RESEARCH ABSTRACTS

The research studies have been classified into different segments such as Program Segmentation, need assessment for radio and TV, educational television, television news channels, television and social behavior, Television Advertising, and researches in the area of radio and information technology. Segment wise research studies have been given in separate captions.

PROGRAM SEGMENTATION:
Study of program segmentation of Educational Television Channels. Unpublished Masters- level dissertation, AVRC, DAVV, Indore (2004). Investigator: Narain Patidar Supervisor: Dr. Akhilesh K Singh. The objectives of the research were to study the programming pattern of Educational Channels with respect to time slots, content, discipline, duration and repeat telecast and also to prepare a guideline for the broadcasters of Educational Channels. The research design was qualitative in nature and was a case study. The sample of this research was three educational channels namely Discovery, National Geographic and Animal Planet. The tools used to collect data were: - 1. Program Schedule Guide acquired from the channels official website. 2. Program Analytical Guide prepared according to different variables. The data was analyzed using content analysis, frequencies and percentage. The findings stated that the time slot preferred most by Animal Planet was 1 am to 6 am, by Discovery was 6 am to 12 pm and by National Geographic was 12 pm to 4 pm. Most preferred time duration by National Geographic and Animal Planet was 30 mins. followed by 60 mins. and then by 120 mins. Discovery preferred 60 mins. and then 30 mins. programs. Discovery and National Geographic telecasted maximum programs on Technology and Wild life but apart from them variety of programs according to time slot and viewers interest are shown. Programs could be divided into three disciplines Physical Science, Natural Science and Social Science. Animal Plant concentrated on programs of Natural Sciences. Discovery and National Geographic showed most programs concerning Social Sciences followed by Physical Sciences and then Natural Sciences. The number of repeated programs is quite similar for all the three channels. Approximately about 25% of the programs are repeated with maximum repetitions on the same day or on the very next.

Study of Program Segmentation of Entertainment Television Channels. Unpublished Masters-level dissertation AVRC, DAVV, Indore (2004). Investigator: Mustafa Chawaniwala Supervisor: Dr. Prabhakar Singh With the flood of channel in the present scenario, to reap maximum benefits to the emerging channels and broadcasters and to provide a guideline for the broadcasters to offer maximum to their viewers. In this research the programming pattern of entertainment channels with respect to programs category, time slot, target audience, duration, old stock programs, repeat telecast pattern were studied. For this three entertainment channels were picked up (Sony, Zee & Star) and the approach adopted for the study was case study and qualitative study was done for the same. For this month of February (2004) was selected and time slot between 7 AM to 12 PM was selected. The data collected on the bases of program schedule guide (PSG) acquired. Further for verification of PSG an observation schedule was prepared to observe program randomly then a program analytical guide according to different variables was prepared the collected data were analyzed using content analysis frequencies and percentage. The research findings revealed that 30% - 40% programs on the cannels were drama based, 25% - 15 % were music based, 15 % - 10% were comedy based. Under 12 PM to 5 PM 30% of the programs were telecasted, 7 AM to 12 PM 35% of programs were telecasted, 5 PM to 8 PM 20%, 8 PM to 11.30 15% were telecasted. 40% of the program target audiences were housewife, 25% General people, 15% youth, 10% children, 10% senior citizen. 75% of the programs were of 30 min duration, 15% 60 min. duration, 10% were either 90 min to 120 min program. 28% of the programs were repeated during the month. 45% of the old stock programs were drama based, and 25% of old stock program were comedy based. NEED ASSESSMENT FOR RADIO AND TV: Singh A.K. and Singh P.: Jhabua Development Project: Need Assessment. Research Project completed by AVRC, DAVV, Indore for DECU, ISRO, Ahmedabad (1996). The main objective of this research was to study the educational needs of Jhabua district and identify the topics for the development of television software. This study was conducted in randomly selected villages of Jhabua district of Madhya Pradesh. The textbooks at various levels of education were also analyzed. At the end more than hundred topics were identified and relevant information for producers was provided.

