Economic News Supervises the Business Community Dubai Chamber also supervises the interests and affairs of the business community, reviews their suggestions and facilitates their participation in regional and international economic activities. It also works on attracting investments to Dubai through introducing the investment opportunities available in the Emirate through outbound trade missions and opens new channels of communication with other foreign trading centres and commercial entities visiting Dubai with their trade delegations. Building strong international links is a major focus of Dubai Chamber in 2013. The organisation has a close relationship with the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) as its Director General, H.E. Hamad Buamim, is Deputy Chairman of the World Chambers Federation (WCF), the ICCs arm responsible for chambers of commerce affairs for a three-year mandate which started in January. Previously, he served as one of the five Vice Chairs of WCF responsible for the Middle East region and concluded his three-year term at the end of last year. Exploring new markets is a strategic priority for the organisation as it seeks to promote its members abroad and has already opened its first overseas representative office in Baku, Azerbaijan and is ready to expand its global presence through several representative offices in promising markets of the world. Dubai Chamber Workshop Raises Awareness of Online Trading

Dubai In order to provide its members with an easy access to online trading, the Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Industry recently organized a first-of-its-kind training workshop in the region to raise awareness about the benefits of doing business through an e-commerce platform. Dubai Chamber has partnered with Alibaba.com, a leading global e-commerce platform for small and big businesses, to provide its members with an exclusive opportunity to take their business to the next level and to help create new market opportunities. Attendees came from different economic sectors, to participate in the training workshop geared towards acquainting them on how to upload and create their own catalogue on dubaichamber.com/alibaba and strategically use the platform to trade in the global market more efficiently while gaining competitive advantage.

Dubai Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Industry puts sustainability at the heart of all its operations. As the main representative of Dubais private sector, its not only encourages businesses to become more environmentally-friendly, but it also works to strengthen investment in renewable energy, green technologies and waste and water management in the Emirate.

Forming strategic partnerships with industry leaders is one way Dubai Chamber helps to encourage investment in Dubais eco-industries. This is part of Dubai Chambers green strategy and has seen high level discussions focus on sustainability and green technologies at the last Dubai-Hamburg Business Forum held in Dubai. Dubai Chamber helps encourage the business community to be less wasteful and more environmentally conscious through its Centre for Responsible Business. This centre regularly organizes events, training and other support to encourage sustainability among the business community. Environmental Initiatives At the same time, Dubai Chamber is leading by example through its own environmental initiatives to reduce energy consumption and reduce wastage. The organisation has managed to dispel the myth that greening existing buildings in this part of the world is difficult or expensive after it achieved LEED Existing Building in 2009 through numerous number of low cost initiatives. As such, it was the first building in the Arab world and only the fourth outside North America to receive this globally recognised environmental rating. 8 ASWAQ Magazine | February 2013

Through simple waste cutting schemes,like switching off lights and air conditioning after business hours and capturing condensate water, as well as increased staff awareness, Dubai Chamber managed to reduce its water and energy consumption between 1998 and 2008 by 77% and 47% respectively, leading to a financial saving of around AED 7.1 million (USD 1.93 million). Major Retrofit Inspired by its previous success, Dubai Chamber undertook a major retrofit project to bring its head office up-to-date with the latest standards in security, technology, health and safety. From project pitch to delivery, the strictest green building standards have been followed, covering everything from the toxicity of paint to the use of light and movement sensors. This has gone on to create one of the healthiest and least wasteful work environments in the region, which is an example to others of what they can achieve with the will and a little imagination. Membership and Exports Increase for Dubai Chamber

