IN THE LUXURY car pecking order in India, Volvo has always been right
at the bottom. The Swedish brand (now Chinese-owned) hasnt been able
to make a signicant impact in the ve years since it entered this market.
Its a lot to do with the brand. While some know of Volvos obsession
with making the safest cars in the world, its just not a selling point in this
country. In fact, Volvo suffers from a fuddy-duddy image, and the brand
isnt perceived as cool or sexy. Sportier-looking cars like the S60 and
XC60 have attempted to shake off Volvos boring image, and to a certain
extent they have, boosting Volvos sales by 150 percent. But, in absolute
terms, the numbers are still insignicant and Volvos market share is
around a mere three percent of the total luxury car market in India.
Volvo is now pinning its hopes on the all-new V40 and its variants,
which are coming here with all guns blazing. The V40 Cross Country
looks good and drives well, and its likely to carry a very competitive
price tag. Volvo is targeting the bottom end of the luxury market, and
that brings with it the promise of higher volumes. But the competition is
eyeing this segment too, and a number of new, affordable luxury cars, like
the BMW 1-series, Mercedes-Benz A-class and Audi A3 will certainly give
the V40 a run for its money.
Its not going to be easy for Volvo because its a brand that ducks under
the Indian luxury car buyers radar, being more of
a left-eld option than a mainstream badge. The
real problem is that Volvo simply doesnt have the
marketing muscle of its rivals to invest in spicing
up its brand in India. So, even with products as
solid as the V40, Volvo will nd it hard to appeal
to a wider audience.

THE RIGHT LOOK
I was quite disappointed with
the MU-7, which looks like the
D-Max pick-up with a body
bolted onto it. The styling
is too old-fashioned and it
has the look of a commercial
vehicle. To make a mark in the
competitive Indian landscape,
you need an SUV that has a
fantastic image and looks the
part. I dont think the Isuzu
MU-7 comes anywhere close
to doing that.
Manohar Dutt
Mumbai
SIZE MATTERS
I dont think the Isuzu
MU-7 will spoil the Toyota
Fortuners party. Due to
its massive size, Indian
customers wont find it easy
to manoeuvre through Indias
traffic, whereas the Fortuner
is a treat to drive. Moreover,
the Fortuner commands a
love-at-first-sight feeling,
which the MU-7 fails to do.
And given Isuzus start-up
dealership network, theres no
immediate danger to Toyota.
Siddharth Panigrahi
Behampur, Odisha
STYLE CONSCIOUS
The Nissan Evalia and Isuzu
MU-7 are good offerings, but
could do with better styling.
The Evalias boxy design
and the MU-7s haphazard-
looking front grille project
a down-market image. This
might be a huge reason for
their possible failure in India.

SELLING POINTS
I think GM India has got it
right with the Chevrolet Sail.
Its a spacious saloon with
a nice diesel engine and the
price comes as a pleasant
surprise. Its got an honest
air about it, and while I
agree with your review in
the February issue that the
interior quality isnt good, the
design is quite pleasing. The
problem is that customers
dont have Chevrolet cars high
up on their shopping list. For
the Sail to do well, a clever
marketing campaign, the
likes of which Volkswagen is
known for, is what is needed
for customers to sit up and
take notice.

The Isuzu MU-7 was indeed
a surprise, as your February
cover story put it. This new
SUV could be the dark horse
in the SUV class, despite
its rather steep price tag.
There are several reasons
to believe this. Firstly,
Isuzus are known for their
no-nonsense reliability and
the Tavera is good proof of
this. The soft launch could
actually work in Isuzus
favour as there is no hype
built up and hence customer
expectations wont be too
high. This slow and steady
approach is what will make
Isuzu eventually succeed.

SWITCHING PLACES
This is with reference to your
review of the new Chevrolet
Sail. While I agree with your
road testers on most of the
points, I strongly disagree
with their criticism about
the placement of the power-
window switches on the floor.
Mahindra, Tata and others
have also been criticised in
the past for the same. While it
is ergonomic and convenient
to have the switches on the
door in a left-hand-drive car,
it is not at all good to have
them on the right door like
in a right-hand-drive car.
I have driven vehicles with
both configurations quite
extensively and I feel it is
troublesome and sometimes
dangerous to take your
right hand off the steering
wheel in a moving vehicle to
access these switches. If floor
mounting is inconvenient,
they should be placed on
the centre console or even
mounted on the steering
wheel. Having them on the
right door is unsafe.

The ASEANIndia Car

the ASEAN Rally, cross-
border travel becomes easier.
I, for one, would certainly