A study of Media Habits and Media Awareness of the Students of D.A.V.V. Unpublished Masters-level dissertation, AVRC, DAVV, Indore (2004). Investigator: Anibha Jain Supervisor: Dr. Akhilesh K. Singh The major objective of the study was to find out the Media awareness & preference and media habits of University students. It was a Survey for Research. Sample of 200 students (Graduate and Undergraduate) from 32 different departments of D.A.V.V. Indore was selected and Stratified Random Sampling Technique was used for selection of sample. A Questionnaire was developed by investigator was used for data collection. The data were analyzed by using the statistical techniques frequency and percentage. It was found that the highest preference of University students was TV (87%), followed by Internet (86%), then News Paper/Magazine/Books (85%), Cinema (70%), Mobiles (53%), VCD Players (44%), and then DVD Players (28%). The highest access was found for TV and lowest for DVD Players. A Study of the Need Assessment of Students, Teachers & Staff of Devi Ahilya Vishwavidhyalaya, Kandwa Road Campus, for the Establishment of Educational FM Radio Station. Unpublished Masters-Level dissertation, AVRC, DAVV, Indore (2004). Investigator: Saurabh Sabarwal Supervisor: Dr. Akhilesh K Singh. The objective of the research was to study demographic profile, media awareness, media habit, program preference, content preference, music preference, preferred mode of feedback, preference of format & time for social issue program for, proposed campus FM Radio amongst students, teaching & non teaching staff. The study was survey in nature. The sample of the study consisted of 250 respondent. A respondent sheet was developed to survey the need of students, teaching & non teaching staff of the university. A preference scale (preference for campus radio) about program preference, format preference, interest preference, issues & timing was used. Statistical tools such as frequency, percentage, & chi-square were used for data analysis. It was found that for the establishment of campus radio majority of respondents preferred content of the radio program syllabus based, informative, and entertaining. Radio programs related to social issues, light music, entrepreneurship, were also in demand. Lectures of eminent academicians were also preferred. The suitable time preferred for listening to the campus radio was 7-9 in the morning and 7-11 in the evening.

EDUCATIONAL TELEVISION: Passi B.K., Singh P. & Singh A.K.: National Talkback Experiment 1991, A project sponsored by UGC New Delhi, conducted by AVRC, DAVV, Indore (1991). The main objective of this study was to test the feasibility of infrastructure facilities involved in two-way audio and one-way video conferencing and effectiveness of Talk back in terms of achievement and reaction of under graduate students. The experiment continued for seven days. Firstly, recorded programs were telecast after a live discussion with experts were followed. Viewers could ask questions through telephone to the experts. Pre test Posttest control group design was used. Everyday both the groups were pre tested and post tested. Data were analysed with the help of t test and chi square. The talk back was found to be effective in terms of achievement and reaction towards it. Singh P. & Singh A.K.: Teleconferencing on New Communication Technologies1994. A project sponsored by UGC New Delhi, conducted by AVRC, DAVV, Indore (1994). Sharma N, Rathod R.S., & Krishna P.R.: Use of Sophisticated Electronic Equipment for the Production of ETV Programmes on Multimedia. Unpublished Masters-level dissertation, School of Electronics, DAVV, Indore (1994). The major objective of this research was to produce a UGC ETV series on multimedia and study its effectiveness towards achievement and reaction of undergraduate students. Formative research process was applied during the production of program. The study was experimental in nature. Single group posttest design was used. Data were analyzed with the help of mean, SD, CV, Percentage and chi square statistical technique. The programs were found to be effective in terms of achievement and reaction towards various aspects of ETV program. Singh, B.B.: Developing Kindness in School Children by Discussion of Value Dilemmas Presented through Video Mode. Unpublished Ph.D.-level dissertation, School of Education, DAVV, Indore (1995). The major objective of the research was to develop kindness by discussion of values by presenting the dilemma through video mode amongst school students. The study was experimental in nature. Pre test post test control group design was used. The experiment continued for 40 working days. ANCOVA, Chi square were used to analyze the data. It was found that presentation of dilemma was effective in terms of understanding of dilemma. Kangia R., Rithaliya, R: Use of Sophisticated Electronic Equipment for Development of an UGC Video Program on Water Quality Management in Aqua Culture. Unpublished Masters- level dissertation, School of Electronics, DAVV, Indore (1995). The major objective of this research was to produce a UGC ETV program on Aquaculture and study its effectiveness towards achievement and reaction of undergraduate students. Formative research process was applied during the production of program. The study was experimental in nature. Single group posttest design was used. Data were analyzed with the help of mean, SD, CV, Percentage and chi square statistical technique. The program was found to be effective in terms of achievement and reaction towards various aspects of ETV program. Singh, P. & Singh A.K.: Jhabua Development Project Pre testing: A project sponsored by DECU, ISRO, Ahmedabad conducted by AVRC, DAVV, Indore (1997). The main objective of this research was to study the effectiveness of the programs produced for JDCP in terms of their relevance and acceptability. Villages in Jhabua were selected randomly for pre testing of programs. The programs were shown to the villagers and their reactions were taken. It was found that most of the programs were as per the need of people of Jhabua. Suggestions for improvement were also provided.

