AN TNTRODUCTTON TO NEWSPAPER tN EDUCATTON (NtE)


The newspaper is the only holistic textbooK which brings to the classroom today's
history provides lessons in mathernatics, politics, English, socialstudies, geography, etc, . and gives students the chance to create, learn and debate.

What parts of the newspaper can be used? Every'part news storied, editorials, photographs, advertisements, comics, headtines and even the physical layout of the newspaper.

Where in the curriculum can it be used?


Being a leadirig English language daily, The Star is well placed to assist teachers in the teaching of English. NIE lessons in reading, comprehension, word study, leaming of concepts, critical thinking, etc, can be designed through creative use of the newspaper.

When can it be used? The newspaper is probably the only rnaior text students will continue to read throughout from kindergarten their lives. Proper guidance in its use should be part of every class to adult education.

Why sfrould educators use the newspaper?

It is an updated daily text, containing the latest information on history social studies, scientific discoveries and new technology. lt deals in reality, bridging the gap between the classroom and the realworld
Newspapers contain practical vocabulary words which stud'ents will use over and over again throughout their lives. News stories serue as rnodels for clear, concise, simple writing.

The newspaper is identified as aOult reading rnaterial, providing built-in motivation for students to develop reading, speaking and criticalthinking skills.
Most important, the newspaper is interdisciplinary. lt shows the relevance and importance of many subject areas to adutt life. The newspaper ties it all together. lt is a leaming and growing experience for both educators and /.2

1- Make it a point to know about the newspaper yourself before you introduce it to your students... what it covers, how news is gathered and what responsibilities it

2- Order enough papers to provide one for each student. Have them sign their name in a designated spcit on the front page and the newspapers can be used over a

CLEAR AS A PICTURE
A newspaper photograph can tell a story all by itself. Usually, it is accompanied by a caption that describes what is in the picture. Newspaper photogrdphs are excellent material for lessons with younger children, whether used as a set induction or as the content materialitself.
