Emerging Technology Today, we begin to investigate all the opportunities that are available for now just you

as a student, but for you as the soon-to-be teacher of students that have many more options! Again, the intent is that the work on these following topics should take you about two hours to complete (in lieu of our class time). Blog on Emerging technology will be written, using google docs and skype with another student (Thats right a common blog). This would be a great place for a photo gallery of all you are learning and seeing. TAG ALL THIS STUFF IN YOUR DIIGO ACCOUNTSand share the really cool stuff. Topic One: Who Owns the Learning?? Watch the following videos and take personal notes. Alan November: Who Owns the Learning? http://video.google.com/videoplay? docid=929307666112123725&ei=ZiIQSsywGYG2rgLlvtz0AQ&q=alan+november (This link was not working) Alan November, 3 Skills Students Need to Succeed http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V56y-DbqHTA In this video, Alan November discusses three skills that are necessary for students to succeed in life. 1. Information Processing -Students need to be able to organize information and make meaning of it 2. Global Communication -Students need to be able to work with people all over the world to solve problems. 3. Be Self-Directed -Essentially, students should not have to have someone telling them what to do. They should be highly disciplined and be able to use their imagination. Topic Two: What Tools are available? A. One Laptop Per Child Project

a. Go to http://laptop.org/en/ , the One Laptop Per Child site. The OLPC Project provides laptops to poor students in low-income areas/developing countries to help them become better educated. Students become engaged with the use of these laptops and they are able to connect with each other and the rest of the world. Five principles that everyone agrees on when these laptops are distributed: 1. The kids keep the laptops 2. Focus on early education (kids ages 6-12) 3. No one gets left out 4. Connection to the internet 5. Free to grow and adapt. B. Maine Laptop Program http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/25782209/ Maine has launched a laptop program where all 7 th and 8th students use a laptop in the classroom. Teachers say that the laptops have been helpful by making lessons more personal and they can now access the most up to date information. Students say they understand the material better with laptops and they like school more which has increased the attendance rate. The incorporation of laptops in the classroom has not changed standardized test scores. However, its important to look at the bigger picturemost employers care less about test scores and focus more on whether or not potential employees have the innovative skills needed to succeed. The state plans to expand the laptop program to high school students however, due to budget cuts, there have been some setbacks. C. Applications: Cell Phones, Tablets, and more a. Use the Android Market place and find a few applications you could use in your classroom. https://market.android.com/?hl=en -Financial Calculators- Loan Comparison, Retirement Calculator, Credit Card Payoff Calculator. -Barcode Scanner- Be a smart consumer and compare prices of products. -Ideal Weight (BMI)- Students can check to see what their BMI is and if they are underweight, normal weight or overweight. b. Use the Apple Store to find a few applications you could use in your classroom. http://www.apple.com/ipad/from-the-app-store/ -Hello Baby- Watch how a baby progresses from week 4 to week 40 -MyFitness Pal- Keep track of what you eat -Balance- Electronic checkbook c. Do a google search for other emerging technology for use in education. Find at least three other applications. -Socrative- Create quizzes and have students take them with their ipads/tablets/phones -Dropbox- Upload files/cloud -Quick Voice- The teacher can record her lesson/explanation of the lesson if she has a substitute teacher. -Nearpod- Push Power Points/Content onto students iPads. C. Social Learning: a. Facebook in Education: see this group: http://www.facebook.com/education

This facebook page was created to help educators around the world to stay connected with learning how to implement technology in the classroom. The group has different links and articles that provide examples and sharing resources to educators. There was one particular post that stood out to me, Digital Learning Day, this day was designed to celebrate and shine light on successful instructional and effective use of technology in the classroom, bringing the whole country together to reflect on technology. b. Edmodo in Education: Check it out: http://www.edmodo.com/ This website can be used in any classroom and content area. This website is compared to an educational facebook. There is many things teachers can do if they create an account. As I was researching I found many tools that I was interested in to create one for my future classroom. Connecting with parents, tracking classroom and student participation, assign homework, calendars to keep students prepared and organized for upcoming events, sharing photos and videos. This site is a great way to use technology in your classroom.

c. Ning: http://www.ning.com/?n_e=1&n_v=4 This website is a site to help people, in this case teachers, create their own social network. The site gives you a chance to sign up under a free trial, and then if you are interested they have 3 different membership prices. I could use this type of site in my classroom by creating my very own site, customizing it to meet my students needs. For example, as a member you can include ads on your page, I could have websites as ads to spark students interests that relate to the content, such as recipe websites for my healthy living class. The members of your customizable site has access to learn, explore, and be a part of it's own community. d. Teacher PLN (personal learning network) learning example: http://edupln.ning.com/ 1. Twitter 2. Professional 3. blogs 4. Linked in The PLN is connected with your Ning account. This is specific for educators to help organize their page, have networking opportunities, or professional development. There are educational videos, blogs, and websites that allows members access too. Staying connected and up to date with this PLN network allows educators to stay on top of the technology information as well as educational resources. e. Other types: Find other ways for social learning in your classroom 1. Wiki 2. Blogs 3. Delicious and Diigo (create a group) 4. Skype for educator (see what it has to offer)

Social learning in the classroom is endless. Social learning is important because it keeps students engaged and interactive throughout the learning process. Teachers can create wikis to interact with students and parents by sharing their lesson plans and student resources. Blogs involve parents, students, and teachers to post their ideas, opinions, and work and a way to receive feedback. Blogs can include videos, links, pictures, and interactive web tools. Diigo is a web highlighter and sticky notes online; in the classroom this can be used when writing papers, referencing important information found on the web. Diigo allows students to always remember what they read from the internet, by easily highlighting and writing notes refer too. Delicious is the bookmaking phenomenon for the web; students can organize their links and share them with the class and teacher. In the classroom, students can use diigo and delicious as their interactive work cited page. Skype for educator is a way to connect your classroom with the world, not only does this web site allow you to share your classroom via video, it allows you to view other educators classrooms as well. Skype for educators connect members with skype lesson plans, profiles of educators, and access to unlimited video chatting. This can be used at home, in the classroom, or distance learning lab. Skype allows students to view their teachers via web and video. f. Flipped teaching: Take a few minutes and look up this topic, examples, and how it could change teaching and learning.

A reversed teaching model that delivers instruction at home through interactive, teacher-created videos and moves homework to the classroom. Moving lectures outside of the classroom allows teachers to spend more 1:1 time with each student. Students have the opportunity to ask questions and work through problems with the guidance of their teachers and the support of their peers creating a collaborative learning environment. Some benefits
Gives teachers more time to spend 1:1 helping student Builds stronger student/teacher relationships Offers a way for teachers to share information with other faculty, substitute students, parents, and the community easily Produces the ability for students to rewind lessons and master topics Creates a collaborative learning environment in the classroom D.