Jain C: Production and Evaluation of UGC ETV Program on Bambusa. Unpublished Masters-level dissertation, School of Future Studies and Planning, DAVV, Indore (1997). The major objective of this research was to produce a UGC ETV program on Bambusa and study its effectiveness towards achievement and reaction of undergraduate students. The major objective of this research was to produce a UGC ETV program on Cellular Communication and study its effectiveness towards achievement and reaction of undergraduate students. Formative research process was applied during the production of program. The study was experimental in nature. Single group posttest design was used. Data were analyzed with the help of mean, SD, CV, Percentage and chi square statistical technique. The program was found to be effective in terms of achievement and reaction towards various aspects of ETV program. Singh, A.K.: A Study of Effectiveness of CWCR Programs of Economics with and without Discussion. Unpublished Ph.D. level dissertation, School of Education, DAVV, Indore (1998). The major objective of this research was study the Effectiveness CWCR Programs of Economics with and without Discussion in terms of achievement and reaction of undergraduate students. The study was experimental in nature. Pre test Post Test Control Group Design was used. Twenty educational television program produced by various media center were collected and shown to the students. The data were analyzed with the help of ANOVA, and Chi square. The students reacted favorably towards the ETV Programs. It was found that Discussion after Viewing the program is better that no discussion after viewing the program.

An Analytical Study on Documentaries on Historical Monuments, Produced by AVRC, Indore, during the years 19932003. Unpublished Masters-level dissertation, AVRC, DAVV, Indore (2004). Investigator: Archana Shrivastava Supervisor: Dr. Akhilesh K. Singh The objectives of the research was to study the effectiveness of documentaries on historical monuments in terms of criterions like language, music, editing, camera work, graphics, etc. The sample of this study consisted of 325 Electronic Media students of A.V.R.C., Indore. This study was experimental in nature. Single group posttest design was applied. A program evaluation scale was prepared to collect data. This scale consisted of 38 statements regarding language pattern, technical aspects and aesthetics used in documentaries on historical monuments. The obtained data were analyzed by using statistical techniques like frequency, percentage and chi-sq. The findings stated that students reacted favorably towards all elements such as language, music, editing, graphics, camera work, lighting, anchoring, used in documentaries on historical monuments for all 14 programs. A Study of Educational Channels amongst the Students of University. Unpublished Masters-level dissertation, A.V.R.C., DAVV, Indore (2004). Investigator: Harsha Parwani Supervisor: Archana Singh. The objectives of the research was to study the media habits, awareness, preferences of duration, time slot, format and subjects of educational channels. The study was survey in nature. A sample of 160 students was selected randomly. Data was collected by a questionnaire. The data was analysed by SPSS. It was found that most students preffered watching Discovery Channel followed by National Geographic, UGC programs (gyandarshan) and Animal Planet, in that order. It was also found that most students preferred watching programs related to new technology on educational channel. Effectiveness of Video Spots in the Terms of Sensitizing the Teenagers. Unpublished Masters- level dissertation, AVRC, DAVV, Indore (2004). Investigator: Umesh Mishra Supervisor: Dr. Prabhakar Singh. The objectives of this research were to produce a video spot on obesity and polypacks and compare the mean sensitivity scores of the experimental group with that of the control group towards obesity and polypacks taking pretest as covariate and measuring its effectiveness in terms of sensitizing the teenagers. A sample group of 50 students of seventh and eighth standard of University Innovative School was selected. They were divided into control group and experimental group where they were pre-tested and posttested. The tool used in this research was AVRC sensitivity scale. This research used ANCOVA analysis. The major findings of this research were that television has profound impact on the kids and they are aware of topics related to their body and appearance. But on the topics concerning society, science and environment the teenagers need to be propagated.

