All I Really Need To Know I
Learned In Kindergarten.
Welcome to a new year for Beta Zeta
chapter! I look forward to the help and
support of each of you as I begin my
term as your President. The program
committee has already been hard at
work and we have some fun and
informative meetings planned for the
coming months. We are going to learn
lots of new things!
Which reminds me, as much as I agree
with Robert Fulghum when he said in
his famous piece that all you really need
to know you learn in kindergarten, we
keep learning new things every day of
our lives. I may be a bit prejudiced
about kindergarten, having spent 36
years there, but we learn and have fun
at every chapter meeting, for example.
Having retired at the end of last school
year, I have learned a few new things
myself lately too, such as:
You really can have too many
books, especially when you have
to pack them all up and bring
them home!
Back to School Sales are just as
tempting as they always were.
Don't you still go weak at the
knees when you see crayons on
sale for 25 cents a box or pens at
99 cents a pack? Admit it, you
do!
Your bladder can be trained to
work at times other than recess
and lunch time.
Speaking of lunch, it really
doesn't have to be gulped in 10
minutes!
You don't have to buy new
underwear and socks just
because it is back to school time.
For the first time since I started
kindergarten (not telling you how
long ago), I am waiting until
Halloween or maybe even
Thanksgiving to buy undies!
(Unless I find too many holy
ones!)
Here's hoping that we all learn
something new every day and at every
chapter meeting! And as Mr. Fulghum
says at the end of his piece: And it is
still true, no matter how old you are--
when you go out into the world, it is best
to hold hands and stick together.

STRS eUpdate
From August 17
Board News
STRS Ohio Presents Pension
Reform Proposal to House
Subcommittee

At the August meeting of the State
Teachers Retirement Board, executive
director Michael Nehf provided an
update on the status of pension
legislation that is pending before the
Ohio House of Representatives. Nehf
told the board that the House Health
and Aging Subcommittee on Retirement
and Pensions held several hearings on
pension bills during the summer. On
Aug. 8 Nehf presented STRS Ohios
pension reform proposal to the
subcommittee and responded to
questions from its members.

Nehf told the subcommittee that STRS
Ohios changes are necessary to
preserve the pension fund and
acknowledged that the board-approved
plan has the support of the Healthcare
and Pension Advocates for STRSa
coalition that is comprised of groups of
active members, retirees and
employers. The STRS Ohio plan
increases age and service requirements
for retirement; calculates pensions on a
lower, fixed formula; increases the
period for determining the final average
salary; increases member contributions
to the system; reduces the cost-of-living
adjustment (COLA); defers the COLA
for future retirees; and call for no COLA
to be added in fiscal year 2014.

Now that all five statewide pension
systems have made presentations to the
subcommittee, this body is hearing
testimony from proponents, opponents
and interested parties. House
leadership has indicated that it plans to
hold additional hearings in August and
early September and expects to take
action on the bills in September.

(From your editor: Would you like to
have future eUpdates from STRS sent
to you? I receive this and others
because of my role as webmaster of the
Henry County Retired Teachers
website. Give me a request and Ill
forward these to you.)