there would be many like me
who love the thrill of long-

after reading it and realising

oyota is in the process
of developing the saloon
version of the new-
generation Corolla,
codenamed E160, for sale
in India and other markets
around the world. Known
as the Corolla Altis in India,
and simply as the Corolla in
markets like the US, the new
car features very aggressive
styling and sporty detailing.
Based on the Furia concept
car showcased during Detroit
Motor Show in January, the
new car has been specifically
designed to appeal to a
younger audience.
Some of the radical
detailing from the Furia has
been toned down, but a lot
of the core design influences
have been retained. Things
like the prominent shoulder
line, the kink in the window
line and heavily creased
bumpers remain and this
gives the new car a sharper
look. Also carried over from
the Furia is the very modern
tightly stretched skin of the
car, which enhances its look.
The overall objective seems
to have been sharpening up
the previous cars blunt look;
something weve already seen
on cars like the new Camry.
The rear in fact resembles
that of the Camry, with sharp
wraparound tail-lamps and a
thick band of chrome running
in between.
The front of the car is the
most radical. Whereas the
base of the bumper is similar
to that of the current Corolla
Altis sold in India, the grille
and headlights are integrated
into a single element. Similar
to the Honda City in concept,
the new Corollas headlights
however have a kink at the
bottom as well as a sharp
vertical crease in the bumper.
What remains to be seen is
whether Toyota carries over
the wheelbase of the Furia
show car which, at 2700mm,
is a full 100mm longer
than the current car and,
incidentally, identical to that
of the Honda Civic.
The engines that power
this new Corolla are expected
to be similar to the ones
that power the car currently
on sale in India. Both the
1.8 petrol and the 1.4 diesel
will be updated to improve
performance and power
delivery. The 1.8 petrol gets
dual VVTi, as earlier, where
both intake and exhaust
valves are infinitely variable,
helping the car deliver more
power and performance. Both
the engine and gearing are
likely to be optimised to make
the new Corolla more efficient
and there will be a seven-
step CVT-based automatic
gearbox, similar to the one on
the current car. The 1.4 diesel
will carry on with the variable
geometry turbo seen on the
current Altis, and while power
isnt expected to cross 90bhp,
Toyota is working hard to
improve driveability.
Levels of efficiency
however will be improved on
both petrol and diesel with the
addition of an all-new electric
power steering system which
typically improves efficiency
by 3-5 percent; not a big
saving if you think of it in
terms of a tank of fuel, but a
huge saving over the life of
the car.
The interiors are all-
new, though. Featuring an
integrated centre console
with a large touchscreen
display, climate control and
faux aluminium highlights,
the new interior will deliver
a more upmarket feel.
Like the exteriors,
the insides will
be sporty as
well. The new

THEENTRYLUXURY
segment in India has
traditionally been
dominated by Mercedes,
BMW and Audi. Jaguar, who
entered the market in 2009,
hasnt played a role here. It
currently doesnt have a car
to compete with since the
demise of the Ford Mondeo-
based X-Type in 2010. The
good news for fans of the
leaping cat is that this is
about to change as Jag is
currently working on what
could be its most ambitious
car yet.
The bean counters at
Tata are close to giving the
go-ahead for a range of
light-weight rear-wheel-
drive models that will take
on the 3-series, A4 and C-
class. The global car market
for compact premium cars
accounts for close to two
million units annually, and
Jaguar wants a piece of
this pie.
The new model range
will be built on the same
Premium Lightweight
Architecture (PLA)
aluminium platform that
made its debut on the new
Mk4 Range Rover launched
recently. These components
are scalable, which means
they will also be used in the
next-gen XF and XJ models
and that will allow Jaguar
to produce 90 percent of
its cars from one common
set of components. This
will help Jag save on costs
and increase profitability
enough to be able to afford
an expensive aluminium
architecture.
JLR also plans to
outsource aluminium from
its facility in Saudi Arabia. It
will have the panels pressed
locally and shipped to the
UK and this, it expects,
will make the project more
viable. As far as styling is
concerned, Jags design
head Ian Callum says his
team will have to find a good
compromise between a low-
slung look and practicality.
The baby Jag will be
powered by turbocharged
direct injection petrol and
diesel Hotfire engines,
which Jaguar promises
will be quite frugal. These
four-cylinder engines will
be developed in the UK
and built at a new facility
in Wolverhampton. A nine-
speed automatic gearbox
is also on the cards. Jaguar
plans to assemble and part-
produce the car in India
as well to keep its price
tag competitive with its
established rivals.
Jaguar claims its PLA
platform can also be spun
into a front-wheel-drive
car, but for the time being
there are no plans for such
a saloon. Other models in
the works right now are a
crossover, a front-wheel-
drive hatch and the new
XF Mk2.
Jaguar will have to pull
a rabbit out of the hat with
this new model; it will have
to give buyers a reason to
stray from its established
rivals. And ultimately, it
will be the price and value
proposition that will be key.

NThree petrols and three diesels for future compact car

C
ahindra is developing
an all-new engine
family that will
power its future
range of compact SUVs
and passenger cars. It is
rumoured to be investing
around US$ 800 million
(around Rs 4,300 crore) in
this project.
The new engine family is
likely to include three petrol
and three diesel engines
with capacities ranging from
1.2 to 1.6 litres. Developed
on a modular architecture,
the base 1.2-litre motors
will be three-cylinder units,
while the higher capacity
1.5- and 1.6-litre engines
will have four-cylinders.
However, to optimise costs,
all engines will use common
parts and have a common
bore centre spacing to
optimise manufacturing
costs. An all-new five- and
six-speed transmission is
also being developed along
with a trans-axle to drive the
transverse engines.
The new engine family
is being developed for
Euro VI application and
beyond, and will power a
range of future compact
models from both Mahindra
and SsangYong. While
the engine development
is a cooperation between
Mahindra and its Korean
affiliate, its the parent
company that will take
the lead in this ambitious
programme. Hence, the bulk
of the engine development
will be carried out in the
Mahindra Research Valley
(MRV), the companys
state-of-the-art R&D
facility outside Chennai.
Engine specialists AVL of
Austria are believed to be
consultants in this project.

NEW PREMIUM HATCHBACK
Any new product conceived now will take
at least two years to launch. Looking at its

will hang on in the passenger car market
for that long. It needs to understand the

VOLKSWAGEN DEVELOPING LOW-COST CAR BELOW POLO
Volkswagen has announced that it is in the process of developing a budget car and that its likely
to make it to production by 2015. VW boss Martin Winterkorn said the base development will be
carried out in Germany while the final stages will be carried out in China in collaboration with its
partner. The cost of the car will be kept low by using
the carmakers existing technology and sourcing
parts and materials locally in China. VW technical
chief, Dr Ulrich Hackenberg, has said the car will
come in different body styles eventually and will be
sold under a sub-brand. He insisted that the car wont
look cheap and will fulfill more functions than that of
simple mobility. It will initially be offered only in China
and is likely to make it to Indian showrooms later.