TELEVISON NEWS: Opinion of TV Viewers of Indore about DD News Channel. Unpublished Masterlevel dissertation, AVRC, DAVV, Indore (2004). Investigator: Prakhya Shrivastava Supervisor: Dr. Prabhakar Singh The objectives of this research was to study the opinion of TV viewers of Indore about DD News channel in terms of language, content, presentation, technical aspects and also to study the effectiveness and popularity of DD News channel. The research was survey in nature. A sample of 240 viewers of Indore was selected randomly. For data collection a questionnaire was developed on the basis of electronic news watching habits, language, content, presentation, technical part other programs rather news, rating of DD News channel. Data were analyzed by using software SPSS (Statistical package for social sciences). Statistical techniques used were frequency and percentage, chi-square test, mean standard deviation and coefficient of variance. The findings showed that DD News rated 4th in popularity. Majority viewers said that language of DD News is good, understandable and interesting. Over all presentation including technical part and content of program were found good in opinion of viewers. Comprehensive Study of Language Spoken in Hindi News Channels. Unpublished Masters-level dissertation, AVRC, DAVV, Indore (2004). Investigator: Antas Billore Supervisor: Dr. Akhilesh K Singh The objectives of the research was to study the language, grammar, pronunciation, contribution of news anchor and correspondents, use of words and common language, sequencing of news items and quality of news etc in Hindi news channel. The research was survey in nature. A sample of 200 people of different age group, gender and profession of Indore were taken. A Questionnaire was prepared for collection of data. Data collected from the source were analyzed through Frequencies and Percentage Level. Finding showed that all viewers had TV and maximum had cable connection and they liked watching news after every three hours. Male and female anchors were liked equally. News in Hindi was more popular and people liked tele-text and graphically animated news. Star News was liked by most of the viewers followed by Zee News, which was liked for being contextual and then Doordarshan, which had less pronunciation errors.

Perception of Media Person about Parliament News of DD-National., Unpublished Mastes-level dissertation, AVRC, DAVV, Indore (2004). Investigator: Kuldeep Singh Bais Supervisor: Dr. Prabhakar Singh The objectives of this research was to study the media habits, general awareness and opinion of media persons about the presentation, language and quality and to study the effect of gender, profession & their interaction on semantic of camera work, presentation and scripting of parliament any news of DD. National. The sample consisted of over 120 media persons of Indore city chosen randomly. The study was survey in nature. Questionnaire and semantic differential ware developed as tools of study. The data ware analyzed with help of SPSS and the statistical techniques used were Frequency, percentage, chi-square test and 2X2 unequal call size factorial design Anova. The findings stated that maximum media persons liked and watched news on DD. National during late night hour and did so more during general budget. The found the timing, press releases and freedom of Press agreeable but thought that sometimes the news is not fairly communicated. People preferred Hindi language but wanted change in the background music. They responded positively to anchoring, voice over, scripting and camera work. But no significant effect of gander, profession a their interaction was feet on semantic meaning of camera work, presentation & scripting.

