Research Question: to investigate the relationship between distance and angle in all 3 projectile cases using an Angry Bird

game. List of controlled variables to minimize % error: Bird Height (of catapult) Floor experiment was performed on

List Dependent:

Angle

List Independent:

Distance final

Hypothesis: using the following launch velocity formula; Vave= velocity/time The angles required to hit all 3 pigs are listed below: 60 , 45, 50 Materials: Zinc Corner Brace Safety goggles Face mask 1 thick/wide piece of plywood 1 thick/skinny piece of plywood 1 mouse/rat trap 2 five pound isolated dumbbell weight Jar lid Duct tape Power drill Tape measurer Paper Logger Pro and software on iPad Protractor Another human being Procedure: Catapult Building:

1. Wear safety gloves and face mask and only use power tools if have pervious knowledge on how to use 2. Get a mousetrap and piece of plywood 3. Take a drill and nail and drill mousetrap trap into plywood 4. Remove everything on mousetrap but platform, hammer, and spring 5. Take the zinc corner brace and drill it onto the side of the mousetrap that the hammer will fall 6. Drill the jar lid onto a small piece of plywood (this will be called the arm) 7. Duct tape the arm onto the side of the hammer going away from its end. Do this lid facing brace. 8. Duct tape weights onto each end of catapult 9. Hot glue protractor onto 10. Put away all tools and make sure catapult is put away from the reach of smaller children Vi Calculations: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. Find another human being Put safety glasses on Force other human to each launch catapult or film Place catapult on clear floor Point the catapult in a safe place for launch away from people, animals, or breakables Launch the bird (bouncing ball) at the different angles and film using the Video physics app. Make sure that this set is repeated multiple times for each angle 7. Use the software to graph the velocities and the acceleration rate 8. Put away all equipment and make sure catapult is put away from the reach of smaller children Angry Birds Game Setup: 1. 2. 3. 4. D-t graphs: Do math to find the dx Set up pigs and catapults using measuring tape Launch and film at different theoretical distances Clean after

1 (60) 2 (45) 3 (50) Vx-T graph:

Slope/Vinst (m/s) 2143 2.8 1833

1 (60) 2 (45) 3 (50)

Slope/Vx (m/s) 1666.7 10.290 174.00

617.00

Comments Lower than the d-t slope by less than one percent. About five times higher than the Vinst. Very different then the first difference because higher not lower. Lower than the Vinst. Shows that there probably was an error in the second calculation somewhere. Redid the math could not find an error. Wishing I could zoom into the graph more but do not have Graphical at home. Lower then both the Vinst of 50 and 60. Shows that some speed must have been lost somewhere. Air resistance is acting on the bird.

Vy-t:

1 (60) 2 (45) 3 (50) Average

Slope/ag (m/s2) -15000 8.1633 6400.0 -2863.9

Comments Negative making it different from the other calculations. Lowest amount of time Lowest as usual. Seems that the lower the angle the less distance it travels. This is also a positive number and yet it goes downward. The data was inconsistent. I wish that I could redo this experiment and film for longer because the data does go down but unlike the first graph it was not filmed long enough so that the number could become negative.

Calculate launch velocity (including angle) required to: (a) Hit a pig target at dx = 1.3, dy = 0.0m Velocity Initial= 3.5 m/s (b) Hit a pig target at dx = 1.3, dy = + 25m Velocity Initial= 2.2 m/s (c) Hit a pig target at dx = 1.3, dy = -15 m Velocity Initial= 1.5 m/s (going downward) Angry Birds Launch Results: Angle 60 50 45 Theoretical dx 857.2 m 19 m 0.0317 Actual dx 5.3 m 4.2 m 1.3 m % Error 16173.6 452.381 2.43846