D
issan, in a bid to grab
some serious market
share here, is planning
to introduce at least
10 new models in India
by 2016. The carmaker is
targeting around 10 percent
growth and is also looking
to expand its dealer network
across the country.
First up, Nissan will
enter the automatic hatch
segment with an X-Tronic
CVT gearbox-equipped Micra
to rival the likes of the Brio
auto and Ritz auto. Then it
will venture up the segment
ladder and plonk an X-Tronic
CVT gearbox in the Sunny to
compete against clutchless
versions of the Vento, Rapid,
Scala and Verna.
Nissan is also planning
its own version of the
Renault Duster SUV that
is internally codenamed
NH79. The new compact
SUV, which should slot in
below the Duster, will have
considerable sheet metal
changes and is expected to
enter showrooms by the end
of this year.
As first reported in
our June 2011 issue, the
carmaker will introduce
the low-cost Datsun brand
in India in 2014. Two
hatchbacks are being
developed. One (codenamed
K2) will be based on the
K11 Micra and is expected
to be priced at Rs 4 lakh.
Another cheaper Rs 3-lakh
model (codenamed I2) will
compete with the likes of
the Alto.
The Japanese carmaker
is expected to ramp up
capacity at its Chennai

one to accommodate the
higher volumes of cars itll

Hover Automotive to get an overhaul
HOVER AUTOMOTIVE INDIA (HAI), an independent
company entrusted with distribution, sales and marketing
of Nissan products in India, is set to undergo a major top
management change. GM Singh, one of the promoters of
HAI, has stepped down according to company sources.
Singh will no longer be involved in the operations of HAI and
Moez Mangalji, chairman of HAI, will take a more active role
in the Indian business. Nissans poor performance in India
is being squarely pinned on HAI, which is also responsible
for dealer development for the brand. According to reports,
the Nissan dealer community is unhappy with the lack of
support from HAI to make their businesses profitable.
Nissan is anxious to sort out and expand its network
before the imminent launch of high volume models from
the Datsun brand.
Nissan will launch a
rebadged version of
the Renault Duster SUV.
VWs low-cost car will be
part-developed in China.
MERCEDES-BENZ IS set
to launch a replacement
of its G55 AMG here. The
new G-class SUV will get
subtle styling tweaks to the
exterior and interior along
with a lot more technology.
The exterior will have a
two-slat grille and a deeper
bumper with larger air
ducts up front. It will also
get red brake calipers and
20-inch wheels. The new G-
class will get side-mounted
exhaust vents that exit
underneath the rear doors.
The G63 will get a
544bhp version of Mercs
5.5-litre V8 engine mated
to a seven-speed 7G-tronic
gearbox and four-wheel
drive. The carmaker claims
the new G-class is more
fuel efficient with start-stop
function and brake energy
recuperation systems.
The G63 will come
with a revised instrument
pack carried over from
the third-gen M-class, a
colour monitor and Mercs
COMAND system. There are
also additional electronic
driver aid systems like
Distronic Plus radar
controlled cruise control,
Blind Spot Assist and the
parking aid Parktronic,
which now incorporates
a reversing camera. The
standard ESP (electronic
stability program) has
also been revised and now
includes Trailer Stability
Assist and a hill hold
function. Expect Merc to
price the G63 AMG at
over Rs 1.5 crore.

confirmation that it will
bring its iconic Jeep
brand to India in 2013,
it looks like the American
SUV maker has begun
testing its cars here
in earnest.
The spy picture here
shows Jeep testing both the
short wheelbase and the
long wheelbase version of
its iconic Wrangler SUV. This
will most likely be Jeeps first
offering here. The Wrangler is
expected to be launched with
a 2.8-litre common-rail diesel
motor good for 197bhp and
front and rear live-axles,
which will make it by far the
best for serious off-roading.
The other Jeep seen
is the fourth-gen Grand
Cherokee, likely to come
here with a 3.0-litre diesel
engine that makes 237bhp.
Following a recent facelift,
the Cherokee gets an eight-
speed gearbox.
Both the Wrangler and
the Cherokee will initially
be introduced via the CBU
route, implying a likely
expensive price tag, with
the Wranglers starting
price expected at around
Rs 35 lakh and the
Cherokees at around
Rs 40 lakh. That said, Jeeps
parent company Chrysler
understands the nature of
the Indian market and could
begin assembling its models
at Fiats Ranjangaon plant
later, allowing much more
competitive pricing.
There are two more
models in the offing from
Jeep for India. The first
would be a B-segment SUV,
the first Jeep-branded Fiat-
Chrysler product based on
a version of Fiats Compact
Wide platform. It will most
likely get a nine-speed
automatic box. The other
model headed here is likely
to be based on the SUV
makers smallest model in its
global line-up the Compass.

