspected case of food-borne illness arises, it is recommended that food evidence be preserved and to seek treatment as necessary.
