Summary
During this discrepant event materials are mixed together water (liquid) and cornstarch (solid). When these two are mixed they form a mixture known as a suspension. A suspension is a substance that can hold the qualities of both a liquid and a solid. Under certain circumstances the majority of the substances qualities may make the substance appear to be a solid, while under other circumstances qualities may make it appear more as a liquid. For example, when the mixture is held in the hands it tends to portray the qualities of a liquid. This is caused by the

Grade Level: 2nd Science Content Area: Physical Science Standard(s): 2-4.1 Recall the properties of solids and liquids.
2-4.2 Exemplify matter that changes from a solid to a liquid and from a liquid to a solid

Questioning: What are the qualities of a solid? What are the qualities of a liquid? During the
demonstration we want the students to observe that the substance is a solid until it is picked up with your hands. We want the students to wonder how this solid transformed into a liquid just by the touch of your hands.

Demonstration: Pass around the plate of goo. Instruct students to observe using their eyes
only and not to touch the substance. Predict whether the substance is a liquid or a sold. Their predictions will be placed on a tally chart. After the tally chart has been completed the students will be allowed to pick up the goo. When the goo is picked up they will notice that it changes into a liquid. When this demonstration was tested we noticed that mixing a solid and a liquid produced a solid until our body heat was applied to the goo.

Science Concept Based off Demonstration Showcase: The students are being taught
the concept of suspension and property changes between solids and liquids. The demonstration will show the students what a solid and liquid looks like and factors that changes a solid to a liquid. The factors that change a solid to a liquid will teach the class about the term suspension.