The luxury segment | Analysis
throttle and has aggressive plans to
achieve leadership in this segment
by 2015. Audi has kicked off 2013
with three new cars the new R8,
the updated Q5 and the petrol Q3.
Sales are already up 10.5 percent
in January and Audi has also
announced intentions of expanding
its dealership network from the
current 25 centres to 34 by the end
of the year.
Volvo, which has been a fringe
player all along, is looking at
jumping into the mainstream with
some very affordable products.
In fact, 2012 was the best year
for Volvo, with a 150 percent
jump in sales, thanks to a slew of
aggressively priced models like the
XC60 crossover and S60 saloon.
However, Volvo sales gures still
remain in three digits, which is
miniscule by segment standards.
Jaguar-Land Rover is emerging as
the dark horse in the segment, with
attractive products that offer buyers
exclusivity and a change from the
German fare that is now quite
common on Indian roads.
In fact, luxury cars are
becoming a very common sight
on Indian roads, thanks to erce
competition that is driving luxury
car prices down and making them
progressively more affordable.
BMWs X1, Audis Q3 and Mercs
B-class are but a few examples of
carmakers introducing products
that are making it easier for buyers
to own a luxury brand. Even Jaguar,
which has traditionally been absent
from the entry-level executive luxury
saloon segment, has entered the fray
with the launch of its 2.2-litre XF.
However, the true reason for
the explosion of luxury cars is
the rampant discounts prevalent
in the segment. The German trio
is engaged in a erce battle to
undercut each other like never
before. As a result, customers are
benetting from this windfall with
very tempting offers that run into
savings of several lakhs, even on
new models. The company that
resisted getting into the discount
war is Jaguar-Land Rover, which
hasnt compromised its protability
and brand image, even if it means
selling far fewer cars than its rivals.
Certain carmakers have also
started up initiatives like used
car dealerships and nancial
programmes for aspiring luxury
car owners. Mercedes-Benzs in-
house nancial service arm Daimler
Financial Services has introduced
the personal lease, whereby a
customer can lease a luxury car
for a period of time by paying a
lump sum. The amount includes
principal, service charges, warranty
and insurance. All that needs to be
paid through the rest of the period
is the lease rent.
While more affordable entry-level
models, hefty discounts and leasing
schemes have made it easier for
people to own luxury cars, there
are other factors that have been
helping the segments popularity.
Experts attribute this robust take
off to rising disposable incomes
here. According to the annual World
Wealth Report (2011) by Merrill
Lynch and Capgemini, India has the
worlds 12th largest high net worth
population, growing at the fastest
rate of 20.8 percent. Moreover,
the average age of the Indian
millionaire has dropped from 50
years to around 35-40 years.
Another interesting trend that
has come to the fore is the rising
demand for luxury cars from Tier II
and Tier III cities. Many carmakers
have started to extend their presence
to these smaller urban centres.
Audi has dealerships in Lucknow,
Coimbatore, Nagpur, Ludhiana and
Surat. BMW opened up a dealership
in Raipur as far back as ve years
ago and even has mobile showrooms
which could travel to smaller towns.
Mercedes launched dealerships in
Indore, Karnal and Lucknow and
sources in the company claimed 50
percent of the demand for its cars is
today accounted for by Tier II cities.
But despite some positive factors,
II
1I
||k| kJ\k1!k|
TO COUNTERTHEeffect of the high import duty charged on CBUs, more
and more luxury carmakers are starting to assemble models at their
manufacturing facilities here through the completely knocked down (CKD)
route. The biggest advantage of local assembly is that it attracts between
10 and 30 percent duty as opposed to the 75 percent charged on CBUs.
Carmakers with factories here have leveraged the CKD route to pass on the
cost savings to buyers, pricing some cars below Rs 30 lakh. With the race
getting increasingly competitive, more and more fringe manufacturers like
Volvo are looking to set up production facilities here.

the segment. In 2012, the Indian
government raised the import duty
chargeable on cars imported as
completely built-up units (CBUs)
from the already hefty 60 percent
to 75 percent. And rising fuel prices
havent helped either.
However, launch of cars here
like the Lamborghini Aventador
Roadster, Audi R8, Mini Cooper S
and Porsche 911 goes to show
luxury carmakers faith in the
potential this segment holds in
the country. With the competition
in the segment intensifying and
the luxury barrier becoming
progressively easier to break
through, the future of the luxury
car segment in India looks bright.

Autocars Asian Car of the Year award is back for its second year.
After a number of exciting new launches in 2012, the six cars

has the goods to take home the AACOTY trophy for 2013?

ts no secret that the Asian car
markets are growing at a rapid
rate. In fact, most carmakers
are training their sights and
tailoring their cars to the needs
of these markets, even creating
special models specically for certain
countries. The Autocar family in
Asia is growing too, and there are
currently nine editions, each of
which is run by some of the biggest
names in the motoring space.
To acknowledge this growth,
the Autocar Asian Car of the Year
award the regions rst and
only multi-market award for the
best production car in all of Asia is
back for its second year.
Last year, Audis A6 took home
the inaugural title. This year, weve
got six new nalists vying to be the
best car in Asia. And who better to
decide the best than the editors of
the Asian editions of Autocar
magazine, your trusted source for
all things automotive.
ELIGIBILITY
There may be some similarities, but
at the end of the day each market has
its own denition of what makes the
perfect car. So as you might imagine,
nding one car that suits the needs
of all these countries is easier said
than done. For a car to even qualify
for the award, it needs to be on
sale in at least three of the nine
Asian countries in which Autocar is
published, and its launch date must
have fallen between October 2011
and September 2012. A total of 59
cars made the initial cut and this list
was narrowed down by the chairman
of the judges to these six cars.
THE JURY
Nine magazines, two judges from
each, all of them at the forefront
of the industry in their respective
markets and well known overseas.
Years of experience means they
know these markets inside out, and
they have all evaluated a variety of
vehicles. After strict evaluation, each
judge will vote for what they think is
the car from 2012 thats best suited
to all the Asian markets.
HOW IS IT JUDGED?
Each juror gets a total of 25 points
that they must divide amongst at
least ve of the six nalists the
maximum points any one car can
receive is 10. The top two cars on
each judges list cannot receive the
same number of points. At the end,
the car with the most points wins,
plain and simple. In case two cars
AND THE CONTENDERS ARE...
THE UNIQUE APPEAL of SUVs
has always centred around a
few core values. Sheer size,
rugged looks, a high-set driving
position and off-road ability are
some of them. But can it have
the same appeal if you take these
qualities away? Audis diminutive
Q3 has done just that, but it still
holds a lot of appeal. For a start,
its every bit an Audi loaded
with luxury and technology
from its elder siblings, and while
it doesnt have the gargantuan
dimensions of most SUVs, it
more than makes up for this
with modern, attractive styling.
So will this compact SUV let
Audi take home the title two
years in a row?
HAVING MOVED FURTHER
upmarket in its latest F30
iteration, the 3-series was
under a lot of pressure to
become more comfortable and
luxurious. This meant growing
larger, adding equipment (and
weight) and adopting a softer
suspension setup and all this
should have put the 3-series
fun-to-drive reputation at
risk. But BMW has managed to
combine luxury and sportiness
like never before with the new
car. This fantastic all-rounder
is the best in its class in almost
every quantifiable way, and its
a good looker too, but is that
enough to take it to the top of
this list of able contenders?