TELEVISION AND SOCIAL BEHAVIOUR: A Study of the Effect of Television on Social Behavior of Teenagers. Unpublished Masters-level dissertation, AVRC, DAVV, Indore (2004). Investigator: Sheetal Paliwal Supervisor: Dr. Prabhakar Singh. The objective of research was to study the perception of teenagers, parents of teenagers with respect to impact of television on their social behavior and also to compare the mean perception score of male and female teenagers and parents of teenagers with respect to impact of television on their childrens social behavior. The sample size of research was contain 300 individuals, which included 100 teenagers and their 100 father and 100 mother. The research was survey in nature. The data was collected by a questionnaire. The findings stated that there was significant impact of television on the social behavior of teenagers with respect to their perception and the perception of their parents and there was no significant difference between the mean perception score of male and female teenagers and their parents with respect to impact of television of their childrens social behavior. Perceived Impact of Cartoon Films on Children. Unpublished Masters-level dissertation, AVRC, DAVV, Indore( 2004). Investigator: Neelam Verma Supervisor: Dr. Prabhakar Singh The objective of this research was to study the impact of cartoon films on thinking, feeling and behavior of children, to study the perception of the parents about the same on their children. The study was survey in nature. The sample size contained 120 individuals- 60 children 30 male 60 females parents selected randomly from the population of Indore. The data was collected by a questionnaire. The findings stated that the children had favorable perception towards cartoon films (Thinking, feeling) while non-favorable towards cartoon films (Behavior). The perception of males and females children did not differ but perception of male children was significantly higher than that of female children towards behavior. Parents had favorable perception towards cartoon films (Thinking, feeling) and non favorable towards behavior.

TELEVISION ADVERTISING: A Study of the Fffect of Celebrity in TV Commercials on Recall and Purchase Intention. Unpublished Masters-level dissertation, AVRC, DAVV, Indore (2004). Investigator: Jaideep Ojha Supervisor: Chandan Gupta The major objective of this research was to study the effect of celebrity in TV commercials and effect of age, gender and their interaction on recall & purchase intention of the audience. This study was survey in nature. The sample consisted of 180 individuals selected randomly. The data required was collected using Random Sampling Technique, under which two scales viz. advertisement recall & purchase intention. According to the age groups & gender the data was analyzed by applying 2 way factorial ANOVA. The statistical technique applied to analyze the data were, mean standard deviation & coefficient of variation. The findings showed no significant effect of gender & interaction on recall & of age & interaction on purchase intention in TV commercials having celebrity. But respondents of age group 15-30 yrs had higher recall as compared to the other two groups. Also, males possessed higher purchase intention than females. Impact of Television Advertisement on Buying Behavior of Housewives. Unpublished Masters-level dissertation, AVRC, DAVV, Indore (2004). Investigator: Pooja Shukla Supervisor: Dr. Prabhakar Singh The objective of this research was to study effects of income, age, qualification, and their various interactions on buying behavior of housewives. The sample consisted of 100 housewives belonging to different age groups, economic and educational background. This study was survey in nature. Data collection was done by a questionnaire. Technique of data analysis was chi-square and univariate analysis of variance. The findings stated that maximum number of housewives agreed that sometimes TV ads help in choosing right products. Maximum number of housewives agreed that they never got influenced by TV ads to spend more than the budget. Maximum number of housewives agreed that usually they changed their adopted advertised brand if they are not satisfied. Maximum number of housewives agreed that they never bought only that brand which was shown in TV ads.

A Study of the Popularity of Soft Drink Commercials amongst the University Students of Indore. Unpublished Masters-level dissertation, AVRC, DAVV, Indore (2004). Investigator: Swati Vinze Supervisor: Dr. Akhilesh K. Singh The objective of the research was to study the popularity, understanding, recommendations, preferred media and preference of soft drink commercials amongst university students of Indore and also to study their reaction to the Idea, character a model used, language, production aspects, music and computer generated information of these commercials and their drinking habits. The sample chosen by simple random selection was of 197 students of DAVV Indore. The study design was survey in nature. Soft drink commercials popularity Questionnaire was used to collect the data and a scale Soft drink commercial popularity scale developed by the investigator. For analyzing the data frequency, percent age and chi-square test was applied. The findings stated that the popular soft drink commercial amongst the university students of Indore was coca cola because of its unique idea and celebrity, next in the line is Pepsi. They showed favorable reaction towards the understanding of any soft drink commercial. They liked simple, catchy commercials with nice punch lines, meaningful and simple language, TV media preferred because of casuals, moving pictures, attractive colors and animations. A Study of the Factors Involved in Child Product Advertisements". Unpublished Masters-level dissertation, AVRC, DAVV, Indore (2004). Investigator: Anupama Upadhyaya Supervisor: Dr. Akhilesh K. Singh. This research was conducted to find the factors involved in child product advertisements and to catch the most influencing factor among them. The research was survey in nature. Data is collected from 100 children of SICA school of Indore. A questionnaire was used to collect data. The analysis of data is done by statistical method "Factor analysis" with SPPS software. The findings stated that the "liveliness" of an advertisement is most influencing factor followed by logical persuasion, harmony, stimuli and comic, in that order. Study of Factors Contributing in Most Popular TV Advertisements among Youths of Indore. Unpublished Masters-level dissertation, AVRC, DAVV, Indore (2004). Investigator: Reena Nagdev Supervisor: Chandan Gupta The objective of this research was to study the factors responsible for the popular TV advertisements among the youth of Indore, to prioritize the factors according to their contribution in the popularity of an advertisement and to prepare guideline for the advertiser to include factors required for making a popular advertisement. A sample of 160 youth age 18-35 of Indore was selected by simple random sampling method. The study was survey in nature. As a tool for data collection- questionnaire was developed. The collected data were analyzed by applying factor analysis statistical technique and using SPSS. The findings stated that most of the youth of Indore wanted to be given

