Lydia Sheldon Anne Frank Curriculum Unit Overview Core text: The Diary of Anne Frank, Frances Goodrich

and Albert Hackett 5 weeks Enduring Understandings Articulating themes of adolescent development. Anne believes that the questions she and Peter ask as adolescents are unique to them. Is that true? Are the questions she asks unique because of her unique position located in a specific time and place? How are her questions/struggles similar to students own experiences? How are they dissimilar? How do the literary elements of setting and dramatic irony influence the plot of the play? What is the relevance of Anne Franks account to students today? How can students make address issues that are important in their own lives? Objectives Students will work in literature circles, participating in a variety of roles. Students will research a topic of their choice that connects to Anne Frank. Students will write a research paper, incorporating sources. Students will incorporate new background knowledge of particular historical moment into study of a literary text. Students will begin to understand a texts themes both as universally true and located within a particular context. Students will explore articulating themselves through their own journals. Stuents will annotate images and text through note-taking. Students will define and locate dramatic irony and setting. Students will engage with a dramatic text through Readers Theatre. Students will read pictures as narrative, through photographs, paintings, and illustrations. Students will analyze film and news articles about teenagers who effect change in todays world.