AND THE CONTENDERS ARE...
THE EVOQUE CAN be confusing.
It is the smallest car in the Land
Rover range, but is by no means
the cheapest. The clue is the
Range Rover badge on its bonnet
this is an out-and-out luxury
vehicle. The interiors are as
sumptuous and well appointed
as the full-size Range Rover,
and under the skin, the very
best in off-road hardware will
let you tackle far more than just
a broken road. However, unlike
most Land Rovers, its designed
for style first, and practicality
second. Its an SUV for the urban
elite, thats high on style and
feel-good factor.
IN 2012, TOYOTA released a
car that harkened back to some
of its most memorable models,
such as the Celica, MR2 and
the Corolla AE86. Developed in
conjunction with Subaru, the
86 or Hachi-Roku is a sportscar
for the masses. Its low-slung,
sharp looking and, significantly,
rear-wheel drive. The 2.0-litre,
naturally aspirated flat-four
engine may produce only
197bhp, but with not much
weight to lug around and a six-
speed manual to row through,
it brings back a sense of driving
purity that many small sportscars
today seem to have lost. But in
todays evolved market, is it a
niche still worth exploring?

Volvo V40 Cross Country | Drive
STORY SHAPUR KOTWAL PHOTOGRAPHY SOMDATTA NHAWKAR
Volvos new V40 Cross Country promises to deliver an alluring
blend of luxury crossover and compact city runabout.
But is the stunning new Swede as impressive as it looks?
|
igarettes, colas, fast food and SUVs
all have the potential to cause harm.
Despite this, we ignore the warning
signs and want them all the same.
But we can reduce the damage
there are solutions. You get low-tar
cigarettes, light colas, diet pizza and then there
are crossovers regular cars dressed up to look
like SUVs. These crossovers have that much-
desired SUV look and feel, but come with very
few SUV penalties; exactly why Volvo is in the
process of readying its V40 Cross Country for
sale in India. Designed to appeal to owners
looking for something different, the V40 will
compete with the likes of the Mercedes-Benz
B-class when Volvo begins to import them
sometime around Diwali. The Gothenburg-based
carmaker isnt expecting any miracles. Its well
aware that the Cross Country will only appeal
to a certain subset of young-at-heart owner-
drivers looking for luxury, features and style
in a compact package. But is the V40 Cross
Country attractive and feature-rich enough
for the smartphone generation?
Volvo has nailed the look for sure. Our red
V40 Cross Country regularly had people craning
their necks to get a better look at the car and we
got thumbs ups and smiles from total strangers
all day. What gets your attention rst are the
aggressive, beak-like bonnet with its cuts and
MARCH 2013 AUTOCAR INDIA 55 www.autocarindia.com
creases, and the extreme rake of the
windscreen. Theres a strong bonnet V,
the headlights are angled back appropriately,
the black roof looks stunning, and the rising
waistline and the tight-tting top meet each
other at the rear of the car quite elegantly.
Off-roader details include an unpainted plastic
cladding that runs around the car, faux scuff
plates, both front and rear, and sleek rails that
seem to oat over the roof. The Cross Country
also gets 40mm more ground clearance and
larger tyres than the regular V40 hatch. Its
not exactly your regular off-roader, but youll
get plenty of attention, for sure.
A quick walk around the car puts things in
perspective. Build quality on the outside is as
good as, if not better than most competitors from
Germany, and its nice to see consistent gaps and
seams all around. The cabin isnt as ashy as the
exterior however. The designers seem to have
been considerably more restrained here and the
Volvo parts bin seems to have been thoroughly
raided; not necessarily a bad thing as most of the
bits are well constructed and have a certain heft
to them. Whats also retained from the bigger,
more expensive Volvos is the look. The cabin is
still a celebration of plain, IKEA-like surfaces
and minimalist details, all tastefully trimmed in
black and dull aluminium. Some large bits, like
the oating centre console and the sculpted door-
pads give the cabin a bit of a lift. Still, that plush
feel you get from something like an Audi cabin is
missing. The only concessions to the plain-Jane
detailing seems to be the shiny white central
console and the transparent LED illuminated
gear selector. They either look extremely cool or
a touch garish, depending on your perspective.
Other unique bits include a frameless rear-view
mirror and a massive full-length glass roof.
Nearly all Volvos have brilliant seats, and the
V40 is no exception. It takes mere seconds to get
comfortable and there is fantastic support for
your back and thighs. This is especially noticeable
if youve just climbed out of another car. Head,
elbow and shoulder room at the front of the V40
is plentiful too. This is also a very practical cabin
with plenty of space for water bottles and other
odds and ends.
Legroom at the rear is sufcient for most
frames and since the rear bench seats are placed
higher up, they gives passengers at the rear a
better view of the road ahead. Headroom for
very tall passengers could be an issue though
due to the tight-tting roof. The third passenger
at the back is also unlikely to be very comfortable
space for the middle seat is minimal and
'I s|(|) |1|1

Legroom at
the rear is
sufficient;
the front seats
are supremely
comfortable.

