The team's effort for concluding a comprehensive assessment of intricate footprinting details which included the travelling of employees etc. The textile industry, which outputs 60 billion kg of fabric annually around the globe, is responsible for a significant portion of the industrial carbon footprint. Through the production of fibers, both natural and synthetic, dying, bleaching, and finishing, 132 million metric tons of coal is burned every year and six to nine trillion liters of water is used. Speaking on the announcement Mr. Anmol Jaggi, Director, Gensol consultants Pvt Ltd. said, The textile sector today is one of the biggest sources of greenhouse gas emissions due to the huge size and scope of the industry as well as the many processes that go into the making of textiles and finished textile products. With this certification, Welspun Syntex Ltd. becomes the first textile company in India to receive this accredition and we are proud to be a part of this milestone for the company, the textile industry and the carbon sector. This certificate has established their sincerity towards maintaining the sanctity of the environment and their understanding of the fact that adherence to environmental guidelines is a necessity for the industry as crucial environmental issues will impact both competitiveness and bottom lines in a regime driven by climate change and sustainability concerns. We strongly believe that players across the value chain will definitely adopt effective strategies to reduce the carbon footprint." The ISO 14064 standards (published in 2006 and early 2007) are the most recent additions to the ISO 14000 series of International Standards for environmental management. The ISO 14064 standards provide governments, businesses, regions and other organisations with an integrated set of tools for programs aimed at measuring, quantifying and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. These standards allow organisations to take part in emissions trading schemes using a globally recognised standard The benefits of the ISO-14064 certification are: Enhance environmental integrity by promoting consistency, transparency and credibility in GHG quantification, monitoring, reporting and verification; Enable organizations to identify and manage GHG-related liabilities, assets and risks through the systematic development and maintenance of GHG inventories; Support the design, development and implementation of comparable and consistent GHG schemes or programs.

Some more information: Factors behind Textile CO2 Emissions There are many reasons that the environmental impact of the textile industry is such a problem. The vast majority of fibers produced are synthetic. These materials, such as petrochemical-based nylon and polyester, and chemical-treated rayon, use massive amounts of energy to create. Not only that, but the chemicals used during the manufacture of these materials end up as toxins polluting the air, soil, and water. Conventional cotton, which makes up the next largest percentage of worldwide fiber production, is also heavily detrimental to the environment. Cotton growth requires intensive use of pesticides, chemical fertilizers, and water. Cotton manufacturing also requires the heavy use of chemicals and energy. The dyeing and bleaching of fabrics involves chemicals, energy, and huge amounts of water. Approximately one million tons of chemical dyes are used every year. The wet finishing process uses huge amounts of water and energy.