Dubai The value of exports and reexports by members of the Dubai Chamber of commerce and Industry reached AED 136.2 billion during the first six months of 2012 - an increase of 13.3%, compared to the same period in 2011. Dubai Chambers half year data shows that its members exports and re-exports between January and June 2012 were worth AED 16 billion more than the same period in 2011, when they were valued at AED 120.3 billion. Also, breaking a record in May 2012 as Dubai Chamber members exports and re-exports achieved the highest monthly tally of AED 28 billion since the founding of Dubai Chamber in 1965. This particular month registered a 26.3% growth compared to May of 2011 which had a total of AED 22.1 billion while the monthly figure of AED 19.7 billion in February was the lowest during the six month period. During the first half, Dubai Chamber issued a total of 373,000 certificates of origin (COs). This is an increase of 8.4%, compared to the 344,067 certificates of origin issued during the first six months of 2011. May was the month with the highest number of certificates issued

70,000, while February was the month with the least 57,000. Between January and June, a total of 7,000 new members joined Dubai Chamber. This is a 30% increase on the same period in 2011 when 5,233 new members joined. This increases the total number of Dubai Chamber members to over 135,000 by the end of June 2012. 9

Seven UAE Organisations Receive CSR Label

Dubai Seven major organizations were presented the Dubai Chamber CSR Label during a ceremony held at the Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Industry premises. The awardees were honoured for their e ff orts to become leading businesses in corporate social responsibility and sustainability. The seven organizations included Palm Utilities, Unibeton, Global Village, UAE Exchange as well as Nail Spa and QBG, both receiving this honour for the second year running, while NBAD became the first Abu Dhabibased organisation to receive the Dubai Chamber CSR Label in the country. Presenting the CSR Label, H.E. Hamad Buamim, Director General, Dubai Chamber, congratulated the awardees stating that their efforts were a source of inspiration for the entire business community.All the recipients here today are CSR pioneers in the region and are helping to promote best business practices by leading by example, he said.

20 Overseas Offices for Dubai Chamber

Dubai The Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Industry plans to open representative offices in various upcoming markets in different parts of the world. The Chamber has identified 20 such markets, sources said. Dubai Chamber recently opened its first ever overseas office in the Azerbaijani capital of Baku which is seen as a giant leap forward in establishing the global presence of UAE companies in Central Asia and the Caucasus region. The new office will open up a gate of opportunities for Dubai businesses in the emerging Caucasus markets and explore joint partnerships in various lucrative economic sectors of the country and its surrounding region. It will also lead to a two-way trade as Azerbijan companies will get all the information they would need for entering the Dubai market and the rest of the GCC region through the Emirate. Hamad Buamim, Director General, Dubai Chamber, said the move is part of Dubai Chambers new strategy to introduce its members to opportunities in new emerging markets and to stir the economic growth of the Emirate by promoting Dubai globally while enhancing its business competitiveness in the overseas market. The new office will provide on easy access to Dubais business community in expanding their business interests in the markets of Central Asia as there is good potential for new business opportunities and joint partnerships in Azerbaijan, Georgia, Kazakhstan and other countries in the region. It will also help Dubai businesses to know about the prevailing legal regulations and requirements for setting up business in the country. The new representative office, which was inaugurated during the Dubai Chamber Trade Mission to Azerbaijan, was launched on the sidelines of the UAE-Azerbaijan Economic Forum.

UAEs Tasweek to Hand Over Malaysia Projects

Abu Dhabi Abu Dhabi-based property company Tasweek Real Estate Development and Marketing will hand over the first of three towers in its USD81 million development in Malaysia this month. The Haven Lakeside Residences includes three 26-storey towers with a total of 497 luxury units, as well as a swimming pool, club house and running track. About 85% of the units have been sold, Tasweek said. Most of the buyers are from Singapore, China and Malaysia and the majority intend to retire there, the company said. Prices ranged from MYR250,000 (USD81,859) to MYR1.41 million (USD461,690) and were offered as part of a leasehold agreement spanning for 99 years. The first of the towers, named Acacia, will be

handed over to management early February, with the other two towers Banyan and Cycas due to be completed in August. The residences overlook a 14-storey-high, 280m-year old pre-Jurassic lime rock that juts out of the adjacent lake.