MARCH 2013 AUTOCAR INDIA 57 www.autocarindia.com
Volvo V40 Cross Country | Drive
theres a tunnel for a propeller shaft (for the
all-wheel-drive version) on the oor that reduces
legroom even futher. And while boot space is
generous, theres no spare wheel. You only get
a puncture repair kit and an electric pump that
runs off a 12-volt jack.
Volvo will bring two motors to India for the
V40 Cross Country, a 180bhp T4 petrol and
this ve-cylinder 148bhp D3 diesel. Unlike
some modern diesels, this 2.0-litre unit is
extremely responsive and quick off the mark.
Theres no turbo lag or delay from the six-speed
transmission when you tap the accelerator, and
the front-wheel-drive V40 leaps forward as soon
as you place your foot on the pedal. Whats even
more gratifying is that theres plenty of linearity.
Step hard on the gas and the V40 takes off like a
scalded cat, the tug from the mid-range staying
strong for quite some time. The performance
gures speak for themselves. 0-100kph takes just
8.6 seconds and 150 is reached in 19.9 seconds.
The V40 excels at covering ground quickly in
urban connes and its surprisingly brisk out
on open roads as well, pulling really effortlessly
and strongly even at speeds as high as 180kph.
You may want more power but its performance
will be more than sufcient for most. The
automatic gearbox is also reasonably good.
Manual intervention is possible and the box
feels pretty responsive at most speeds.
Renement, however, isnt great. The motor
gets a bit gravelly when pushed past 3500rpm,
and then theres no need to guess what fuel the
car runs on.
Sat on taller springs with more suspension
travel, youd also expect the V40 Cross Country
to roll around a bit and feel a touch sloppy from
behind the wheel. This isnt the case. Body roll
is well contained and the Cross Country really
enjoys being cornered. Straight-line stability is
really good, with the big hatch tracking dead
straight at speeds in excess of 150kph with no
need for correction on the wheel. It feels planted
and relaxed in long corners too. There is a hint
of body roll on tighter bends before the V40
settles down, but then you can push really hard
and enjoy the corner. What makes punting the
Volvo around corners even more enjoyable are
the brakes and the steering. The former have
loads of stopping power and a good amount of
feel and this allows you to brake late with plenty
of condence. In addition, the accurate electric
power steering is adequately feelsome. Centre
feel is poor, but turn the wheel and steering
weight and responses are much improved.
The sharp handling, however, does have
its downside. Ride quality is good and the
suspension is reasonably pliant and absorbent,

fter Yamahas
successful 113cc
Ray scooter that
targets the fairer
sex, the Japanese giant is
getting set to introduce a
larger and relatively macho
automatic scooter.
Yamaha isnt revealing
much at this stage, although
we expect to see an up-
to-date, sharply styled
automatic scooter that
squarely targets adult
male buyers. In typical
Yamaha fashion, the next
Yamaha scooter should
score high on performance
and handling, making it a
zippy, urban commuter. This
new scooter is expected
to come equipped with
telescopic fork front
suspension and a features
list at par with rival scooters
on sale in India.
Yamahas next scooter
will house a four-stroke,
single-cylinder and air-
cooled engine, displacing
in the region of 125cc,
generating a bit more power
than the Ray.
The new scooter will enter
showrooms sometime in
mid-2013. Also, Yamaha
has introduced a white paint
scheme for its Ray scooter.

VESPA READIES ACTIVA RIVAL
Vespa is set to launch a mass-market 125cc scooter this year,
targeting Hondas big-selling Activa. Vespas new 125cc automatic
transmission scooter is nearly production-ready and is tipped to
carry a price-tag similar to
rival scooters on sale in India
today. Styling is expected to
be more contemporary than
the retro, classic looking
LX125, with sharper lines and
a possibly more aggressive
stance. The new Vespa can
be expected to offer more
features and slightly better
performance as well. We hope
to see telescopic fork front
suspension and a disc brake
on the new Vespa.
Piaggio remains tight-
lipped for now, but expect the
next Vespa scooter to launch
around mid-2013.
Vespas second coming is expected to have
contemporary styling and a longer features list.
Upcoming
scooter will be
Yamahas second
after the Ray
seen here.
Heros fourth plant will house its global parts centre.

Austrian bike specialist KTM has surpassed
BMW Motorrad to become Europes top-
selling motorcycle manufacturer. KTM has
sold 1,07,142 motorcycles through 2012
to mark a personal best, leading erstwhile
leader BMW Motorrad sales by about 1,000
bikes. KTM grew 32 percent in 2012 in a
declining market, increasing its market share
by 7.5 percent. The company has worked
closely with part-Indian-owner, Bajaj (47.18
percent stakeholder) to reach this stage,
whilst simultaneously establishing a foothold
in India, which has contributed strongly
to KTMs impressive global tally. KTM sold
over 8,000 units of the 200 Duke model
in India in 2012, and India will be amongst
earlier markets that will receive the larger
displacement 390 Duke.

the bikes appeal. The CB150R

alloy wheels, the CB150Rs engine

CB150Rs engine bay look like they
should have been better nished.
The CB150R shares its four-

CBR150R, this synchronised to
a six-speed, one-down, ve-up

(Honda PGM-Fi) CB150R makes
16.8bhp at 10000rpm, about 1bhp
lower than its track-focussed

and torque are available 500rpm
lower than on a CBR, making this
a more practical motorcycle that
is better suited to Indian streets.
Engine tweaks include revised
valve timing as well as fuelling and

