VIETNAM STANDARD

TCVN 50701995

Water quality- weight method for determination of oil and oil product:
1. Application scope This standard used for determining oil and oil product (hereafter in oil) in natural waters with concentration from 0.3 mg. 2. Principle of method Use clorofom to separate oil and oil product from water, distilling to eliminate solven, weighing for quantitativeness. Using hexan to dissolve oil products and crossing gas color column containing oxygen aluminum then separating them from polarization substances that those are not carbonate unity in the oil, eliminating solven, weighing for quantitativeness. 3. Tools and reagent 3.1. Tools Flask, capacity 3000ml Separating funnel 500ml Triangle container, capacity 500ml Weighing glass, capacity 25ml Small flask, capacity 20ml Mixer Analysis scale with the accuracy 0.1mg Glassed gas color column, diameter 10 mm-10ml 3.2. Reagent Clorofom or carbonate tetraclorua, type TKHH Hexan (C6H14) TKHH Soldering acid (HCl) TKHH Oxygen aluminum(Al2O3) TKHH 4. Sampling method Using cleaned sampling tube and being coated with clorofom in order to take the water sample so as to surface water does not go into the tube. The number of samples used for analyzing is 3 liters per time, fixing the obtained samples with clorofom. Then, it should extract immediately. Note that: it should not filter the sample, it must use all water in the container for separation (3 liters), the obtained element can be preserved for 10 days in closed container on good and cool condition. 5. Preparation for determination Before analyzing, it must perform the followings: 5.1. Oxygen aluminum (Al2O3) is grinded smoothly, screening with sieve with hole diameter of 0.1 mm and being baked at degree of 6000C for 4 hours. 5.2. Preparing gas color column of oxygen aluminum Putting 6g of oxygen treated aluminum under Item 4.1 into the glass with the capacity 500ml, adding 10ml of hexan then fixing equally. Taking them into glass gas color column after coating

Internal Technical Document about 1 cm of glass cotton under the column. During the stuffing time of oxygen aluminum, the valve of column must open, after transferring all oxygen aluminum to the column and hexan solution reaches the oxygen aluminum surface, valve is closed. In order to avoid the evaporation of solven, using the watch window to cover the column. 6. Determination 6.1. Separating oil and oil product from water. 6.1.1. Putting 3 liters of water sample need analyzing into the flask. Using soldering acid with capacity of 1.19 oxidizing the water sample to pH less than 5. Putting 150 ml of clofom or carbon tetracclorua into that. 6.1.2 Putting the wing of mixer 5cm from the bedding limit toward the organics solven , mixing for minutes then decanting most of water into the other container with the same capacity, the rest transferred to extracting funnel with the capacity of 500ml, bedding for 15 minutes, extracting the solven with oil into the triangular container so as to the immediate layer does not fall into that. Transferring this with extracted water into the flask used for the first time. Adding this 150 ml of clorofom and do the extraction as the last time. Extracting the solven with oil into the triangular container with the first time obtained product. Eliminating water and immediate layer. Using 50 ml clorofom to coat the extracting funnel and transferring the triangular container. 6.2. Determining oil and oil product 6.2.1. Putting the triangular container with extracted product into the brain marine cook. Connecting the container with condenser and boiling to obtain clorofom. When there is bout 10-20 ml of sample in the container, stopping boiling and getting cold. 6.2.2. Putting the triangular container into the attracting cabinet. Putting fan about 35 cm from the attracting cabinet. Pouring rapidly solution from the triangular container into the scale glass with specific volume so as to the solution occupies about maximum of the capacity. After solution being completely poured, using a small quantity of clorofom to coat the container for the third time then let them being evaporated. When there is about 0.5 ml sample in the glass, stop fanning and continue to let the solution being evaporated in the air with unchanged quantity. Testing by putting glass into the scale with about 1 to 2 minutes per time. Oil quantity and products containing sample (C1), calculated by mg, with the quantity of glass with analyzed substance subtracted the glass weight. 6.3. Determining oil products 6.3.1 Putting 2ml of hexan in to scale glass containing obtained product according to Item 5.2.2. Then rapidly transferring then to gas color column already prepared according to Item 4.2. Under the column. Laying a small container with specific weight in order in order to obtain the solution with the column . It should adjust valve of gas color column so as to flowing speed not exceed 0.3ml per minute. Using a small quantity of haxan to coat the glass for three times, after the glass being coated, it should be gone through gas color column. Using haxen to coat the column for 3 times; 1ml for each time then attracting all into the small. The solution should be maintained above the oxygen layer during the process. 6.3.2. Taking from the haxan until it reaches the unchangeable quantity in the flask as that of clorofom (Item 5.2.2). The quantity of oil product in the sample (C 2) with be calculated with mg, with the flask weight with analyzed substance subtracted the weight of flask.

Internal Technical Document 7. Result calculation: 7.1. Strength of oil and product Cx. with be calculated with mg/l determined under the formula : C1 x 100 Cx = V Of which: C1: oil quantity and oil product in the sample; mg; V: Capacity of water sample, ml.

7.2. Strength of oil product C y, calculated with mg/l, determined under the formula:
C2 x 1000 Cy = V Of which: C2 oil product quantity in the sample, mg: V Capacity of the water sample, ml.
