GRACE
Grace Kelly is synonymous with cool beauty and impeccable taste. As the V&A exhibition celebrating her style opens this week we salute her status as one of fashions most iconic and truly elegant muses
race Kelly is a fashion icon. A darling of Hollywood and loved throughout the world, in her films Kelly was portrayed as the archetype of feminine yet ice-cool perfection, resplendent in pretty pastel hues, luxurious fabrics and simple figure-flattering cuts. From the moment she stepped into the spotlight as a young actress in 1950, her fresh, natural glamour dazzled women everywhere. From Kellys spectacular costumes in films like High Society and Alfred Hitchcocks Rear Window to her personal wardrobe of slick American sportswear and exquisite evening gowns
by Givenchy and Christian Dior, Kellys look was one of faultless chic the ultimate strong and fearless Hitchcock blonde, as stunning off-screen as she was on film. A true fashionista, Kellys style transcended trends: whether she was relaxing in Capri pants and a crisp white shirt teamed with oversized shades and ballet flats (a look she worked in To Catch A Thief), or fashion icon was sealed. On April 19th stepping out in a demure tailored day 1956, after making eleven films and suit complete with her signature white winning one Academy Award, Kelly was gloves and an Herms Kelly bag (named crowned Her Serene Highness Princess after the star herself), she maintained Grace of Monaco, aged just 26. Kellys impact on fashion is as strong today as it was back in the 1950s. Her classic yet incredibly glamorous look sits well alongside the more restrained minimal trends prevalent on the FW10 runways. Like 2010s effortlessly stylish girls, Kelly put her own stamp on the GRACE KELLY fashions of the season.

As a Princess, she mixed American glamour with European haute couture and opulent fine jewelry and remained faithful to the style she had established as an actress favoring simple silhouettes defined by expert details: box pleated skirts, three-quarter-length sleeves, shaped shawl collars, discreet hemlines and ladylike accessories including silk headscarves, pearl earrings and bracelets and fabulous hats ranging from pillar-box styles to attention-grabbing petal-strewn turbans. As Kellys younger sister, Lizanne Le Vine remembers, Our mother was a stickler for dressing appropriately. I am sure her influence was in some way responsible for Graces white gloves and hats. She loved hats! Since her 1950s heyday and even after her tragic death in 1982, Kelly has held her place as one of the most admired women in the world: as a Hollywood star, a top fashion muse and a mistress of understated elegance. It is impossible to look like Princess Grace, says designer Karl Lagerfeld. She was the most beautiful blonde of her days. And I am sure [if she were alive today], even at nearly 80, she would have been stunning.

We pay homage to the most GRACEFUL piece in the modern womans wardrobe
an ode to the
T
A pencil skirt suit designed by french designer Jean Patou in 1951.
he pencil skirt is one of fashions enduring stars, loved for its timeless grace, effortless glamour and curveaccentuating qualities. Since legendary designer Christian Dior created this sultry shape as part of his revolutionary New Look in the late 1940s, the pencil skirt has gone on to adorn some of the worlds most elegant bodies, including Grace Kelly, Sophia Loren and Ava Gardner; all of whom couldnt get enough of its form-flattering silhouette and the feminine wiggle it created when its wearer walked. After the full skirts of the 50s and the bell bottomed 70s, the style
experienced a renaissance in the 1980s workplace as part of the power suit. Today, fashions love affair with the pencil skirt has been reignited with designers like Giambattista Valli and D&G Dolce & Gabbana reinventing this ultra refined cut with ruffles and leopard print for the modern woman. And while retro-inspired hit TV show Mad Men continues to celebrate this sophisticated aesthetic, hip girls about town have been spotted showcasing the pencil skirt day and night. The key to making this look work now? Dont just skirt the issue, pair it with sky scraper heels, a simple tank and lots of contemporary attitude.
