Presidents Report May 2012 Members-I am very thankful to you for electing me President of the Southern California Chapter of the American Concrete Institute. Our chapter is the first local chapter sanctioned by ACI and the list of individuals who started this chapter and who have participated on the Board of Directors for this chapter for the last 54 years is impressive and I hope to successfully continue their legacy. I would also like to thank Rob Graine for his leadership and guidance as our chapter president in 2011 and look forward to working with him this year as Past President. I am also looking forward to working with or new Vice President Ed Krip Kripavicius and our 3 new board members, Kevin Smith, Janeen Oliver and David Resweber. Together all of us on the Board of Directors will be working hard to make 2012 an educational and positive year for our chapter. Our Chapter mission is to gather, collate and disseminate for the improvement of the design, construction, manufacture, use and maintenance of concrete products and structures and I invite all of our membership to participate in this endeavor. Congratulations to Jim Little for being selected as the 2012 Sam Hobbs Service Award recipient at our January meeting. If you werent there it was a great meeting and Jims 20+ years of dedicated service to the concrete industry and our chapter exemplifies what the Sam Hobbs Award means. Sam Hobbs was instrumental in the founding of the ACI chapter system and the Southern California Chapter, he served as the Chapter Secretary for many years. We wouldnt be a chapter if not for the work of people like Sam Hobbs and Jim Little. Thanks again Jim and it was great to see how proud your family was of you. The Howard Lux Memorial Scholarship Fund Golf Tournament at Sierra Lakes golf course was a success. Congratulations to the winners and thank you to all those who participated. The Southern California Chapter uses the proceeds to fund our scholarship program and for community outreach to such programs as the ACE Mentor Program. Recently I had the pleasure to attend the ACE Mentor Student Presentation and Scholarship Awards Program. This was on Sat May 12th at the Robert F Kennedy Community School's Coconut Grove Theater. 11 High School teams presented projects ranging from parking structures to museums. It was great to see HS students get excited about Architecture, Construction, Engineering and our annual donations actually being put to use. The program ran from 9:30 to 1:00 with all the school teams presenting their projects. We have rescheduled the Hanson Irwindale Clam Shell Dredge tour to June 26th. There is a limited amount of space available and no walk ins will be allowed so sign up early. This will be an exciting tour and I look forward to attending. In addition to this I know Ed Krip has other educational and entertaining meetings lined up for us and I look forward to an exciting 2012.

Most sincerely yours, Charles Kerzic ACI Southern California President 2012

Just like every year, we had a great turnout. The money raised by our golfers, sponsors and raffles is used to provide scholarships to eager students looking to pursue a career in the construction industry. Money is distributed through our local chapter and the ACE Mentor Program. We would like to thank all of our participants, sponsors and volunteers for making this another successful event. Beautiful weather allowed us to enjoy the fantastic scenery this wonderful course has to offer. If you missed out on the chance to join us this year, we look forward to seeing you next spring. Here are a few pictures showing some of our participants, supporters and volunteers who enjoyed the day with us:

We are pleased to announce that the International Conference on Concrete Sustainability (ICCS13) will be held in Tokya, Japan, May 27 29, 2013. This conference is organized by the Japan Concrete Institute (JCI) and co-organized by fib, ACI, and RILEM. There is no doubt that sustainability is one of the most important issues of this century. The concrete industry will have to play an important role for sustainable society as concrete, the second-most used material on the Earth after water, is essential to the creation of the infrastructure and buildings that form the basis of human socioeconomic activity. We would like to invite you to attend ICCS13 for taking a great opportunity to discuss our sustainable future by exchanging state-of-the-art information and knowledge on concrete sustainability. The conference topics are as follows: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. Environmental impact reduction technologies Sustainability aspects in durability Environmental design, evaluation, and systems Social and economic aspects Case studies of sustainable concrete materials and structures Other related topics

Abstracts for the conference will be accepted beginning January 1, 2012. Please visit the official ICCS13 website for more information. www.jci-iccs13.jp/ American Concrete Institute Phone: 248-848-3800 E-mail: bkstore@concrete.org Online: www.concrete.org

Hanson Irwindale Clam Shell Dredge Tour
Hosted By: Hanson Aggregates

Hanson Aggregates welcomes you to tour this unique facility utilizing a Suction Dredge and a Clam Shell Dredge. The Suction Dredge does the primary work removing silts from the surface of the reserves allowing the Clam Shell Dredge to be a work horse and retrieve quality materials with every scoop. The suction dredge is directed by GPS which maps its path in preparation for the Clam Shell. The Clam Shells two synchronized buckets drop one after the other continually retrieving up to 35 tons (18 cu.yd.) of material per bucket. Raw feed is then conveyed and stockpiled allowing it to leach excess water. It is later processed through the series of belts and conveyers delivering the raw materials to various crushers and sieves. The result is an extensive variety of aggregate blends and building materials that have played a vital role in the development of our community. The Hanson Aggregate Irwindale plant has been in operation for 100 years and has the capacity to process over 3.25 million tons of material per year. This may be your only chance to witness this fascinating piece of mining equipment that extracts the raw feed from the obis at depths reaching 235 feet. This is currently the largest Clam Shell Dredge in continuous operation in the United States.
Hanson Aggregates is committed to safety. Our policy requires that Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) be worn during the tour.