2013?
I am now and then asked who was the greatest driver
of all time, Enzo Ferrari once said, but this, I am afraid, is a
question to which no reply can be given. It is not possible to
compare drivers who have raced at different times, on
different roads and tracks and especially under widely varying
circumstances and conditions. None of them, I think, can be
judged fairly out of his own time. And then, being Enzo
Ferrari, he went ahead and did just that, nominating Tazio
Nuvolari, a star of the Scuderia in the 1930s, and Stirling
Moss the one who got away.
As Fernando Alonso is now well aware, however, any man
who steps into the cockpit of a Ferrari grand prix car must
expect to be judged against the great figures of the past. Can
he secure his place in the gallery of champions that began
with Alberto Ascari in 1952 and continued through Juan
Manuel Fangio, Mike Hawthorn, Phil Hill, John Surtees, Niki
Lauda, Jody Scheckter and Michael Schumacher to Kimi
Rikknen, who became, in 2007, the most recent Ferrari
driver to capture the title? Or is he destined to be numbered
among the many starry recruits who arrived brimming with
optimism but, for one reason or another, never quite matched
up to the Scuderias expectations?
Alonso may yet become the tenth man to win the Formula 1
world championship at the wheel of a Ferrari, but it is perhaps
lucky for him that history says a driver doesnt necessarily
have to achieve that feat in order to secure the profound
respect of the Scuderias worldwide army of fans. Among the
Spaniards predecessors, the figure whose memory is most
cherished by the teams older adherents is one who never
captured the title. It was a measure of Gilles Villeneuves
charisma that Enzo Ferrari himself, hardly the most generous
assessor of his pilots, loved the little French-Canadian even
when he was wrecking the teams machinery.
With the destructive capacity he had when driving cars,
grinding up differential shafts, gearboxes, clutches, brakes,
Ferrari wrote in his memoirs, he taught us what had to be
done in order for a driver to be able to defend himself in an
unforeseen moment. I liked him.
Times have changed and Alonso no longer needs to
demolish the machinery in order to demonstrate its
limitations. The telemetry does that for him. But would the
Old Man have liked him, warming to him as he did to
Villeneuve, or would he have withheld his fullest admiration,
as he did from Ascari, Fangio, Hawthorn, Hill and Lauda?
There can be little doubt that, like almost everyone else,
Enzo Ferrari would have looked beyond the recent statistics in
order to arrive at an opinion. Three years without the title
might seem like failure to the outside world, particularly when
a $32m annual salary is factored into the equation, but a
panel of distinguished observers of the motor-racing scene
including Damon Hill, Johnny Herbert and Murray Walker
named Alonso their man of the year in the January issue of F1
Racing, while in a poll of Formula 1 team principals carried
out by Autosport he was voted driver of the season, separated
by a clear margin from Sebastian Vettel, who had just become
the youngest triple champion in the sports history. Eight of
those 12 team principals chose Alonso as their number one, a
clear and hugely authoritative recognition of the general belief
that, in finishing a mere four points behind Vettel in the final
championship table, he had spent the year overcoming the
severe performance restrictions imposed by his car. Alonsos
own end-of-the-year message to his fans was simple and P

upbeat. He said, I give the season a ten. I would change
nothing done by the team or yours truly; no mistakes, no
mechanical problems, zero mistakes at the pitstops, zero
strategic mistakes. Under maximum pressure, we have
performed again above what anyone imagined.
Alonso is a creature of moods, but nowadays he keeps the
darker emotions well hidden. It helps that he very quickly
became acclimatised to the unique environment of the
Scuderia, endearing himself to the workers by spending plenty
of time on the shop floor and showing an active interest in
their work, while establishing himself within the teams
aura by making regular use of the apartment created by
Schumacher in the house at the Fiorano test track
once used by Enzo himself.
It is two-and-a-half years since he told me, during a
conversation at Spa midway through his first season with
Ferrari, that the title would be the last thing to complete a
perfect moment of my life. But whatever happened, he said,
he was relaxed because Ferrari were always in a position to
win: Ill have this possibility for many years.
A few days earlier, Bernie Ecclestone had remarked,
somewhat gratuitously, that Alonso would never match
Michael Schumachers achievements with the team. At 31,
however, there is no reason why the current Ferrari team
leader might not feel that there is still time to match
Schumachers five titles with the team, if not his 72 race wins
in 11 seasons at Maranello.
Like Schumacher, Alonso arrived in Italy with the status
conferred by a pair of back-to-back titles. The principal
difference is that the Ferrari jigsaw, of which Alonso formed
a part in 2010, could not really be compared with the one into
which Schumacher had slotted himself more than a decade
earlier. When Ross Brawn and Rory Byrne joined Schumacher
in the setup headed by Luca di Montezemolo and Jean Todt,
with Gilles Simon running the engine department, something
close to perfection was reached in every aspect of the
operation. The combination of managers and engineers that
welcomed Alonso in 2010 contained plenty of expertise, but it
was not capable of functioning at the exalted level of synergy
that enabled Todt and Brawn to propel Schumacher to his five
consecutive titles.
To date, Alonso has raced in 58 grands prix as a Ferrari
driver, winning nine times. By that yardstick, Schumacher had
a more impressive start: 16 wins in his first 58 starts for the
Scuderia. But the current team
leader can take heart from the
knowledge that it was not until
Schumachers fifth year with the
team that the German was able
to add to the two world titles he
won with Benetton.
Plenty of incidents have
studded Alonsos three seasons
at Ferrari. In Bahrain 2010 he
became the fifth driver the
others were Juan Manuel Fangio,
Mario Andretti, Nigel Mansell
and Kimi Rikknen to win on
his Scuderia debut. Four more victories followed before, at the
final race in Abu Dhabi, a catastrophic error by the pitwall
strategists cost him the chance to beat Vettel to the title. One
of those victories, however, was the tainted win at
Hockenheim, where Rob Smedleys barely coded instruction to
Massa, clearly issued under duress, entered the annals of F1
infamy: Fernando is faster than you, Smedley muttered,
furious that his driver was being denied a victory that would
have capped Massas comeback from a serious injury.
In 2011, in an otherwise barren campaign, Alonso helped P

the team celebrate the 60th anniversary of their very first
world championship GP victory by winning at Silverstone, the
very place where Jos Froiln Gonzlez got them off the mark
in 1951. Of last seasons three race wins, his victory in Valencia
was achieved after qualifying 11th. Only four Ferrari drivers
Giancarlo Baghetti, 12th on the grid at Reims in 1961; Nigel
Mansell, 12th in Hungary in 1989; Alain Prost, 13th in Mexico
in 1990; and Rubens Barrichello, 18th at Hockenheim in 2000
have come from further back to win.
Alonsos sheer talent is elevated by an ability to apply it
with great intelligence in any and all circumstances. Those two
titles with Renault in 2005 and 2006, his 17 victories with
them, the 15 consecutive podiums between Turkey in 2005
and Canada 2006, all established the young man from
Asturias as a major figure of his era. Strangely enough, despite
its disappointing outcome, the 2012 season with its victories
snatched against the odds and the points finishes acquired
through shrewdness and patience rather than sheer speed
only succeeded in consolidating his standing.
Ferrari have certainly never doubted him. Two years ago,
his original three-year contract, which began in 2010, was
extended until the end of 2016. He has the additional