logical and factual ads and ads not only for entertainment. Next they want good music, charming visuals and humor, in that order. They also wanted some unusual characteristic but the least important factor was the use of emotions of any kind. A Survey Study of Effect of PSA (Public Service Announcement) Broadcast on Doordarshan on the Rural Public of Indore District. Unpublished Masters-level dissertation, AVRC, DAVV , Indore (2004). Singh The objective of this research was to study the effect of PSA broadcast on Doordarshan on the rural public of Indore district and their media awareness. The research was survey in nature. 130 persons from different villages of Indore district were taken as sample. Questionnaire was used for data collection. Mathematical, Statistical techniques were used for data analysis. The findings stated that maximum villagers did not have cable connection and they preferred watching television at night in which they liked seeing serials the most and political programmes the least. Most of them liked to see PSA and applied them. They were found to have less knowledge of computers as compared to Newspaper, Radio etc. RESEARCHES IN THE AREA OF RADIO: Effect of Different F.M. Singh The objective of this research was to study the media behaviour, listening habits, popularity of F.M. Radio Channels, language used, effects of programme on listeners. A sample of 226 people was chosen randomly. The research was survey in nature. Data was collected through questionnaire and was analyzed with the help of SPSS software. Finding of the survey reveals that maximum people preferred listening to Vividh Bharati and Radio Mirchi F.M. Radio channels. Youth preferred listening to Radio Mirchi whereas older generation liked Vividh Bharati because of its language sophistication. Earlier popularity of Radio Mirchi was high but the channel could not maintain its position, whereas popularity of Vividh Bharati always remained same. Another aspect of the research shows that originality of the language was in danger due to mixture of Hindi and English used very prominently by Radio Mirchi. It was also affecting the audience significantly.

Singh The objective of the research was to develop a website for AVRC, DAVV, Indore, and then to study the effectiveness of the web site in terms of content, layout, design, multimedia element, accessibility and reaction towards the site. The research was experimental in nature. Sample was selected in two phases. In the first phase i.e., development of website, a sample of students and experts in the field were taken, size was 15. In the next phase 65 students were selected randomly. Reaction scale towards the website of AVRC, DAVV, Indore was developed. The data was analyzed using mean, SD, CV, frequency, percentage and chi-square. SPSS was used to analyse the data. It was found that all respondents reacted favorably towards the content, layout, designing, multimedia elements, accessibility of the website and that they matched favorably towards the developed website. Investigator: Anant Mishra Supervisor: Dr. Prabhakar Singh The objective of research was to study and compare the perception of users and nonusers for the Internet & impact of age, sex, qualification and their interaction on it.The study was survey in nature. A sample of 240 individuals was randomly selected. For measurement of the psychological meaning of the perception & respondents semantic differential for perception instrument was used with respondent enquiry forms. The tstatically technique with SPSS were use to study and analyze the data. The findings stated that the perception of above PG males and females was significantly higher than the PG males, females and non-users in terms of utility of Internet in entertainment, business and education. It was also found that there were more female non-users than male non-users.