security of knowing, too, that all their eggs are in his basket:
he is their undisputed number one, even if Massa finally
pulled out of a long decline towards the end of last season and
suggested that he may once again be capable of bolstering the
challenge for the constructors title by picking up the sort of
wins that took him to the brink of the 2007 championship.
One quality that Enzo Ferrari would certainly appreciate is
the streak of ruthlessness that occasionally emerges from
behind the generally laid-back public faade of a driver who
loves to entertain his friends with card tricks. It was evident in
Alonsos psychological duel with Lewis Hamilton during his
ill-fated season with McLaren in 2007, in his albeit
seemingly passive role as the beneficiary of his team-mate
Nelson Piquet Jrs staged crash in Singapore the following
year, and in his willingness to accept victory from Massa at
Hockenheim.
Every one of the significant changes that has taken place
inside the Scuderia over the past three years has been aimed
at helping Alonso achieve his ambition. Aldo Costa was
replaced as technical director by Pat Fry, and Loc Bigois
joined as head of aerodynamics, now to be assisted by Martin
Bester, formerly of McLaren and Williams. This crucial area of
development has caused the team persistent problems in
recent years, to the extent that all aero work on the 2013 car
has been done in the Toyota wind tunnel at Cologne, while the
troublesome tunnel at Maranello is completely rebuilt. During
the traditional winter get-together in Madonna di Campiglio,
Alonso gave a vivid precis of their travails with the old facility.
We had a front wing that would give us two-tenths of a
second in the tunnel, he said. We would keep testing it,
bring it to the race, and then it would go even slower. There
were times when what we were testing in the tunnel did not
correspond to what would happen on the race track. So simply
we remained a bit behind in the last few seasons. Starting
from 2013, we hope we are the ones who will innovate and we
will have good correlation between what we find in the wind
tunnel and on the race track.
He probably believes it, given his faith in a team with whom
he has struck up a rapport on all levels, technical and
emotional. After driving Gonzalezs 60-year-old Tipo 375 at
Silverstone on the morning of the 2011 British Grand Prix,
he emerged from the cockpit to
remark that every single
championship for Ferrari began
with Froiln and that car. Later
in the day, celebrating his own
win, he said his thoughts were
with the people at the factory
who are the sons and daughters
of the guys who were there 60
years ago, and who are working
with the same passion for
racing.
On August 14, 2013, Ferrari
will observe the 25th anniversary of the death of their founder,
the man whose name, more than any other, still symbolises
the appeal of motor racing and whose aura continues to hang
over the team. Nothing could be more appropriate than for
Fernando Alonso to fulfil his manifest destiny and capture, a
year ahead of Michael Schumachers schedule, the title that, as
he told me, would complete a perfect moment of my life, to
seal his place among the Scuderias immortals. AI

VWs rst proper crack at WRC has met with seemingly

Carlos Sainz continues to play a role in day-to-day running; Small box on the shoe is a battery-operated foot warmer; Roll cage and snow tyres - not your average Porsche.
Rally fans camped out in full force despite freezing temperatures.
I
ndia? a group of five slightly tipsy
Swedes collectively gasped as I nodded,
while they continued to stare at me like
Id told them I had arrived from outside
the Milky Way.
Maybe it was something to do with the setting
the infamous Colins crest would be the last place
on earth that a bunch of Swedish rally fans would
expect to run into a subcontinent dweller.
Surrounding us was a massive fiesta, which in
fact epitomises Rally Sweden. Fans were camped
out in sub-zero temperatures while waiting for
cars to take big air over the most famous jump
in rallying and disappear into the tricky right. A
concoction of barbeque smells wafted in the air,
and everyone was in high spirits (pun intended!).
What otherwise would have been a bleak setting
was abuzz with excitement.
A snowy tribute to the legendary Colin McRae,
Colins crest is unlike any other jump on the WRC
calendar. In fact, the jump distance is officially
measured and organisers award the longest jump
every year.
The conversation paused for a second as
multiple whistles pierced the air, signalling an
approaching car. Seconds later, a yellow Ford
Fiesta appeared over the crest slightly out
of shape and landed on its left front. A wild
outburst followed unsurprisingly as it was local
lad Pontus Tideman, who was doing a tidy job on
his WRC debut by slugging it out with the bigwigs
in his private Ford.
Thirty-two metres, said the voice on the
loudspeaker, and it was followed by some more
rooting and applause.
Very talented kid, said the man facing me
directly. World champion in 2014, Im telling
you, he further declared while struggling to
stay upright on the slippery snow and out of a
simmering fire that someone had spiked with,
err, whiskey.
As I caught his arm to steady him, another
added Bet youve never seen snow in India!
So, like any Indian motorsport fan, I went on to
enlighten them about the Raid and the erstwhile
Himalayan Rally. They seemed pretty chuffed at
the idea of rallying at 17,000 feet.
The conversation had barely turned to Formula
1 and Kimi Raikkonen when there was more
whistling. This time, it was the Polo WRC of
Sebastien Ogier barrelling over the crest. In a
stark contrast to Tidemans Ford, its pristine
white silhouette aped that of a low-flying aircraft
perfectly poised mid-air, followed by catapult-like
traction after all four wheels hit the ground almost
at the same time.
Twenty-seven metres,
declared the announcer.
The Swedes shook their heads
nonchalantly and one of them
offered me the Jagermeister they
had been swigging straight from
the bottle. I politely declined, so
after shrugging his shoulders and
chugging the bottle empty in one
gulp, he announced Its too fast!
Seems like he did know
something. Ogier went on to win
the stage by 6.6 seconds, and come
Sunday afternoon, gave the Hanove er
squad their first WRC triumph in
only their second attempt.
